How the British royal family makes money
This is what Harry and Meghan are giving up.

The British royal family is very rich, but not as rich as you might think. And that’s because of a centuries-old model for how they make their income - and taboos about earning a private income outside of their official duties.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are breaking free from the rules of how royals make money, which just might be a savvy financial decision.

There's a flaw in this. If the monarchy is removed, the House of Windsor will just reclaim all the crown estate from the UK government, given the fact that they haven't given up ownership of the Crown Estate. They just give up the revenue from the estate to the UK government as per the treaty, and get sovereign grant instead. The government doesn't own the crown estate. It is owned by the House of Windsor. In case the monarchy is abolished, the treaty becomes null and void, and the Windsors suddenly have on their hand a multi billion dollar estate.
There's a flaw in that argument, which is that they don't have any real power. A bill abolishing the monarchy would also say 'the Crown Estate now belongs to the state in full' parliament is sovereign, they wouldn't have any way to stop this

@@xanderliptak And those that the people own, given them by George III in a business deal that obligated them to pay for the upkeep of the royals. How much income is generated for the British people today by those estates? If the amount is more than what they spend on the royals, they are making a net profit from having them around, if the amount is less, then yes, you are making money for them.
I mean, the alternative is that they step down and the British economy loses billions in tourist money. The reason why Windsor castle makes far more than any other European castle is that there is an actual monarch living in there. If the royals would step down, your taxes would go up, not down. Yes and no. You could say that maintaining a heritage site is pointless since they're just a collection of old buildings but they do bring in money through tourism. And the same applies to the monarchy. Their presence does massively boost the UK economy and I think actively hating them isn't really going to do anything since its not like they're colonizing countries like they used to do. Because she is your sovereign too. She represents Australia and other commonwealth nations as well.
Well yes but actually no Just when the monarch is on the land of the Commonwealth of Australia as head of state that the tax money is involved but when she is not there (most of the time) the money goes to her representatives, the viceroys of the land ( the Governors and general governor)
@@joycerouget2379 Does she have lands in Australia? If so, she receives revenue from it and you pay taxes to her.

Living in Britain I’ve been to Windsor castle many times and it was definitely worth it to pay to repair it

Why are you sleeping at 2pm? Get up, man!
You mean 2am...? Cause that's what happen to me
And thing is it doesn't even effects us, still we are watching..lol
The Queen gets a $104,000,000 grant each year. You're welcome.
@Atlas aït Amazal $400,000. Trump gets $1 (not including his travels)
@@afonsogarciapulido3229 Trump tells us he donates his salary to charities, but is on record as not being able to specify which. (Note also he is disbarred from running a charity after defrauding the Trump Foundation, and by inference, the US Treasury. He is also on record for plundering the US Government and economy. When he golfs or leaves the WH, he stays at his own hospitality businesses, along with his entourage and security detail: do you think he doesn't charge for that? He has instructed all kinds of other government employees to do likewise, e.g. Pence, the US Air Force, etc.. Foreign countries book rooms at his hotels that they never stay in. Even Jared is in on the action: he leased his Billion dollar loss of an investment in 666 Fifth Avenue to the Qataris, who had mysteriously been blockaded by the Saudis just prior. I would say that if Trump gets re-elected, he will be the second richest person in the world, after Putin.
@Hernando Malinche I mean it could go to a lot more useful things...
Atlas aït Amazal 400k a year. So 1.6 million for four years.
I dont really care for the royals. But they should get nothing if they decided to leave.
imagine all the people in the world who could use some of that money but instead they waste it on some family
Sorry, but they don't make money, they receive money.
Well, it is like if your dad is Bill Gates and you just inherit his money. Some of their ancestors did tremendous work for the nation. But I am talking only about private estate, not taxes.
Nah, that's only semi-true. As explained in video, mostly capital gains from estates. When yuor're that rich the money makes itself from compound interest.
@@afterall6418 Can you give an example of one of the Queen's ancestors who did tremendous "work" for the nation? I can't name any.
Michael Elizabeth the first, Edward the confessor, William the conqueror,, Richard lion heart, George the third Most recently George the sixth and many others.
@@Michael-jh9fd well the first king of Britten is the one that did the "work" of conquering
The first thing the happy couple did, being so concerned with climate change, accepted $1 million from an oil company just to show up at an event. They're also going to accept security detail paid for by the Canadian tax payers offered by our wonderful prime minister, I think I heard it's $350, 000 a year
Nell Raven 350 000 is nothing, especially for a rich nation like canada
@@ink7761 thats alot for doing nothing. All you have to do to earn it is free load as much as possible. What do you have to do to earn 350k? Oh wait, its not even a possibility
Harry should just be strapped. Ain't nobody going to be capped by a red headed prince from England.
Correction, the King didn't give up ownership of the Crown land, its held in trust in the interest of the monarch and the parliament. The state gets the money, a percentage of which goes to the Royals as the Sovereign grant. Should that agreement break down theoretically the property goes back to the family.
Imagine paying more taxes so that another family can live a royal life for infinite generations
It only costs the average taxpayer £1.29

Question: how much will the UK lose in tourism, among other things that the influence of monarchy make profitable, if the Monarchy is abolished?
"Am I pronouncing that right, 'duchies'?" Has to be one of the most on brand Americanisms I've heard in a long time.
She should have asked him how to pronounce Balmoral correctly.
I am always asking people from other countries mostly Mexico as we have a large population in utah if I am saying words right .
I'm American and I knew how to pronounce it since 10th grade. Maybe she skipped some history classes?
The 'moral' in Balmoral is pronounced in the way you'd pronounce moral, with the emphasis on the 'o' not the 'a'.
And you don't really pronounce the "w" in Cornwall. It's Cor-mal, not Corn-wall.
Oh ... I thought 'moral' is silent in Balmoral
Thank you XD I exclaimed so loud my partner heard me from the next room :)
Everyone in the comments: Talking about the royal family. Me: That's some nice background music.
