Is an LS-Powered Subaru BRZ Better than a Corvette? - One Take

Everyone loves the Subaru BRZ/FR-S/86 (especially the new 2022 Subaru BRZ and GR86). They're fun, agile, spacious, usable, and relatively inexpensive. But they always needed a little more power, or in the owner of this car's case, a lot more. He's put a lot of time and money into his Subaru BRZ to make it as fast as a lot of famous sports cars. Was it worth it?

NEW SHIRTS!

Hey everyone, glad most of you are enjoying the vid! Zack did a great job. So happy I could help kick off bringing tuner cars back to the channel. As far as the smell of fuel in the cabin, that is coming from the factory fuel pump behind the drivers seat feeding the surge tank in the trunk. It could be sealed off better and there could be a panel to replace the missing rear seat. But please remember just because this car has plates does not mean it's a "street car". While it's not a racecar because of the lack of a full cage, I would describe it as a very comfortable track car. To be fair I did warn Zack not to drive with the windows up 😂 I understand why he did to capture good audio but really, what kind of self respecting car guy drives with the windows up? 😂 After all I did ditch the AC in favor of a dry sump anyway... kzhead.info/sun/htJqZJGKeXtpdHA/bejne.html&ab_channel=GrabTheWheel For those saying LS swaps are boring and played out. Please watch some track footage. There's a reason why I have Lambo owners telling me how good the car sounds. I know I am biased but I don't think there's a car new or used for less than 100K that's as engaging or fun to drive on track as this build. For those complaining about the price, I'm sorry the car is not for you. I know it sounds crazy but I'm just trying recoup about 1/2 of what I have into the build. I know that project cars are obviously not worth what you have into them...
First, I'm sorry you have to sell this car. I'm guessing there is a family involved and it just has to be done. I've been doing 'project' cars for decades, and I have two going at the same time right now. Mine are not nearly as expensive as yours, but one big problem remains when considering a modified project car's market value -- it's never even CLOSE. You mentioned trying to recoup 1/2 of what you've spent. I take that to mean hard dollars on parts and outside services for this particular build, with no dollar value placed on your time, nor on all the previous attempts you've made at building the ultimate BRZ -- the attempts that taught you how to get it right with this one. I'll bet the true, fully accounted-for cost of creating this super cool car is staggering.
I don't know. If you're looking for something completely visceral and 100% functional and stupid capable, this build is probably worth at least $70k.
Price is spot on, good luck with sale.
Cool build. Thanks for sharing it with us! Good luck with sale.
Thank you for your service. What a unit
I miss seeing more modified vehicles like this on one takes.
Especially ones like this. That are sorted.
Glad I'm not the only one! Stoked to be able to share the car.
You know those “try not to smile/laugh challenges? This is the opposite. The “try not to not to smile/laugh game” Good luck Zackman.
Big facts. The modified weird cars are the most interesting thing on the channel. Those original one takes were killer.
The vast majority of people watching this channel are people with or people who aspire to own modified cars. Not brand new ones.
This is a good example of what hot rodding is all about. This car looks like a lot of fun 👍
I just finished putting a 6.0 w/ LSA supercharger in my Genesis Coupe, and it was 100% worth it. Financially a stupid decision, but I enjoy the hobby and the learning experience. The car is so much more fun to drive now
So you just hate tires, that's what I'm hearing. - ZK
You mad lad lol
@@TheSmokingTire Yeah, traction is a bit of an issue right now, but I hope to have it sorted as well as this BRZ you reviewed (minus the gas fumes in the cabin lol).
@@TheSmokingTire I think he means that he loves tires.. he buys them so often now.
6 liter? Should have gone 5.3 iron block or a 6.2 👍
Please do more 'sorted' yet moded cars like this one. Really fun to watch and more exciting than a factory review.
Everyone tell Rob these are the kind of cars that should be on "Sorted" 😂
@@grabthewheel4217 robs to busy being a bitchy snob complaining about all his terrible financial woes with his rental company . I don’t expect him to do anything worthwhile in the future .
Tons of gas fumes in the cabin isn't sorted.
Honestly, I did not at all expect there to be a "why" question towards this car and its mods. The 86/brz platform is great, ls platform is great. Combining them just makes sense.
