Why I Devoted Family Wealth To Helping Singaporeans Age With Grace | Singaporean At Heart - Part 4/4

When Mary Ann Tsao left Hong Kong for the US at the age of 12, it set her on the path of learning about social medicine - how health outcomes often depend on one’s circumstances, such as poverty and gender.
When her grandmother set up the Tsao Foundation in Singapore in 1993 and asked her to run it, Dr Tsao brought that training and approach to pioneering a community-centre care model here for the elderly. It helped them to age in place with initiatives like the Community for Successful Ageing in Whampoa. Though she faced sceptics then, today, that approach is at the heart of integrated care across an ageing Singapore.

  • What the Tsao Foundation & Dr MaryAnn is doing is beyond any measure of altruism.S'pore is very fortunate for Dr Tsao's grandmother to choose it for their fantastic good works. Dr Tsao's passion in her socio- medic work and her hands-on approach is amazing! God bless her and her wonderful family !

  • If she were a Singaporean and has politicial inclinations, I'd really put her as my first choice for PM (assuming you can elect one) or at least Health Minister. She has clear visions and know what to tackle on to achieve the desired outcome. This is the type of foreigner that surpasses all others.

  • It is said that $$$ cant buy happiness ! Not even a cent can be taken with oneself when one leaves this world ! Leaving one's legacy behind after one's dermise will be truly worthy ! May God bless this charitable kind lady . In life, it is not the rich that teaches the poor but the other way round ! They teaches one about Humility , Tolerance , Care , Love , Relationshipsetc Those are the values of SUCCESS in life that one cant buy ! Good Luck We must be grateful & ALWAYS thank God !

  • It's touching to see the noble Singaporean in the money orientated island nation. There is always hope in us, people, poor or wealthy. It takes only a stride to reach out to the needy. The rich must realise their wealth and comfort is built on taking away the privileges from the struggling.

  • healthcare is more than medical tests and treatments. It is a system of care for the whole person. Thanks, Dr Mary Ann Tsao. You were way ahead of time. Today we are talking about "stepped care" or "integrated care". We still have much to do to make it fully comprehensive and effective. What you have done for geriatric care, can be done for persons of all ages.

  • A few of my friends, when they reached 63 they were automatically converted from full-time staff to contract staff. Isn't this ageism. They want to continue to work n contribute to the community. We need a voice for our elderly workers.

  • I guess by watching the participants in the activity Center it maybe true that male don’t live as long as female. Nonetheless, it is a very good report on elderly care indeed the society were harsh towards the elderly but with NGO like Tsao it makes their reminding time on earth less daunting.

  • The grandmother was smart to be wanting to base the foundation in Singapore instead of Hongkong. It is probably that she knows that one day Hong Kong will no longer be free and becoming what is seemingly “Han Chinese province of Hong Kong”
