K-21 Infantry Fighting Vehicle | SOUTH KOREAN TROOP TRANSPORT
The South Korean K21 Next Infantry Fighting Vehicle (NIFV), was developed in South Korea to replace the ageing KIFV. Development commenced in 1999. Eventually the new IFV was adopted as the K-21. Its production started in 2008 and approximately 900 vehicles were planned to be built. First vehicles were fielded in 2009. The K-21 is superior to most of the current IFVs in many respects. It also costs twice cheaper to build this vehicle comparing with the M2 Bradley IFV. It was expected that this armored vehicle will have some export success due to its low price.
The K-21 is lighter comparing with most modern IFVs, as it was designed using composite materials to save weight wherever possible. Composition of the K-21 armor is still secret. It is assumed that this IFV has multi-layer armor with glass fiber, ceramic and aluminum alloy. It is known that front arc provides protection against 30 mm armor-piercing rounds. All-round protection is against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. Vehicle is also fitted with automatic fire suppression and NBC protection systems. The K-21 can be also fitted with active protection system, similar to that used on the South Korean K2 Black Panther main battle tank.
As far as the main drawback of the KIFV was a weak armament, the K-21 comes with a much more substantial Bofors XK 40 mm cannon. This cannon is combined with advanced fire control system for better fire accuracy. Such fire control systems are usually fond on the latest main battle tanks. It fires anti-tank, HE-FRAG, smoke and multi-purpose ammunition. The K-21 also carries two indigenously developed ATGW launchers, but exact details and number of missiles carried are unknown. There is also a 7.62 mm machine gun. Overall the K-21 has significant anti-armor capability. It can easily defeat enemy armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. It also poses significant threat to main battle tanks.
Vehicle is operated by a crew of 3. The K-21 can carry up to 9 fully equipped troops. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via a rear power-operated ramp with integral doors. Also there are roof hatches for firing and emergency exit. The K-21 infantry fighting vehicle has a great degree of advanced high-tech systems used including battle management system, internal navigation, vehicular information systems and identification system which recognizes friend and foe vehicles.
Vehicle is powered by a South Korean Doosan D2848LXE turbocharged diesel engine, developing 680 hp. This infantry fighting vehicle has a hydro-pneumatic suspension and advanced running gear. The K21 IFV is fully amphibious with minimum of preparation. It uses automatic built-in flotation bags in order to stay afloat. These floatation bags are activated, before entering the water. On water this armored vehicle is propelled by its tracks. Speed on water is 6 km/h. This allows the K-21 IFV to cross lakes and rivers.
In 2013 a light tank prototype, based on the K-21 has been revealed. It was fitted with a Cockerill XC-8 lightweight concept turret, armed with a choice of 105 mm or 120 mm gun. This light tank was jointly developed by CMI Defence of Belgium and Doosan DST of South Korea. The combination of the K-21 IFV chassis with belgian turret resulted in a highly mobile vehicle with significant direct fire capability. Due to its lighter weight this light tank is more strategically and tactically mobile, comparing with main battle tanks.
In around 2014 another light tank based on the K-21 chassis, the K21-105, has been revealed. It was developed by the same companies, but is fitted with a CT-CV 105HP turret, armed with a 105 mm gun.
Hope you enjoy!!

K21 Infantry Fighting Vehicle | SOUTH KOREAN TROOP TRANSPORT
Like this vehicle? Check out its Japanese cousin! kzhead.info/sun/g8WontiLppdvqKM/bejne.html
I like it. Especially the 4 atgm's with 4km range. 9 dudes in the back....I'd be happy with 8, so I'm impressed. IFV aren't just infantry carriers...they are Tank Destroyers.
The upgraded version for the Australian land 400 phase 3. AS21 Redback. If we pick this we may also get there SPG Thunder which was cancelled back in 2012 but is being looked at again to be purchased. kzhead.info/sun/qLmpl755inmko4U/bejne.html kzhead.info/sun/g62rpb5wr6N5lKM/bejne.html
dude this doesn't share any technology with the japanese ifv, don't be that guy that compares shit just because they're both asian.
I like the price. IFV for 3 million is a good deal.
Unfortunately this tank and Hanwua Heavy Industry didn't won the contract against General Dynamic and Elbit System. They offer Philippines this tank with a 105mm Otomalara turret on a K-21 IFV. Maybe next time if Philippines want a IFV in the mix. Are you gonna do review on ASCOD 2 42tons Medium Main battle Tank or the Philippine Sabrah ASCOD 2 35Tons Light tank?
