I like how Adric explained it to Nyssa. -- How is it bigger on the inside than on the outside? -- It's dimensionally transcendental. -- Dimensionally transcendental? What does that mean? -- It means it's bigger on the inside than on the outside.
Ruby being adopted is pretty standard for new Who. Most main companions have lost at least one parent: Rose: Father died, Martha: father walked out, Donna: father died, Amy: parents died and adopted, Clara: mother died, Bill: mother died and adopted, Ryan: mother died, father walked out and adoptive grandmother died. I think Yaz is the only one with both parents alive and living together.
Well after the Big Bang Amy’s parents were alive at her wedding
Also Martha’s father didn’t walk out her parents divorced, Donna’s father died between her two appearances
In fairness, Amy's parents didn't die... they were absorbed into the cracks & brought back after the big bang mark 2 Also Donna's father only died because the actor died irl... I also think both of Dan's parents are still kicking unless I'm forgetting something
For the sake of thoroughness (lord knows DW fans are nerds about nitty-gritty details lol), it wasn't as if Martha's dad was completely absent from the show like one of the parents who died, he was just separated from Martha's mum so the dynamic was a bit different. Also, Dan's parents are both still alive, and Amy's were too after the universe's reset at the end of s5. Also, the tradition of companions being orphaned or only having one parent goes back well before NuWho - Vicki Pallister was the very new first companion introduced after the show began (in season 2, after Susan's departure but before Ian and Barbara left), and the death of her only living parent was a key reason why she ended up with the Doctor. Now, admittedly, classic companions often didn't see their families talked about as much as modern companions, but when it did come up, it was often a similar situation. Victoria Waterfield, Nyssa of Traken, and Sarah Jane Smith are all orphans (the first two both losing her remaining in the story that led her to join the Doctor like Vicki, while Sarah Jane was raised by her aunt, a backstory that got explored a lot in the Sarah Jane Adventures). Others were estranged from family like Ace, and still more were aliens or people from other time periods who weren't brought up in a Western-style nuclear family, like Zoe and Romana. The modern series does more to explore the connections to home that companions still have, but it has always made sense with this kind of show to have characters who are missing some of the ties that the average person does, since that's the sort of person who would be more willing to leave everything behind to travel space and time with no guarantee of ever making it home.
Amy's family weren't dead, she lived with her aunt not adopted, they were taken by the crack! I think it is said Aunt always lived with them!
No. The psychic paper does NOT show the target what the doctor wants them to see. The paper shows them what they would need to see to let the doctor do what they want to do. The running gag in new who is that this is often very different than what the doctor would expect and the doctor usually doesn't find out what it shows until the other person actually told them what it says
The Doctor: The paper's slightly psychic. It shows them whatever I want them to see So actually what Ellie said is correct.
Technically it’s sort of both. The psychic paper will show them roughly what the doctor wants but also what they expect to see. So the doctor will be like “health and safety” and when flashing the paper they will see something along those lines.
@@friendlyotaku9525I think it depends on the showrunner. Moffat and chibnall use it more for comedic effect like the OP said, where as RTD used it more like it was intended.
@@stumbling_ also, if someone isn’t familiar with the psychic paper, it’s just easier to understand “it shows them what I want them to see” rather than “it shows them what I need them to see but that’s not necessarily what I want them to see and it sometimes takes a while to update itself to the new regeneration, especially if the last regeneration was a different gender, oh and it doesn’t work on some people who just see it blank when I wave it in their face” Edit: yes, I know Ellie acknowledges that it doesn’t work on everyone
I always thought it didn't work on wood because TARDISes were grown, not made, and the TARDIS is plant or tree-like. And because the TARDIS usually is used to craft a sonic its sort of a defense mechanism. Anyhow, that's my little headcanon.
I do also feel that it might be really, _really_ important to mention The Master, as we got that tease that they might be returning in the future during the episode where he defeated The Toymaker. The Master is a fellow time-lord whom the Doctor has known since childhood. The Master is absolutely _mad_ and nearly always a villain. Because of their history, there's a small chance The Master might come back as an ally, but certainly not a character to readily trust.
Glad he's getting a break
@@shemdellashemygd29 Still mad that after the redemptive steps Missy takes, we got nutter Master back again. Drumbeat is gone, why be nuts?
...also we can now have a way for the "The Valeyard" and "The Curator" to appear via the 14th.
