If the OP hadn't seen season 1 then it makes sense. but if you had seen season 1 then you knew his name, his powers, his title, what side he was on, his ranking, and what he did. That's a lot to know about him as a character. I might not know the entire life story of my coworker, but I don't ask myself "who is this person?" every time I see them, bc I at least know enough about them to know who they are, haha.

Personally, I only need to relate to a character once, on a fundamental level to grow attached. In this case, his love for his dying mother and wanting to make her proud, and his absolute childish happiness at seeing her spirit before passing himself. I, as an individual, relate heavily to that sort of character, and therefore I am capable of mourning his tragedy. Point is, everyone is different. Not just in relating to fictional characters, but also when it comes to taking in a fictional story. Some people need longer, others don't need any time at all. That's just the way humans work.

  • One thing that demon slayer excels at is keeping an established power balance. So many Shonen anime introduce an MC that starts weak, but wins every battle, surpasses all other characters, and eventually is proved to be the best of them all. Particularly frustrating is when a new side character gets introduced as “the strongest”, and then easily gets overtaken by the protagonist to force some sort of tangible “growth” that is entirely unearned. Demon slayer is fantastic at giving Tanjiro his moments, but it never lets you forget that he’s a kid. The Hashira are introduced as the strongest and the best that the demon slayer corps have, and that distinction is clear right up to the very end. Tanjiro’s perceived victory over Rui, and then Giyuu’s subsequent rescue is exactly that. And then here with Tanjiros victory followed by Rengoku’s protection of him and all the other passengers. Tanjiro still grows and learns new skills, his fights are emotional and hype as hell, but the Hashira are the ones that almost always do the heavy lifting. And really that’s how it should be. *EDIT* SPOILER WARNING : SOMEONE IN THE REPLIES TO THIS COMMENT DROPPED A PRETTY HUGE SPOILER. So you know. Don't proceed unless you've already read Demon slayer or you don't care about spoilers.

    • Love this 💯 I was just talking about how I love the way Tanjiro’s strength is written. It’s clear that his training wasn’t a waste of time like a lot of shonen characters. Its established that he’s very strong, smart, and determined but it isn’t blown out of proportion because he’s the MC. He truly is talented and strong but not to a ridiculous degree. There’s room for real growth and not just introducing a “rival” to make him better. Can’t wait for the rest of the show

    • What, you mean you don’t want to see an obnoxious child ninja who can barely throw a punch become a god who can create a thousand clones, destroy a planet and create nukes with his bare hands? But whyyyyy?! Goku was a monkey boy who punched real good and now he’s…. I honestly don’t even know anymore… lmao I gave up ages ago. Power scaling is so absurd. I think MHA does a pretty great job because there are always real consequences and they’re at a literal school learning to get stronger. We see powerful heroes and we never really surpass that level established, and the story is only happening because the strongest guy around… isn’t… anymore. We get a taste of how powerful super hero’s can really be, but start from the bottom and work our way up slowly. It isn’t perfect and has some cliche moments, but it has some of the best power scaling out there IMO.

  • I was lucky enough to see this in the theater and let me tell you, it was absolutely breathtaking on a big screen. I'm not even super huge on Demon Slayer, I like it fine, but like the show the movie is just so good at cutting to the core of blood-pumping shonen action. The final battle especially had me on the edge of my seat and I was kind of sad when it finally ended. On that note, the fact that this was rated R is kind of hilarious to me since it really is no more intense than, like Geoff said, a standard blockbuster or even the show itself. In line to pick up my ticket the lady specifically pointed out "Mortal Kombat to the left and Demon Slayer to the right" and I just couldn't help but think how odd that sentence really was.

    • It's rated R because the MPAA hates, and I mean dispises, dismemberment. They let it fly if you can't see the cut or its mostly hidden (like how End Game handled it), but you can't really do that with this film, especially in the final fight. I agree it shouldn't be rated R. It's not particularly gruesome or gross as some rated R films when it comes to blood and guts. But the MPAA will continue to be the MPAA as long as Karens exist.

They tend to do a better job of showing off emotions and thus are considered as better acted. The one thing that Demon Slayer definitely does well are its action sequences. Unfortunately, there isn't a category for that last I checked.

    • "People are pretty stupid for thinking this series is carried solely on animation." If you _actually_ paid attention to people's criticisms, you would know that "carried by animation" does not mean "the story is shit." Most people who criticize it acknowledge its value... which is why people say that it is carried. The story isn't bad per se, but it isn't ground-breaking or amazing. Even in this review, he said that the movie would be a "B movie" were it not for its high production values. Though the fact you see Rengoku losing and Tanjiro not being the hero as unique means that you really don't read enough light novels or manga. To you, it is unique. To people who consume this type of medium frequently, it is yet another moment (though that's not to say that it wasn't cool as hell).

Thinking about COVID as I watched Tanjiro plead with Rengoku at the end of his heroic life is what brought me to tears at the end; that despite everything we’ve all lost, we must move forward as best we can, if only to honor the path we’ve taken. You'll note that throughout the series, the strongest characters, or at least the ones with the most potential, are like that because they've experienced traumas and suffering that ended up pushing them forward. And it's true for both demon slayers and demons. You're not expected to cry a river everytime a character has a tragic backstory, you're just being shown it because so many of the characters are driven to push themselves beyond their limits constantly, and watching that struggle would be far less engaging and meaningful without knowing about the experiences that motivate the character. It helps you to understand why the characters continue to push themselves to perform such otherworldly feats. Someone who hasn't gone through so much can't be expected to fight nearly as hard, or have nearly as much drive to succeed. These are larger-than-life characters, and they became that way because they had powerful past experiences and/or traumas that shaped them. It's just a fact of their world, and it's important to the themes of the series that it be shown and understood.

