EGR intake spray (aka cleaning the EGR without removing) vs. toothbrush. Can you clean the EGR valve in 1.6HDi engine without dismantling?
This is a video showing how dirty the EGR valve is in a 1.6HDi or the same as 1.6TDCi and then spraying diesel EGR cleaner and showing again how clean the EGR valve is after. I am also showing how clean the EGR valve is after manual cleaning using just a toothbrush and simple dishwashing liquid. The car is a 1.6HDi Peugeot Partner 2007 (90bhp; M59; 9HXC engine; ~106,000 miles or ~171,000 km). The engine is the same as in a Citroen Berlingo from the same year and also several other cars, e.g. Ford, Volvo, Mini, Suzuku, Mazda 3. This guide should be similar to other Peugeot and Citroen cars, also Ford 1.6TDCi, apart from the position of the airbox filter.

This is a replacement EGR valve that I replaced ~2 years ago. I have travelled ~10,000 miles or ~16,000 km since then. The carbon build up in the EGR valve is from this mileage.

  • A follow up that addresses most of your comments about MAF, rpms, spraying far from turbine: kzhead.info/sun/atGipMd8aoFqn5s/bejne.html Just to add to the video some afterthoughts. Yes, I did not have a helper to keep the rpms at ~1,500, so that could be a reason why it did not work. I did not think about it too much at the time, but probably should have had somebody to keep the rpms. It was not on purpose. It might have not worked on my particular engine, but it could work on yours. There might be several reasons, for example I had little carbon deposits, so it might not have been so effective, but if an EGR valve is quite blocked from carbon it might perform better. Another reason might be that my EGR is blocked and is simply shut constantly and I do not know about it, so nothing can go through it and hence the EGR valve was the same. I cannot do much about this, I have checked with Diagbox and it does not report problems, but you never know, the EGR valve might be faulty. So, take this video with a pinch of salt as it could well be that my experiment was wrong. Additionally, please do not use any sort of oven cleaner to clean the EGR valve, it is a bad advice that I have seen many times across youtube. The EGR valve is aluminium and most oven cleaners will have some combination of KOH or NaOH. KOH or NaOH will eat/dissolve the aluminium of the EGR valve and while it will look clean you may end up buying a new one. Any carb cleaner will do, but even better, use dishwashing liquid and an old toothbrush under the tap. Dishwashing liquid is a degreaser and will clean it safely! • Never seen a video that proves before and after, but results are as i expected, nothing! which makes sense if egr is not due to open then nothing will go through, but i think the majority will end up at intercooler, well done for being the one who finally proves it is a total waste of time and money, good video.

    • What does that mean "if egr is not due to open"????? It IS opened on idle so it should go through, the problem is that the spray gets burned during the ignition cycle so nothing really "washes" the egr.. Btw i just bought this little 'miracle' for my 1.0TSi, we're gonna clean the intake and valves with it, i wanted a carb cleaner for the job but they gave me this EGR/turbo cleaner (again, how is it gonna clean the turbo when everything gets burned during the ignition 🙄🙄🙄).. guyz anybody knows how often should i disassemble the turbo and give it proper cleaning? My mileage is 60k km btw but those valves get dirty as soon as 10k km so.. let's go for them

  • I broke down in my Golf 5 TDI yesterday. It cut out and wouldnt restart, right in the middle of Worcester at rush hour, so I was not very pleased as you can imagine. AA man came and started it with a squirt of Bradex Easy Start up the big plastic intake pipe after removing a clip to get access into the tube. It fired instantly. He said the stall problem was probably caused by EGR valve being stuck open/ shut. I took the EGR off this morning to find the whole of it full of carbon. I could not believe how much carbon was in there!!. Literally a cupped handful of sticky carbon. Cleaned it all out with a blade and a brake cleaner spray can. Put it all back together and the engine not only sounds quieter but it pulls very much more powerfully. My Golf 5 TDI 1.9 PD had covered 107k miles and wasnt slow by any means but now its very much more rapid and smooth. I am an old motor enthusiast and have been messing with petrol engines for years. I have never seen such a mess inside an engine intake system. I can hardly believe the engine worked at all. So if you have an oldish TDI, take off the EGR and clean it out. As this man says there is no way a spray of this EGR cleaner would have removed this sticky carbon muck. I reckon the diameter of the throat of the EGR was closed down by 30% of cross sectional area and the EGR valve which lifts up under vacuum was not working at all. It is now. Taking the EGR off is a bit of a pain in places but you must do it. Dave

