How The Ayatollahs Came To Dominate Iran | Middle East Documentary
Iran's historical grandeur failed to translate in the modern period, due to European imperialism and incompetent rule. Thus forcing different elements of society to make their discontent known. Amongst these, the Ulama were often the leading force. This was especially true in the Islamic revolution of 1979, as different ideologies and groups banded together to topple the Shah and institute a more just and fair system that was rooted somewhat in democratic ideals. After the Shah’s deposition in January 1979, many of the revolutionaries watched in horror as Ayatollah Khomeini stole their dreams by forcefully establishing a theocratic state.

100% yes
Absolutely. By being less of a delusional idealist and more of a realist. By listening to the pleas of his people when he had the chance, particularly in regards to their call for democracy. By proving to his people that he was no tyrant. By listening to his advisors instead of assuming he knows better than everyone else. The Shah *genuinely* believed he was appointed by God himself to make Iran great again-this was the root of all his mistakes.
@@lambert801 Don’t forget the corruption
“The country’s economy was modeled in a way where money was supposed to trickle down from the top to the bottom, but what ended up happening was wealth was bottlenecked at the top and remained in the hands of the elite. As a result, the gap between the rich and the poor was becoming very distinct.” Oh hey! That sounds familiar! 🤔

Iran is still quite strong. It has the highest STEM graduation rate and launches missiles into space. Iran isn't weak.
Weak compared to what it could have become
Yeah-nah. Iran has the highest Stem graduation rate in that region - depth in numbers. Plenty of top talent stay. Iran is a powerhouse for a reason. Regardless, the brain drain doesn't change the fact Iranians are hyper smart, and it's being combated in several ways. @BB-xx3dv
They are hyper smart - anybody with a cursory understand of Iranian/Persian history knows that. Their achievements could fill up 10 encyclopedias. As the recent CIA leaks showed, Persians have IQ that is off the charts, bolstered by their STEM rankings and their global success in and out of Iran. It's an ancient civilization as everyone knows, with the most cunning rational actors I've personally ever seen. Totally cold-blooded. I find the Persians are 2 steps ahead of the others. It's their region to lose, Israel and the Arabs don't stand a chance against the Aryan Persians imo (without US backing that is).@BB-xx3dv
Yet another comical and incorrect statement. IQ tests where? Administered 100 years ago in Yemen and extrapolated to include Iran? Iranians have an average IQ (absurd number) of 84 based on Richard Lynn's preposterous and incorrect table ~100 years ago. Instead, look at this interesting data below from the American Census (available on Wikipedia as well): One in four Iranian-Americans holds a master's or doctoral degree, the highest rate among 67 ethnic groups studied. They have 21.5% business ownership rate. One in three Iranian American households has annual incomes of more than $100K compared to one in five for the overall U.S. population. 50 percent are in professional and managerial occupations, greater than any other group in the United States. Somehow they make a huge jump after moving to the US, especially in educational attainment and occupation. What makes it more interesting is that their first generation moved to the US during a mass immigration from Iran to the US in 1979. The same trend is true for Iranians immigrated to Australia. This is quite puzzling because for other countries, the level of success still lines up to a great extent after immigration. IQ tests in the Iranian American Diaspora show at least an average IQ of over 110. Among the highest in the world. That is simply insane. Nobody has that kind of flex (or a female winner of the Fields Medal in Mathematics either btw). Educate yourself. Being good at Math and Science like Iranians is rare. Ali Javan is generational. Maryam Mirzakhani is generational. Having a civilization with countless achievements like Iran/Persia is rare. Bottom line? Iran runs West Asia. Always has, always will. It's their region. They are the natural leaders. Israelis, Turks and Arabs need to accept it and move on.@BB-xx3dv