    • My own feeling was that Akaza was fighting seriously... But limiting himself just to the level slightly above Rengoku, to test him in a way, and to further drive home his point about "human weakness" and convince him to take his offer of demonhood. It was likely still a serious and challenging fight for Akaza and not one he could take lightly, but not quite "to and past his limits" challenging, if you know what I mean. Only at the very end he was truly fighting for his life, and would propably die to the sun if he was held back just a few seconds (or would actually get decapitated by Rengoku. Hell, for a second I thought Tanjiro or Inosuke will slam into the blade and help drive Rengoku's sword all the way through Akaza's neck).

  • Loved the review! Hearing your thoughts is always great. I personally thought the movie was really deep and the best moment in the story so far (when it comes to the anime). The thesis to me was that the struggle of the demon slayers is a COMPLETELY unfair one. Their battle against the demons is almost downright impossible. They have human bodies that decay and no magic abilities, so they're always at a disadvantage. This is something that would lead many to despair and give up, but the demon slayers go on. It's a really powerful message that I've never seen explored this deeply in any shonen anime. Sure, many deal with overpowered villains but this is not discussed much since the power of the villains only comes to create hype or to add stakes. The movie actually deals with the psychological and philosophical implications of this fact. The most powerful demons live for hundreds of years. They don't even change, whereas we get a literal graveyard full of demon slayers in the opening. The whole film explores this idea, with Rengoku's backstory specifically focusing on how his dad reached ultimate power only to become disillusioned and discouraged, even to the point of dismissing the importance of hashiras and the demon slayer corps. (Spoilers) But the ultimate example of this is the end fight. As you've said before, in Demon Slayer, the ideas are expressed through the action and here we see Rengoku, the pinacle of human strenght, been pretty much useless in front of a high ranking demon. Sure, he's strong, but his energy is not infinite, his wounds take long to heal. in the end, he's only kind of able to turn the tables because the freaking sun comes up. The human condition is unbearable, but the fight must continue. It's all said in Tanjiro's speech at the end. Even when the fight is unfair and full of pain, we keep fighting. Of course that's something that applies to real life as well and I think that the brutality and honesty the movies uses to express that message is what makes it an espectacular work of art.

  • Demon Slayer continually surprises me by playing with traditional shounen tropes and just making something very new recognizable but undeniably fresh from them. I mean, in the very first season we learn that there are 12 Demon Moons, we watch our young hero get his ass beat and settle in to watch him climb the power scale, killing the demon moons one by one. And then Muzan annihilates the lower six in about 2 minutes, cutting our time frame down dramatically and drastically the raising the stakes for the training arc the heroes are going through at the time because if Lower Five almost killed Tanjiro how are they supposed to face off with Upper One? Or how the core character trait of Tanjiro's is his empathy, a tried and true virtue of protags everywhere. Unlike his contemporaries, Tanjiro recognizes the need to kill demons and so his empathy materializes in a unique way of trying to euthanize demons as quickly and mercifully as he can. This movie definitely has my favorite one these though, Rengoku has immense Older Brother Mentor Vibes and withing minutes of talking to him you can already imagine how his teachings could help the main gang, possibly even developing and exploring the full potential of the Hinokami Kagura. That obviously won't happen now and the realization hits at just the right moment to give you an excuse to leave the room during the credits

  • I went to watch this movie with 3 friends. Only one of us never watched Season 1 so she didn't get the full impact of emotions. She saw us cried during the scenes of Tanjiro's dream. She didn't fully understand the extent of how family is important to Tanjiro and how that dream is such a cruel act towards Tanjiro. It was really funny how all three of us tried to explain to her why we felt so emotional during those scenes. Yeah, it's better that people watched Season 1 before watching the movie.

    • Yeah, that's what... most of four cours and another movie away? So, maybe someone will remember to remind him to eat his words in two to four years when we're at the end of the castle arc and about to fight for the dawn but I'm not holding my breath on that.

  • I'd bet money on the reason for the R-rating is entirely due to the self-harm scenes, tasteful and more alluded to than shown as they were.

    @petermann673@petermann6732 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, I always assumed the R rating came from all the continuous suicide, which is understandable lol

    • A combination of continuous suicide, minor gore and constant body horror with a f**kload of fleshy tentacles, eyes and other crap straight out of Lovecraft/Warhammer chaos spawns. At least that's my theory.

  • I’m surprised at the reviews, I really didn’t think we got enough of Flame Daddy to really emotionally invest in him. I was upset but half because he felt like a plot point and not a real character, and considering how unconnected he was to the trio even at the end, I just couldn’t get behind the feelings the movie was trying to push.

  • No. The dream starts when Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke go all "Big Brother!" and the animation gets weird. The demons Kyojuro fought at the start were real, you even see the first one at the end of ep 25 I believe? Enmu killed people and slayers on days before Kyojuro and the trio got there, that's why Kyojuro and them were sent there, because people kept dying. Enmu says the spell on the tickets takes time to be effective

  • I really prefer the movie format of big, important fights. It sucks to have to wait a week between episodes in the middle of a fight. Having the whole fight in one, singular film is just so much more immersive and fulfilling. Also, this way the fight can be better quality and much less rushed.

    @tylervue306@tylervue3062 жыл бұрын
    • So you want nothing but fights? You have to build characters. Having nothing but fights doesn't make it a good show. You can get away with that in a movie that's based on an arc where your three main characters is already established. You can't do that with a show or it will suck.
