Valentina Shevchenko vs Alexa Grasso was a shocking upset finish for Grasso, who intelligently captialized on Shevchenko's spin. How did Grasso's southpaw switch get her the win?

Grasso broke the matrix when she defended Val's crucifix.
Massive Respekt for Grasso. Underdog like Moreno was in his first shot but came in perfectly prepared not only doing the work in the gym but also forcing herselve to fight smart with fully tailored gameplan for Shevchenko

Valentina’s most iconic weapon, her spinning heel kick lost her the title. Mad ironic. Not taking anything away from Grasso, she exploited that situation perfectly.
It's because it iconic that it lost her the title. Every knows about someone will game plan for it.
Or as the saying goes: you live by the sword, you die by the sword.
Throwing too many spinning moves is risk against anyone with a good RNC.
How is it ironic?
You need to look up the definition of the word. English might not be your first language so I’m not trying to be mean but that explanation is not ironic.
This is underselling Alexa a bit. By the third round Shev no longer wanted to strike with Alexa. Shev was spamming takedowns & more importantly when shev got them she was no longer taking risks to end the fight but was content to lay/pray land small strikes and win the round & point. Alexa hit Shev harder than anyone had since Nunez 6 years ago in the first round but Alexa didn't realize Shev was a little hurt.
Very much this. Shevchenko got outstruck on the feet and resorted to a very defensive and ultimately predictable strategy of shooting for takedowns any time Grasso landed a combination on her. It worked a few times until Alexa was able to time it. Shevchenko was beaten, plain and simple.
@@Snake_holiday Who is handling these UFC stats ffs 84 to 59 for Shevchenko on significant strikes officially but all fight I saw Grasso piecing up Shevchenko and turning her into a wrestler and then eventually beating her up there aswell lol.
This exactly.. also shev was a bit disarmed.. and did risky takedowns but failed..also unmasked.. no set ups from shev
@@bloodbath3658 their sig strikes are utterly worthless stats.
Nothing new, the weasel sold out volk too, volk would have got out of this choke lol
A lot of people thought this fight would be hard for Alexa Grasso because she is all-round competent rather than being a specialist with one thing that might knock Valentina Shevchenko over. It turned out that being good at both grappling and striking, being coachable, and being patient was a world championship winning combination. Bravo!
As a mexican I can't describe how insane I got when this happened 🇲🇽❤

She closed that gap, something no other opponents ever did! Yes it was lightning fast, incredible. She cranked that neck, and one forearm was tight against the left side of VS neck. The key as you stated, which she showed at the ceremonial weigh ins, was southpaw.
Gap. Span. Nice dig.
Dude when they separate its crazy seeing the massive white band around her chin where her arm was
Grasso timed that takedown insanely well. She drilled that exact maneuver.

