Self Rescue - ( Kitesurf Tutorial )

Self rescue is fundamental in kitesurfing. It is definitely one of, if not the most important skill you need in order to feel 100% safe and confident to kite in any kind of conditions. It is essential if you decide to kite in a light or thermal wind, where it can often drop from 20 to 0 knots in a minute. In this episode you will observe my favorite way of performing self rescue. Additionally you can go on my Patreon to catch the extra episode on how to practice self rescue at home.

    • One of the best tutorials on self rescue! Great that what to do with the board is also included as most tutorials simply forget about this detail. Also explaining the situation when one should and when should NOT perform self rescue is crucial increases immensely the practical usefulness of the video! I will definitely make my novice kite buddies watch it and we shall have a further discussion afterwards 😉

  • The best self-rescue video I found so far. I'm watching this because I had to perform self-rescue today on a lake and I didn't do it well 😅. I rolled the lines but I didn't create a sail, because I wasn't sure how to do it. I was close to the shore, so actually I could just swim. Luckily, other rider helped to drag me closer to the shore. Next time, I will be smarter 😁.

  • Thanks. This is a great video on self rescue. I've watched a bunch of them, and this is one of the only ones that tells you how to manage the board while you're doing it. Most just forget about the board. Nice tip about how to do the half hitch through the floaters. Short safety leashes are becoming more common unless you need a long one for unhooking, so you almost need to bring an extra leash for procedures when you need to leash up directly to the kite like you did when you swam (or when you're doing a long walk back up the beach with kite in smile position). It's all very straightforward, but when you're out in the water, even in calm conditions, it's easy to get flustered and mess up. It's something that people should definitely practice, even just doing a drill on land with just the lines will really help.

    @powerthinkvideo@powerthinkvideo Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you for your comment :) Yes, I was actually using a short leash on this video while swimming with the kite, so it's working well, unless you have a super short leash that might not be helpful :) As you said is good to practice Self Rescue on land, this is way I made and extra tutorial on how to practice Self Rescue at home, which is available on my Patreon :) www.patreon.com/kitesurf

  • Good video, the only point I would make is to prevent getting tangled in the lines is not to kick or bend with your legs but pull yourself toward the bar or kite in a outside bow or dogleg track. Also if your kite is dragging you to shore or kite destroying terrain, when the kite gets to where you want to stop it; with your legs straight dogleg pull yourself to the kite at whatever rate it takes to prevent the kite landing and damaging on shore. once shallow enough to stand you can rescue the kite. • I did a self-rescue today, it was a disaster. about 400 m off-shore. All lines tangled,. As I approached the kite, the slack lines would pick up loads of algae and ocean plants so it all became messier and heavier. Being Western Australia, there was 1 shark very close by too so it added to the stress. When I finally reached the kite, it was so twisted that I couldn't really turn it over to sail on it. I somehow managed a way to raise a little bit of it and that slowly got me to the shore after about half an hour and 2 km away from departure point, luckily before the shark found me. It's so important to do several drills of this when you are NOT in trouble, at least a few times every season, so when it happens, if it happens, you can react quickly and almost instinctively without trying to remember that part of your first lesson years ago. Thanks for all these tips mate!

    @dpwild328@dpwild328 Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you very much, I'm happy that you managed to learn from my videos :)) To be honest, in past I was teaching my students to connect the board on the safety leash. But no long time ago a friend connected his board on his safety leash while performing Self Rescue, and got quite a strong shot from his board in the had, so we realise that connecting the board on the safety leash is definitely not safe.

    @naxoskitelifekitesurfingsc5024@naxoskitelifekitesurfingsc5024 Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you :) Yes, it’s true that if the Safety Line is broken there has to be a completely different method for Self Rescue, which I never experienced, but just thinking about it seems like would be a quite difficult procedure and dangerous in certain conditions. • 1:48 I had this issue that the safety got tangeled around my legs when trying to reach the bar - the kite kept relaunching as on stearing line was twice around the bar when I crashed :( - Someone told me he always wraps the safety line around the harness hook - what are your thoughts about this?

    @Nilz4FR@Nilz4FR10 ай бұрын
    • Hello, yes, this is why I recommend to keep the board on your feet if possible so that the line doesn't twist around your legs... if you are not able to keep the board on your feet and the safety line turns around your leg or any part of your body you should let go the Chicken Loop and the kite should stay without tension, even if the back line was twisted twice around the bar... so it's strange to hear that your kite was still pulling if you released the Chicken Loop, the reason can be that actually also the safety line was twisted around the bar or with other lines so it didn't allow the safety line to slide out properly, or the safety system of the bar is not good, what brand of the bar you have been using when this happened? I do never recommend to roll the line around any part of your body and not even around the hook of your harness, I do not see the reason to do so, and if the line is wrapped around the hook of your harness and the kite starts pulling for some reason you are in danger, and here the only option remains to disconnect the complete harness from your self, if this is possible under a lot of tension, or to use the safety knife to cut the line from your hook.

    • @@kitesurfexperiencebypetar Exactly my thoughts. I was using the new Duotone Dlab Juice 15m2 when the click adjuster of the bar broke and the kite fell suddenly depowered out of the sky wrapping the offshore stearing line around the bar twice. It then dragged me offshore for almost 2 hours. I didn't want to let go of the very expensive kite because I was in no danger. I managed to get to the bar twice but the kite kept relaunching out of the water putting lots of pressure on the lines so I had no change to unwrap them. Been kiting for almost 20 years now and never experienced something like that.

      @Nilz4FR@Nilz4FR10 ай бұрын
    • @@Nilz4FR hmmm so you have been using a click bar from duotone? I didn't use this bar to often and on internet I cannot find if there is a stopper ball on the safety line and how far away it is. As the stopper ball has to be away for at least a SPAN of a kite, 15m is quite a big kite and the SPAN of a kite is quite big so it might be that the stopper ball was not far enough?

    • Hello Desjardins, Hehe is funny you are saying this :) actually I wanted to use the safety jacket(bouncy aid) but then people could say that, to perform self rescue would not be easily done without a safety jacket. As well very small amount of kiters are using safety jacket(bouncy aid 50N), because it is not very conformable for riding and performing tricks.. but more and more kitesurfers are starting to use the impact vest, which is good to see, how ever I don't feel big difference in floating with an impact vest or without one, as the impact vest is made mostly for crashes and as the name says impacts :)

    • Pozdrav Aleksandar, ja ne predlazem da krenes sa kitesurfingov sam... idi na barem 7-10 sati lekcije sa instruktorom pa onda ako su uvijeti sigurni nastavi vijezbati sam. Na kojem si ostrvu? Hvala ti sta pratis :))
