1930 German Stabila Spirit Level - Restoration
Antique Stabila Level with Egona Garantie and Stabila marks , made of Indian teak wood ( tropical hard wood ) .
I bought this level a year and a half ago with the intention of restoring it, but I later thought that it was not worth the restoration . I abandoned it in my workshop, and a month ago I discovered that the ones from the Stabila company are still working. I asked them some questions and decided to restore it.
The level is made of hard wood and brass. Has some brass rings missing but I was able to recreate them on my lathe. I found a way to restore the old logos by engraving them with a laser and I changed almost all glass parts. I hope this restoration video will be on your taste ! Thanks for watching !

I hope you enjoy this restoration video and if you have questions , please write them in comment section and I will answer as soon as possible. Cheers guys and have a nice weekend !!
I was already looking forward to another video from you, David. Cheers, friend! 🍻
This was one of my favorite videos of your restorations!
Very nice restoration ❤ i love your work 😊 I found a little mistake: the word on the sticker is not 'Wasserwagge'. I'm german myself and i think it's spelled 'Wasserwaage'😬 Looking forward to your next videos 😊
Shouldn´t the Sticker have "29.5cm" on it now? 😅
0:07 und 12:17 Wasserwaage😊. Sonst gut!👍
i'm pretty sure the original Egona level never was this beautiful when this was new😂👏 You are on the next Level!👍
Thanks a lot Tysy ! Happy holidays 👌👍
Stabila - is original OEM manufacture for Egona
Was the pun intended? :)
Nice pun.
Ya know it's good when Tysy jumps in to compliment! Great work. :)
After all these years and thousands of restoration channels popping up, I rarely find myself enjoying restoration videos anymore. But yours mate was so SATISFYING to watch! Top notch work, amazing filming and editing, such a clean and well lit set! FELICITARI!
Mulțumesc frumos ! I’m in the same feel but I have some preferred channel and I watch only on them. You should make videos again, you were on my preferred list too. Cheers mate !
So cool watching the new labels being burned / etched / lasered into the wood!
so cool having u spoil the video
@@lemau8458 Go outside and touch some grass 🙄
I thought it cool too watching this process, certainly a machine I would love to own
@@Lynx251 dang bro u came out to kill him.
I can see why you wondered if an old spirit level was worth the effort, but it certainly was. The result is amazing. These old everyday tools were quality made so can become things of beauty. Good to see you back 😊
Thank you very much Steven and glad you enjoyed 😊
Honestly so wholesome to see that Stabilo has not only answered, but sent you some cool things… not many companies do this…
Yeah, they are a great team 👌
Nice work. There is a small error though: on the label it says Wasserwagge instead of Wasserwaage.
Hallo Klotz, du hast aber ein scharfes Auge.❗ 🧐 👍 Freundlichst Willi . . . 🙋♂️
Ooops.
@@willischumer6718Ich auch, Willi!
The fact that both of the capsules were intact was incredible to me. Nice work; that's a *beautiful* tool!
Thank you very much Patrick 😊
The one thing I'm wondering is if the original was in fact exactly 30cm long as it says on the side, because you cut off a bit from both ends. Might be worth adding some brass rectangles on both ends to bring it back to exactly 30cm if so. In any case, it's an amazing restoration, great job!
Thank you very much Katie 😊
it won't matter- it's used to measure level, not length. 30 cm was chosen as it could sell to the UK-American market as a foot, and still sold as a 60cm (2 foot) and 100cm (Type 133) and its' accuracy tested and advertised as either minutes per foot or yard (3 feet = 3x12inches (2.54cm)).
Hallo Katie, das ist eine tolle Eingabe von Dir.❗👍 🤝 💐 Freundlichst Willi . . . 🙋♂️
@@originalsusser Short cut measure for what? Those multitude times you need an exact 30cm measure but only have this level to hand? What do you do when you need to measure 40cm? All the modern Stabila levels of the various styles are labeled in cm &/or Inches yet NONE of the 8 or so I have of various types measure exactly the length. For example the type 96-2 in size 183cm/72inch measures 182.5cm to the outsides of the rubber ends. The Type 70 80cm/32inch measures 79.7cm, again to the ouside of the plastic plug ends. No, it doesn't matter.
I started writing this and then i saw your comment and deleted it haha.
Brilliant. I didn't think you could save the piece of wood. Thank you for investing the time to share this restoration with us.
Thank you very much Greg and glad you liked it so much 😊
I'm always suprised when old levels still have the bubble in them without being broken. Beautiful work!
Yeah, because that’s why they have glass covers
Replacement bubbles are, I hear, virtually unobtainable
@@iainwelsh9372 LOL
A functional work of art! I’m so glad you took the time to restore that old wood. Nothing like it exists anymore. Many restorers have thrown out the old wood, which is devastating in my mind. The new, thicker and superior brass rings brought this project to an echelon achieved only by master craftsmen. Bravo sir!
Thanks Curtis and glad you enjoyed my video so much 😊 cheers
Your restorations are simply amazing and it’s a joy to watch how you give them a second life! Only one thing to point out the German word for level on the white sticker should be spelled with ‘aa’ and one ‘g’ aw in Wasserwaage. Keep the restos coming
Thanks a lot Peter ! And glad you liked it so much . It was hard for me to read on that washed sticker . Honestly it has more sense to me with double g but in German, you have right , it’s double a 👍
if you had written 29 cm instead of 30 cm, it would be absolutely unique!@@CoolAgainRestoration
*_Not many people could have done this restoration. Great job!_*
When I saw the miniature I almost didn't watch the video, but I did, and did again, your restoration made this level a piece of art.
Thanks a lot Jose ! Can I ask if you don’t mind , why you didn’t wanted to open the video when you saw the thumbnail? Maybe was something wrong and I can change that in the future. Thanks a lot !
@@CoolAgainRestoration sorry, your thumbnails are perfect. It just because a level doesn't look (to me) attractive to see as restoration. But I was completely wrong. I enjoyed a lot your work, and the result is fabulous.
Aaaah, ok. I thought is something bad with the thumbnails and I can change it in the future for you, to not dismiss a nice video because of a picture. We are good then! Thanks a lot for your watching and support ! Cheers 🍻
The restoration was wonderful. Another thing I enjoyed seeing: your beautiful little daughter Maria. Beautiful! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you very much my friend Alvaro 👍👍👍 🇧🇷
Superb restoration as always. The polishing of the brass came up beautifully 👍
Thanks Ashley and glad you enjoyed 👍
I really liked the results of this project. I especially appreciate the fact that you didn't use gold leaf. I've seen several projects by other creators as of late that did and they look horrible.
let me check your videos 😂
they may not be using gold leaf, but brass leaf. You can now get many metals as leaf- copper being very popular for chrome/silver/gold plating plastic parts.
@@TysyTube come on man it's just his/her opinion. Can't change much about that.
Not sure how metal ("gold") leaf could ruin a project...
@@kenc2257 then you've never seen it.
You give it back its past beauty and make it look glorious.
I bought an old brass and wood level at a thrift store the other day to restore, I'm gonna rewatch this when I get around to it. Nice Video!
Thanks a lot Henk 😊
Nice work my friend and a satisfying video as always. I liked the dog you layed out with the brass parts 🐶
I thought that looks like a dog from emoji but I wasn’t sure 😅 glad we have the same vision
That's beautiful! I hope the folks at Stabila watch the video and see how wonderfully you restored it!
They have to watch the video on Monday 😎👍
Always a good day when Cool Again Restoration shows up on my KZhead feed!
Glad to hear that Bruce 😊
You've gotta be like one of the top five restorers on KZhead, hands down! You do great work! 🙂
Thanks a lot for this compliment 😊
Wonderful restoration, just one minor issue:The word on the label is supposed to be Wasserwaage, not Wasserwagge.
Thank you very much Dennis 😊
Bro, the laser feature is so sick! I love the final result. Seams so luxury for a tool. Realy nice of Stabila team that they sent you merch. Save me a sticker. How did you cut the glass round?
Yes, the part I was most looking forward to was to see how you cut (ground?) the round glass. Great work anyway!

