I forgot how to say provide in spanish and my friends still mock me until this day 😂 Feel you Ellen. I tend to code switch for expressions and certain situations. • My mom went deaf when I was 8. She woke up one morning and couldn't hear. Thought we were playing bad prank on her. She went into such a depressive state that she never wanted to learn asl. I was in 4th grade and tried to find a ride to school early so I could learn to sign in hopes to teach her. Unfortunately asl was not as easy of an elective language as it is now becoming. She only communicated by lip reading or drawing into her hand. She passed away 4 months ago and these holiday s are the first that she is not here. She was so sad all the time around this season but I always tried to make sure to talk with her to make her feel included. I love that you use your platform to raise awareness to this community ❤

  • For those that bring up the “I wish Sign Language was taught in school” - which I agree with - should read the book Language of Light by Gerald Shea. It’s about the history of Sign Language and how Oralists came to oppress it and come to understand why some of the reasons it’s not taught in in schools, except for the basics (hand spelling) and a few easily taught signs.

I know they won’t know what I’m signing but it helps me to verbalize my thoughts and I think it’s really cool the way my brain switches when it’s hard for me to hear my brain tells me “oh you can’t hear well, let’s see what you’re trying to say instead”

It has a very high chance of healing in a few months, but I had no signs of it and it was terrifying waking up not being able to move half my face. But watching you two always makes me happy and fills me with hope. The half of my face that works is overcompensating so it really hurts to talk so my boyfriend and I watch you guys and I use some signs with him since it's painful to speak. @thatukrainiann@thatukrainiann3 жыл бұрын
    • I feel like in sign language you would just pause, but I don't actually know. Like we do when we can't think of a word, we usually just pause until we think of it, or we just find a replacement, but maybe there's a designated sign for that.

    @ashacabaca@ashacabaca3 жыл бұрын
    • This is a great question! I'd be really curious to know too. I find that when I sign while speaking, I tend to use English structure more which isn't always completely correct in ASL.

      @WanderingIbis@WanderingIbis3 жыл бұрын
    • My guess she douse what Wandering Ibis does. When she is speaking and signing at the same time she is signing PSE which is basically using ASL signs but using English grammatical structure. It's difficult to sign with ASL when speaking because the grammar is different, so the words you are saying don't match up with the signs.

      @bhtv86@bhtv863 жыл бұрын
    • I can help. I would say yes because she is speaking two languages. When you sign and speak at the same time your signing usually gets very sloppy. Your ASL grammar is also messed up because people tend to sign word for word and ASL doesn’t work like that. When you sign your topic comes first but if you have time like today or this morning, then time comes first. Hope this helps you! It’s a great question and I hope Ryan answers it. He might give clearer information.

      @chloemckellar8493@chloemckellar84933 жыл бұрын
    • She's said in a previous video that she signs what she speaks in the same order only for videos so that people who are learning ASL can link the two words.

      @gnomie3908@gnomie39083 жыл бұрын
    • I notice that too! I wonder if she uses more ASL signed structure when she's not speaking while signing. It seems to me like she uses more Pidgin Signed English (or PSE) when she's signing and speaking at the same time (PSE is when you use signs from sign language but you usually use them in the English grammar structure).

      @isthisnametaken6618@isthisnametaken66183 жыл бұрын
  • I don’t think the person who asked the question meant “habit” in a derogatory way to imply sign language is like gesturing, but I understand why it’s a sensitive topic. I think they meant that since you seem to sign and speak English at the same time a lot from your videos, do you find it hard to just speak without signing or just sign without speaking, since you’re used to doing them at the same time. I get what you mean about the code-switching too. I know a lot of English & Spanish speakers and they rarely speak in pure English or Spanish, it’s usually Spanglish

    @celestialbunny12@celestialbunny123 жыл бұрын
    • Yes exactly! I too completely understand what she's saying as I speak a lot of other languages including English and we tend to use foreign words in an english sentence a lot! Honestly some times it's cause I can't remember the English word at that very second or sometimes it's out of habit. Anyway I hope she sees your comment cause I think this is exactly what the OP meant

