Space and Practicality:
One of the X-Trail's strongest suits is its spacious interior. The second row offers ample room for three adults, and the optional third row can accommodate smaller passengers for short journeys. However, the cargo area falls behind class leaders like the Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008, with less overall capacity when the rear seats are folded down.
Performance and Driving Dynamics:
The X-Trail's sole petrol engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit, delivers adequate performance around town but struggles under harder acceleration, emitting an unpleasant droning noise. The available hybrid powertrains offer improved refinement and better fuel economy, but they are similarly noisy when pushed.
On the road, the X-Trail provides a comfortable and composed ride, with well-controlled body roll and light but direct steering. However, it lacks the agility and engaging driving dynamics of some rivals, feeling more like a family hauler than a true driver's SUV.
Fuel Economy and Emissions:
The X-Trail's fuel economy figures are decent but not class-leading. The mild-hybrid petrol variant returns up to 39.9 mpg, while the full hybrid models can achieve up to 47.3 mpg. Emissions range from 134 to 164 g/km CO2, depending on the powertrain and seating configuration.
Safety and Technology:
Nissan has equipped the X-Trail with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward emergency braking, blind spot warning, and lane departure warning as standard. Higher trims also offer the ProPilot semi-autonomous driving system, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance.
Verdict:
The 2024 Nissan X-Trail is a competent and well-rounded family SUV that offers plenty of space, a comfortable ride, and a good selection of features. However, its lackluster performance, uninspiring driving dynamics, and relatively small cargo area prevent it from truly standing out in a highly competitive segment. While it's a solid choice, many buyers may find more compelling alternatives from rivals like Skoda, Peugeot, and Hyundai.
