I left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
To all my subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

  • I think you need to build a number of important structures over the summer/Autumn : 1. Gym 2. Storage shed (Tools & building materials) 3. Wood Shed (You need to be prepared for next winter) 4. Sauna 5. Decking off the side of the cabin (somewhere to eat and barbecue) 6. Clear a driveway & put down gravel

  • Steel roofer here I would suggest you pre drill your sheets. You can then fasten them from the side without walking on the steel. I would also add one screw in between the ribs on centre ( bottom row only) and get the bottom foam that seals of the sheet to the flashing to prevent critters intrusion. I would also get foam tape to seal your end cap to the sheets. All and all, a pretty good job!

We ended up having to sell it a few years ago. Hunting, fishing, and just being outdoors. It grew my love for the outdoors and gardening and just being in nature. I'm sure theres plenty of women that feel like that too. I wish you the best of luck! Also, the cabin is coming along amazingly! Love that matte black to be honest. It just looks so good. • If you’re going to do a forest gym, if you can swing it, HIGHLY recommend as many sliding glass doors as you can. Open them (with screen doors if needed) in the summer and get some fresh air in, close them in the winter to keep out the cold (fireplace if needed), but being able to see the surrounding nature while getting your workouts in would be amazing!

If you already have one, I must've missed it! It will be a great investment, as you will be building and crafting up until you reach the gates of Valhalla! The barefoot shoes were a great choice, also works since you can completely control what kind of debris your construction site has lying around. Greetings from Finland - can't wait for the sauna project.

  • Will you be doing a kitchen garden eventually? Autumn is probably the best time to start it, as you can use the fallen leaves as organic matter to fill the raised beds. Morgan Donner has a video of her turning her garden into a historical-style kitchen garden, so that's worth a watch before embarking on it yourself. A kitchen garden they can plant anything they like in is also very tempting for the ladies... add a wood fired bread oven and a chicken coop and you'll be overrun with as many neurodivergent nerd chicks in historical dress as will fit in a cabin.

  • Another great episode. Glad you are getting that truck next week. Have you figured out how you will cut your metal panels and trim? I recently covered my friend's 50 year old cabin with metal panels (roof & walls). I used a pair of aviation snips (left & right or green & red). But for cutting the panels I invested in a Milwaukee M12 nibbler. Check it out for yourself. This tool is like magic. It even collects the tiny metal cut-outs in a bag that you empty instead of dropping them on the ground where they can stick to your boots and later scratch your new matte black roof. I basically did the whole house with this small cordless machine on only a couple charges with the M12 battery.

You need a lot of trees for future projects and a crap load for all the milled wood you will need. Set aside two or three days and recruit a couple of family and friends. Again watch The Outsider. Go to his early videos. You will love his channel.

  • Great job with the strapping. It’s important to have the horizontal strapping above the vertical strapping to drain any water that gets in. You got it exactly right. The alternative method with one level of strapping instead of two is to set it at a 45 degree diagonal, so that the metal can attach and water can drain.

  • James really love this episode. Everything is looking absolutely amazing. I think it’s time to build a fire pit and have some cool fires outside with all your scrap wood. Thank you again for my Saturday coffee wild Homestead.

  • Roof looks fabulous. Lucky it wasn’t a super sunny or hot day otherwise you would have been roasting and sunburnt being up on the roof all day. Good work champ.

  • The next thing you should build on your own land is a propper outhouse. No more shitting in the snow/rain or in fear of bear attacks in your sturdy outhouse.

  • Your series has totally captured my disabled husband's attention. He has a question: do you have a plow for that quad?

  • Nice work, enjoying the series! As a general suggestion, think ahead about any project you are doing and try to do whatever you can on the ground horses once you’re up on the roof. It’s too late now, but for example, the vertical strapping boards could have had screws started in them on the ground so that once you get on the ladder, you just place the board and reach and screw the screws in that are already started. Saves you fumbling around in your pouch for a screw and starting it when you’re on an uncomfortable ladder. Same thing for facia boards or rake trim or just about anything that’s up high. If you spend a minute with a tape measure and do some layout, you could make your life a lot easier.still great work for someone who never done it! Keep them coming

  • So, James, not for nothing but I’m fascinated with your work and your passion for the task and your program concept. What distinguishes you from other off griders is your personality. Matchmaking you with “a magnificent wife” is going to be a trip. The whole “me Tarzan, you Jane” thing will add an entirely different dimension to your life that portends a really fun aspect to the story. I know you have firsthand experience with at least one selection shtick similar to “the Bachelor “. Your woman better have some major chops to be able to keep pace with your juice.

  • Full size truck hands down that way you can tow and carry any materials you need in the future and your Irish wolfhound will need a place in that truck. I would also suggest a crew cab so you can fit a few of your 10 kids in the back seat when necessary. lmfaoo ... The back seat gives you a place to put tools and gear in inclement weather as well as a place to sleep if your traveling or camping in inclement weather.

  • Wow! Looks great!! Can't believe you were able to complete this all by yourself. Yikes!! Not for the feint of heart. Can't wait for the entire roof to be complete (as I'm sure you would agree) and you can get the flooring, windows and doors complete so you do not need to sleep in the tent anymore!! Wow! Amazing!! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next episode!!
