I left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
To all my subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲
JAMES ALOFS
Waking up at 6am for work? No thanks. Waking up at 6am on Saturday for Wild Homestead? Yes please
Have you ever had banana bread at work? Hell yeah!
@@MattTZew BUT BANANA BREAD AT WORK DUDE!
LMAO😂😂😂😂
@@MattTZew skunks? HELL NO!
@@growguide3756 hell no
My wife said "its either me or the BERRIES AND CHERRIES." She was a good woman and I will miss her dearly! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Berries and Cherries forever 😂😂😂
How refreshing it is!!! I'm just going to go back and get my own place now I am sharing with my colleagues I have alot of stress too work!! Love this video 😊
James is looking Armish this week.
That was the first thing I thought 😂😂 I had to check I got the right video. And then was going to comment The same thing lol
His new CosPlay persona 😂
I thought he had a guest come in to help again at first 🤣
@@davidx593Saved me a bunch of typing too!
@@johnsadler8637 true. Lol. Funny thing was he changed clothes but towards the end he was back wearing the Amish look again. 😂😂
You know I really appreciate that you’ve taken us on this journey. You show us your failures along with your successes. I don’t think many people would be willing to show their failures. I’m truly enjoying your build
I think you need to build a number of important structures over the summer/Autumn : 1. Gym 2. Storage shed (Tools & building materials) 3. Wood Shed (You need to be prepared for next winter) 4. Sauna 5. Decking off the side of the cabin (somewhere to eat and barbecue) 6. Clear a driveway & put down gravel
Good list. May I add? Fire pit with benches. The tool shed seems vital.
Move the driveway to the top of the list😃
It's funny, I'd swap the gym out for a basketball court 😂
driveway sooner than later, and he can bring his truck right up to the clearing, that would improve productivity a lot
Don't forget his house as his current build is a guest cottage, lol.
Steel roofer here I would suggest you pre drill your sheets. You can then fasten them from the side without walking on the steel. I would also add one screw in between the ribs on centre ( bottom row only) and get the bottom foam that seals of the sheet to the flashing to prevent critters intrusion. I would also get foam tape to seal your end cap to the sheets. All and all, a pretty good job!
This is the way
Yes, no self ventilating roofs 😂
Walk on it come on 😂
Are you up all night to drop these at 5:30 in the morning?? Well if so; much appreciated! It’s become our Saturday morning ritual. Not sure if you’re that good, or we’re that bored?😂 It’s gotta be you’re that entertaining; we’re pretty busy.
Automated release
You can upload ahead of time and schedule when you’d like the video to go public
Mine too here in Arkansas in America ❤watching right now
Probably automated
I’m also sure we’re a week behind seeing his progress
6 am crowd, *WE MEET AGAIN* *OOGA BOOGA*
12 am here in Germany! Just perfect timing!
Lol. google offered me a translation of "OOGA BOOGA", and it was "Get a wound" :D:D
The matt black roofing was definitely the right choice! Watching the roof build has been exhilarating, now that you're working with metal sheeting please be extra careful. There's a lot of ladies who would love to live the homestead life with a hard working man, hopefully your future wife will like the fact that you come with a ton of Aussie and Kiwi subscribers who love spending their Saturday nights with you ❤❤
Maybe he should start with the puppy first and then take the next step up in relationships.

I think you'll find a wonderful wife. A woman would be blessed to be with you. I know when I was younger, we had a off grid cabin we went to every weekend and I truly miss it. We ended up having to sell it a few years ago. Hunting, fishing, and just being outdoors. It grew my love for the outdoors and gardening and just being in nature. I'm sure theres plenty of women that feel like that too. I wish you the best of luck! Also, the cabin is coming along amazingly! Love that matte black to be honest. It just looks so good. Oh, btw, dont rush trying to find a wife, the right one will come along when its meant to happen. 😊❤
You could already sleep in the cabin loft!!! I totally would!
