They likely only had time to stop new vehicle from entering a bridge at either end.
Reporters: 'Why not just drop anchor?' They say after witnessing what a ship that size could do to a bridge made of metal.
Dropping anchor would definitely help slow the ship down. Not sure if it would have made a complete stop. Plus, ships are only supposed to move a certain speed while leaving ports. How fast was the ship going? If they dropped anchor, it's possible it would have created a little bit of structural damage, but not that much.
The water was extremely deep, and it takes time to pay out the length of chain, etc. It's like asking why didn't you apply the brakes in a car accident, when even when you DID apply the brakes, the accident is still unavoidable. An anchor would not have changed the direction the ship was going in. People assume wrongly here the anchor could have made a difference.
The panel discussion is by far the best part of Meet the Press.

President Eisenhower was the last president before Biden, who took our roads and bridges seriously. I was there on those new roads and bridges.
I remember back in 1974, when I was six and seeing the new I-10 highway being constructed through New Mexico and Arizona. Reflecting back, it's mindboggling that it took roughly 25 years after Eisenhower's presidency for the land to be cleared so the new (current) interstate could be constructed.
@danadams6477 back in Alabama in the signs on the highways praising President Eisenhower for the new double lane highways, as I was a young boy sitting in a hot car no aircon enjoying the fact that it only took 35-40 minutes to travel 33 miles instead of 90+.

I'm sorry, but being from California and looking at the Francis Scott Key Bridge before the collapse, it's a wonder it stood erect for 47 years. Most engineers interviewed agreed that there probably isn't a bridge in the entire world that could have withstood a direct hit from that ship. Each bridge is unique for currents, depth of water, types of ships going through, etc. Dictating what should replace this bridge is premature- the physics of this waterway is unique.

It really looks as if the Francis Scott Key Bridge was poorly designed. The architectural engineer(s) who designed it should be held to some accountability. So sad and unfortunate for the people in and around Baltimore and across the country who are affected by this. Especially, for those workers, and their family and friends. My condolences go out to them.😔🕊

You have no idea that a container ship of this magnitude and weight did not exist in the 1970's. There was no design flaw. No bridge in the world could have taken this direct hit.
The shipper should be liable for the cost of a new bridge.Don't they have insurance? Lives lost need to be paid for.

I don't understand how contaminated fuel could cause a ship to run into a bridge. How does that happen???
Should they have harbor pilots control commandeering ships entering and exiting all US harbors for the foreseeable future? Should police have foreman contact info for work crews in public spaces? Would warning lights on the bridge or speaker alert help the work crew escape? Something to consider. Work crews can be on a public alert app to notify them if there is danger in their area. Various options are available to give people a better advantage to survive risky situations.
Odd how it turned toward the base of the bridge before the power went out. Also how the bridge fell so instantly. Like there was nothing holding it together. Lots of questions. Stations like this will never answer.
