We made the world's heaviest mini sledge hammer out of tungsten carbide and bismuth for guaranteed nailing first try. We did some basic metal casting with green sand and used the 60,000 PSI waterjet to shape it into an epic hammer.

Torch the tungsten to warm it up, so the bismuth doesn't just cool down instantly when it touches
Exactly!
Maybe that's why it didnt set properly and left gaps.
same way you use boiling water for white sauce or caramel.
Hopefully he sees this before finishing the video
With the melting point if the two being vastly different however, it makes sense that tungsten is more often alloyed with nickel or iron.
You earned a genuine belly laugh with “I don’t know why people always tell me to do this, it’s not fun.”
Well someone's gotta pound sand might as well be him.
@@iwinrar5207 Honestly, I thought it was "touch dirt".
@@rumpelstiltskin6150 I thought that saying was touch grass? I think pound sand seems better here.
@@TownieFormal lol that is a nice variation
Took me a while but I got it
I think it’d be cool if they made a hammer (or something like it) with a bunch of big exposed bismuth crystals. It’d look like a cool video game item.
Aayyyyy Patrick 👋
Love your work, what's up, man.
It'd be like a one-time use item where you wallop something for incredible damage but the brittle bismuth shatters right after.
@@Monomiknose it would be used to hammer an extra large peg thing like in Kirby, to open a new area, then it would break,
I was just thinking we need a legendary supermutant carying this this

In my construction class in high school, our teacher kept a record on the board for most strikes to drive a nail into a 2x4. 160. Was the record. Took the poor souls a while before they realized they were nailing directly into a bolt. It's a class for a reason, I guess.
Boss: "What are you guys doing today?" The Guys: "None of your Bismuth."
AAAAAAAAAAAHahaha
That's pretty much the worst casting I've ever seen. It was awesome! Thank you!
I mean on the bright side, you managed to set the record for worst casting ever done! Congratulations 🎊
I have never felt so angry and dishearted by how they tried to cast it.
genuenly thought this was sarcasm untill i got to the part where they pulled it out of the cast
I don't know anything about casting, but this casting offends me, I can only imagine what an expert thinks of this
I thought you might have just been being mean, but dear God. After seeing the "casting" in question, that's putting it mildly.
I was going to comment this. Thank you.
I can't lie, I'm absolutely blown away that your boss man has continued to allow all of you guys to use his shop, as well as his tools and water jets, his materials, Etc, for this long. I can only imagine what his first thoughts were after hiring Dan and Mitchell, then seeing all the shenanigans and bs they were getting themselves into on KZhead in his facility and with his equipment. 😂😂 I have to imagine that there is a family link, that they are relatives, or something like that. I don't believe that a boss who had hired them and subsequently noticed that they were doing these things, would allow them to stay for very long. Of course, if he's getting a cut of all of the KZhead earnings, then I could imagine him being okay with all of it. LOL. I also noticed that in the beginning a lot of their videos were being filmed at night, I'm guessing after the shop head shut down for regular business and they wouldn't be in anybody's way. Of course now, we can see they are doing it all during regular business hours. I imagine they get a lot of visitors as well, wanting to check out everything and see the water jets in person as well as the official quality testing tongue. 😂
Every shop I worked in was happy when we wanted to stick around after making cool things for ourselves. We made fishing pole holders, suspension components, custom fire pits, body panels for my Dad's 33' international truck, machined heads, you name it, we made it, so long as there were two people there for safety. Most machine shop owners love creating so they are happy when their employees do too!
It’s his dads shop……….
longest comment ever. cool
@@cookiecook4 I can't tell if this is sarcastic but the comment was indeed cook
@@slippinslidewayz oh nice
You should definitely switch to greensand casting, and make some split molds. I'd also see about making a backyard foundry instead of using a pot and bench burner - it'll be faster, easier to clean, and safer too
Bismuth is absolutely beautiful. Never saw it before. Still confused how this crystal is also metal
and it's also pepto bismal
Metals form crystal grain structures. Happens that bismuth can be really big and visible. The colour comes from layers of bismuth oxide. Different thicknesses interact with light in different ways causing the rainbows.
All metal is crystal.
All metals have crystal build
Yeah as others have said, all metals are crystals. You just can't see the crystal structure in most because it's so small and compacted. Look up electrolysis of copper, tin, or lead and you'll see some cool crystals there too. I mean.. to be specific, pretty much all solids are (or can be) crystalline or polycrystalline. Most metals are actually polycrystalline, meaning they're made up of a bunch of tiny crystals all bonded together, rather than one large crystal, as you can see with Bismuth. Silicon isn't technically metal (it's a metalloid) but it is crystalline. Carbon and Sulfur are both nonmetals but both have crystal structures too. Carbon crystals even have a special name: Diamond. Heck, even most compounds form crystalline structures, like Sodium Chloride which is just table salt, and disaccharides like Sucrose, which is just white sugar. Even fuckin rocks are also technically crystals. It's just how atoms arrange themselves in a material. The only things that aren't crystals are amorphous solids like glass.
