  • As a 63 year old ever evolving woman, once I gave myself permission to allow my style to grow and change right along with me, my enjoyment of expression through fashion grew exponentially. There have been times in my life when I’ve been the suit to the office gal but there have also been boho long hair years or times when I really really loved hiking boots and button downs. Let yourself grow, change….just be!

    • I am newly retired (65) and did a closet reorganization to merge my "work" vs "casual" wardrobe and have purged off some fantasy and/or tool small or maybe some day clothing. Every hanger was turned backwards and I am proceeding to truly see what works for this new phase. I know I will continue to declutter and buy pieces (hopefully for travel)

  • I "hate" my wardrobe because I hardly ever buy new clothes. I don't know what my style is, so I just buy basics that get me somewhere, but I'd like to have a style like almost everyone else.

    • I can definitely relate! It's easy to become overwhelmed by all the options and sizes and just revert back to the basics haha but I've been learning, we all deserve to find a wardrobe or create a wardrobe we feel good in! Which is partly why I ended up watching this video I think haha! Praying you find a style and wardrobe that makes you feel amazing!!!

  • The biggest reason I hate my wardrobe is that nothing fits well and I bought a bunch of items for a body type I don’t have any longer. I’m refusing to buy the right size clothing because it’s expensive to replace an entire wardrobe and I’m in denial. 😂 The struggle continues.

    • How about you buy just even a few pieces that you'll know the moment you wear them you will feel amazing, just start with few not a whole wardrobe. It is so important that we wear clothes that look amazing on us now and not 10 years ago. You've got this!

    • SAME. I have found, though, that the old (pre-skinny jean era) advice to pick clothes that skim your body--not too tight or too loose--is just perfect for my bigger body. Better quality pants are a good investment, too. Flimsy pants show off every lump and bump. Good luck!

    • Is there an opportunity to alter some of the pieces you liked especially well to fit you again? Or make a new piece of clothing out of old and liked fabrics? It could bring back the joy of wearing them and would be super sustainable. Other ideas if the pieces are in good condition: organise a clothing swap with other people and/or sell your pre-loved items online to finance a new wardrobe. All the best!

  • I finally stopped shopping for my fantasy self by asking one question. Will I wear this tonight or tomorrow? I noticed that my husband, who has a great wardrobe, would almost immediately wear what he just purchased whereas I would rarely wear new items. I finally realized I was shopping for fantasy me whereas my husband was shopping for his real life.

    • My sister does the same thing. She has plenty of clothes which are new and she keeps them new in case “she has to go to see some relative or friend” and trust me, she hardly goes anywhere 😂. Whereas I wear new clothes if I want to. It’s okay to keep some clothes aside for special occasions but don’t wait much and wear them if you want to. 😊

  • I think my fantasy self just goes out a lot more than I actually do 😅 Whereas I mostly live in practical work clothes (physical labour, not office) or things that will work for being outdoors and around my horses. I like the idea of getting dressed even if you're not planning on going anywhere, I think that was from another video. I'm going to give it a try. Its very easy to just wear the same practical clothes every day and never get to wear my fun things.

  • My 2 main tips : Take a couple of hours to pre-prepare outfits out of what you have in your closet. Take pictures of the outfits you absolutely love (make sure you pair the WHOLE outfit, jacket and shoes included). Then wear the outfit out and edit the photos you took by adding a « score » out of 10 for example. After wearing all the outfits you’ll have a good idea of what not only LOOKS good’ but also what FEELS good Second tip is, if you wouldn’t pack it in your suitcase for a 2/3 week trip in Paris/London/New York/whatever city you’d dress nicely for if you were travelling, then pack that garment away. Don’t reach for it in the next 6/8 months ? Then you don’t need it 😉

  • I love the three word style definition and adore owning a limited capsule wardrobe. I just could never pull it off with the pieces that typically get recommended online (trench coat, blazer, jeans, loafers, etc.). To come into my own style, I had to learn to pick up the concepts without internalizing someone else’s “rules”.

  • Two big reasons for me: 1) I had clothes that no longer fit my body 2) some of my clothes did not fit the climate I live in now. Both made me feel inadequate and stuck. Not quite hating my wardrobe, but more hating my life - nevertheless, the clothes served as a reminder. Perhaps this also goes through some people's heads as they open their closets.

    @swiinka@swiinka Жыл бұрын
    • I can relate to this. I’m from Texas and came from an area where clothes are tighter and suited for a hot environment. But now I live in New York City where the climate is colder and the style is more relaxed so I’m often running around in tight jeans and short dresses and stuff thats just not in style here but I keep reverting back to that style when I go shopping because it’s just all I’ve ever known… so it’s like a loop of hating what’s in my closet.

