  • I can’t believe this reader didn’t read he opening authors note which arguably is the most important part of the entire novel in terms of understanding the POV aspects. Massive fail

    • Yeah it's weird. Chapter 100 doesn't quite make sense anymore! Nor 2 and 6, etc. Edit: I've updated the description of the video to mention this.

  • I found this book really difficult to read for the first time. It has the reputation of a potentially thriller with the tiger on a boat. But when I first read it in high school, I was impatient with the 200+ pages it took to get on the boat. After graduating college, taking world religion classes, and anthropology, environmental science, I understand how important contextually all of the philosophical/nature exposition is.The author tends to drags out lists/details too much at times. It better explains how his traumatic response to violence or going against his beliefs and upbringing eating fish to survive is impactful and something that could cause him to disassociate with what needed to be done to survive. That said, still a sleepy read and much better and more captivating with a narrator. I’m glad I’m giving it another chance as an adult, but I think in general the pacing of the movie and the play with amazing puppetry on broadway where they shortened exposition greatly imprisoned the story and tied it better to religion than the book. It reads like an action packed, unbelievable, fantasy story like ones found in Hinduism. The pressure and humility of sin/sacrifice like Christianity. And the dedication to morals and tradition like the Muslim culture. It truly is a “religious text” and Pi’s adventure and sacrifice is prophetic.

Wow reading the introduction for the first time really helped to understand the book better. I like Pi's outlook on religion, wish there was more people like him. Maybe if we all had the same outlook on religion we would be able to understand each other's beliefs. I love that he's so compassionate about animals and his love for God. I have so much respect for Pi. ❤

  • The part in the boat when he describes what it's like to lose the people in your family is so sad. "To lose a brother who you are supposed to grow old with and recieve nieces and nephews to grow the branch of your family tree... to lose a father who looks after the family tree and is the suppose, the mother is like the sun---" So beautiful. This book has just become one of my favourites to read, I might even re-read it soon its that impactful with its philosophy and voice.