A 40mm! Why, back in my day, our 113's got a single Ma Deuce and you had to hang your ass out into the wind to fire it! Looks like a very capable vehicle, and South Korea is becoming very well equipped indeed.
... Yes Edith ... Those were the days 😉 ...
R.A Williams welcome home Brother.
I served in the 25th Panzer division of the sinkapore Wehrmacht as a M113A2 driver which had a 25mm Bushmaster OWS. The M113 was easy to operate and service. The domestically produced Bionix IFV is a bitch to work in.
Even has a light tank varient with a 105.
K-21 has APFSDS-T Shell which penatrates about 160-200mm. Also Raybolt ATGM will integrated too
South Korean DOD restricted K-21’s specifications to be less than 25tons and capable of amphibious assault. This is due to the nature of Korean geology. Having said that I’d say K-21 came out to be a well armed (40mm Cannon is a no joke), and armored with great utility. I have joined a joint training exercise with 2nd corps mech div guys with one of these during my years of service in ROKA 12th mountain division. And the first time I saw K-21s, I was shocked that these things can float.
Any idea how those pontoons are protected? Personally I'd be worried about a stray bullet puncturing one during a river crossing and end up getting capsized
Tube itself is almost submerged under waterline, making it a hard target to hit, not to mention the top part is protected by the actual side armor skirt of the vehicle. And even if the tube does get punctured, the tube is actually separated into multiple smaller tubes, a few damaged tubes won’t sink the vehicle.
Cheers, thought it might be something like that but wanted to be sure
During K-21’s prototype testing, there was a terrible accident of the vehicle drowning. This was caused by the overall lightness of the vehicle, having a full load in its passanger compartment (full squad) made the vehicle rear-heavy unballanced, thus sinking the vehicle. To solve this compartmentalization of the tube was done. So when crossing a river with a full load, K-21 will only inflate its front and middle tubes. Later this led to better survivability when punctured too.
Pontoons gave me a thought actually, have no idea if it would work. if you had a sliding perforated plate that slid down when the pontoon deployed would it be effective at giving you a stand-off effect vs missile/rpgs?
There is no other IFV today that has this level of protection, firepower, speed, troop capacity and amphibious capability, yet weighs only 25 tons. If I understand it correctly, the vehicle has a largely fiberglass frame with lightweight composite armor attached, which is how all that was packed into such a light vehicle. Add to that its sophisticated fire control, battlefield management and networked communications systems and you have the most advanced IFV in the world today.
Seeing the bottom hull, it seem does not have v hull to resist mine and IED.
CV90 is watching you..
CV90 MKIV ☺️
Thanks for taking my mind off of all the chaos in our world right now. I love your videos, thanks for not have a robot voice and thanks for all the time you put into your channel.
Anytime man! :-)
Matsimus I agree you make quality videos matsimus and an amazing fellow Canadian 🇨🇦🇨🇦😁😁
K-21 ability to transport infantry is manualy said to be capable of transporting 9 fully armed mechanized infantry, but in reality, it is expected to only transport maximum 8 fully armed mechanized infantry. Because if one or two of the squadrons is armed with a PanzerFaust-level anti-tank weapon, there's not enough space in the vehicle. The KIFV ability to water drive was originally initiated in 1989 by a project of armored vehicles equipped with heavy fire weapon system. South Korea introduced T-80U and BMP-3 in 1995 as a bear project with Russia, and received many hints in BMP-3 water driving ability. As a hint obtained here, the Ministry of National Defense and Agency for Koera Defense Development (KDD) made it a task to give limited water driving capability to a 30t test model and a 25t test model, but failed to use the BMP-3 water jet system for K-21 as well as to use a propeller, but also failed to obtain sufficient water driving capability. Eventually, the prototype was born with a very limited water-driving capability using orbits, just like conventional armored vehicles. It only recorded a speed of 7.8 km/h. Eventually, the current K-21 flotation system with BMP-3 wave-blocking devices is completed. South Korea has developed this system to across small river during military operations, so there is no problem in achieving the military's strategic goals, but it still has a much slower water driving capability than BMP-3. The 40mm main gun is not a BOFORS. This is the call 'Nobong' Korean 40mm gun that licensed 40mm of BOFORS in Korea. Yes, the basic structure is the same as BOFORS, but in many parts it is different. ex) BOFORS twin, Nobong is single. The 40mm main gun is powerful, but it is very difficult to deal with a 2nd generation tank. this 40mm APFSDS shell can defeat all existing armored combat vehicles but 'except tanks'. However, the 40mm K237 APFSDS has 170mm penetration at 500m, 150mm at 1km, and 130mm at 1.5km. So, it's very difficult to deal with Norrth Korean tanks based on the T-62 Line. Of course, T-34, SU-85, SU-100, and T-55 line K-21 can be destroy, but not against 2nd generation tanks like T-62. If 40mm of APFSDS in 300 shots per minute, K-21 could be destroy an orbit or an external control device. that's why K-21 has ATGM system. ATGM system can be destroy all 2nd generation tanks. So a good commander wouldn't order to deal the tanks only with K-21. The main goal of K-21 is to carry heavily armed mechanized infantry, operate with MBT, and destroy infantry carriers, light armored carriers, etc. Yes, if K-21 have a chance, they can attack to transport helicopter, sometime use ATGM can be hunt MBT Thank you for interest in IFV in Korea. K-21 is an IFV with many advantages, but not a tank. It's not even a light tank. It's just an IFV with enhanced firepower. K-21 has the same limits as other IFV. Please keep an eye on how KIFVs will develop based on K-21 in the future. thank you.