I had not made the connection between the doctor using salt and all of the other events in the specials. That is really brilliant. Also “Mavity”
We did not first meet Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in 2012, because The Power of Three was not her first appearance. The character first appeared, along with her father played by Nicholas Courtney, Lis Sladen as Sarah Jane and Debbie Watling as Victoria, in the video spinoff Downtime in 1995. At the time, she was played by Beverly Cressman, but she was a lot younger.
Well said! You beat me to it by 30 minutes or so. The presenters of this channel have set themselves up as the experts on Doctor Who. They forget that there are many of us who have been watching Doctor Who for the entirety of its history and are very well versed in the whole shebang. Many would counter with saying “well this wasn’t meant for you” and I would accept that but the preachy “we know more than you” attitude is getting very tiresome. So is the way they refuse to apply any kind of critical approach is lacking in any kind of legitimacy. They refuse to examine the current state of the show with any kind of honesty. So far as they are concerned, they accept any and all nonsense from the showrunner, or actors, at face value & everything they are told is greeted with stupid whoops and hollers. I just wish they would stop talking down to us and realise that maybe, just maybe, there are many, many knowledgeable Doctor Who fans out here who are sick of their sugary sweet acceptance of this appalling ‘woke’ era of what once was a magnificent show!
What do you expect? They're kids. They weren't even around in the wilderness years, let alone the classic series. But yeah, deeply irritating.
@@tonyingram1337 She talked about it in a recent video. It's likely not referenced here because it's not considered canon.
By who? The mere fact that Kate made it ihto the main show says to me that it's canon.
@@tonyingram1337 Agreed! “Downtime” has always been considered canon by most people I know who have seen it. The original actors playing their established roles from the main show, how can that possibly not be considered canon? The only reason I can see for it not being included is that not many fans even know of its existence & when it gets mentioned many self professed fans just give a blank look. No, sorry, “Downtime” should definitely be considered as canon, in fact it should be celebrated due to it being the first appearance of Kate Stewart as you rightly point out.
I'm still gonna call it Series 14. I just don't think I can get used to "Season 1" lol. I respect what anyone else chooses but for me it's 14. Great Video guys :) one week and counting.
Urm……. Series 40. For me.
@@simonburley2692 Exactly! Kids these days. LOL :D
Didn't get the salt reference or significance until now TY for explaining that. This is one of the best tv series recaps ever 💖💖
My thoughts on why 10 was also 14, is this. Donna 'needed' someone to recognise. So, as she knew 10, that helped jog her memories so the story could play out as it has. If 14 had been someone else, she may not have known who they were.
Anyone see Ncuti Gatwa on Match Of The Day? The opening theme song was playing and it kept being interrupted by the TARDIS taking us through different eras of MOTD. Then it took us to a version where Ncuti's Doctor was ON the show opposite Alan Shearer (the presenter). It SERIOUSLY adds weight to Doctor Who being a TV show within itself
This is amazing - in 15 minutes you succesfully recapped 60 years. It is so hard to summarize a big thing and include just what people need to know to have a good time - and not make it boring... and you did this perfectly.
Custard Cream slander?! I'm reporting you to the council!
Here bud, don't forget your council axe. 🪓
Custom cream slander shall not be tolerated!
They're boring
Always thought it should dispense jammie dodgers (11th dr favourite) or something, all of time and space to find biscuits in and she gets fucking custard creams, supermarket value biscuits
All these new villains keep hinting at a bigger bad and I 100% certain it’s the council!
UNIT used to be called the United Nations Intellegence Task Force
Yes, I was going to mention that myself. Thank you fellow old fan. :)
You mention Mrs Flood but not Mrs Merrydew played by Susan Twist.
That awkward moment when you realize that most people relate more to the human companions of the Doctor, while you relate more to the Doctor themself... I'm gonna go out on a limb here: how many of y'all relate to this and are autistic/ADHD? 😂I suspect the overlap for us is stunning!
Sitting here feeling very much called out. LOL
what about Ace she was in The Giggle too
Don't you mean "The Power of the Doctor"? I don't remember seeing Ace in any of the 3 60th anniversary episodes.
You're right. It was Power of the Doctor.
BOOM!
I'm always annoyed when people say "The Doctor Never went back for Susan" without specifying "on TV." There have been a series of 8th Doctor stories on audio with Carol Ann Ford reprising her role as Susan. Leaving out even a wink and a nod to the expanded universe is kinda, to me anyway, craping on the work of the actor who continues to play the role from time to time.
Absolutely. Have they even bothered to investigate the expanded universe?