Thank you. I will look into it. I find it fascinating how Iran became the most influential and arguably powerful army in the world. Really. Considering how they survived so many recent wars and went on to win the Syria Civil War.
Impressive precision of facts, cohesion of oratory and coherenc of rationale❤❤
Not really, this anti-Khomeini narrative he has painted is not in line with what the Iranian people actually feel. They are by and large supportive of their government as can be seen in the millions that turn out every year to demonstrate for the anniversary of the revolution, and the millions who attended assassinated IRGC commander's funeral, amongst other obvious indicators. Heck, even the voter turnout during the 1979 March and December referendums that Imam Khomeini (r) held to ensure that the public really wanted and Islamic government are a feat of democracy that western so called democracies could only dream of - and confirm that this is what the Shi'a majority people of Iran want (Hikama conveniently left that out of this video to paint his narrative over the actual will of the Iranian people and portray Imam Khomeini the great Islamic scholar as a power hungry individual). I think this portrayal is either rooted in over consumption of western anti-Iranian propaganda, or with sectarian undertones. Either way, don't be fooled. This was indeed a Godly revolution, with much sacrifice of the Iranian people, that brought Islamic law back into a colonised country, and then subsequently began supporting the oppressed in Palestine and Yemen and Lebanon to wrest control of the region back from the western invaders
Much appreciated!
Very interesting.
Thank you!
You didn't go back far enough, to understand the islamic republic of Iran you need to understand Shia islam and the rights and heritage of Ahl-Bayt A.S.
Yes correct! And also the Shia ulama's place in politics of Iran. It was alwasy the case back since the time of the Safavids. It is one important aspect of their culture that this video failed to mention at all.
@@GaaraNous Ulama are the closest class to the people, we forget that but they guided communities and were a reference in education and discipline. They don't like when a faqih sits in parliment but isn't an alem the speaker? isn't he from the people? Are they not supposed to be the reference to people's issues as Imam Mahdi (عجل الله فرجه) told them?
I think that would be outside the scope of this video, which is more focused on the revolutions and political situation than the ideological or cultural specifics. The details of Shia Islam are probably better off in a separate video than crammed in a few minutes during this one.
@@Healermain15 Which is why this video is not a good source to understand the islamic republic of Iran. Politics rise from the culture and history of the country and shia islam is deeply rooted in Iran.
- 31:28 The irony of ironies is that there's an ancient (and pessimistic) Persian adage that there's never been something bad that wasn't replaced by something worse. Apparently. they forgot that. 🤦 - 31:55 Of course. That's how it always is. People who come to power by force don't just forget that, they're constantly aware that what they did to someone else could be done to them, so they always clamp down harder than their predecessor. 😕

Growing up, my afghan mom told me of times when Iran was so liberal. So said women wore mini-skirts and all sorts of things. Just goes to show that things can change everywhere.
It's called 'regression'
As an American Christian who lived through our immodest disgusting sexual revolution that gave us bikini’s and mini skirt clad young women and decades of moral degradation of women and men ever since, western leftist liberalism knows no limits or self restraints in anything. It sells lies as truth and embraces debauchery as freedom. I dont advocate totalitarian or authoritarian rule by flawed men but in self control in a life rooted in Gods grace and his Messiah the King of Kings Yeshewa the Messiah. The wicked dedicated to being wicked are their own worst enemies in the end.
Women wearing mini skirts dosent make a country progressive. Infact most ordinary people were still struggling with their conditions. Leftists and westerners like to show images of the few elite rich women in skirts
The way the Imperial Army of Iran simply collapsed and let the Ajatollahs take over is something I cannot get around of. I mean, the Shah had spent billions and billions to create a top of the class military and in the end it was useless
Armies are built in war and grow and gain experience!! The Islamic government has thousands of problems that make every Iranian tired, but the army it has created, because it is born of war (it is an unequal war), is much more powerful than the Shah's army and more powerful than any military force in the Middle East!!
The problem is that the army declared its “neutrality” during the revolution, thanks in part to some turncoats like Hussain Fardoust
They were tricked by general huyser, google it.. And also udssr had plans to get rid of the loyal remaining militants
@@RustamtheIranshahr_3000 I guess you are talking about the Iran-Iraq. The Iraqi army was a third class army in spite of the billions spent by Saddam Hussein and other Middle Eastern countries and even though the Shah had been overthrown already, the formation and weapons of his era played a role in the defense of Iran. Take for example the role played by the F-14s, they kept the Iraqi Air Force away from the Iranian air space and that was a key factor in preventing an Iraqi victory. So it wasn't just the Ajatollahs or the islamists
The Imperial Iranian Army had a plan to assassinate Khomeini
Whats the song at the starting?
Khomeini didn't hijack anything, unfortunately most of our people at the time approved of the theocratic dictatorship he created. In March 1979, the referendum that gave people the choices of yes or no to "Islamic republic" had a turn out of 98% where almost everyone voted yes. Later in the autumn, the referendum for the constitution of the Islamic republic which added the theocratic elements and the position of supreme leader had a turn out of around 80%, many parties boycotted the referendum, including the nationalist and liberal parties, Marxists (withe exception of the Tudeh), the MEK and Kurdish parties and yet still the turn out was very high with almost all of them voting yes. I think this is the best indication that the various secularist forces were just a minority who had illusions of their popularity and thus didn't see the actual beliefs of the people.
Well "neutral" democratists can't blame khomeini then , from a purely democratic standpoint unless a openly advocate for supremacy of liberalism.