You forgot to mention its "Light tank" variant with 105mm gun Its veing marketed to ASEAN countries that has a light tank requirement such as the philippines Its concept is the same with the harimau or the CV90-120/PL01 tanks Anyways nice vid about the K21 its not really a popular vehicle thats why im happy to see a vid about it
He does mention it in the description above
Matsimus, you are a bit outdated, the new K-21 is the redback. Australia is looking to get them. here's the info. www.hanwha-defense.co.kr/eng/products/antiaircraft-artillery-as21.do
k21 not worse than you think
What this idiot's talking about
@@superk9142 I guess you're too much of an idiot to understand
The armor protection level was very carefully chosen to negate most threats while maintaining excellent mobility in mountainous terrain.
K-21's armor was tested by BMP-3 30mm auto canon!
With someone like north Korea and China at your doorstep you got to make good equipment
N-Korea is a Chinese buffer state..
Not from China. ROK ambition of becoming major weapons exporter.
@@peekaboopeekaboo1165 well we need a LOT of equipment, best way to offset cost of weapons development is to sell them. even when we achieve reunifiction, we border japan, china, russia, and at the edge of US influence. we are a g20 country..... thats surrounded by 4 g7 countries. like seriously if we were anywhere else on the globe we'd be reigional power....
Lesson learned from the 1950.
@@thebravegallade731 China (PROC) is not the threat to ROK.
Nice vid and a great IFV. S. Korea is one of the world’s most technologically sophisticated nations (along with Japan) so it stands to reason their gear will advanced too. Plus they have the need, and necessity is the mother of invention. They are still technically at war with N. Korea after all.
I'm super excited to see you do the K-21, it's been one of my favorites for a while. The debate between armor and mobility will probably rage on forever, but if you're going to go the mobility route, the K-21 probably does it perfectly. The question I have is whether the chassis can support thicker side and belly armor in some relatively easy to install kit, so the amphibious capability can be traded for more armor if the mission dictates. If it can, and if such a kit was developed, I think it would be easy to describe the K-21 as generally the best IFV in the world.
Thank You, all your videos are appreciated, now days more than ever. Thank you again for all the work/effort that goes into each minute of these uploads of yours.
Great video as always. I always liked how they used a 40 mm rather than the more common 25-30 mm cannons other nations use. Btw, could you do a video on the Japanese Type 89 IFV and a one (or series) on how different countries name their vehicles?
hey Matt, love your vids. I'm in self isolation after showing symptoms, This vid was a great start to my day, tanks!
Many thanx 4 the vid & the kind thoughts. U're work & efforts deeply appreciated. Same 2 U & U're family, be safe 😉👍👍
Great video. South Korea are excellent at AFV production, and really great at virus reduction, so far. Stay safe.
Keep the videos coming. Much appreciated. Thank you.
very nice to see more korean military vehicles on your channel! makes me proud
I really hope my country Australia picks this lovely vehicle
This is not the vehicle the South Koreans are offering the Australian Army for Land 400 Phase 3. They are offering the Redback AS21 - which is the vehicle the South Korean Army will be moving towards as well, it is an entirely new vehicle. It is almost twice as heavy 42-45t vs the K21's 26t, is not amphibious and is far more heavily armoured. Here is the Hanwha Defence website for the new vehicle: www.hanwha-defense.co.kr/eng/products/antiaircraft-artillery-as21.do
YES finally the k21 getting some love too!