That was an absolute shocker. Brilliant work by Alexa Grasso. I hope we get to see the rematch as soon as possible. I would love to see how that plays out.
Big Valentina fan but also like Grasso very much. Hard to see either lose but I am happy for Grasso. Years of hard work and good prep paid off in a win over one of the best in womens' MMA.
@@williammoore4380 With Erin and Tatiana on the fringes, the bullet has now found the competition she's been waiting for. Plus Santos is still there.
My hat is off to both spectacular ladies. VS, graceful & highly skilled, although she hasn’t looked her old self in her last 2, fights, look forward to her rematch, such an icon. Congratulations, to Grasso who didn’t let negative ratings effect her confidence, so mentally strong & really focused, excellent skill level. I like both ladies, may the best fighter prevail in rematch, these ladies are ferocious competitors, I wish them all the best, they really have heart- they come to fight! 💯👏🏾👍🏾😃
Can I ask why? Why do you want an immediate rematch? An immediate says Alexa doesn’t deserve to be champ. Valentina should earn her title shot. That’s why I personally hate the rubber match. It does nothing for the division.
Amanda Nunes got the rematch got her belt back. Valentina will adjust and do the same
Alexa Grasso did her research. She studied how Jackie Justice exposed Valentina's weaknesses.
Decades from watching combat sports has taught me something, never underestimate a Mexican fighter.
That's got to give you confidence of Yair Rodrigeuz's chances against Alexander Volkanovski.
Her record is 17-3. The only ones underestimating her are the fake odds-makers.
Seeing the odds still at +1000 after the second round was really confusing. It was clear that Valentina was not able to go strike for strike with Grasso after round one. I guess the odd makes saw something I didn't because Grasso was piecing Valentina with her boxing.
Those betting odds are a way for the ufc to try to convince people that the fighter they want to win is winning, so people don’t get upset when the other fighter loses.
Heavy favorites always have weird live odds. Besides it wasnt that she didnt want to strike with her, it was that she didnt need to strike with her. She saw that she could spam the td if grasso was in southpaw and made the adjustment, until grasso also counter adjusted in the 4th. She already started off as a -800, looked like she was winning rounds 2 and 3 dominantly which is why she had such a heavy live price. And finally, sometimes odds have to get exaggerated by the bookies coz theres heavy action coming in on one way and they need money to come in on the other fighter so they can make money either way.
Honestly I thought Valentina was winning pretty convincingly but grasso definitely had some big moments before the submission
*No she wasn't she had a little more power but Valentina was landing more*
Yeah, I had grasso round 1
Intelligence is an important part of this sport. The top fighters analyze and dissect, really study their opponents and then adjust for them. The Grasso team was excellent.
That discoloration was insane!
wow i didn't realize how technical this was the way grasso set this up with her stance and distance. this is even better than i originally thought which i didn't think was possible. nice breakdown weasel
Grasso is my favorite female fighter now, for the simple fact that she had an actual gameplan and was able to execute and stick to it
She did it to absolute perfection 💯
Reminds me of when TheWeasle made UFC 269 prediction video and barely gave a minute when started talking about Amanda vs Pena , the upset happened , did the same thing for the prediction video of UFC 285 and same thing happened , crazy sport man
Lol, I l picked Peña and Grasso.
Yeah he was a tad disrespectful to Grasso's chances. Even I thought she had a better shot than the odds were giving it and the first round pretty much confirmed that this was not going to be a squash match by any means.
@@Zach-ls1if pena in the rematch? grasso in the rematch too?
@@fmcdomer no I had pena in the first fight. I think Grasso should be a slight underdog in a rematch.
Being a huge Valentina fan i was rooting for her but never been happier seeing the Underdog win (well...except Leon Edwards :D ) Grasso did not get overwhelmed by Bullet's aura and resume, her boxing was crisp and she was always in her face which allowed her to grasp on the opportunity to snatch the back. Rematch will be interesting, may be the pressure of holding the belt for so long got to Bullet. As a contender it will be exciting contest!
The queen was dethroned. Like nunez next fight will be different
She will win it back. She got complacement cause she was levels ahead when she knocking out Eye and Andrade.
"...may be the pressure of holding the belt for so long got to Bullet." I doubt that long-reigning Valenrtina felt pressure the same way that one would expect Alexa did. Complacency is more likely, in my opinion. But my feeling is that Alexa simply prepared better.
Like so many athletes on a winning streak, I think she just got a little complacent. One would think that almost losing her previous fight against Santos would have woken her up but apparently not. In fact, I think Valentina earned her win against Santos as much as Amanda earned her win in the second fight against Valentina; that is not at all. But like Amanda, I think Valentina will come back from the loss in a dominant fashion. As much as I love these top-level fighters, that they can occasionally be beaten is good for the sport. Who knows Grasso has been shown to be a very intelligent fighter who has been improving unbelievably by making her weaknesses (grappling) turn into strengths so she might surprise everyone and defend her title.
One thing I don't really see people mentioning which I got to give credit to Grasso for was her ability to adjust her grip with the choke in the fight. She had it under the chin in a sort of rear naked choke grip then she adjusted it to a fulcrum grip to get more pressure on the chin. Then she slowly slid her arm through back into the rear naked choke position, but with much more pressure applied from the change of grips.
A lot of dominant champions who run through thier respective division lost lately in a very unexpected way. Usman, Adesanya and Shevchenko all of them are winning untill a sudden turn of events happen. This is why i love watching mma full of suprises
A lot of $$$$ on the line, too! Especially with all of the legal betting apps! I hope the sport is not becoming corrupt!
Nunes losing to Peña was a massive shock too.
FULL OF SURPRISES AND FIXES
@@dgillian183 LOL. THERES A RECENT ARTICLE WHERE RAMPAGE CONFIRMS FIXES ARE STILL A THING.
@@bdmc6583 MORE LIKE A MASSIVE FIX
It felt like Valentina didn't set anything up except for her takedowns and Grasso later on knew that it was her win con so she managed to take advantage of her holes in the standup. Grasso fought that beautifully, curious to see if Valentina comes back and shows that dominance again.
She pretty much never sets anything up. She dominates because of how shallow female divisions are. Any of the very few higher level opponents and she has big problems, point fights in extremely safe and boring fights. Glad she lost so maybe the heavy over-hype will lessen.
This so much. The point fighting on the ground with the little slaps was bananas. Once, she said to the crowd after one of her boring fights “sorry for boring fight, I score points, I keep belt.” To me Valentina hasn’t improved at all over time and I suspect doesn’t prepare for specific fighters much. All I see is the same 5 moves being done at every fight. Reminds me of a mortal kombat character winding up and shaking in place until enough energy is gathered to throw a move. Not much head or lateral movement if at all. Anyway having a game plan with contingencies is all it takes to pierce the mythology that people like Rogan perpetuate. Much like it happened to Ronda, who could “fight and win against half of the male roster” or some silly notion like that
NAH SHE SETS THINGS UP AT TIMES. ALEXA HAS GREAT BOXING, BUT THIS WAS A FIX IF I EVER SEEN ONE. REMINDS ME OF NUNES V PENA 1. VAL WAS BASICALLY DOING NOTHING.
Alexa looked really fluid against Valentina. She actually escaped bottom position.
Damn, I didnt see that coming. I underestimated Grasso. Wow that neck attack was instant
THEE FASTEST!!!!!! Homegirl on point! 🎯
Lightning fast! Very impressed over here!
Awesome breakdown, thanks👍 But this narrative about Valentina only losing because one mistake is a bit misleading. Alexa got round 1 and even if she didn’t finish Valentina with the choke you have to think she would have gotten round 4 also, making it 2 rounds each going into the 5th. What an awesome and competitive fight, congrats to Alexa Grasso !
Grasso was definitely not winning majority of rd 4 she was swinging at air most of that round and kept getting countered.
Clueless
I can't believe how fast she snatched the back. That was blinding fast.
Grasso’s boxing really surprised me I have always been a fan of hers but I don’t think anyone was expecting her to outbox valentina