I’ll never get tired of the berries and cherries jokes they always catch me off guard
My spouse gave me an ultimatum when I bought a washing machine capable of running off solar power. Not quite as petty as berries and cherries but still. I can relate.
Finally!! Saturday morning with Wild Homestead 😊 James you probably already thought of it but I figured I'll mention it just in case: that nice river of yours could totally power up a 50-100KW hydro turbine to power up your entire compound! There are some cool products that don't require a rocket scientist to set up 😊 Can't wait to see what you do for your off grid power... That's going to be a project in itself 🎉
As a viewer, I feel connected to that little oak tree! I’ll be here for the long-haul :)
Dude...I am sitting in my backyard, made this saturday evening event my guytime of the week...started a fire in my firepit, had my third IPA, just found out I will be a second time daddy...thanks for your story man...just inspiering!
GOOD SIR DIETER, WHAT AN AMAZING DAY FOR YOU INDEED! THE GODS HAVE BLESSED YOU WITH A WONDERFUL SECOND CHILD! REJOICE! IT IS A GREAT DAY TO BE DIETER 🫡🤝⚡️🌲🐺
@@wildhomestead much appreciated! Crossing fingers for your truck purchase and your first night in the cabin! Will be rewarding!!
I make me a cup coffee I watch you build Your cabin ,I never turn up the volume don’t want to wake anyone your doing what a lot people wish they could do including me .
Lol! There's levels to working out!! I have the best friend ever!!
The 3.5 inch overhang on your sheets will be perfect for your rain gutter, and I'm sure it will be a critical part for a water collection system you're planning.
Why does he need water collection?
@@memyself-lh4xl drinking, bathing, watering garden, cleaning the wolfhound. Having a system pumping water up from the stream will be expensive.
Campsite buddy ---- Oskar the grouse . 💁♂️

Oscar, the fried grouse sandwich
Leave Oskar…go find a grouse on another part of your land! 😢
👍
Loving the matte black roof Sir James! But before the gym build maybe a glorious outhouse will help attract your glorious wife! Just a thought! My glorious wife and I are really enjoying your series!
If you’re going to do a forest gym, if you can swing it, HIGHLY recommend as many sliding glass doors as you can. Open them (with screen doors if needed) in the summer and get some fresh air in, close them in the winter to keep out the cold (fireplace if needed), but being able to see the surrounding nature while getting your workouts in would be amazing!
Ready for what have become the Saturday rutine, an episode of Wild Homestead, lets go!
You know, if somebody doesn't know what you're doing. You're doing a wonderful job pal It's looking really good good job
Portugal, here. The new episodes show up at lunch time 😂 Nice job, by the way.
at 18:30 you ask about the other frog calling. American Toads !
Straya here. Home of the tin roof. Best way is to pin the top left of the sheet then put a second sheet on. Once the bottom edges are aligned, the sheets will be parallel and perpendicular to each other.👍
Set Seriously they have 'o idea what thay is 😅 I ll be going to the cabin for a while and then I'll get my own kind of Latte.
So im 54 and a widow. I love the woods❤ seriously GOOD LUCK!!!😅
Ooga booga wolf milkers! Happy Saturday!
James, the Roof looks great, Odin is watching over you!!!! May the gods stay true to you!!! Hail Odin!!!! Oooga Booga
I’m just about to watch this episode, I am only here for the OOGA BOOGA’s and the BERRYS AN CHERRYS and god I hope to hear them both! 🤣🤣
Holy cow I just realized how many subs you got now! Talk about growth since week 1 haha. Well done.
The matt black metal roofing looks amazing on the cabin definitely worth the additional cost
The buds are swelling on Thor's Red Oak. Yes!
I live in the UK and just watched this on my lunch break while revising for my final uni exams. I'd like to live in an off-grid place like that, but I'm too old for 10 kids, lol.