      @rsvpevents6780@rsvpevents67807 ай бұрын
    • @@rsvpevents6780 I grew up in a climate with proper summer, then moved to Ireland where it's cold and rainy pretty much all year long. It took me years to change my programming and stop buying summer clothes when June lands, because summer here means that rain gets warmer 🤣 Now I have a hard time finding anything to wear if I go somewhere hot though.

  • I found I was the most discontent with my closet when I was in an ongoing shopping cycle. As I've slowed down on buying, I've been more selective when I buy something new, I've dedicated time to altering the clothing I already own, and I've developed a better understanding of my personal style. Another big one was focusing more on clothes/outfits that are practical for my day to day life.

  • I hated my wardrobe because I bought a lot of black pants, tops, shoes and bags. I've heard all my life how black clothing is timeless, goes with everything and everyone should own it because it's essential. While it may be true for many people I realized it's not for me. I freaking hate black, it's sad, dull, boring and overpowering. I got rid of everything black, now my wardrobe is full of white and pastels, I feel cute, alive and bright, everytime I have to go out it's such a fun experience to get dressed.

    @Dobby-1611@Dobby-16115 ай бұрын
    • Just move them out of the closet. You don’t have to get rid of everything yet. Keep only things that fit, then periodically look at your stored items to see if anything is working again. Saves time & cash. After a while, I have found that some items I don’t even like anymore, so out they go. And others surprise you; I found 5 things in a bin yesterday that fit again. (I’ve only lost about 10 pounds). Then, if you really need something or want to go to an event, just shop only for that and buy in your current size. If could always be altered down later if needed. Just something that has worked for me as I change sizes.

  • I think sticking with a color palette is very helpful, for so many reasons! It helps curb impulse purchases, it helps you make sure if you add something it will "go" with several items, you will feel good in colors you like/know look good on you, it's easier to shop resell when you can sort by a color palette, etc etc!

    @elikesstrawberries9886@elikesstrawberries9886 Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, this has been one of the most helpful things for me. I tend to love a warm palette and always feel off even when wearing neutral colors like gray and navy, but also hate wearing pinks and purples. I love beiges, camel and white for neutrals and love shades of orange as my favorite accent color. Learning this about myself makes shopping so easy I just stay away from my no no colors. 😊

  • It helped me to focus on building a comfortable wardrobe and one built on basics. In the past I didn’t give enough attention to basics which made it frustrating putting together outfits. Now most of my wardrobe is basics but I have a few gems in there that brighten it up. A few vintage pieces like sweaters or coats or dresses. And I’m a lot happier for it. And I stay away from polyester and now mostly buy cotton or natural fibers which helps for the comfort factor.

  • Great video! First two points are so me: I shop a lot for my fantasy self and buy a lot of clothes which are on the fancier side, whereas when it comes to getting dressed, my comfort is a top priority for me and I often end up reaching for the ride or die clothes in which I feel 100% comfortable. Secondly, my wardrobe is a mess and I often forget what’s actually in it. Storing clothes is a game changer. Your other points apply too:)

I need to let go of teenager me and embrace being in my late thirties and try some new styles... I just find clothes shopping really overwhelming and not enjoyable, so I've just been using what I have for so long now that it doesn't occur to me that changing things up could be really good for me and help my confidence too :)

  • Last summer I started making a capsule at the beginning of each month and it has helped address so many of the problems you are addressing. It doesn't take me that long and the benefits are well worth the effort. I am surprised at how much less shopping I've done. I think, for me, putting outfits together for 4 weeks is very doable. Seasonal capsules tended to be very large as I was trying to include pieces for every type of event that could come up, whereas I generally know what is on my calender for the upcoming month. It's also clearly showing me what I like wearing and that I do have plenty in the closet already. There are lots of other benefits I'm noticing, but this comment is getting too chatty, lol.

  • Thank you for making this video. You have touched every single point perfectly. It has been extremely helpful in my journey. My wardrobe has always been an issue. I went through many phases in my life and the choices of clothes that I would wear would reflect that. My closet was my happy place. It is still my happy place. While my world was falling apart around me, It was the only thing in my life that remained. The only thing that I had control of. And to this day it still feels that way. I decided a long time ago to get rid of the emotional baggage and that included a lot of my clothes. But reinventing myself has been even more difficult. Not only was I dealing with the anxiety of letting go of old things but also the acceptance of new ones. It’s truly a remarkable journey….

  • Thank you so much for this..I identified with the buying clothes that match up with my fantasy self, and also my fantasy 'going out to lunch' type of life. I do do that sometimes, but nowhere near enough for all the things that I've bought over the years to match that fantasy. I'm going to watch your video that talks about how do I feel when i wear certain things, because I've never really asked myself that. I am also glad that you're not talking about what else to buy to fix it...I have subscribed to your channel, and look forward to watching more of what you have to say.🌺🌻🏵

  • I love this video! And I agree, looking effortless does require time and getting to know your style! I try to own pieces in the same colors or tones so that they are interchangeable and I limit how many different colors and prints I own. So when I feel like I have nothing to wear I can blindly grab a top and bottom and it’s an instant outfit. Also, I don’t own lots and lots of jewelry instead I’ve invested in fine jewelry and fine jewelry statement pieces so they add a pop with each outfit AND will last for decades! I’ve also invested in quality footwear for every occasion, same with outerwear because those pieces can really change what would otherwise be a more plain or boring outfit. Good luck to everyone that is working on their personal style!

