OTHERWISE - Soldiers (OFFICIAL VIDEO). Taken from the album "True Love Never Dies", Century Media Records 2012.

The song began as a metaphor for the battle that unsigned bands go through to get their message heard as artists, then quickly transformed into an anthem for everyone living on the front-lines of life. "When I started writing the lyrics, I was staring at my bandmates and thinking that they are my brothers in arms," says the singer. "It was going to be our anthem, but by the time I finished I realized it was an anthem for our whole nation. We are all soldiers fighting for something, whether it's to put food on the table, to be heard, or just to be happy. Every soldier is human, and we're all human."

  • I read some of the comments below and many of them make me sad. I am a Captain in the military and I don't fight the front lines. My battlefield is in a medical tent healing those injured which is what I choose to do. My point to that is we all fight for something whether on a battlefield or in life in general. The point of this song and if you listen to the simple lyrics, "we stand shoulder to shoulder," is about erasing the hate, standing up... together..., and fighting that fight. It is the only way, no matter what battlefield, we can survive. I got the awesome chance to see him perform this live and he sent a great message conveying such. So I hope you guys stop looking too far into things creating controversy and accept the simple message that we all need to fight everyday together whether you are a soldier in the military or, as we all are, soldiers in life.

    • One more quick point... the very first images in this video state, "For the warriors who fight and die... so the rest of us may fight to live." Although, the video primarily focuses on the civilian side of the house, he definitely puts a shout out to my brothers and sisters-in-arms for what they do. He did that do I saw him as well. Good luck in your fight.

    • You're absolutely right; the message is fantastic and, while it definitely gives a well deserved shout out to the forces, it's also about fighting through trouble in all walks and areas of life. This shit stirring has to stop so we can enjoy the song for what it is!

  • I remember joining the Army several years ago and life has been a rollar coaster ever since. I've had my good times and bad times, and admittedly, I've had moments in my life where I thought about how much I want to give up. I remember hitting a bad time in my life where I delved deep into drinking on a nightly bases and almost became reliant on alcohol so I can quit feeling the negative feelings that I went through. But I remember playing this song while drinking a beer and remembering what this song was to me. This was the song that played during my graduation ceremony from BCT, and we were holding the back of the uniforms of each other as we raced through the smoke. It was during the part "we stand shoulder to shoulder" that we all marched together in formation. Listening to this song and watching video of the individuals who must have also went through hard times in their lives, remembering the reasons why I'm serving, and knowing I'm not in this alone, I dedicated time to over come the pains I suffered through. I managed to quit drinking and found ways I can better myself as a person. To become stronger, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well. While I still struggle to be more social, especially in light of the world we're living in today, I just need to remember that everyone is going through a tough time and we all have inner demons we're facing daily. The battles are tough, but we're all in this life together, and I hope that maybe one day, we all can win our battles that we face. We stand shoulder to shoulder, brothers and sisters, and let no differences between us separate us.

If one soldier dies the enemy will have to go through our entire military to face our wraith. When you die, soldier, cop, civilian, you death will not be in vain. You will all remembered. I want to give a huge thank you to our vets, active duty soldiers and police men(firefighters doctors and EMS) for your service and making MY country a safer place.

We are nothing like the men that watch their brothers die in front of them, not being able to help. We are nothing like the men that return home traumatized, missing limbs, missing themselves. If it is for people struggling with depression, suicide or any of the things you mentioned, then it's perfect for that as well :)

    • Actually that is false, the actual song is talking about real solders and giving them thanks for fighting and risking their lives to allow the people back in the US to fight their own battles back home. It is not equating military service (A.K.A. real soldiers) to civilians fighting to live on.

I tell them, though I have taken an oath to defend our country, they can do their part by being a citizen soldier in their community. Ultimately, it takes every American doing their part, to make our country the greatest hope for freedom and prosperity. We the People, must not allow our government to dictate what is or is not in our best interest. We must take back our voice and stand united against tyranny and oppression. We are Soldiers.

    • +Christopher Rothermel The song began as a metaphor for the battle that unsigned bands go through to get their message heard as artists, then quickly transformed into an anthem for everyone living on the front-lines of life. Every soldier is human, and we're all human." That came from the Desc.

  • My mom dedicated this song to my cousin when he was diagnosed with DIPG. It’s an inoperable cancerous tumor attached to the brain stem. No kids with this type of tumor lives. He asked the doctor if he’s going to die, and he told him yes. We got to spend 9 more months with him until he died, on hospice, in my grandparents home, in his room, in the middle of the night, as he was being snuggled by my mom. We fought until the very end with him. This song will forever be embedded in my heart. My family stuck together like glue for him, through all the treatments and difficulties of this disease. Not a day goes by where we don’t think about him. He would be about 20yrs old right now. When I struggle in my personal life, I think of him, and how he didn’t get a choice in whether he was going to live or not, I do. Everyday, I love for him. Everyday, I move, I get up, I do, I conquer, I don’t give up, I teach my children to keep going, I will never take what I have for granted again, and in all I do, I will continue to honor him with living the best life that I can, and bring him with me into all that life has to celebrate. “Don’t cry, blue skies”-Brandon James Shively FOREVER SEVEN!!!

His training company was screened behind some trees across the parade field and under a small earthen bern. The DIs threw out some smoke and the PA started playing this song. The company came marching the bern through the smoke appearing to just materialize. It was very moving.
