A MUST Upgrade for Jeep Wranglers with Six Speed Trans - B and M Sport Shifter

If you have a 2007 or newer Jeep Wrangler JK with the 6 speed manual transmission, this is a must watch video because the B&M Precision Shifter upgrade will change the driving characteristics that much... in a good way!
This install isn't ideal for all "do it yourself-ers". There is a tricky bit of lowering the gas tank and transmission cross-member to get access to the foam donut and top of the transmission. I go through step by step in the video to show how the at home mechanic can get this done. The hardest part for me was to just get the stock shift knob off!
The shifter is a very high quality part and the housing is made from billet aluminum with internals constructed out of 4140 chromoly steel and will reduce the throw between gears by 35%. I take the Jeep on a test drive after the install to show the new shifter in action.
Plus, I also give a shout to / rubiconunlimited who sent me a cool "pull to eject" decal that goes on the driver's seat adjust handle and adds a cool bit of flare (might even be good for a few extra horsepower... can't confirm yet) Check his page out.
Here's where to get the "pull to eject" sticker:

  • My 2008 JK was CONSTANTLY falling out of first gear. Watched all the videos about the synchronizers needing to be replaced (which made no sense at all). Then I saw your video and thought what the hell and got the B&M shifter. What a difference. Been driving it for four months now with no more first gear issues. I will say that I was able to remove the foam isolator without dropping everything underneath. But what a product this shifter is. 100% recommend to anyone having ghost shifting issues.

  • I received the shift lever first and put it on. To remove factory knob easily I used a ball joint separator tool. (Looks like a tuning fork) After removing trim rings. Slip it over the shaft. Tap upwards with a medium size hammer. It pops right off. When driving I noticed less flex in the shaft. I like it already and I haven't even put the other part on. I also will get a better idea of the difference between factory and B&M linkages.

I'm no spring chicken when it comes to manuals. Really disappointed with the sloppy shifter and even more with the under filled trans. Change it out guys! It's easy and costs very little compared to the issues later.

  • My apologies if this question has already been asked and answered. Aside from the foam isolator, do you think there would be enough clearance to get the shifter in place without dropping the whole transmission 3 inches? Because that seems like a ton of work just to reuse a $20 part. I think I’d rather just invest in a new one before starting the install then cut the old one out. That way I can skip that whole ‘drop the tranny’ thing.

  • After having my 2007 JKU Rubicon pop out of first gear for several months, I broke down and ordered this shifter. To say I am pleased with the results would be an understatement! Nearly a month after the new shifter install....not one pop out! The install was easier for me. I was able to get the shifter in without lowering the cross member and\or lower the trans. Much more secure and positive shifts with no vibrations. It is now more fun to drive my '07 with 110K on the clock. If anyone is having the same issues, give this B&M shifter a try.

    • So this mod solved your issue of first gear pop out? I have to hold mine in first gear (or else) and since they don't sell the fix anymore, I thought I might try this before going to a new transmission.

      @blakstar64@blakstar645 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, it did. It has been nearly a month as my daily driver with no pop outs of 1st gear since install. I also read that it would need a trans pull and rebuild to remedy, but a $500 try is worth $2500 or more. The shifts are solid and secure. It takes some time getting used to, but way better than stock feel. I don't want to gaurantee that it will do the same for you, but for me it was worth a try and has been a success. I may need to pull my tranny at some point for clutch replace but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. At that point, I may have a rebuild as I'd like to get 200,000 miles plus out of my JKU. Good luck!

Using the shifter right away can displace the liquid and cause tiny breaks in the seal, which will potentially allow oil to leak out and worse, potentially and let dirt and or water into the gearing housing. • That is so cool. The bad thing about Jeep is when you go off-roading or head any kind of bumps it'll jump right into neutral it seems like you solve the problem. Good job. I've been watching a lot of stuff about Jeeps I am actually getting one and a couple of days so I'm starting to see what people can do and so far the best Channel I found for Jeeps is your Channel so you just got yourself a new subscriber

    • AutoEdits Since I already tried your setup and know how that feels, now you can try mine if you like :)) 1. B&M Manual Shifter (you should already have this) 2. Factory stickshift (it’s longer than B&M) 3. AJT shift knob (it’s bigger and havier. It will make shifting much smoother) All that should take your shifting experience to the next level Please lat me know what you think ;))

  • I bought my jeep used and it came with this shifter. I took it in to a buddy thinking there may be something wrong with it and his face lit up when he drove it. He new it was a new short shifter I just lucked out! Definitely takes some getting used to but in love with it.

