  • Dude, I was just about to buy the DMT magnetic holder when I came across this vid. So glad I did. The plexiglass cut out is a super idea. I have a 2'x3' granite slab as my sharpening station so this will be perfect. Thanks for saving me $30 bucks!

  • I have really enjoyed your videos.. tried for years to make due with my bench grinder and a scary sharp jig I built myself. But now I have a 14x22 granite base, with plexiglass cover as you use. Two DMTs VCourse/Fine and Fine/Vfine. Bought a General blade holding jig. I now have truely flat blades and touching up an edge is not a 30 minute project. Thanks

  • Hi, do you find that the DMT 6" x 2" stones are wide enough to sharpen plane blades? I'm on a tight budget but wouldn't want to purchase something I might end up regretting. It's quite a bit of a price increase between the 6" x 2" and 8" x 3". Also, which grits do you recommend again? Thanks so much. Love your videos.

  • Would you suggest the continuous diamond or the polka dot diamond, and also a 4 inch stone or a 6 inch stone.The tools i'm sharpening are only going to be 1/2 max and maybe once in a while a knife.

  • These work on all HSS tools. These stones are designed for final edge honing and not for bulk stock removal. The 5% cobalt tool steel are extremely hard and any sharpening of them is possible but slow.

  • I am on a budget too but do not feel I am missing anything by using the 2x6 stones. The main thing is if your jig will allow you to use the whole stone. Have you seen the sharpening jig I invented since I made this series? There are lots of videos of me using it with my 2x6 stones sharpening all kinds or big and small edges. I use the 2-sided stones. Extra Coarse/Coarse and Fine/Extra Fine. Allan

  • I have the polka dot stone set and it is getting pretty tired. I recently ordered a set of Trend brand sharpening tools. One is the credit card size and the other has a handle with a small flat blade type. I saw on the video the guy was sharpening carbide Easy Wood Tools cutters. Any experience sharpening that type of tool. Seems a waste to simply discard them. I will know soon enough, because they should arrive tomorrow. I enjoy your very informative and down to earth videos. Thanks....Ken

  • I can't see that being a problem at all. I have several Norton stones I also use on curved blade knives before going diamond. Diamond stones should not be used with oil, which is a poor cutting fluid. It is a lubricant. I like the Simple Green/ water mix. Really flushes cut particles out of the way so the tool is always presented to fresh cutting edges. I really like to use a loop to examine edges while sharpening. It ends up saving time.

  • I use a 50/50 mix of Simple Green/Water. No rust promotion. Non toxic. Cheap too. And most importantly it really holds the cuts metal particles in suspension so they do not interfere with the cutting action. I have invented a new sharpening jig that takes all the learning curve out of sharpening. There are videos about it here on my channel but also on my tool company site VerySuperCool Tools where it is for sale and more videos. Allan

  • A few questions please 1. What is that fluid you re using for lubrication ? 2. Do those metal-diamond blocks ever need flattening like other ceramic stones? Thank-you.

    @pakpukik@pakpukik9 жыл бұрын
    • The fluid is a 50,50 mix of water and Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner. It has a higher specific gravity that water so the cut particles are really well held in suspension. Diamond stones stay flat and require no maintenance.

  • Oil is not a cutting fluid. It is a lubricant that creates a sliding space. If you have used oil, clean the stones with good detergent that will disperse the oil. Water is ok on the stones as cutting fluid, but you have to dry them after each use so there is no rust. There are water based cutting fluids that work great with no rust problem. I use Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner cut 50/50 with water. It works great and is cheap. I never dry the stones and there is no rust.

