  • That poor dog looks like he's suffering under his own weight. I wonder if he could protect his owner without spraining something.

    • NONSENSE! I own an American Molossus...and he has NO TROUBLE supporting his own weight. He is 215 lbs and massively strong and sturdy. He's also perfectly healthy. He's never had a single health issue. Believe me when I tell you that, if he wanted to, he would FUCK YOU UP...BIG TIME. Your comment is ignorant as hell. On another note, my dog doesn't appear to have any of the health issues inherent in the Neapolitan. People talk about the "health" of these dogs, as if they are inherently unhealthy. Some people do not seem to understand that by bringing diverse blood lines together from two completely separate breeds, they become HEALTHIER than either of those breeds. Combining breeds tends to ELIMINATE health issues, NOT increase them, as the dogs have more healthy DNA to choose from. This is why mutts tend to be healthier than pure breeds. Marcus is really doing something special with these dogs...and because he is able hand pick each breeding from diverse blood lines, these dogs are generally going to be HEALTHIER than most pure breeds...and in time any potential health issues will be bred out. The American Molossus breeding program is a GREAT way to retain the awesome physical characteristics of the Neo, while eliminating the health issues. So, before you spit out nonsense, educate yourself. Just because a dog looks similar to a Neo, it does NOT necessarily mean they will experience the same health issues. Already, they are much healthier...and will end up being a very healthy breed.

    • They are similar to Neos as they were used to both create the Neo thousands of years ago and the Neos were used to bring them back. This breed had less skin than the Neos and had less of a dominant temperament. I will definitely continue to lesson the excessive skin to what is appropriate for this breed

There are plenty of opinions on a good dog, better dog and great dog in established breeds that have been an approved breed for hundreds of years so I’m aware that people will have the same critiques in my breed. That being said, I’m proud of the work that’s been put in, where the breed is and the momentum it’s gained in such a short time. I love this breed and I’m pumped that they’re back.

  • Honestly, all mastiffs can claim to originate from Mesopotamia and have served as Roman War Dogs. It's a nice mythos usually claimed by Cane Corso people. I'm a fan of the old-style, functional Neo before it was improved into a pile of wrinkles dragged around a show ring by a dog. Perhaps these new dogs are heading in that direction.

    • @@damaristighe3227 I agree on the old style Neo. I saw many of them while attending University in Firenze- primarily tasked with guarding some of the larger rural estates out in the countryside. Simply put, they were massive, surprisingly athletic, AND controllable by those charged with that function (otherwise a LOT of would be intruders would've been relocated to the local morgue). Colored black-at night, they were awe inspiring masters of their domain. I also agree with Keven Rivas, concerning their longevity. I myself have Kangals, and for a modern, giant dog, they have proved both surprisingly healthy , long lived and amazingly good with children.

  • The dog doesn't move well and the hips look weak.. it's also carrying too much weight.. having said that, I love what he's trying to do... however, the ancient mollossus traversed many many miles in hard conditions with ancient armies and that would require them to be extremely functional animals with high drive and exceptional physical endurance. They may have been very large dogs, but definitely not very heavy.. something in between the Tibetan mastiff and the Sarabi dog. I wish him luck though, and I'm sure these dogs of his are lovely family dogs.

  • I don't want to be mean especially knowing that this man read the comments. I honestly am very confused this dog looks like he's not functional, his structure looks abhorant, he looks like he's struggling under his own weight, he cannot move well, the poor thing honestly. And his head in the extra skin is way too much. This is not what an old-school Neapolitan Mastiff looks like at all. What I will say is yes, please please get breeding dogs hips and elbows certified. Be willing to cut dogs from the program. The dogs don't look well balanced. I understand you don't want them to be very agile, but a nice tuck and more balance in body in proportion to the legs will help the dog move better. Also, the wet-look is overdone. They have way too many wrinkles and that causes skin issues, allergies, and vision issues. Also, the dogo argentino probably has the healthiest build of any Mastiff. Some of the core so lines I would say come second. I'm excluding livestock guardian breeds because kangal's are very healthy and have a great build, I'm simply referring to Mastiffs that are used as protection for humans. These dogs do not look like they can move quickly. If you really want the wet-dog look but want a healthy and functional guard dog, the old-school Neapolitan Mastiff before the 1980s would be a much better representation. I'm not surprised that they can live in a condo they look like they gas out before they even get started. Health health & temperament should go hand-in-hand

  • Just out of curiosity. Did ancient dogs actually grow that big? I associate large dogs with modern medicine and diet. I am surprised to hear that Roman/Greek dogs could grow that big.

    • WE don't see any representations of this heavy look in Roman art. I'll change my mind if anyone can show an example from Roman times. In 1510 Machiavelli used the name Cane Corso for this general type of guard dog but they didn't really have a stable phenotype that can be said to be a reproduce to type in a fixed "breed". Stable breeds that constitute a genetic "clade" tend to come from the 19thC.

    • Same in ancient greek art; the vast majority of dog depictions show athletic, muscular but slim dogs in medium and large sizes. There are also some depictions of small dogs which were kept inside the house as companion pets. I am not aware of any ancient breeds that look like this. It would be in contrast to the harmony and functionality the ancient greeks so valued.

    • @@anthia1156 Precisely. Beauty, realism and harmonious proportions. The Romans used Ancient Greek art as their model, and we've had several periods of Neoclassicism after that. The Greeks were the ones that brought the dogs from Mesopotamia that the Romans inherited. Amazingly archaeologists have found that small domestic dogs were traded around Europe since prehistoric times: we ladies have always loved our lapdogs.

  • This dog cannot walk properly it woddles and definitely cannot run, that trot was so unbalanced. These dogs don't function. I love the idea but the execution is lacking. That level of wrinkles will lead to shar pei fever. Even shar pei shouldn't be heavily wrinkled. There meant to look like the bonemouth shar pei not the Western version.

YOU DON'T HAVE A TAIL, TRIM WHAT YOU HAVE THAT RESEMBLES A TAIL (NEED A HINT), ""develop" if you don't have the knowledge about the breed, don't develop, go inbreed yourself and see what happens, you may develop your family, there was one and only molossus, nothing such a american molossus, or other kind of molossus, don t be irresponsable!!!!!

    • You think the AKC can screw this breed up? The AKC does screw up a lot of breeds like the show line German Shepherd, the working lines are the only real German Shepherds frankly, but How can it be screwed up any more than it already is? The dog can barely move, looks like it's suffering under its own weight, does not look functional looks like it's going to have a lifetime of health issues, skin issues, I issues, ear issues, gastrointestinal issues, hip and elbow issues. This dog looks so unhealthy it looks like Frankenstein but what's more horrifying is how unhealthy it looks

Wonderful mixed breed, bit chunky for my taste 😂

  • This is why you need a purpose for a breed and saliva healing its not one. How can you bring a dog back from so many years ago ? the genes of those ancient dogs are lost in time the genes from modern dogs the ones he is using for his breed are not the same. Do a DNA test in one of this dogs and you will find 40 or 50 percent neapolitan mastiff and the modern neo not eve the one from 100 years ago the one that is all show and looks. That is why this dogs look like gentle giants .

What did he say that his dog was getting surgery on its elbow and passed away. Thats unfortunate. Stop saying you are bringing back the ancient breed as if you know what it was. You know that is not true. You have created what you think those dogs might have been. crossed a nio with a english mastiff.