God bless you may I ask where you get information on Iran's social an political transformation? I'm in America and believe a faith based social an political movement is possible and needed.
@@longhairdontcare122 I A faith based socio-political movement is trash unless it has a firm separation of church and state. Though one based on any religion but Islam is probably better than the Islamic ones since no religion is a political as Islam. Gandhi with all his flaws, is a good example of a movement with faith at its core that can be a force for good. For Iran modern history I suggest books from Ervand Abrahamian , I have recently finnish his "A History of Modern Iran", minus the last parts of the final chapter that were about the Islamic republic in the 90s and 2000s, the rest of it pretty good. Also, I think I didn't make it clear in my comment, though I believe our people chose Khomeini and his regime back then and the revolution wasn't hijacked, I hate them for it and I believe that generation who chose the Islamic republic is the worst thing that has happened to Iran since the Mongol invasion, perhaps, even worse.

nah it would've just been a western puppet. Iran would've been one of the richest and most technologically advanced countries if west didn't sanction it and other muslim nations didn't betray it in the name of shia-sunni split or self-preservation
The monarchy was brutal against it's own people. No one wants that kind of progress. Now Iran in the post shah era, despite the brutal American sanctions aiming to deprive its people of food, medicine, and technological advancement, has used the opportunity to become independent of the west thanks to the great leadership of Imam Khomeini and Khamenei. Since the Shah's regime fell, women's education has skyrocketed, the wealth gap has reduced, the medical and technological advances are uncanny, and of course the defence sector is strong. Iran is now making friends with non-Imperialist countries and the western countries will be left behind after the BRICS is set up. On top of all this, despite the western media and sectarian propaganda, the vast majority of Iranians support their government as can be seen in the millions that turn out every year to demonstrate for the anniversary of the revolution, and the millions who attended assassinated IRGC commander's funeral, amongst other obvious indicators. Heck, even the voter turnout during the 1979 March and December referendums that Imam Khomeini (r) held to ensure that the public really wanted and Islamic government are a feat of democracy that western so called democracies could only dream of - and confirm that this is what the Shi'a majority people of Iran want (Hikama conveniently left that out of this video to paint his narrative over the actual will of the Iranian people). The recent riots are carried out with western influence on a minority of the youth, and these individuals are bloodthirsty, killing civilians and police. France and other Europeans have cracked down harder on their anti government riots that were far less violent, Iran has showed much patience in this respect.
That's what you took from this video? 😂

What's wrong if khomeni was from India? His great grandfather left just before the British took over .... like why?
That would make him not a native iranian, but a foreigner who was trying to grab power from the natives. That was the aim of the propaganda. People don't like to get ruled by foreigners(in any way)
The true about this matter is, the west wanted to have this area islamic, and the rest is clear

Unfortunately your take on Mossadegh is very superficial and frankly inaccurate.
The only problem with this video is portrayal of Mossadegh. He was very popular. When he planned to nationalize oil, British and Americans freaked out. CIA and MI6 orchestrated coup to take him out. Shah did not want this, but he was told if he didn’t cooperate the crown would go to one of his brothers. I am American, and the more I learn, the more disgusted I become by how my country interfered with other governments for self-interest.
This is an islamist channel and of course the owner of the channel doesn't like the political views of Mossadegh, hence his criticism.
You get what vote for, the Iranians were socially if not financially happy in a progressive Muslim culture. Then they put in to power a traditional Muslim dictatorship straight from the 15th Century, now they are poor and miserable.