  • Amazing dedication. The OP went to an extent of doing a before and after. This is the kind of video I was looking for all these while. EGR cleaning is such an underrated process. More people should be aware of why it's done and how it affects the performance, especially on high mileage cars. I have a Ford 1.5 TDCI diesel FIGO. This car is sold in Asian markets but I have seen the similar engine being used in Fiesta in the West. The first GEN FIGO sold in India had the same engine configuration as shown in this video. But the second gen FIGO has EGR placed in the most awkward place. It's right in front of the firewall, under the wiper motor. I searched the entire KZhead for a proper EGR dismantling video for 1.5 TDCI engine but no luck so far. I have seen only two videos from Mexico but then I don't understand their language and those videos weren't clear - shot in poor light with shakiest camera work. Hope the OP would post a EGR dismantling video for FORD 1.5 TDCI engine. Some of us DIY-ers would greatly benefit from learning how to do EGR service at home. Especially figuring out where EGR cooler mounts are and how to reach them without dismounting the engine from the car.

Results are making sense becouse i dont see a way that the cleaner could be making its way through the combustion chamber and up into the egr valve. And at least on my 2.0hdi the egr valve closes after ~8 to 10 seconds at idle to prevent clogging the intake manifold. And it seems quite impossible to be able to clean anything from the egr valve without taking it apart.

It's just so logical why this would never work, mainly due to the speed of flow that makes , and the absence of abrasive action. I drove for 10min after spraying process at high revs and Before/After were identical. I performed a deep cleaning after with the same product spraying directly in the EGR and all carbon went away easily. It did its purpose, but had to be sprayed directly in the affected area. Thanks for the video!

  • Great video. I really appreciate just how much effort you went to, dismantling and re-assembling that part of the engine, to run this test with the EGR in situ and show real world "before and after". It would have been so much easier just to spray the removed EGR with the cleaner or do the test without removing the EGR and then claim the engine was running better [as most of the other videos do]. So kudos for going the extra mile [or kilometre!] to conduct a definitive test. Seeing the amount of effort people have to go through to clean removed EGR valves manually, I've always doubted a couple of squirts from an aerosol would do much at all and you've just proved my suspicions. Even if they did work, surely they'd just shift all the crap out of the EGR valve and into the intake manifold anyway? So "kicking the carbon down the road"... to coin a phrase.

    • @@Agorija Haha, good luck with the studies! I suspect a wiser career move is to study the Biology, but gradually move to analysis of data or in other words, bioinformatics/statistical analysis. Better career move, fewer people to compete with and higher salary. It goes without saying that you still analyse biological data.

  • Fantastic proof..EGR problems are so common, so WHY don't the manufacturers design it so that the EGR valve is EASILY removeable for cleaning as part of a full service!

    @automatic7713@automatic7713 Жыл бұрын
    • Good question, but I suspect car manufacturers are in the business of selling cars rather than making them in a way that they last forever and it is easier for the customer. Normally an EGR valve starts to give problems at ~60-70,000 miles, so probably quite opportune timing for buying a new car. A lot of people will be: "this car is starting to give me problems, need a new one". If it was easy to clean, people would keep their cars longer.

  • I repeated the same operation as you on a VW Golf tdi with similar results. I did have a helper holding the rev's up and spraying in short bursts close to the EGR valve ( so after the MAF ). The EGR was quite badly clogged and so I expected some sort of result. But TBH there was almost no change to the EGR valve. Strangly though the inlet manifold did show signs of some carbon removal. In the end I did a manual clean with break cleaner. Very messy job. As a follow up less than 3,000 miles later the EGR valve was stuck again and the car failed its MOT test on emissions. This time I fitted a new valve. they're not too expensive and the job took less than an hour. As opposed to 3 hours of mess. 🤔🤔

  • This is a great video, it confirms what I’ve been thinking for years, those egr cleaners are a waste of time, they just don’t work. I just can’t imagine how such a small amount of egr cleaner could do anything given the speed that it actually passes through the egr valve,it’s a no brainier really when you think about it. Thanks for sharing this great video, maybe you could do a video on carbon cleaning to see if that process works or not, that would be interesting as I think companies are charging around £100 for a carbon clean. Thank you.