The FA20 is a weak engine too. This car needs to be swapped
The why question should be why couldnt they make a motor that can handle over 400hp in the first place, since replacing a 2.0 with a 6.3L is not feasible.
@@swsome why not feasible? Also, 6.3?
@@trashbandit2449 he clearly doesn’t know LS engines nor how light they are (aluminum block and heads)
@@xaviermedina9792 yeah the displacement doesn't matter. You could replace a small 4 cylinder with a 7.4 liter ls. There's no rules saying you can't, just space. But a 7.4 would be the same size as a 4.8
Im a Subaru guy. Its funny that I can tell that the guy is honest and seasoned in Subarus when he says, "buy another motor when you blow it up, don't try to build one".
That's because the FA has oiling issues at high lateral load.
Saw a very similar ls6 swapped brz on Cars&bids a few weeks ago, almost bought it lol. Amazing build, very very glad to see this on TST as well
the one on cars&bids is garbage compared to this ride. Everything is professionally built and done right on this car. Motec, Dry sump, firewall between driver and trunk, katech 416 engine, proper brakes instead of mismatched calipers, an actual exhaust system instead of fender exit. This thing is a reliable, exotic-car dream crusher on track and street.
@@joelspitsnaugle Thanks Joel! I'd like to think mine is built a tad better than the average swap built for freeway pulls!
@@grabthewheel4217 you're the owner? Phenomenal car man, really tastefully done. Would buy it in a minute if I had the money. Would say good luck on the sale but you won't need it. Hopefully the owner loves it as much as you do.
@@Synthwave89 thank you 🙏 Most people don’t understand you can’t just put a big engine in a small car and hit the track. I learned that the hard way 😂 So much work and development went into the build.
Why not buy a used C6 Corvette?
9:02 Matt Farah and Joe Rogan do kinda look alike ... Depending on how much of those fumes you inhale... 😄
The trinity for me is Matt, Joe, and Dana White
I swear, I intermix the two on a regular basis. Matt Rogan / Joe Farah. :D
glad to see this channel back to their bread and butter
Love these style of One Takes. Nice to see a personally owned, modified car review again. Great work Zack.
You guys killed it on another video!! The subject matter hits dear to my heart I've been toiling away with the idea of getting a 86 again & either boosting or LS swapping looks like this answered both those questions: first boost then LS when broken 💔 Thanks for doing what you guys do, we appreciate the hell out of YOU!
I love when Zack can make content by himself. Two takes are cool and all, but my man Zack really does well by himself
He does a lot better than Farah actually.
Love that you're getting fan cars back into the mix! Keep 'em coming!
I hope this means fan cars are back. Those videos are what made me buy and start modifying my GTI
I drove a heavily modified mustang for years and years. It was an absolute blast and I had a ton of fun in it. It brought me many years of joy. I would break it and build it up better/stronger. I drove it until the motor was smoking and it would no longer pass emissions. I get it. Modded cars are fun. I'm older with a family now, so if I had a modded car like this now, it would have to be a side piece.
Thanks for the video. Always like seeing these big money mods from other people because I could never justify doing them myself.
Now that's a BRZ I wouldn't mind owning. And that sound 💯💯
He really went full blown street machine on this thing. And surprizing to hear how stable the feels without a wing.
Love that you presented a question and answered it in 8 seconds. I'm coming back just for that clip
When done correctly, the Shelby Cobra formula applied to a good chassis can be magical. Awesome build!
A C6 Z06 weighs about the same and has wins at 24H of Le Mans. The BR-Z with an LS weighs the same and has smaller track and worse suspension geometry/weight placement.
@@moustachio334 I don't disagree but you're really talking apples and oranges here lol. Home built 'fun' car vs a bespoke race car with the backing of GM r&d, I would expect that z06 would be faster then this on a track
I remember the review Matt did on the Crawford Performance BRZ about 8 years ago. That car was a beast and it made Matt cackle.
At that point he basically made his own car and that’s why I love seeing these builds
LS motor in a lighter and smaller package is always a win.
More torque, less pork.
Wait is it really lighter than the fa20?
@@v8_sami the car chassis is lighter, not the engine
@@v8_sami no chance in hell lol he says 3000lbs which is heavier than the 2700lbs factory.