@Alex Mendoza lowkey that hurts a**hole but you're right tho
A lot of time went into figuring out Valentina's style, technique, timing, tactics, and strategy. Valentina will have to change everything before they meet again. This happens to every great champion. After many fights, you have given your opponents much to study and analyze. If you do not constantly 'change it up' and keep growing and developing as a fighter, this outcome is inevitable.
Well, I think the exception is Khabib. His opponents know that his main strategy is to grapple and drag you to the ground for an ass whooping. Each of his opponents who challenged him for the belt knew his tactics, yet were unable to stop him from finishing them.
@@riceburner888 Khabib was more of a well-rounded fighter than he gets credit for. His standup, for example, was very good and because he was not weak in any areas, it enabled him to go to his strongest areas. If he had not been so strong all around, many of the outcomes would have been different. Khabib did not allow himself to become stagnant. He was an awesome fighter.
Grasso has been putting in work. Beautiful to see her win 🏆
Put some respect on Alexa Grasso's name!
Valentinas comments were weird after playing it off as "one mistake", grasso looked phenomenal and was outstriking bullet, i gave her the first. Good fight.
I give Alexa props for capitalizing on that spinning kick but besides a couples of good punches in the first round she was losing the fight..
Well she did avoid getting in extended exchanges were grasso had success. For most of the fight, she kept grasso at distance with her jab or closed with the double leg. Grasso perfectly capitalized on the spinning kick but she'll probably aim for more own initiative in the rematch
I can see where it was "one mistake" because like Grasso said they trained to capitalize on that move, and capitalize she did! Don't get me wrong Grasso was amazing, but if it truly wasn't "one mistake" we'll see in the rematch
@@voodjinshe did what grasso wanted her to do in the end. Alexa just kept going forward and caused Valentina to make that mistake.
@@gerardo.b3026 I think most of it was just the fact that Grasso came out as a southpaw wich neutralized a lot of Valentina's body kicks, she wasn't prepared for that, she will be in the rematch, let se how it goes..
When Shevchenko failed that spinning kick, it gave me an instant flashback of when Chris Weidman failed a spinning kick against Luke Rockhold.
Lucky for her she didn’t eat like 1000 unanswered ground and pound punches.
@Y Nerf Conor losing to Nate wasn't much of a surprise. Conor was getting beat up by Chad Mendez when they got to the ground. Conor doesn't have much ground game.
Love this, you can tell how many fighters get very comfortable with their fighting stile and stop studying the opponent. On the other hand, grasso did a lot resesrch and strategy wich ultimately gon her the fight
She's not getting nearly enough credit or coverage. What an upset. Great boxing and timing. 🇲🇽
Idk why people are surprised. Alexa was champion material since the beginning. She just needed to refine her skills a bit and this is the result. Viva Mexico!!! Ya somos tres!!!