That is a very impressive tank. Leave to the Korean to legally obtain Russian equipment as payment for debt. Beautiful Lol. Thanks Matsimus loved the video. PS Thanks Matsimus watch your six.
The tales say that the Russians took home containers of cup noodles on the same ship that brought in tanks and helicopters.
In the 90's russia had no money. So they paid off soviet era debts with equipment. For example finland received a battery of 9K37m1 buk-m1 air defense missile systems, a particle accelerator for the lappeenranta university of technology and mobile geophysical reflection seismology survey equipment for the finnish geodetic institute.
Thank you Mat.. for sharing all this video with us.. Covid 19 locked us down.... Regards from Msia
join the club, Showing symptoms?
Thanks for great video!
Awesome videos as always. Thank you keep them coming
Another high-quality video by the man, the legend, MATSIMUS!! I am really impressed with South Korean tanks and IFV's. The armour can in extremis most likely be upgraded with modular armour ( My assumption )
This is one of the best videos you have made. Thanks for the good thoughts. This is an awesome IFV and like the new music at the end it's less dramatic. Finally hope you can compare this to a Bradley and kynx and warrior, seems this is better for mountainous terrain.
Thanks Matsimus for very enjoyable, informative and really well put together videos. I'm a hobbiest and build models of the vehicles and its awesome watching the real deal driving and fighting and strutting their stuff. Thanks for the well wishes as well
That 40mm type bofor gun is going to be a nightmare for NK infantry.
Really cool vehicle, could use some reactive armour on the sides as long as it doesn't harm its floating ability tho.
Thanks Matsimus, interesting piece of kit, the AS-21 Redback proposed to the Australian Army is an interesting piece of kit, not a lot of info out there but a big step up in capability and protection, standard K-21 at 25-28t depending on variant, the AS-21 Redback reported to be coming in at 42t, big change, will be watching what come with that competition against the Lynx KF41
IFV gunboat @ 03:12. 40mm great move! Innovative flotation device! Thx!
Another great view. I really appreciate these.
More uploads like this please. Especially Canadian armor. Thanks
All the best to you as well. I love your work. It reminds me of the old days of Discovery and The History Channel.
Thank you for the video and good luck to you and your loved ones.
It's the infantry fighting vehicle that turns into a river monitor.
great video and even greater advice concerning the craziness going on right now .
Really enjoy your videos Can you make one about the Begleitpanzer 57?
Keep up the great videos matt.
Light tanks with 105mm are making a come back and is being marketed in the south east asian region the Harimau medium tank, ASCOD 2 105mm mmbt, K21 105mm, and otokar tulpar 105mm
I Like this Korean IFV!!! Have too Technology advance! Thx for video Mat! Cheers.
to me the most impressive thing is: a bunch of modern IFVs have all those capabilities. NONE OF THEM are amphibious (kinda left behind on NATO tracked IFVs) or this light. the pontoon thing is also pretty smart. imho the best platform out there. still to be proven in the battlefield tho
Thanks for the vid sir, nice bit of kit.👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers from KOREA. You always deliever TOP content
This system is very Russian in it's operational concept the prioritization of mobility and firepower at the expense of armor plus the amphibious ability. On the other hand it has a very Western weapons fit 30-40 mm auto Cannon +dual atgm luncher. An interesting Korean adaptetion
Matt, love ❤️ how you keep this information coming . 1, glad to put a face with the voice, hopefully that was you in a warrior. 2, why hasn’t anyone made an IFV wider with sloped armor, lessons learned in WWII
Matsimus , can you do a video about the relationship between K200 KIFV you mentioned and the Turkey FNSS ACV-15, please? They look almost the same. Let me wonder if there is any relation between them.
I hope u arent positive u are just a genuinely awesome and nice guy
Bravo Zulu. Mad respect for ROK military and KCIA hard as woodpecker lips.
Nice vid as always Mat. As for which IFV is the best, I really don't know. However I think that the K-21 is indeed the best IFV for the Koreans, because it was built to be just that.
Damn was waiting for new armour video......excellent one my favourite one......
IFV gunboat @ 03:12. 40mm great move! Thx!