Thanks a lot mate 😊
A beautiful restoration! Reminiscent of a bygone era when quality and craftsmanship prevailed. 👍🇨🇦
Thank you very much Paul and glad you liked it so much 😊
Perfect Restoration, would have done it exactly the same! Only small mistake I noticed, it says Wasserwagge with two G‘s at 12:50 when the German word is spelled Wasserwaage with two A‘s 👍🏻
Thanks a lot mate. Yeah, I already know that . My bad because I wasn’t able to read on that washed sticker
But did it stay 30cm when you cut the ends?
You made that look so simple. Another fine job. Keep them coming!
Thanks and glad you liked it 😊
You and my mechanics are the best!
Thanks for this compliment, Gabriel 👍
There's something oddly poetic about the newest version of a Stabila level being used to calibrate this older version.
True 😊
The label is now lying... 33cm... after you've cut the ends 😄
When talent combines with a rich workshop this is exactly what you expect.
Thanks Mustafa 😊
Extremely meticulous this restoration, with excellence in equipment.. congratulations
Thank you very much and glad you liked it 😊
Wow! Just beautiful. It's belongs on your desk now as a treasured keepsake. Way too nice for the workshop. Thank You!

Level vials have always been so fascinating to me, from the color, to the applied physics of the bubble, and how fragile it seems, yet remains reliable.
Sir, I know you have tinkered with cameras, camera angles, focal points, lighting, sound, timing, but what you have now is perfect, don't change anything. Award winning content.
Thank you very much TQ J 😊 glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Straight to the museum ☺️👍
You did such an amazing job !!! Very instructive video. And the knob !! 😱😳😍 Simply beautiful 🙌
Thanks a lot mate 😊

Thanks for your confidence Mustafa 😊
You could age the paper label by soaking it in tea water. Great Job !!!
Thank you very much 😊
Such unbelievable work.. never stop doing this work, I’ll watch for the next 60 years
You have a long life 😅👍
You've turned something old into something better than it was when it was originally new. Nice work.
Thank you very much Steve 😊
Really good ! First time I see a perfect restoration of wood engravings.
Thank you very much Rodrigo 😊
I have come to a phase in life where I really can appreciate a fine piece of wood, and that one is just beautiful in my eyes. That teak with those brass parts is a great combination. Well done on the restoration as always!

Beautiful work! Thank you!
Indeed "Cool Again" David! That old "torpedo" level as we call them here in the U.S., restored into a true work of art. Would have been a shame to consign that to the bin. Thank you for restoring a fine old tool back to like new, it's gorgeous! And thank you as always for your great work and videos. God bless. Rev. D.
And thank you for your every time support 😊 cheers mate

Thanks a lot Brian 😊
Amazing work!! Loved it.
Thanks a lot Scott 😊
I own a stabila 600mm wood level that is even in worse condition than your own was but seeing your magical restoration gives me hope that my dream of restoring it is possible. I might send some before & after pics to stabila for some freebies, but I wouldn't need a free level as I own a vast range of sizes & types & all are stabila... the best there is
Good luck with the project made. In every tool is a hope of life 👍
I actually have one of those newer Stabila levels! Very cool to see the restoration of a classic! Beautiful job, as always!