Nah Valentina was scared to fight after she got cracked in R1. Alexa was doing more damage in some instances even when Valentina was on top just doing the usual Lay n pray rubbish.
Did not see this happening! Good for Grasso! Crazy technique and execution. What a gameplan from her coaches!
Fantastic analysis!!! Some people are saying Shevchenko made a mistake, but I agree with you I thought this was all about strategy. Grasso was waiting on the spinning kick. Grasso and her team did a great job preparing for this fight.
Stellar work as usual, Weasle. Thanks for the breakdown.
Grasso team got this victory they studied her well and that southpaw stance really gave her difficulty it's good for Valentina as it will only make her more hungry and eventually improves her skills as an martial artist ...we could say that one move cost her but the way grasso was fighting she was not tired she was touching Valentina nd she won almost all the exchanges , Valentina looked lost as she thought that she woupd use her mua thy but grasso almost nullify it ... Her team did it for her and she deserves it I hope she wins the rematch and fight against blanchfield

About time for Alexa to start having more success with her submissions. Most people think of her as a boxer/striker especially for being mexican, but she actually became an MMA fighter after she succeded in a BJJ competition, so her ground skills didn't come out of nowhere and she proved it in the biggest stage of her career
When a fighter has a tendency, and the other fighter notices, and capitalises on it , that's smart fighting. That's what happened. No one is invincible. Alexa fought the right fight was waiting for that moment. She also engaged her, instead of reacting, and fighting afraid. I'm glad she won.
Great breakdown. I have never heard "span" used as the past tense of spin but you made it work.
Good coaching, but we have to give Alexa most of the credit because it was her particular set of skills, instincts, and timing in the cage that pulled off her team's game plan. This was actually a tough one for me because I'm a fan of both ladies.
No you have to her camp just as much credit. They drilled this and Alexa has won before off the same move against JoJo
Same, I love Valentina and have been watching Grasso since her Invita FC days.
If you go back and look at some of grassos fight her grappling has been shockingly amazing even though she only had one submission her grappling has been so fast and technical

This was pretty awesome to see live
This is high level prep for a title fight. Absolutely brilliant movement and recognition by Grasso. The fight up to that point was very close and I would not mind seeing this one, again.
I had a feeling about this fight, I had a feeling that everyone was underselling Grasso. I had a feeling she’d win just like this. She’s simple but extremely fast with a clean southpaw 1-2. I had a feeling Valentina would throw something unorthodox and would pay for it. Sometimes being a bit more one dimensional but very sharp and calculated pays off.
Amazing viva Mexico 🇲🇽 Aztec warrior blood we have good win even I didn’t give her nothing more than punching chance but after first round very evident grasso was cautious, smart, methodical, composed never panicked stuck to the game plan throughout the fight
Damn, your assessment of this fight is absolutely phenomenal man! Everything you pointed out was on point. Props to you and your channel
Had it 2-1 for Bullet going into the 4th. By that point, I could tell Grasso was going to break away. Valentina was tired, and looked lost on the feet. Grasso came out defending the takedown and shooting her own takedowns in the 4th. Grasso was the better, fresher fighter. If she learns to defend td’s I think she starches Blanchfield. Blanchfield needs a lot of work on the feet, and Grasso is reaching new levels with her striking.
I always shed a tear 😢 when this type of stuff happens. Good job Grasso ❤️
It's kind of refreshing to see all these new champs recently 💯
Genius finish by Grasso. I knew she was game and imo was 50/50.

