Asus ROG ALLY Keyboard Issue (not displaying on setup/wi-fi)

The solution: Hold down the rear macro button and the up button on the left D-pad. If all else fails you can use a USB/USB-C Keyboard/hub to type.
An issue with the Asus ROG Ally was the keyboard is not appearing or show up when you set up the Wi-Fi on the device. Clicking and opening the side menu will not show the keyboard.

    • For anyone seeing this, just press 'Skip this step" and you will set up the keyboard soon

    • @@RompiaK There was no option to skip that step on mine. I had to either set up the network, or nothing.

  • What about when you turn on the rog and randomly the keyboard just stops appearing automatically? I setup ages ago and have all updates, its worked until just now where the screen is always zoomed out and the keyboard no longer auto appears..

  • Thanks, same issue out of the box here. Hilariously half baked software out of the box. The first update there were like 20+ on windows update, plus a bios update that wiped out my windows pin, I suspect due to bitlocker issues or whatever. Oh well, fun times with early adopting. Love the hardware though.

  • I'm not even getting that menu and I tried the macros thing too and it still won't pop up. Guess I'll be getting the Steam Deck, hopefully mods work on that.

  • I was having the same issue with the keyboard, Thanks. The worst part is I opened up my ROG Ally right now at work and the plastic lining had dust all over it and the screen had a small deep scratch on it. I will have to return it later today at BB. I just don't understand how there would be a scratch on it already and the dust inside of the plastic film,, SMH...

    • @@brandon20904 I also didn’t even have the white instructions quick guide that comes over the Ally. Didn’t even realize until I seen some unboxing videos today. I was able to return at BestBuy, I have a new one coming in a week.

    • @@marcodiam4401 This thing is really buggy. The shortcut worked each time but then it stopped once. I ran an update and have yet to see it happen again. You can use a USB-C keyboard or use USB-C hub/adapter for a normal USB keyboard. You can also do a cloud reset if those don't work. This really sucks...

    • @@marcodiam4401 my shortcut button wasn’t working either , but after the 5th time it worked, but then I didn’t have access to the keyboard. I ended up returning mine at BB and waiting for a new one that’s coming next week. Hopefully my second experience will be better 🙏🏼

  • Sadly I had to restart once prior to getting there. Just select the proper keyboard and don’t try to skip that step. Not sure if it matters but annoying to have to reload before setting up.

  • Any idea how to get the built in keyboard to work in game? I’ve tried mapping buttons and everything else I can think of and nothing works not even shortcuts

    • As a follow up…yep I returned the Ally! Bought a Steam Deck instead and I’m so much happier with the experience. 2TB SSD upgrade and it good to go!