Not many modern women want a whole passel of offspring 😅
This is my favorite video series on KZhead! Great videos. Thanks
That roof is a huge change on the house for better!. Hi from the Basque Country!. I discovered your channel about a month ago and now I wait all the week to watch the new episodes 😊
Why not put gutters along the over hang with tubing going towards water tanks either end, lengthways.....then you will have a close at hand water supply......
I respect how observant you are of the small details your surroundings have.
I'm one of those 5% of people but unfortunately I'm taken... Seriously... I love this channel. You're very funny. Congratulations on your hard work and beautiful cabin. 😊
Wish you the best of luck in the wifey search. Best bet is to find a woman that's already from a northern area. One that used to the cold and woods. A lot of people probably think they could do the off grid thing and after a few weeks break. Again, wish you the best and love waking up on Saturdays to a new video!
Hearing those frogs makes my heart sing
I've been calling Saturday mornings, when I watch your newest video, "The Best Time of the Week!" Thanks so much! You're doing great! Sorry if this has been asked a million times but - why no tool belt? I'm half way through this video now and it wouldn't surprise me if the next scene is you buckling one on! Be safe and take care!
Oh man, I love this. Beautiful country like paradise. Your Cabin is going to be fabulous.
100K subs very soon. Congrats on the growth of the channel is such a short time. James You are amazing
It’s me! I’m in the 5% LOL! You are doing an amazing job. So look forward to Saturday mornings and these videos to see what you have done throughout the week! See you next Saturday!
I've been watching from day 1 - I truly appreciate your work and everything you do - For me this is a dream - Good luck and Cheers from Romania
Good morning from Portland Oregon , thank you for another great episode. You’re awesome.
Man oh man what a way to wake up by taking a sunrise bath, so beautiful and perfect. Good morning to you, your homestead is coming along . So exciting to see your progress every week. I can't wait to see you do the inside as well. Have a grest day
Another great KZhead channel West Cork Wander, a couple in Ireland refurbishing an old stone cottage, mentioned you a couple of weeks ago.
Continues to look good! You need to sleep in your loft! When I was at your stage, I took the maiden voyage to sleep in it that’s when it felt like a cabin to me!
Such a nice watch, as always. Keeping the production quality HIGH. I'd recommend getting a proper tool belt to make work more convenient and safe, especially in awkward spots like the roof. If you already have one, I must've missed it! It will be a great investment, as you will be building and crafting up until you reach the gates of Valhalla! The barefoot shoes were a great choice, also works since you can completely control what kind of debris your construction site has lying around. Greetings from Finland - can't wait for the sauna project.
It’s shaping up. Wolkmilk power. Berries and cherries! Watching from Hamilton, Ontario 🎉
This is amazing love this, finally caught up all 21 episodes........ Cant believe 51mins and no ogggaaaaaa booooggggaaaaaaaaa
Two weeks without an Ooga booga! WFT!
The matt roofing was definitely worth the drive to Acton! Excellent decision. Looking great!
I love Wild Homestead Saturday mornings.
Will you be doing a kitchen garden eventually? Autumn is probably the best time to start it, as you can use the fallen leaves as organic matter to fill the raised beds. Morgan Donner has a video of her turning her garden into a historical-style kitchen garden, so that's worth a watch before embarking on it yourself. A kitchen garden they can plant anything they like in is also very tempting for the ladies... add a wood fired bread oven and a chicken coop and you'll be overrun with as many neurodivergent nerd chicks in historical dress as will fit in a cabin.
Love the Shackleton reference! What an a story of perseverance!
I made my first lof cabin at 16 years old. Watching this guy doing it the same way is pretty cool lol
So many young men can learn from this. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Have a great, safe week!
Dude!! You've no idea how pleasing it was for me to see you cut the excess membrane off the edges prior to the STEEL!! going up. Hello from Ireland, looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, Stay Frosty amigo. 😎
Watching every Saturday from Norway. Keep up the hard work, starting to take shape 😊
I was totally questioning if black was going to be a good color but now I'm convinced! It looks fantastic!