  • In high school, I was in a class called leadership, where we went out and tried to help out in the community. I chose to go to the local elementary school that had a class for hearing impaired kids. I ended up learning quite a bit of sign language while there. Unfortunately I haven't stuck with it, so have only been able to retain so much from it. Now that I moved back to Germany a kid that lives down the street is deaf. Ive tried to sign to him a few times, but realised that only a few signs are the same in German as they are in English(I had studied signing exact English, and not ASL). Your channel is very wholesome, and I adore seeing the love that you have for each other, while educating this community about something so common that unfortunately seems to be overlooked. As for this video, I completely understand the `habit´ that isn't really a habit. I am fluent in English and German, and studied Japanese and Korean( both conversational but not fluent) with a bit of retained signs, and often, especially depending on whom Im talking with, I will notice that I switch languages mid sentence. Especially when I can't think of the word, but can think of it in a different language. Glad to see its a common thing. Anyways, I wish you three a very happy holiday season. Java was missed in this episode. I hope she is healing well. Sending love from Germany!

    • I have been learning ASL from a website called lifeprint.com. They have a 45 min video that you watch and then you can take a quiz. That is just for 1 lesson. They have 15 lessons for each course and then they have 2 courses and are working on a 3 course. They are completely free but if you want to take it as a foreign language class then you have to pay. But if you are just wanting to learn ASL I have found this website to be very helpful.

    • I realize you didnt ask me lol but, I took a year of asl in high school. From what I remember, once you know the alphabet, start finger spelling random objects or random names through out the day as your doing other things to build muscle memory. Then move on to common phrases. A fun project we did around this time of year, was translate our favorite holiday song into asl. Hope this helps!

    • @Camryn. I'm fluent in ASL too, and I agree Ryan and Ellen are great. I'd say the best you can do is just try to immerse yourself in Deaf culture and Deaf history. Just try and get involved it takes a lot of practice. As far as learning signs go I like the website Signing Savvy and Bill Vicars has a channel here on KZhead with some signing stuff. Ryan and Ellen have discussed this in a past video too but remember signs aren't the only part of it, facial expressions and body language are important too. Best of luck with learning!

  • Code switching is such an interesting concept. I have heard of it before and you described it really well. My friends who are bilingual say that sometimes they cannot think of the word in one language they will "fill" it with a word from the other language. Especially unique is they said there are some words with specific meanings that do not have a direct translation into English or do not exist in the English language.

  • I've studied linguistics as well and also how to teach English to nonnative speakers. I am so happy to know that you understand language development and fluency issues-- and can explain what happens when someone is learning or knows more than one language. You did a great job explaining the concept of code switching and why you don't simply switch languages for no reason (i.e. by habit). Good job, Ellen. Ryan: You are so informative as well. I love how you two add additional information or insight into what you each say. I'm learning so many new signs from both of you!

Hope you are having a good Morning/Evening/Night whatever time it is for you. And you’re videos are so.. heartwarming? I’m not sure what word to use but I’m glad to be a subscriber. • I noticed that you guys don't look at each other's hands when you guys are signing to each other. Do you use your peripheral vision to tell what they are saying? Happy holidays ❤

    • Yes! In sign language you use your peripheral vision to see the signs. You're supposed to keep your eyes on the person's face (like you normally would when have a conversation in a speaking language) so that you see any mouth morphemes, or facial expressions. :) It's actually the best way to view the signs because your peripheral vision (a little eye science here!) detects moving objects much easier than your central vision, so you would be able to see the signs and the movements easier than if you were looking directly at the person's hands. Hope this helps! ❤️

  • Love these videos so much. I've taken to trying to copy the signs you both do as a way to learn ASL and it's helping a lot. Seeing people use it in long sentences at the same pace as speaking is incredibly educational. It's a bit easier to follow Ellen's movements since she signs slower when speaking, but one day I hope to be as fast as Ryan. 💪💪Happy Holidays y'all! Stay safe!