Also was Susan not in a multi doctor storey in classic or is this Mandela effect - I can picture her in like a cream trenchcoat type coat and with the doctor but now hartnell playing him lol
The Five Doctors, 1983. Hartnell's part was played by Richard Hurndall.
@@markcolgan3262 Yeah, the 5 Doctors, so yeah, Ellie forgot about that too!!
@@tonyingram1337 Almost never. Enough of us buy the audios to keep them in business pumping out content and salaries to all these actors, but do Ellie or whatshisname care? Nope. Maybe they're miffed they've not been invited to voice anything. Nick Briggs, let them be a space station AI or something!! 🤣
I'm just going to point out (AGAIN) that because the Doctor time travels there has always been more than one Doctor floating around at the same time. For instance nothing really says that the Second Doctor and the Sixth Doctor might not run into one another in 1985 for instance, aside from the occasional mumblings that the Time Lords don't like the idea, and that maybe they made it so the TARDISes themselves made the prospect harder just to avoid any inconvenient 'grandfather paradoxes' that might change all of Time Lord history. That is to say that the Doctor has a time machine that can travel all through space and time, and if they really wanted to, I'm sure they could find a way to visit their first self (that we the audience met at least) and help with that initial Cybermen invasion from Mondas back in what was the future of 1986. Technically, they all exist side by side, not just the 14th and 15th Doctors.
Thank you, thank you, thank you 😃 I’ve been trying to explain this often overlooked fact for so many, many years. I had to try again recently because of RTD’s lame bi-regeneration he put the 14th Doctor through. A person I was chatting to didn’t understand how there could be 2 Doctors at the same time. I tried to explain that because of time travel, any of the past or future Doctors could appear at any location and at any time during the entire existence of the Universe. This means, of course, that if you are ever lucky enough to meet the TARDIS one day there can be no guarantee which Doctor would emerge - it wouldn’t necessarily be the one who is currently on TV. Thank you for confirming this obvious consequence of being a time traveller.
@@chrisdooster748 Yeah, I kinda think it's the case that the current creative team want to come up with a sort of blanket explanation for why the Doctor's human actors look older when they return to do guest spots. Maybe. I'm not actually sure. I will give Chris Chibnall this, he did reintroduce some mystery into the show's titular character while still sticking to established if a bit round robin-ish show canon _(Brain of Mobius, Remembrance of the Daleks, et al),_ so I don't mind a _little_ zaniness with regeneration. We already kinda had that from RTD with the 10th Doctor and Donna and his human clone in Pete's World.
@@chrisdooster748 The bigeneration was done solely to have Tennant on standby in case the plummeting viewing figures plummet further. Unfortunately the Tennant "specials" had relatively low figures as well. Clearly bigeneration isn't needed to explain the multiple times the Doctors have met themselves... we've literally just had 13 meeting the Fugitive, and the Time Lords themselves proved the "Law" could be broken in times of great peril.
The exterior can and has changed in the past once or twice. The chameleon circuit was fixed but the police box became iconic.
In classic era Doctor Who UNIT stood for 'United Nations Intelligence Taskforce', however this was changed to 'Unified Intelligence Taskforce' as the United Nations did not want the fictional agency to be associated with the UN.
Is that why it changed? I never knew! Thank you!
I got to see the Tardis in person at Disneyland California yesterday they have a cool set up right at the front gates
Ah, my dream!!! 😃
Was it bigger on the inside? Or, did Disney overcharge an arm and a leg for a ticket so you didn't get to see? ;-P
Thanks. Great helpful background.
Such a cheeky and fun summary for the new viewers and longtime fans . You certainly gave me "The Giggle" watching it😂
A whisky bottle? Are you kidding me 😂
Well, to be fair, he was a drunken sailor/pirate... so.....
welcome back ellie, looking well. Take care sweetie (river song).
You didn't mention the most important person the doctors wife River Song.
The war doctor, 10 and 11 figured out wood... Maybe just that wood I can't remember but they got John hurt to start the sonic doing a thing that then allowed it to be finished in matt smiths sonic cause it's the same sonic and if I remember correctly that allowed them to use it on wood... 😅
Why did you say RIGHT around the corner, and show Donna turning LEFT?
Don't blame Ellie! Poor lass gets the blame for things out of her control 😉☺️
@@y_fam_goeglydto be fair some of her takes are utterly atrocious
@@roguexxrenegade I chimed in to defend her, but then I remembered the last two takes she had... 😅

@@y_fam_goeglydNo no no! I was more talking to the whole channel, mainly the editor. Ellie is innocent in this.
