    • His book: "It's okay to be angry about capitalism." 🤣🤣ROFLMAO Says the bourgeois capitalist and pseudo-socialist who USED CAPITALISM to peddle his own book and make millions of dollars in the process. YES, HE IS A MILLIONAIRE. Whats funnier is that he refuses to hand over 60% or 70% (or more) of his earnings to the IRS (in taxes) voluntarily. I say this because this fraud belches out his anger about the rich not paying their "fair share" of taxes, WHICH HE REFUSES TO DO AS A MILLIONAIRE. In sum, comrade Marx would be turning over his grave if he had to hear this charlatan millionaire talk about socialism. He's a fraud....just another capitalist who markets himself as a socialist because he found a niche market for his book sales to the ultra-gullible.

  • Bernie spots on so many key issues in America. I work in a healthcare consulting company in corporate finance. The company belongs to one of the largest hospital networks in the States, ironically, I cannot afford to see doctors just for regular checkout because of the high deductibles. Three things happened, 1. my original employer was bought by a corporation and merged with other subsidiaries. 2. After the merge, employee benefit significantly reduced, all subsidiaries' employees reported the same. 3. The corp moved it's tax filing and payroll to a state with no state tax, even though all employees are remote working located to many states. It's a degrading to live in this reality, that I have a master degree, and working on my doctoral degree, have a moderate income but basic needs are not met. And the fact that I'm an immigrant, have a conservative mindset on spending but still cannot afford basic needs makes it even worse.

Unfortunately atm the progressive wing at the dems and the voters they represent aren't that big and because they are "socialists" many ignorant swing voters would not vote for them. They are however big enough to be king makers. In this case Trump became the kind. Imo, never gonna happen tho, both the dems and the gop need to split up so their different factions become parties on their own. Abolish the electoral college and have actual democratic elections. Create a majority by forming coalitions. And the person with the most votes behind his name gets to be president. It's obvious the current system is outdated, undemocratic and doesn't work anymore. The government can't do shit because they don't have a majority. How those that make any sense? Every term there's a shutdown.

People were fired at the drop of a hat and the management did not allow descent of any kind. If you even mentioned the word, union, you were at risk of instant dismissal. I am now retired and my advice to young people is that if you are ever offered employment with a company that hates unions, don't take the job! Anti union employers are simply afraid of unions because they are happy exploiting and abusing their workers!

    @robg5958@robg5958 Жыл бұрын
    • War story! I'm sincerely saddened that you experienced what you exposed, but by far, most companies are non-union, and they treat their employees as best as they can afford. Real small businesses, less than 50 people, are more family and community oriented and would not survive if they treated their employees badly. More importantly, most very small companies were started by everyday workers who were willing to take the risk and added responsibilities to rise above being an employee. I can state, as a matter of fact, that in my small business, which employed an average of 10 people plus hired many sub-contractors to do specialty work, my employees went home at 4 to 5 p.m., and I was still working at 11 pm. Also, they had their weekends off when I didn't. When we had work, I couldn't take a vacation because I had to run the company. When we didn't have work, I had to work to get work. I admit that is my "war story," but it is how many other small businesses, including my subcontractors, operated as well. It is so easy to place blame on some other entity and say, "get rid of them, and all will be fine," but that is not realistic. As for Bernie, he never successfully held a job in his life. He is all blowhard BS ideology with no substance. FYI: Due to a downturn in the economy, my business went bankrupt, in large part due to our government, but there was no bailout. I lost everything, but my employees just went on to other jobs and lost nothing. I'm not bitter. It was my choice and a set of circumstances. In fact, I welcomed the bankruptcy so I would get out of running a business that was killing me physically. When you wish to sling mud at what you perceive to be true across the board, it loses value. In your case, all you said may very well be true of the individuals who ran the company. But, like Bernie's ideological BS, it doesn't reflect the reality across a wide spectrum of companies, especially small businesses, and more people work for small businesses than are workers in large corporations. I wish you well.

      @MrFreshbreeze50EnjoyLife@MrFreshbreeze50EnjoyLife Жыл бұрын
    • @@MrFreshbreeze50EnjoyLife But the point Sanders was making did not talk about you small business being the exploiters of the working class, as he stated, 3 corporations have a majority share of 95% of the S&P 500. The companies of the s&p 500 own the majority of the major employing companies who aren't struggling to pay their employees at the expense of their own quality of life and compensation. Because of favorable business laws and tax systems geared towards large corporations, you had to experience bankruptcy which those major companies wouldn't have. The person you commented on im sure wasn't referring to small businesses, and neither does Bernie Sanders. In this speech he specifically mentioned that one of the biggest problems in the US economy is the fact that large businesses have taken over so many sectors where small businesses used to thrive that they can essentially outspend the competition. My family owned two coffeeshops before Covid and like you we had to sell both because of a decrease in demand, and to be honest the company wouldn't have been able to survive much longer anyway as my aunt who ran them already was working as an accountant on the side to make enough money to survive. Why is this possible? Because major chains can take the hit from an economic downturn and sell products for a much cheaper price than small businesses, and in the long term end up paying a lower tax percentage as well. You know who the largest corporate shareholders of Starbucks are? Vanguard, blackrock, and statestreet.

