  • To get off topic, can we give Boys to Men their flowers. They were the most successful male group in the 90s and Billboard crowned them #4 most successful music act of the 90s decade outranking Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. Additionally Boys to Men were the world's greatest selling male group of all time at one point. Plus Boys To Men is still the #1 most successful male group on The Billboard Hot charts since 1990 outcharting Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, One Direction and BTS. Yet Pop Culture stills overrate every male group over Boys To Men 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑 Oh and to know how competitive the 90s were (#1 Mariah Carey, #2 Janet Jackson, #3 Whitney Houston, #4 Boys To Men, #5 Celine Dion, #6 Madonna, #7 TLC, #8 Toni Braxton, #9 Garth Brooks, #10 Michael Bolton). Michael Jackson, Brandy, Britney Spears, Shawnia Twain, Alanis Morrisette, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, And Spice Girls didn't even reach the top 10 and they too had blockbuster success in the 90s.

    • I think it’s the fact the b2m don’t have much cultural relevance, the weren’t really Part of a movement. The best way i can describe it is any other r&b act could’ve sang those songs and it have the same result, likewise b2m didn’t have the global reach these teen boy bands did, I’m from Ireland our music runs hand in hand with the uk and most of Europe and I can tell you wayyyyyy more people can recognise and name the teen boy bands and their songs over b2m, obvi they were v successfull, they just didn’t make a big impact to last in pop culture. • I would love to know how chaotic their fandoms would've been if today's social media was around at the time. (Yes, I know the internet was just beginning it's boom during the 90s and early 00s but it was still new). It's no secret how political these two bands were amongst their fandoms. If you were around during the time and enjoyed the genre, you *had* to chose just one band and ride with them. It was almost impossible to like both (which is funny to think about). My mom was a total NSYNC girl (she loved Chris specifically), and despite liking Backstreet Boys her loyalty rode with NSYNC. It makes us laugh whenever we talk about it. There was also another time on MTV'S Total Request Live where Carson Daly had two teams (Backstreet Boys fans vs NSYNC fans) compete against each other. When the NSYNC team won, a girl from the Backstreet Boys team threatened Carson Daly AND the NSYNC team because she was upset her team had lost. These bands were HUGE and would close down literal streets due to the amount of fans showing up to support them (Just like MTV's Total Request Live had a special to promote Millennium and fans flooded the streets of New York). Fans would despise the girls the boys would date (including Britney Spears when she opened up for NSYNC. She had a cupcake thrown at her and was boo'ed. This was when Baby One More Time was released as a single). My mom also remembered how fans got so upset when Justin shaved off his hair too! I think it's interesting to see how "stans" were just as chaotic then as it is today, but imagine how much bigger it would've been if today's technology was around for that era.

    • I was going to comment on Black & Blue. BSB sold over 130M albums worldwide and I'd argue that NSync had more popularity at the tail end of the boy band wave but that is because BSB took a break. NSync sold very well of course but they never quite reached the same level as BSB--they definitely seemed more popular in the states though. BSB still tours as a group. I like both groups but BSB was first and had a much harder way to go legally they had to pay out a lot of money whereas NSync did not have to pay as much because their true success came after they left Lou! • @@eguyatt6813 I think if we’re going by first albums alone it’s actually pretty even on both ends of most to least leads sung. Brian and AJ, do have the most but Nick is actually only a few leads behind them while Joey and Chris sing even parts to Kevin and Howie. It’s the only album where that’s the case as then Nsync focus more on Justin and JC and poor Lance only gets to showcase his vocals twice and then never again on their follow up albums. For BSB it’s the opposite Kevin and Howie start to have more leads each album, especially their last 6 albums. Having JC and Justin sing 90% of their entire catalog kinda makes sense and sad for the other guys because they can sing quite well. I think having that extra lead vocalist in AJ, Brian and Nick definitely makes a difference and when Kevin and Howie do their parts, also they have so many songs where all five sing lead vocals. Nsync has I think two overall. They definitely didn’t showcase each individuals voice quite like Backstreet Boys do and have but both are great in their own ways.

  • It would have been nice to acknowledge that New Kids on the Block themselves were created as a copy of and direct competition to New Edition and was created by the former manager, Maurice Starr, who they fired after receiving a paycheck of 0.67 cents to split between the 6 of them. Just a brief one sentence would have been nice just because New Kids on the Block wasn't just meant to be competition to New Edition but to ERASE them (cause their former manager had a vendeta) and he seems to be succedding. Everyone credits New Kids on Block for modern boybands when they weren't even the originals. I am not sure if I would say that the rivalry is what pushed into international stardom because both groups gaijed fame internationally without their rivalry BEFORE coming to the US. It was only in the US that the rivalry was beneficial.

Plus, although All Saints had the best selling single in the UK for many years and broke Spice Girls record once the Spice Girls had a way much bigger success internationally (hits and albums). All Saints were quite successful in the UK but not so much elsewhere. Backstreet Boys vs *NSYNC is a different subject, they came to a point in which they were head to head, even though BSB still remains overall the best selling boy group with the most global hits hence the most successful.