  • I just want to say thanks for making this. As soon as I got to the end of the "fantasy self" segment I had the motivation to go into my closet and take down and put away anything that isnt who I am right no. If I wasn't able to see myself wearing it in the next three months, it didn't need to be there. I then took out what i had packed away and compared it to what I had left, and what fit me now I kept out and then put the rest back. everything is in my favorite colors, shapes, fits, and fabrics

  • Hey Christina, I just wanted to say that I love how you go beyond just forming a style but also talk about matching it your personality, lifestyle and so on. I am just re-discovering this area in my life again, and I strongly feel that I am on a shopping obsession and style obsession because i feel so much uncertainty and lack of control in my other areas of life that I channel this control into making decisions about clothes. I will watch some videos that you made on your style journey and I already did and notices similar patterns. I would like to be reasonable about it and have benefits from it instead of just feeling guilty of wasting and not feeling well in my great clothes since they dont even match my financial situation right now. I guess I am trying to compensate my lack of certainty with buying. Again - thank you for your insights, it is very helpful! :)

  • The intro of this video resonated so much with me. I knew that having to get dressed in the morning had really been causing me hell in the start of my days & just ruining most of days since October. I even started having breakdowns recently around Christmas when that added stress really was too much but I didn't realize how bad it was until I started watching this video.

  • I 'am just now in my mid 40's and finally figuring out what my fashion style is. I have been dreading cleaning out my closet and switching over from winter to spring/summer clothes. After seeing a few new closet make over videos I am more motivated to do so. I am actually looking forward to getting it done. I never quite looked at it, in the way that you described it as to why I did not want to do it. But it makes perfect sense to me. So thank you for sharing this video.

  • Hi from Canada! New here. I'm 59, and I'm pleased you mentioned the whole mind set, expectations of others, the city or culture around you, the deeper things that definitely mold our wardrobes. Almost ALL of my friends in my age group have "rules" that were taught to them as children, from a different era. Things like "a nice girl doesn't wear a low cut", or "older ladies don't where mini skirts". A few of them were busy at home with child-raising and low income, and now they are comfortable in sloppy comfort clothes and don't know anything about clothing or makeup. With this video my first time here, I will def be sharing your channel with my friends. Much thanks! (now i have to go and watch the rest of yours! 😄). Have a great day.

I love what you say about the fantasy self and the freedom not to dress for others. Stylish sanity for all. Hot & good for the planet too! lol. Also - a subheading of dressing for others I’d like to mention- the male gaze, romantic partner pressures, various other kinds of signaling, fitting in to particular communities…thank you again. Feeling less afraid of my closet now, even with the mess it is!

I just resisted secret Sezane code of 20 off and instead of buying a beautiful cream cotton crochet sweater I looked in my closet and decided I already have a lovely vintage cotton sweater made in Ecuador that I found at my local antique mall and I don’t need another similar item despite how beautiful the Sezane one was. Thanks for your videos and advice 😊

  • Love this!! So cute and fun how you can go to the mirror and smile at yourself and what you've chosen to wear! Makes me feel like i can do that, too. Good points and makes me wonder about a couple of pieces in my closet and if they are really me. I haven't done research on the three words yet, but what came to mind for myself is simple, natural/nature, and free/comfy. I love to pull colors from nature into my wardobe and i know myself well enough to know i am not going to enjoy wearing clothes that are busy or bulky or too tight. I want to wear my clothes and feel free and comfortable even if im dressing up for a date or church. Thinking on those words definitely does offer a filter for my closet. If something is uncomfortable or too busy then thats a sign i may need to reconsider that piece for myself.

  • I'm a new subscriber and I'm glad I found your channel. I think this is by far the best video I have watched when it comes to wardrobe struggles.I'm in my late 20s now so I am bit more conscious about my figure and spending habits. I'm from Asia and very petite. I used to wear anything while living there but now currently residing in NZ where it's 4 seasons a day and the majority of people are on the taller or bigger build. I have been struggling to find my style and size since coming here. They dont have a lot of petite friendly brands and I do not like fast fashion so i spend a lot of money on sustainable clothing from Europe. I've been really frustrated about my fashion choices because it is a clash of my fantasy self and following all the rules. I am a sheep. I have taken down notes and will contemplate on these and hopefully slowly transition to my best version and personal style! Thank you very much !
