One of the world's oldest cultures: bushmen | WIDE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

In the lands of Southern Africa reside one of the oldest peoples in humanity: the bushmen. Largely hunter-gatherers, bushmen’s territory extends over several nations in Southern Africa, which they have called home for tens of thousands of years.
This documentary follows the descendants of the bushmen in South Africa, many of whom have lost their connection to their ancestral roots. Their fight to preserve their tradition and to have their identity recognised continues.

    • This is exactly how I felt watching this documentary. When I was in University in the 80's one of my profs had lived among the San in the Kalahari for about a year or so. He spoke the language and everything, and he taught us a lot about their life. They lived on their land then, and now watching this film so many years later it is mentioned that all their land 'belongs to someone' and they cannot hunt on it. It is really sickening to witness the degradation of the modern way of life. all for what? profit? I dont know what to say, I do wish we see the light soon otherwise what is really human may simply be replaced by some sort of shallow pretense.

This ugly part of early interactions with the foreign migrant settlers from central Africa is almost taboo to speak of today . The cruel injustices suffered at the hands of the black tribes continue today . The black Bantu Nguni govt sidelines and ignores the original inhabitants even today , they are not quite black enough to benefit from affirmative action , BEE or social development programs . None of their languages are officially recognised , while all the black Ngunis are . The struggle of the first nation continues .

I am learning more about my country, South Africa and the boardering country of Namibia. I am South African of British/Dutch/French decent. This documentary states the 1st German concentration camp, but in Irene, Pretoria, South Africa we have an older British controlled concentration camp where the Boer women and children were kept captive by the British during the Boer war in the late 1800s. Germany wasnt the first people to use concentration camps. I had not known of the loses of the San people. This has not even been mentioned in our education system in our History classes, maybe because it is crossing a boarder it gets left out, but Namibia was part of South Africa until 1990. We teach about their medicine, society, nomadic life style, their fight for recognition, their culture being diluted into other tribes and groups but this masacar is new to me, There is so much to learn about the past.

    @YaYunus@YaYunus Жыл бұрын
    • San or Sanqua ok. Must admit the name Bushmen is one I know and respect. Salt of the eath people. So wise out of the soul of Africa. I love Bushmen (san) and they need to be protected. Bushmans are the rulers of SA lands. Missing their culture and life style in the bush. Bushmen afraid to be called primitive....one day when all is gone like we know it....the wiadoms of the buahmans will keep people alive. They are wisdom and that was life....now we rush for money only...it has brought allot of problems....

    • The name San is a derogatory name given to them by the Bantu people. Those Bushmen each had their own languages far more different from each other than most languages are today. In the 1930s there were 61 different Bushman languages in Botswana and by 1992 there were 9 left . A white farm girl grew up with one of them and they ended up as the only 2 people who could speak that language. Due to such great language differences they NEVER referred to their fellow hunter gatherers under one race name like San or Bushmen. They were too widely scattered and as I mentioned before their languages werent even related in some cases. They have the greatest genetic gene pool of diversity on earth, namely 30 % more than any other race on earth. They are related to the Pygmies of the Congo jungles. And a small remnant in Southern Tanzania. They once occupied the whole of Southern Africa alone until the Bantu moved in and either killed them or used them as slaves on the copper pits in Zimbabwe where they died within 2 years due to copper poisoning and malnutrition. I could go on but wont wasteyour time.

    • Thank you Michael for your informative input. To add my 2cents we can go on to disclose that "San" is a derogatory term which means 'a naked thief'. The more appropriate term in Khoekhoegowab is "Saab" and literally translates to 'Bushmen' as in the 'professors of the field'.

Could not even an ounce of respect be paid to indigenous people? They have suffered the same fate as in the US: colonization genocide alcoholism high unemployment and poor health as a result. Apartheid still existing in rural areas! And children being ashamed of their heritage means they (and adults around them) have internalize the racism of their colonizers..

Genetically through the pheno-type you see the rudimentary bases for all of humankind. If Africa could strip itself of the boarders, allowing the people to marry, there is no telling what that continent and it's people will be able to accomplish.

    • You know, times were different. Societies lived in an era where conquering other countries were the main goal. If you study history, of all countries, the super powers always supress the minorities. The Vikings did it, the Ancient Egyptians did the same, so did the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Gengis khan, etc. it was not only the Dutch, or the British, or the Portuguese or the French who suppressed Africa. What did the Spanish do in South America? They killed the Incas, the Aztecas, You know, we just have to go and understand that the past is the past, and we human beings are all evolving from our experiences. What those people did, was not right, but they did not know better. But they also did good things, so not everything was bad.