Thank you Mat, very cool
any news on the australian program??? The Hanwa was in the shortlist!
Good stuff Matsimus, btw any love for Singaporean IFVs soon?
Congratulations i saw one of your videos on RTE website the other day
5:10 1,380m/s velocity? Is that a typo from the script? If not that’s absolutely insane.
역시 맛시무스
I can see a striking resemblance to the K-21 IFV to the British Warrior IFV or the CV-90 Series.
There are only so many ways to armor things effectively (especially composites, which will be more widespread thanks to composite metal foams), so having vehicles that are basically a box is going to be common.
Great vid Matt.
Can't wait for the M48 Patton MBT video and UH-1 video.
Great looking vehicle and I would not want to be on the wrong end of it.
Wow Matt a video about armoured vehicles .. back to know what you know best fella 😉
Yes finaly a vid. nice go one
Nothing like a good vid to distract from the mass panic
Is the gun L70 bofors 40 mm but an upgraded one? Same caliber and specs right?
Thanks mate, I'm going crazy here! I've had to talk to my family! I don't know who is more shocked me or them, and please stay with aluminium!
I LOVE THE 40MM BOFORS!!!😀😀😀😀😀
The move towards heavier scout vehicles is probably more accurate to say they are moving towards a "forward skirmish forces"
great video! btw, can we have the top 7 best Russian anti-ship missiles, plz?
hey Matt thanks for the best wishes, you and your family take care as well, maybe you could do a video on the AS21 Redback a vehicle based on the K21 bu upgraded and up against the Lynx41 for the next Gen IFV for the Australian army, its turret is designed and made in Australia. and as with the Boxer Recon Vehicle a production and maintenance line is to set up in Australia.
You could put the games you use in these videos to description under the links for example. Or you could make a video about games you play coz I don't recognise all of them and would love to try some of em.
If. Remember correctly the War Museum in Seoul has a museum piece K-21and K-2 Black Panther. Very nice. I would like to see more info on the K-2.
While you are at it, do one on the KURGANETS-25 ( ARMATA APC/IFV )
I like your comments about the Corona virus: It is something to be taken serious - for a lot of reasons not directly involving the disease. But let's keep things in proportion.
The K-21 is amazing low price as well ;)
*You* are fed up? I stock a grocery store! We are busier than Christmas, and the warehouses are running out of material.
I work retail. I feel you. I love the question, do you have anymore in the back?
Mad respect for people working at grocery stores they deserve more appreciation o7
Keller 13 No. We stack leftover paper on sky shelves, so it is all on the sales floor, no back stock. To make it worse, it actually looks like the warehouse is out of material. I originally posted before work, and today we only received 2 boxes of bath tissue. Those were gone 5 minutes after I stocked them. And we have completely an entirely empty bath tissue section now.
There is also the variant offered to Australia. 40plus tons
That's FuXXXXX Scary K21, K2 Black Panther.
Just about the right video to watch while Metro Manila is now initializing its lockdown.
3:12 GET OUT OF MY SWAMP!!!!
Another video to watch while I work. Thanks Mat!
Yes. I would also feel safe if i had T'challa along side me.
Good vid Mat
Hey Matsimus, this is unpopular but could you make a video on Hunter AFV used by Singapore Army?
Playing Wargame: Red Dragon again Matt?
Jeesh Matt you're up late EST
Mat can't resist the low key bash of "Corona virus Crazy".
Looks gorgeous: just want to answer (somewhat) your concerns about having so many subscribers but you are not getting much feedback from such. Likely as myself, they are snatching a 15 minute distraction as they eat their lunch, at their desk, but IT does not allow them to access YT etc. And fair enough? Love your work and hope we can soon be be witnessing you in your own Vehicle. Thinking that the coming months will provide opportunities for good buys.
Thanks for another GREAT video! Praying that you and yours stay safe, healthy and have all the toilet paper you need to fend off the virus!
Will you do a video about Romanias TR85?
Matt keep safe and make sure you keep a sharp eye on your toilet paper!😂😁
Did they sell any to Taiwan? Pretty hilly there too.
Compare to others IFV, who's the best one?
IIRC, there is a 105mm upgrade package for this thing
Is the k21 equipped with anti tank missile's?Like the lynx and as 21 redback.
Yes
SUBSCRIBED
Was the musics in the beginning of the video from an anime?
i feel ya bro but just keep your normal intro it works for you