As a very casual viewer, this was very helpful! Thank you!
No mention of the Time war ?
Very helpful, i am going to try and get back into Who for the first time since Capaldi's run completely confused me haha!
The doctor said he didn't leave gallafry because he was a rebel or bored....he left because he was scared. He said this in hell bent
Heaven Sent. But other than that, you're right!
In old who, he has stated several times that he left because he was bored. In Heven Sent, he says that claiming he was bored was actually a lie and that he really left because he was scared.
8:27 How is it that this episode is one of the Ponds last episodes, introduced Kate and had that hilarious home invasion scene yet somehow it is super forgettable?
Don't know how new it was, but i saw a new to me promo for season 1 between the 5th and 6th episode of Tales of the Empire today on Disney+. Kind of a clip package of everyone saying Doctor in the new season.
The first doctor never going back to see Susan fits in with the "Doctor doesn't look back"
Except we have Big Finish and plenty of off screen time, novels, etc, to put paid to that theory. Susan shows up quite a bit in all that. :)
@eshbena None of which is really acknowledged in the show that often if at all.
I came here to learn a bit about classic doctor who which as the title says, things before season 1 yet there were a ton of spoilers here and cuts from the new doctor who that kind of tell you a lot about what can happen in the new series
I hope that the Intelligent Gloves from The Church on Sunday Road become another permanent part of The Doctor's toolkit. I know they shorted out at the end of the episode, but The Doctor could just make new ones
Actually, in Day of the Doctor, the Sonic Screwdriver should be able to work on wood. In fact, in 11's final episode, there's a moment where he comes across a wooden Cyberman and tricked it with the Sonic not working on wood DESPITE technically being able by that point. What if Ruby is actually the Doctor's granddaughter? Or maybe GREAT granddaughter.
No, The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver works on one wooden door in the tower of London ever since Day of the Doctor
@@sheersternfeld1914 Fair enough I suppose. So now it's confirmed to have a useless function.
@@SmartAlec86 it would be hilarious though if they came back to that, like, with the Doctor and whatever companion being trapped in that same room in the tower of London, and the Doctor just disintegrates the door.
First, while the war doctor starts an analysis of the door to disintegrate it, we never find out if it was actually possible. Clare opens the door as soon as 11 realizes the scan is complete. Second, you have the wooden cyberman backwards. The cyberman doesn't know it doesn't work on wood, so when the doctor shows that he sent a signal to reverse its weapon, it accepts it as truthful and rotates its weapon only to fire at itself. The doctor even states afterwards that he should have mentioned it didn't work on wood.
@@edwardpacewic7414 What'd I get backwards with the wooden cyberman? Everything you said is in line with my point. Although, with the wooden cyberman. If the Doctor didn't specifically activate the "wood disintegration" feature, anything else could potentially not work. So technically, it could be argued that the signal that the Doctor sent to the wooden cyberman to reverse it's weapon wouldn't have worked on wood.
It didn't happen in the show but in big finish... The 8th doctor visited Susan again and met his great grandson who actually hated the doctor
The last great time war was never mentioned. That is one of the most important things there is.
It kinda got retconned in Day of the Doctor though (yeah it still happened but ultimately neither the Daleks nor the Timelords went extinct so there's little real consequence) so I doubt it'll be that plot relevant in the coming seasons.
It's much less relevant now though, seeing as Gallifrey was saved and then destroyed in a completely different hand-wavey way. If they're going to talk about Gallifrey or Time Lords being gone, they'll maybe only barely mention the Time War (which was retconned over half of the Doctor's lifetime ago) and then move on to explain that it was the Master that destroyed them.
@@elliesteele2027 The time war still destroyed the Doctor. It turned the Time Lords bad and made the Doctor in his own words 'lose the right to be the Doctor'.
TARDIS is an English acronym. Gallifreyans do not speak English most of the time. Susan came up with the name, entered it into the TARDIS database, and the next time the doctor visited Gallifrey (and fiddled around with The Matrix for a bit, and also served as President for over 4 hours) that got uploaded as the english translation of the name (which had previously translated as "capsule").
Didn't Susan meet up with the doctor again in Lucie Miller's last story in the 8th Doctor adventures on Big Finish? I remember that she was in it, I can't remember if she ever saw him though.
Susan has been back a LOT in Big Finish, there is also a novel and a bunch else
Lis Sladen is sorely missed. Her passing hit me harder than any other celebrity passing.
