Making Woodturning Big Scraper Tool with HSS(high speed steel)

Hello, this is a video of making a big scrapper for wood lathe using a flat high speed steel bar.
The edge of the scrapper's blade is a gentle curve that makes it useful for organizing the inner side of a dish or bowl.
The abrasive angle of the scrapper was polished between 60 and 65 degrees.
The blade used is HSS (high speed steel, SKH-51 / HRC 60-62) 35x8x200.

  • Just the fact that one doesn’t need to temper the steel to replicate this is a major plus! Great video. As a beginner I had never seen the wire slot burning trick but it’s so cool and ingenious. Thanks!!

  • I bought piece of similar HSS off Amazon. I had my doubts but it's great. I made scraper and use a sending belt sharpen.

  • Very nice scraper. I may use your design to make a negative rake scraper. Thank you for sharing!!!!

  • I have made a lot of my own lathe tools but you do probably have more invested in this one them buying, me too. At one point I thought you were going to get a catch when you approached the end of the curvature. I have one negative rake scraper but not my favorite. Shear scraping you can take off just a wisker of wood. 👍

  • Love it! I'm curious which grits you're using on the grinding wheel to create and sharpen the bevel.

  • Beautiful tool with a very well done finish. Congratulations. I would like to know the durability of the cutting edge and if you need to sharpen it constantly? Why is there no need to quench HSS? Big hug from Brazil

  • Great instructional video thanks. What technique is shown fixing the HSS to the tang? I could not tell whether it was welding or brazing. Also what equipment are you using for this? The nozzle looked small & ideal for small jobs like this.

    • The initial tacks to hold things together were don't using 'mig welding' the rest of the welding was 'tig welding' TIG has a steeper learning curve but it's worth it!

  • Смешно когда отрезали под хвостовик то зачем то охлаждали водой , а затем стали варить полуавтоматом то нагрелся до красна ?

  • The HSS material is somewhat questionable (looking from the shape of sparks while grinding).