  • I’m not sure if you’ve experienced the same problem I have. Mine seems to be easy to miss 5th gear. Your thoughts on the 5th-6th gear transition as well. Just wondering if this would improve those transitions.

    @biner626@biner6266 жыл бұрын
    • Bruce Bracy I seem to have this issue plenty of times. I always thought that I was distracted (not paying attention to what gear I’m in), but then again it’s never an issue on any other manual ride. So I end up putting back in fourth and easing it back into fifth. It feels like to me that the fifth gear should be more off to the right - hard to explain but it happens so often that I guess it is an issue. Glad to see I might not be alone.

    • Peter, the gating is strange for sure. They did have to leave a gate far right for Reverse. But, the transition isn’t good.

      @biner626@biner6266 жыл бұрын
    • @@biner626 That's why it is so stupid to put reverse all the way accross the shift pattern on the right. Reverse (a low speed gear) belongs beside the low speed gears. Top left guys! What's so hard about that? The guys that design these transmissions are NOT enthusiasts, and their daily drive is an automatic, so what do they know.

  • I am interested how this works for you after using it for a bit. My 08 JKUR pops out on washboard roads all the time. If this is the fix I am in!

    • I was wondering that too if any grinding gears - My JK Sport 2015 does it frequently in Fourth Gear! Pretty annoying - you really have to pay attention to get it in there if not GRRRRRRRR!!!

    • BTW look on eBay for a replacement transfer case knob. Sickspeed has the ball style ones to match your new shifter knob

    • Peter Brophy having bad synchros will give you that problem. I had to replace mine under warranty to get rid of the grinding and popping out of gears. This kit seems to help patch the problem though.

  • I was glad to see the dreaded shake is gone with that new shifter. I have a 16 JKU with the 6 speed and I haven't had any issues with it popping out of gear out on the trails but I have been popped in the knee a few times from the crazy movement in the shifter arm while wheeling. I may have to look at adding this to the list sooner than later.

    • I would suggest a shorter stick first (1-2 inches shorter). This alone could solve your problem and it would be much more affordable.

  • I have no idea what transmission Jeep puts in a JK, but for YJ and TJ owners that have the AX15 with the same wobbly shifter can add a Hurst quick shifter that does the same thing for their transmission woes. I put one in my 88 Wrangler over a decade ago and it made a heck of a difference just like this install. Great entertaining video by the way!

  • I need to get one of these. I replaced the toy transfer case linkage that worked but only barely. I replaced it with an Advanced Adaptors upgrade unit. Now that I can reliably engage both 4H and 4L every time without feeling that I am breaking something it is time to get more precision out of the main stick. Some mods only get used once in a while but this one gets used every time you drive your Jeep. Thanks for this video, I don’t know how I missed seeing it sooner as I have followed your channel since about your second video.

    • Well I'm glad you stuck around ... I've had problems with videos just staying hidden for a long time.

      @AutoEdits@AutoEdits3 жыл бұрын
  • So, just completed this upgrade on my 2005 Jeep TJ Rubicon. The "only" downside is I had to do some cutting on the rear portion of my console so I could get the shift into 2nd gear. I also had to cut part of my gearshift floor plan cover gasket. These modifications resulted in my leather shift boot not fitting properly and a bit more transmission noise coming up through the floor boards. The speed shift is tight but I'm told it will loosen up. I like the short shift range - it does make driving the jeep more fun. I'm going to have a friend help modify my shift boot with an extension so it fits properly and I'm going to use some non-flammable rubber sheets to help pad under the console to help with the noise. Took a bit longer than I had planned, but at least I didn't have to drop the gas tank.