Two thousand years? He was in the confession dial for 2 billion years and he remembers it all too!
You keep getting this wrong, the Doctor DID come back so Susan, in the 5 Doctors.
Not intentionally. They were both kidnapped via the Time Scoop.
@@christophermoore614 He still came back.
@@user-up5rv4zk3e To be fair, it is likely that when they left Rassilon's Tomb the Doctor took Susan back to 22nd Century Earth so the promise was fulfilled after all.
I am in the US and have missed the last few years of Dr. Who. Where can I catch up? Thank You
In the US, modern Doctor Who episodes (2005-2022) are available to stream on Max.
@@MichaelCoxMTG Thanks. I vaguely recall something last year saying that they would be on Disnay+ eventually, but was not certain.
There's this bay.... Where sail the pirates.... Everything you ever want is there
Hasn't happened THAT WE KNOW ABOUT (visiting Susan)
As a fan of 41 years and 4 months (yes, count the wrinkles) I think this is a great summation of all things Who - putting aside novels, audio dramas, Weetabiix* collectable figures with dioramas, and so forth. Roll on season 40 as far as I am concerned. 🎉 * A longstanding British breakfast cereal, although I gather it is available outside the UK too these days.😮
The Companions also serve as exposition fodder, to ask questions of the Doctor so that things can be "explained" for the audience...
Video needed five more minutes to summarize the top monsters of the Whoniverse.
Might also want to mention the characters played by Susan Twist. Mrs Merridew and the woman in the club.
I think that Ruby could be Susan chameleon arched by the big bad. I also think that 14 will be working behind the scenes to reset the universe to before he invoked the myth and he will end up dying/vanishing in season two and that will also reset the doctor so that the timeless child will have never happened.
As much as I rather like your wish list, I seriously doubt it.
In the original run UNIT stood for a United Nations intelligence Task Force, with each country providing its own military units.
My theory: Mrs. Flood is Susan, who's big climatic scene is when she regenerates inside the TARDIS into the ORIGINAL ACTRESS, Carole Ann Ford, who then viciously berates the Doctor for leaving her there almost 60 years ago.
That doesn't work because Susan was left in 22nd century london. PS The Doctor does interact with her in the expanded media.
The Doctor has been back to see Susan in several Big Finish audio stories.
I don't tink she can be Susan, or anyone who has specifically travelled with The Doctor. When she first sees the TARDIS blocking the street she is complaining that another neighbour must have put it there, and doesn't seem to recognise it. It's only later when it's moved that she realises what it is. Clearly she is familiar with the concept of a TARDIS - but not necessarily THAT one.
Also, he left Susan in a future earth with David, so she'd have to have travelled back from 2150
@@tonyingram1337 personally, I don't count other media...
Hey, that's Brigadier Allister GORDON Lethbridge Stewart... Lol

My favourite companion was Jamie
Yes, he was and is fantastic. :)
Tenalt was the 10th and 11th, because he regenerated into himself. Or if you like the meta crisis doctor was the 11th that was also him.
If Ruby isn't the women leaving herself on the doorstep of the church, I will be amazed. It's a bootstrap paradox. Same as stepping on the butterfly, in the trailer.
WOW. The sonic screwdriver would be more impressive if it could actually fix the chameleon circuits. Thank you for summing up 60+ years of abysmally bad product so I never have to. I always suspected it was shitty, but I never realized quite how bad.
THANKS for this!!!! Yes, love Kate Stewart!!!! And yes, it (14) was fine!!!
If they were smart, they would put in that the Doctor was the genetic bank for the Minyans. in the episode "Underworld". The Minyans had regeneration technology. See it? Yeah.

Excellent catch up. Looking forward to this season. But I will disagree with you in that I for one never liked Donna Noble. Her season and the new Tenant eps are tainted for me because of her. I am honestly slightly surprised that revisiting the Doctor's granddaughter never happened. Seems like it could be the plot of a decent episode. Edit: The surprise I have was more for her lack of a main series appearance. I would be far more worried if she didn't show up in the extended whoniverse after her initial departure from the show like mentioned in the replies to my comment.
I saw another commenter saying that they actually have had the Doctor see her again in expanded media, just not in the main show.
She came back in the Five Doctors in the 80's and was in the crossover charity special, Dimensions in Time, as well. Susan has returned many times in other media too. Ellie's writers are very young and probably haven't watched as much Who as us old timers. XD