I was believed that she can win!!! She was so calm!!!
Grasso and her teams game plan was nails. It caused Bullet to be off her game. It was like Valentina just took Alexa as another victim, like she didn't prepare or game plan rightly for Grasso. Valentina was a step behind all night and her natural talent and fighting spirit weren't enough on this night. All credit to Alexa Grasso, well played- the new UFC Women's Flyweight Champion.
How was she step behind the whole fight? Not taking away from Alexa’s performance. But Val was winning the fight prior the submission. She won she was up 2-1 at the 3rd round.
@@davon7100 She was a step behind in the standup game to be sure.
@@aclockwisevortex32 you’re making it sound like it was TJ Dillashaw vs Barao 2. Stand up was very competitive and Val did land a nice head kick that stunned Alexa in the fight and the snapping jab was landing on Alexa nearly the whole fight. Big shots didn’t come that often for either fighter.
@@davon7100 so then why was the bullet looking to shoot immediately. The bullet was winning yes but she also knew that boxing with Grasso wasn’t sustainable for her that’s being a step behind because the bullet didn’t hide it she went straight for it and it worked for a round then Grasso caught on and stuffed her. And Grasso throws hands! By round three, shevchenko didn't want to box her anymore and started shooting more and more. And you're right, Grasso was the superior boxer here. Subscribing to your channel. Great stuff
Alexa had so many distance problems with her striking but when she did get it right it seemed to have a strong impact on Shevchenko.
It was a beautiful submission.
Thanks for the debrief; but did you use the word "span" for the past tense of the word "spin"?
Nobody was betting a peso for Alexa, Not even thinking she was going to submit her. Even if her reign as champion is just for a few months she already make history 💚
I think Shevchenko’s last few fights have shown she’s quite predictable, and is slowing down a touch imo. I’m a massive fan of hers, but had £2 on Grasso to win by submission for those reasons. This was a throwback to the cursed spinning wheel kick Chris Weidman threw against Luke Rockhold.
Just like in the Santos fight, Valentina has a bad habit of giving up her back. And Alexa Grasso capitalized on it.
And the unfortunate thing is this might end up becoming the blueprint for everyone to beat her. If she loses the rematch to Grasso but doesn't retire, I can foresee a fall from grace...
Fight as you train, Train as you fight.
It’s going to fun to see Grasso improve her take down defense and get better.
I’m so glad to see some change in the weight class. Congrats to Alexa. I hope that Alexa can defend
This was a good performance by Alexa and a great win her boxing looked crisp and made Valentina go for wrestling. Alexa's wrestling did not look good though, if she wants to win the rematch she needs to train it more and add more muscle to her frame also this was not a fluke win, Valentina made a mistake and Alexa capitalized on it and got the win but again I favor Valentina in the rematch to win and my scorecard was like this round 1-Grasso 10-9, round 2-Valentina 10-8, round 3-Valentina 10-9 and round 4 I had Alexa winning it till the stoppage overall congratulations Alexa you deserve and I had a feeling we would see an upset often times in the UFC we have seen fighters go for records and history and fail and this was supposed to be Valentina's 8th ruby for her belt and she lost it must hurt a lot I feel bad for her.
Grasso is the only one I can remember that got out of Val's crucifex and the only one not to get head and arm thrown.
@@alansteel Yeah I think she was the only one who got out of it but I think she didn't get thrown mostly because there was barley any clinching and Valentina was blasting single and double legs she didn't really try to throw anything and I was surprised how well Grasso handled the kicks from Valentina.
yea the rematch is gonna be fascinating because you have to wonder is shevchenko the kind of fighter who adjusts to an opponent or just trains to their own style and techniques without taking the opponent so much into account - and then for grasso do they then assume shevchenko will adapt and so they readapt to show something new or do they stick with what worked and possibly get outmaneuvered if shevchenko adapts? aaaagh I love this kinda chess match game planning SO COOL!
Surprised how caught off guard Shevchenko's corner was. Didn't really get much translation so maybe they were adjusting, game planning well in the breaks and Valentina just wasn't following/executing? Such a clever fight by Grasso. It's chess not checkers.
Shevs corner told her to go to simple punches as she was losing the exchanges in the beginning. Seemed like shev was running out of weapons once the takedowns started being neutralised
Awesome performance by Alexa grasso I wonder if it's safe to say the valentina era is over. Considering Valentina was gonna cruise to a W because of control time let's me know Alexa may be here for a while.
I believe it´s over for prime Val, she can win fights if she stays, but days of her dominance has gone.