Imperialism
Whatever Shah's reign was like, the Islamic Republic regime made Shah look like a legend! Shah is nowadays revered as a benevolent ruler who genuinely cared about the well-being of ordinary Iranians, unlike the Islamic Republic regime that prioritizes reckless ideological foreign policy goals over the daily lives of millions of Iranians. Iran is a bankrupt shithole now thanks to Ayatollah Khomeini and his successor. Poverty, unemployment, and inflation are over the roof while hope is nonexistent!
You are blaming Iran for American brutal sanctions that target the Iranian people? Do you always attack the victims? Iran, despite the brutal American sanctions aiming to deprive its people of food, medicine, and technological advancement, has used the opportunity to become independent of the west thanks to the great leadership of Imam Khomeini and Khamenei. @@mayer14474 Again, what western leader in Russia's position would allow NATO (who promised not to expand in the 90s) to expand all the way to their borders and arm a government that is hostile and genocidal with it's own Russian populations in Donbas and Luhansk without quelling it? This war was provoked by NATO extreme expansionism and war mongering. Lockheed and the other arms companies were lobbying the head of NATO hard for this bloodshed. America pumped $5 billion into backing a coup to replace Ukraine's democratically elected pro-Russian government with an anti-Russia government. Ukraine violated the tenets of their 2014 Minsk agreement, and didn't even hold a meeting with the oppressed Donbas and Luhansk regions that they said they would treat better. Islamic Republic of middle east
Since the dawn of time, greed has sowed indifferences among humans which then culminate into groups of people with different ideologies thus creating never ending conflicts where each one of them try to outplay other through violence or power. Its sad how such great civilizations falls prey to victim of foreign powers thus proving the point that humanity is never united!
This is the true decline and fall. From king of kings 2500 years ago to a primitive theocracy at a time when the human condition enjoys unprecedented prosperity
Do you guys think the U.S and Britain are to blamed for this whole mess that allow such a revolution to happen in the first place? P.S: If Star Wars looked for inspiration from the Islamic Revolution in Iran as a way to topple a galactic government, will it be a great movie?
No, I don't believe it was their duty to rule Iran (and with an iron fist at that) and that's essentially what would be necessary to prevent such a thing from happening. However they definitely contributed to the problem, basically giving a reason upon a reason for anti-western and anti-governmental sentiments, stoking the flame of revolutionary movements of all kinds. Their decisionmakers' incompetence and lack of understanding of local realities was really jarring to me when I first learned of this stuff
@@Sk0lzky > I don't believe it was their duty to rule Iran Persians never wanted the UK and US to meddle in their country in the first place. None of the west's victims have.
@@I.____.....__...__ I like how he said that too😊
@@Sk0lzky I love your comment. The only thing is that, I think the revolution was organic and homegrown. Meaning. Those in support of an Islamic Government were the "majority" and judging back in time. It has benefitted the Islamic World. In the sense that, it gave them a reminder of how a nation can prosper and develop all the while, withholding their Islamic governing system. Iran's rate of expansion has undoubtedly been hindered by the constant threat of being militarily confronted. As a result, Iran has had no choice but to increase spending on their defense budget rather than provide It's citizens with more social services. The westernized population will always think the grass on the other side of the fence is greener but in reality, there aren't that many shortcomings for a nation under constant threat. Moving forward, it would be nice to see ties between Iran and the rest of the Islamic world, strengthen and for other countries to use Iran as a role model.

Iran's role in the history of Islam was extremely important in all aspects. The so-called Greater Iran was the cultural, religious, economic and military heart of the Islamic world for centuriesand when I say the Islamic world I mean the Sunnis since Iran was mostly Sunni from the time Islam entered it until the 16th century AD and most of Muslims were and are Sunnis , but the Mongol invasion and especially Iran's conversion to Shiism changed everything As for the current Iranian mullahs' regime, it is built on a Shiite doctrine that say that the jurists are the representatives of the Mahdi in power as long as he is absent, so they possess all his absolute authority, and the mullahs’ regime was tolerated by the West despite the problems it causes to the West because the West knows that a fanatical Shiite regime will cause the Islamic world, which is mostly Sunni, more problems than it causes to the West, All the West does with the Iranian regime is to protect itself from its threats but without overthrowing it, because the extremist Shiite Iranian regime is an effective weapon against Muslims
Imagine if iran becomes Sunni tomorrow. Imagine the rise of Iran as undisputed leader of islamic civilization(globalist rebel to western civilization).. Iranians ruined their future by becoming Shia in a ocean of Sunnis 🤡
@@Intellectual_fascist Since the introduction of Islam to Iran, the Sunni sect has been dominant, and Greater Iran, which extends from eastern Turkey to Tajikistan, has been the economic, intellectual and military heart of the Islamic world, but at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Ismail Shah Al-Safavi took advantage of the state of chaos that existed in Iran and was able to subjugate it and He imposed Shiism by the sword, and thus Iran lost its role in the Islamic world, which was and still predominantly Sunni