  • I use the DMT flat stick diamond stones.Under $10. Usually i just buy course with the blue handle. I use them to sharpen carbide router bits and the stellite tipped Hitachi band saw blade. The key to using these is really pound on the fluid to keep flushing the cut particles out of the way. Have you watched some of the newer videos with the Ultimate Sharpening Jig I invented? Thanks for watching and taking your time to write. Lots more on the way. Allan

  • Diamond stones do not break or crack. They are pretty much all I use because they can take abuse and remain flat even after years of hard use. I can't send a link here, but please check out the new sharpening jig videos where I talk about these stones more. I buy DMT brand because they are a great value. They are readily available from Woodcraft or Amazon. I have the 2 sided 2x6 stones.Allan

  • I’m confused with whether one should use a lubricant as you have done in this video or use them dry. I’ve seen where people recommend using them dry and also wet. Could you advise please. Love and peace. Tim

    @timmarshall4881@timmarshall48812 ай бұрын
    • I am not using a lubricant. I am using a cutting fluid. A lubricant creates a sliding space between parts. A cutting fluid allows the tool to directly interact with the cutting medium and flushes the spent particles into suspension. Cutting dry makes no sense. The cut particles will interfere with the cutting action at the interface.

  • Go with flat continuous. I don't care for the polka dots. Have you seen the videos I have posted about the new jig I invented called the Ultimate Sharpening Jig? Incredible versatility for any shape or size of tool. There are a lot of videos about using it on my channel. It also really shines because it does not need large stones to get max stroke.

    @AskWoodMan@AskWoodMan10 жыл бұрын
  • I really think I should get diamond plates. I bought a decent cerax water stone and I have to flatten both grit sides every two plane blades. That may well be less than 100 sharpening's, if you're not painstakingly careful, before the stone vanishes. And it doesn't grind the steel like a madman either! When my jointer's 50 mm ~59 HRC blade gets dull it takes closer to 30 full strokes on the coarse 3000 before I get a burr!

    @Tome4kkkk@Tome4kkkk7 жыл бұрын
  • Do you have to flatten out your dmt stones after you use them to keep the stones even when sharpening?

    @TikisofLA@TikisofLA10 жыл бұрын
    • No. That is the beauty of diamond stones. They stay flat and require no maintenance. When I first started woodworking I bought water stones. They were such a pain to keep flat I felt I was working for them.

    • AskWoodMan Thank you for responding. I am very new the sharpening world and have been watching many youtube videos to prepare me to sharpen my chisels. I have been using a standard table grinder but it seems insufficient for the work I do. From all the information I gathered, if I am correct I need these three diamond stones, which are in my amazon basket right now: DMT D8C (325) DMT D8E (600) DMT D8F (1200) Will these stones suit my needs, what am I missing? Do I need a honing guide, if so what simple honing guide would you recommend? Much appreciated.

    • TikisofLA Actually, after doing a little more research cost wise. The dmt 6 inch stones are cheaper and I will save about 75 bucks. I assume I do not need the 8 inch stones but I will lose a inch width wise (dmt 8 inch stones are 8 by 3 and dmt 6 inch stones are 6 x 2). My biggest chisel is a little over an inch. Will the DMT 6x2 seal the deal? thanks again.

  • It's ok for the diamond file to use sharpening oil to lubricate instead of water?

    @djperezhitparade@djperezhitparade9 жыл бұрын
    • No oil will foul the stones. You are not looking for a "lubricant" you want a "cutting fluid". A lubricant creates a sliding space. This is not what we want with this type of sharpening. We want the tool to contact the cutting stone and the cut particles to be held in suspension so they do dot interfere with the interface of tool and stone. Oil does not do this.

      @AskWoodMan@AskWoodMan9 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks. This video was useful for me.

    • DAVID PEREZ Thanks David. The cutting fluid I use is a 50/50 mix of water and Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner. It has a higher specific gravity than water alone so it really does a fantastic job of holding the cut steel particles away from the cutting interface. And the mix does not promote rust. It is constantly flushing and cleaning the stones as I sharpen. It is cheap and nontoxic so you can really use it liberally to really get on with the sharpening task.

  • What kind of fluid do you use? Can I use just water?

    @anthb322@anthb3223 жыл бұрын
    • It is a 50/50 mix of Simple Green and water. You can use water only but the mix is better because it has a higher specific gravity and does not promote rust.