Ok major improvements here but still missing the "weird uncle " that is Mitchel. But waterjetting the hammer and doing wierd shop things is what this channel is about!
You guys should get some Petrabond. It's perfect for casting AND for playing around with!!!
So did ya'll buy the channel or take it over in some way? Just curious because Dan and Mitch now just seem to be making guest appearances every once in a while and i've not been able to find anything on why. Ya'll are awesome but it's just not the same :|
That's what I was wondering.
Someone please explain. I am confused too. This isn't the same any more...
I've been wondering about this too.
Dan and Mitchell were promoted, couple of the older guys retired and they took their place. With more responsibility comes less time. They had to pass the torch.
@@allnonsensewrenching Ah thank you for the update. I was initially a bit worried because I just figured there would be some kinda mention of it during a video(maybe there was and i missed it?) or something.
something about Dan doesn't seem quite the same
Anyone know what happened to the main guys?
"This is gonna explode on me. I'm gonna lose an eye." _continues_
Really nice to see Dan. His new haircut looks nice!
i actually had tungsten carbide stuck in my head today at work. creepy coincidence. love the vid!
yall have pumping out bangers recently thank you guys for all the hard work!
Imagine if they weren’t retired how good this channel would be
You should have warmed the tungsten up so its the same temperature as the bismuth, when molding
What a messy job. Much better off using ready made casting sand. You get an "A" for all your hard work. :-)
I have no idea how well it'd go, but for a bit more 'balance' between super heavy and super light, you could try casting an aluminum hammer head around a tungsten rod core, with the handle being aluminum or wood (idk which'd work better). It'd also hopefully not shatter instantly on impact.
Hey what happened to Mitchell and Dan?
Found the answer: PackTriots 13 days ago (edited) My name is Jack, I work at the shop with Dan and Mitch…. The old-timers (Jim and Scott) who handled the managerial tasks at the shop retired near the end of last year. Dan and Mitch were promoted and are filling the vacancies… Dan is sitting chief executive operator and Mitch is now local 69822 union president… Both positions came with much higher pay, but also much greater time allocation so the young guns are having fun with the channel rather than shutting it down entirely…
@@simplicityisbliss figured it was somethin like this, glad mitch and dan are gettin paid!
@@theclownofclowns Yeah. I just wish they would of told their fans.
Major improvement here. Good stuff.
It actually looks pretty cool. It give some kind rare item that you can get in the game. I will love to have that as deco on my wall.
During the casting, I would have gone for adding some kind of disc plate (preferably steel, but if Tungsten could come in disc form that would be epic) on either side of the hammer’s head, or perhaps even just the one side you wanted to strike with. That way you could have a striking surface that wouldn’t disintegrate on impact while preserving most of the ludicrous mass behind it. Of course, someone might have called you out by saying “You just made a steel hammer with extra steps!” And the purpose of your video might be to show that just because it’s heavy, it DOESN’T make for a good hammer. All the same, I like the concept and wanted to throw out a possible design choice I would have made to make it slightly more practical. Cheerio!
Rather good comment, along with heating the tungsten before adding the bismuth for a better bonding, kind of want to put a flat surface on the rod I have which is a cog head and as big around as a sledge till you get to a small connection point that attached to a screw socket making it a 36 pound rod looking like a medieval mace lol
Hammers are already designed for the optimal size and mass for human use after thousands of years. There is a good reason why tool hammer are around the same weight around the world. The only difference with tungsten is the hammer head would be smaller. So it is indeed a hammer with extra steps.
That bismuth looks crazy
That is beautiful. I want a reasonably unheavy version to admire on my wall.
Keep the cool projects coming guys!
Mind your own bismuth.
Now make a giant nail and use it to hammer a hammer into a piece of wood!!
The journey was great, the destination was most certainly better. Good job. : )
2 part sand casting is what you need. Make your 2 parts of the mold, toss some tung in there before you close it then pour in your bis.
Now you can say that you've got a special hammer that gets lighter every time you use it 😂😆
I need a hammer this heavy for forging. Imagine what you could do.
That is epic!! 🤩
The bismuth hammer looks like a Elden Ring weapon that scales with arcane and strength.
I'm an internet casting expert with several hours of experience (of video watching), Please make a 2 piece mould and make a space for the sprue and use casting sand. It won't look so terrible and save you a lot of time.
They aren't the most heavy metals, as almost anything can be made to be heavy, they are the most dense. For kicks and giggles, you should acquire some Osmium. It's the most dense metal.
The rarest metal on earth now?
@@vivimannequin Almost. Iridium is the rarest. Osmium is second rarest.
The highlight was definitely that banger of a line 'mind your own bismuth'
Ah, I see you're a man of tungsten as well.
I have tried to give the new guys a chance and I wish them success. But Dan and Mitchell are a difficult act to follow.