I am from the kingdom of Jordan, I've been waiting since 2 am our time 😂 there's 7-8 hours apart! What have you done to us James?!
Just a tip but I feel like you already knew it: once you finish, put some sort of metal netting to close up the gap underneath the roofing or it will become a nest for all sorts of animals that will absolutely destroy your inner roofing :) it's unfortunate but absolutely necessary to keep the roof in good shape!
Honestly I’m surprised and impressed at how comfortable you are starting to look with heights! In the beginning videos, you definitely looked like you were not enjoying the heights so much and now, even though you mentioned it being hard, you look so much more comfortable! Congratulations on all the progress with the build!
I thought the same
as a fellow gym lover I am so STOKED to hear that you are planning to build a “forest” gym. it also brings a whole new flavour to the already unique style of your off grid cabin series. keep it up good sir! Ooga booga!
We all need an escape to nature. For now, you're living what most here only dream of. Hopefully, I'll soon dare to head in that direction. Just keep it up... you're becoming a movement 😊👏
Good Morning, Bud!Saturday morning, coffee, James, and the build. Life is good.
James! I don't know how I didn't think of advising this before but how have you not started a jug of mead to break out when you finish?! A bit of Honey, some of those berries and cherry, 10-20 days to ferment then 3 to 6 months to condition/settle, then you have the nectar of the gods!
Another great episode. Glad you are getting that truck next week. Have you figured out how you will cut your metal panels and trim? I recently covered my friend's 50 year old cabin with metal panels (roof & walls). I used a pair of aviation snips (left & right or green & red). But for cutting the panels I invested in a Milwaukee M12 nibbler. Check it out for yourself. This tool is like magic. It even collects the tiny metal cut-outs in a bag that you empty instead of dropping them on the ground where they can stick to your boots and later scratch your new matte black roof. I basically did the whole house with this small cordless machine on only a couple charges with the M12 battery.
James, your videos are NEVER NEVER NEVER boring❤❤❤❤ I LLLOOOVVVEEE your content and I'm sure your other viewers do too. Take care and be careful on that roof!!!!😊😊
The “raising an Irish wolfhound”, always makes me laugh. As if that’s the noteworthy fact after the 10 babies.
Perhaps a combo Gym / meditation studio on the river! I also think we need to name the Ever-Watchful Grouse. Perhaps Baldr. Roof looks amazing! GREAT JOB!
You sir need a tool belt with pouches for your nails and screws. Would help you for sure. As always love your videos and be safe kid!
I have mentioned that several times about the tool belt and to keep his safety glasses on. Maybe he will listen to you. 😊
@@brunildagautier9309 we just trying to help the young lad 😆
Hey James. You're headed into rainy spring. Why not divest your efforts now into indoor and outdoor work so you're not missing a beat on rainy days? Sending love! Keeping going!
Are you going to fell and peel some trees soon as spring is the best time to harvest them? Your saw mill will work better on seasoned trees as green ones get sap on the blade. You need a lot of trees for future projects and a crap load for all the milled wood you will need. Set aside two or three days and recruit a couple of family and friends. Again watch The Outsider. Go to his early videos. You will love his channel.
Great job with the strapping. It’s important to have the horizontal strapping above the vertical strapping to drain any water that gets in. You got it exactly right. The alternative method with one level of strapping instead of two is to set it at a 45 degree diagonal, so that the metal can attach and water can drain.
An idea for you.. stack all you steal roofing evenly together on the ground and pre drill screw holes. Then, all screws are perfectly and evenly spaced. It also makes installation a lot easier, and you don’t have to tap screws through the steal while your up on the roof. Cheers! And love the Channel. Happy building!
The roof looks great! Promise the ladies chickens and you'll get millions of applications!