      @coffelt683@coffelt683 Жыл бұрын
    • @@coffelt683 We agree on a lot of points you made. Sadly, monopoly regulations aren't adequate for all the variables. I'm sure there is an answer, but Bernie doesn't have it. And, as we know, whenever laws are written, some will figure out how to get around them. Since you referred to my bankruptcy, please allow me to expose another angle. In my case, my business was in a city next to a major military facility. When Iraq invaded Quait, all the soldiers at that were sent to fight, which collapsed the local economy. Unlike a natural disaster, no government funds were brought in to alleviate the collapse. One of my business associates ran two car dealerships. Because car companies don't want their dealers failing, they supported him until the economy returned. I, being unassociated with a corporation, had no help whatsoever. Although weakened, I survived for ten more years, but due to additional local economic problems, eventually, I threw in the towel. Fast forward to today, and the city is booming again. It's just the way of business and how it is affected by forces that are not in our control. Different scenario, same result. But that aside, Bernie is no economic expert. Some of his figures (he loves to say five hundred thousand) are laughable. His political survival is based on pointing fingers and claiming injustices, but he has no solutions. Check his record. In all his decades of being in politics, he has perhaps one piece of somewhat major legislation that was passed. Before his political career, he was a total failure at everything he did. He not only couldn't hold a job, but he also couldn't run a successful business. He is brilliant only in the fact that he's made a career out of doing nothing but flapping his jaw about the injustices of the world but is hollow when it comes to solutions. I noticed he attacked billionaires. He used to attack millionaires, but he had up the figure because he is not a millionaire who owns three very expensive homes. He talks about the rich like their lives are so much better because they have a billion instead of a million. At what point does money just become more money, but a person's life doesn't improve? As he said, they have more money than they can spend in their lifetime. So, what are they doing with all that money? Hoarding it from the benefit and enjoyment of everyone else? No, they are investing it in companies that put millions of people to work. Besides, they don't have all the money. Millions of pension funds and individuals also invest in those corporations, and they look for a return on their investment. There is no way I can cover everything here in a short comment. The topic is way too involved for that. The problem is how to continue to allow growth while not allowing power to become dictatorial. The world wouldn't have the technical advances it enjoys today if it weren't for high-end corporations. No cars. No smartphones. No computers, etc., and the list goes on and on. Bernie just wants to make money bitching. He has no answer on how to balance it out. I don't think anyone does. And considering how corrupt the governments of the world are today, perhaps they are a bigger concern than the entities politicians like to deflect blame at.

  • Bernie Sanders is many things to many people - opponent to ally, hero to zero, icon to iconoclast and everything between- but what strikes me most about him, having heard him speak on many occasions, in many debates, campaigns, interviews, in real time and in documentary is just how much of a good-natured and generous person he is. Agree or disagree with his world view I think there's little doubt in any quarter that his convictions are as sincerely held as they are passionately expressed. In terms of articulation, authenticity and integrity the nearest political equivalents I can think of in the UK (aside from the obvious, who I think fails to match up on account of lacking Bernie's oratory prowess and, ultimately/unfortunately political courage) are Clive Lewis, Caroline Lucas, Mhairi Black, Zarah Sultana and- arguably - John McDonnell (although he's seemed to me a spent force since shortly before the 2019 GE). I firmly believe that if Americans and Britons were citizens of countries in which our 4th estates weren't owned and controlled by market-monopolising, bailout-billionaire 5th columnists who employ elitely educated playground gossips to push propoganda and pettiness on proles we would have far more 'Bernies' in politics, and our countries would be far better places for it. Forty years of what I sometimes call 'Murdoctrination' has been an unmitigated disaster for our civilisations by every civic, social and economic metric and the overwhelming majority of of us have paid a heavy price for the greed of the few. '"Free" market fundamentalism' has proven to be as costly and counter-productive a misnomer as 'The War on Drugs', 'The War on Poverty' and 'The War on Terror'. Greed is not Good. There is an alternative. We know this because in many ways much of the solution can still be seen in the rear view mirror of our respective and interconnected histories- the amelioration of poverty, universal suffrage, civil rights, equality laws, international solidarity, socialised healthcare, education and welfare, mixed economies, though imperfect were broadly utilitarian and egalitarian - synchronising post-enlightenment ideologies to wade off the threat of merely symbolic and superficial syncretics that turn to demagoguery, dictatorship, death and destruction. If we can at least carry the broad principles of the post-war consensus forward to a time where greater productivity + less physical labour = more time for leisure and learning then the developmental potential of our species advances exponentially. Collectively we cannot afford to let another generation of potential Einsteins and Hawkings to perish on the battelfield or never realise their talents surviving hand to mouth in the shadow of the unfathomable wealth and unwarranted power of 0.1% of the global population. Given that the people in control have driven people and planet to a cliff edge and that we're currently teetering on the cusp of catastrophe, overthrowing the status quo is no longer just a moral imperative, it is an existential one too. Anyway, excuse my clumsy attempt at constructing a didactic diatribe and thank you Oxford Union for hosting and posting this event. Having never set foot in the institution (closest I got in my fifty years was The Eagle and Child where I had a literature inspired pint or three on a fly-by once) I very much appreciate it. I feel privileged, and so it is with a happy heart that I now move on to the Q&A section. :)

  • "TO BE HOPEFUL in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places-and there are so many-where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." ~ Howard Zinn "The challenge remains. On the other side are formidable forces: money, political power, the major media. On our side are the people of the world and a power greater than money or weapons: the truth. Truth has a power of its own. Art has a power of its own. That age-old lesson - that everything we do matters - is the meaning of the people’s struggle here in the United States and everywhere. A poem can inspire a movement. A pamphlet can spark a revolution. Civil disobedience can arouse people and provoke us to think, when we organize with one another, when we get involved, when we stand up and speak out together, we can create a power no government can suppress. We live in a beautiful country. But people who have no respect for human life, freedom, or justice have taken it over. It is now up to all of us to take it back." ~ Howard Zinn "We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserves of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave-to the ancient enemies of man-half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all." ~ Adlai Stevenson kzhead.info/sun/Z9Fxe6ednKJvhHA/bejne.html "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." ~ Mahatma Ghandi