I miss the cutting in half of random things
A tungsten head with a titanium handle would be "SICK" DO IT" DO IT" JUST DO IT" haha. I'll be waiting..
I think I'm weak, watching people struggle with 20lbs makes me feel much better, thank you.
Beautimuth!
Guaranteed finger loss at first miss
watching these nerds struggle to hold something barely 20 pounds makes me feel strong :)
all ive wanted to do was make my own mjolnir out of 1/2inch plate with 1inch faces puzzled together and then grind the chamfers. never got around to it, making steering knuckle weldments for the olds takes precedence. ya'll are nutty just like me, keep it up! ive figured out how to make so much stuff faster than many other departments, the Jurassic park guys love not doing slots and features in angle iron/alum all the time. regards, James W (Omax mechanic/operator)
Bring back dan and Mitch
It's pretty clear they want a break, but I'm really glad this new guy keeps the fun going!
@@bigfan6016 it's not fun though

Wow, metal casting made easy!.. points for effort boys.
Where Mitchell and Dan
I love it that we're getting MORE regular videos, but can we please have some MITCHELL & DAN from time to time..??? You guys are doing a great job, but we need a full-length fix of the original "naughty-bois" and their hijinks at least once a month. :)
I dont think youre gonna see them anytime soon. We are not getting a single sentence of explanation on what happened to Dan and Mitch. They are making the same heavy mistake as The King of Random did; Drastic change, no explanation, everything starts getting worse. Either: 1) Dan and Mitch quit their job or got fired 2) Got bought out to work for someone else 3) Are in jail 4) Dan and Mitch want/need a break for an undisclosed amount of time (most likely) 5) The Shop went out of business and they couldnt afford to keep it running anymore so they put it up for sale on Craigslist and these people bought it. (Theory, based on a reddit post)
5:10 I love how EVERY blue collar worker quotes this video on a daily basis. Ed Bassmaster really unifies us all
This is how legendary hammers in RPGs are made.
Yall should try zinc it melts at 850 degrees and is heaved as sin easy to cast
You really nailed the edditing
I don't always listen to acid jazz on KZhead, but when I do it's always The Waterjet Channel.
You really NAILED it on this video
Cool vid. Learned a bit. Also the 16 ounce hammer (bit light, 22 is nicer) should 3 to 4 strikes max for any nail you were testing with. If you were well practiced the small nails are all 2 strikes.
Bismuth might be cool to make plastic injection molds 🤔 Great video 👍
looks like a legendary item
Nothing like a bismuth stew to start your day😊
It was about when random chunks of tungsten were haphazardly stuffed into the vaguely hammer-shaped pool of molten bismuth that I realized what kind of video I was watching, and neither the journey nor the destination disappointed
LOVE the Ed Bassmaster throwback! xD
*Rainbow Mallet* A hammer forged with solid Tungsten in molten Bismuth. A fragile but powerful weapon. Special ability, Shatter, when activated, the hammer will do ten times damage, but will be destroyed. 50-67 blunt damage +4 CHA, +2 STR, + 3 INT, -6 DEF
The sound you got with the biggest nail first was really cool
Wow I wished I had a dad that supportive.
That "mind your own bismuth" comment was a genuine gem
“Make sure u seasoned it well (sips)” 😳😭😭😂😂😂
AMAZING
This looks like the warhammer of some dwarven king! The colors and the texture is just epic :D
Everyone is gonna ignore how he tasted liquid bismuth
Nice casting
So... the head of a hammer or axe tend to be a separate part with a hole that goes around the shaft/handle, right? I suggest making them in 2 parts in the future and seeing if that helps with durability
Would wetter sand help keep the mold shape better?
The bismuth behemoth 😁
That soup looks yum!
Watched these two videos. Funny videos. "respirator, I hardly knew her!" Haha
I feel like this is missing a compound that could help support the brittle atomic structure of the metal. Maybe try infusing 3-8% nickle into your alloy?
The crystal gems would be proud 😍
Wouldnt want to get caught on the bismuth end of that hammer
"That spatula's now turning green" ... We call that a ladle. XD
whats the mawp on that jetter?
Does the tungsten dissolve in the bismuth?
That is a legendary weapon right their
4:30 It really shook me to hear the slurp sound after he said it’s important to make sure it’s seasoned
I have actually held bismuth at school before, it was handheld size and weighed about 7lbs, very pretty and snapped very easily (from experience)
Just spotted the Diablo in the background, I use to own a bonsai blue 96 VT 👍🏼
Awesome, Now i just need to know where to find Dual Bismuth Hammers for my Str build 😉
In true Hammer methodology we use a Hammer to make a Hammer. Never been so proud
You can make double sided mold with sand as well. Research it.
Those life quotes in the end, though 👏
Carbon fiber handle with tungsten head?
Love the video! Just one thing my guy the metal rode you stuck in the center, reason why it was weak and broke the way it did. The metals only formed around the bit and pieces plus the rod.