I can’t wait to see what you do inside your little cabin. With the sawmill coming, you might like to check out Smokey Mountains Outpost’s set up. He’s built everything from his own sawn lumber. 🇦🇺 another site that would be worth checking out is This Off Grid Life.
James really love this episode. Everything is looking absolutely amazing. I think it’s time to build a fire pit and have some cool fires outside with all your scrap wood. Thank you again for my Saturday coffee wild Homestead.
Roof looks fabulous. Lucky it wasn’t a super sunny or hot day otherwise you would have been roasting and sunburnt being up on the roof all day. Good work champ.
The next thing you should build on your own land is a propper outhouse. No more shitting in the snow/rain or in fear of bear attacks in your sturdy outhouse.
Ayyyyyyy always a pleasure on a Saturday morning!
G'day, 8pm here in Brisbane. Says a lot that I am watching a KZhead vid at 8pm Saturday night. 😅
Your series has totally captured my disabled husband's attention. He has a question: do you have a plow for that quad?
Nice work, enjoying the series! As a general suggestion, think ahead about any project you are doing and try to do whatever you can on the ground horses once you’re up on the roof. It’s too late now, but for example, the vertical strapping boards could have had screws started in them on the ground so that once you get on the ladder, you just place the board and reach and screw the screws in that are already started. Saves you fumbling around in your pouch for a screw and starting it when you’re on an uncomfortable ladder. Same thing for facia boards or rake trim or just about anything that’s up high. If you spend a minute with a tape measure and do some layout, you could make your life a lot easier.still great work for someone who never done it! Keep them coming
I guess I'm one of the 5percent who is interested in living off grid but not alone.
If I was a lady, I'd live in that tent with you just to witness the glorious build. Ooga booga all the way.
So, James, not for nothing but I’m fascinated with your work and your passion for the task and your program concept. What distinguishes you from other off griders is your personality. Matchmaking you with “a magnificent wife” is going to be a trip. The whole “me Tarzan, you Jane” thing will add an entirely different dimension to your life that portends a really fun aspect to the story. I know you have firsthand experience with at least one selection shtick similar to “the Bachelor “. Your woman better have some major chops to be able to keep pace with your juice.
I know your videos come out Saturday morning I have been sick out both ends I am mustering up the strength to watch this now. Nice hat
James, roof looking really great! Please give some consideration to using a safety rope in case, you slip or fall. Hank
Those roof sheets look BEAUTIFUL 🤌👏👏👏
James? I love you in the new hat! The gym sounds lovely.. a sauna is def needed for winter! It's really coming along..
Hey James, we're enjoying watching your adventures building your dream homestead. We love ours! Cheers from the North Shore.
The matt black roof sheeting does look really good. It's great to see the cabin finally taking shape
Northern english lady here, who would never get in the way of berries and cherries. 😂
You’re a man after my own heart… Berries & Cherries are my staple go to food . I’m nearly 70 years old and this combination of goodness keeps the joints working just fine along with a host of other benefits.
And ravens spiritually mean: Ravens often represent ancient wisdom, intelligence and transformation.
Full size truck hands down that way you can tow and carry any materials you need in the future and your Irish wolfhound will need a place in that truck. I would also suggest a crew cab so you can fit a few of your 10 kids in the back seat when necessary. lmfaoo ... The back seat gives you a place to put tools and gear in inclement weather as well as a place to sleep if your traveling or camping in inclement weather.
Wow! Looks great!! Can't believe you were able to complete this all by yourself. Yikes!! Not for the feint of heart. Can't wait for the entire roof to be complete (as I'm sure you would agree) and you can get the flooring, windows and doors complete so you do not need to sleep in the tent anymore!! Wow! Amazing!! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next episode!!
Little tip for you don’t used the battery as a hammer it breaks the casing instead use the head of the drill from experience it makes the battery’s last longer
Here in the UK it dropped about 12:30. I couldn’t actually watch until 17:30 (family commitments). I’m concerned that my week is concentrated on “I can’t wait for Saturday to watch the next episode”
