  • Thanks for this timely video! We just finished treating 3 ram lambs for coccidia and have been looking at options for prevention! Any suggestions on options for mixing if we don’t have a mixer like you use?

    • Hello, Emily. Thank you so much for watching our videos, it is greatly appreciated. We just hate telling people to buy equipment, especially with an uncertain economy. We appreciate how tight the budget is on most farms (including ours). When we first started mixing our own feed, I did it in a wheel barrow with a shovel and I finally broke down and bought a cement mixer. There are fancy feed mixers that work well but a cement mixer (new or used) will be your best value. It’s really important to mix in your medication evenly and I just haven’t found a way to do it without the mixer. I bought ours at Harbor Freight years ago and it was very reasonable (they always have sales and coupons). I would also check out any online options near you as well such as Craig’s list or Facebook Marketplace. I have an for making a mixer with a barrel but I haven’t quite figured it out yet. I will keep you posted.

    • Hello, Shaun. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a message and thank you for the question. Coccidia is an issue most farms experience regardless of environment. Many people think this is a cleanliness issue and it’s not (although it does help!). We advise starting ewes and does on medicated feed around 30 days prior to lambing or kidding to help clean them up and prevent shedding coccidia and exposing offspring. Likewise, we like to provide medicated feed to our lambs and goats through their creep feed as well. This is a daily medication and acts well as a preventative. Coccidia is one of the top causes of death and poor growth amount lambs and kids. Although we understand medications aren’t right for everyone, we hope you will read more about coccidia and consider providing protection for your farm. 👍🏻

    • We normally feed ewes and does 30 days prior to birthing through weaning. Creep feed for babies is medicated at least through 2 weeks post weaning.