@@v8_sami the Fa20 is 480 lbs vs 450lbs for a LS. The weight on the FA20 includes the trans. I guess because it comes with it.
Great build!
This is what car tuning/building is all about. Make your imagination reality. Love it👌😎
This is the coolest car you guys have had on here in a while. I want it.
Great return of the 'one take' series. This is the good side of yt. 👍
Glad to see modded cars back - I enjoy these a lot.
Great video, Zack! THAT is a totally insane car! Too much power, and I want one JUST like it!! Once the gas smell in the cabin is fixed, it'll be perfect!
I previously had an ls2 swapped Saturn sky. I just purchased a Hakone 86 and have a new ls3 and t56 ready to go in, I can’t wait to build it 👍🏻
You cant never get this type of excitement or joy driving an electric car
Would love to see more one takes with the camera being between the seats... Gives off a different experience! 👍
Awesome build The drive must be unreal
Man this thing looks absolutely wild! Wish mine was half the beast this is!
i think this is the car that many of us want to build. however deep in we realize the compromises start to add up and the cost just moves you closer to the breaking point. if you are committed to the vision however, greatness like this can happen.
After getting passed by a twin turbo LS Genesis last week, I'm a firm believer in LS swapping all the FRS & Genesis coupes.
I’m stoked to see that you’re bringing fan cars back-and as Zach said, this is a great way to start.
Zack, this is a great episode.
Zack- would loved to see you take that review on track where this thing excels! Or at least include a small clip in your video with the owner on track with it!
Link in bio to a track video.
Zak Nice review , I like the "fun answer" The gas smell would be an issue for most people unless it was just a track car. I'm sure the owner loves this car looks like nothing but fun to drive .
It is most definitley a track car, albeit a very comfortable track car!
Who doesn't love smell of gas in the morning
@@V8_screw_electric_cars why is there so much gas smell?
I love this car so much only people who’ve had it understand it’s just such a great car to drive
Facts. my 18 BRZ hands down my favorite car in terms of driving feel i've ever been in. Even with headers/turbo and a tune, which is where im currently at is amazing. This is the end goal :P One day hahahahahah
oh for sure. i'm currently on my second one and loving every minute of it
Zack didn't talk about the crown jewel in the suspension, the MCS dampers! Guess he was overwhelmed by the motor lol
This has always been one of my dream builds!
This thing is beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Man if only I could build a car like this 😫
This is literally like a modern day shelby cobra...hell yeah, Adam! Beautiful machine right there.
I hope when I or someone else finishes their Kswap in this chassis that Zach and Matt can review it!
Missed my wrx so ended up getting a 2011 again was SO close to just buying a BRZ and kswapping there's kits out there now for it too!
- it's completely road legal! 10 seconds later... - sorry I'm going to open the windows so I dont pass out for the fumes
“Road legal,” if you know the right guy
Only california and new york 😂
man there’s so many great lines in this review
these are the kinds of videos people want to see
Sick build. Reminds me I’m gonna need major brake upgrade soon. 😅
These videos remind me of "Tuned"- soooo much better than press cars. Kudos
I wanna do something similar with a GR86 here in Japan: swap in a ~500whp B58 engine. These cars are such great platforms for insane, playful mods that will move like greased lightening.
Need to see this car on track!
After adding a hot cam, intake, and exhaust to my LS-based L84 Silverado, I say why the hell not. That looks and sounds badass. The LS3 cars are up there with the 2000 Cobra R for awesome noise.
This and that Dinan BMW 1M that Matt drove a couple of years ago are what dreams are made of, holy shit that car is cool
That was a s65 v-8 1m? That car was amazing.
@@grad0n Sure was! If I won the lotto it would be parked right next to a 22b 💭
The 1m is much more rare
This gets me more excited than any new car
Love this video. I plan to do something similar to a GR86. Drive it for a few years.. wait for warranty to expire and then go for the V8 swap and turn it into a custom fitted toy for me to get my V8 fix with and/or track on occasion. Great video, great explanation of the car. Thanks.
Damn that is a well suited match. Proper build.
Great job Zach! I feel like you could ease up on the long winded metaphorical analogies at end of vids though.
Looks like an incredibly fun car to drive
I'd love to build up a BRZ very similar, but with the FPC 5.2 Voodoo, and geared even more towards daily driving. Mated to a 10R80, high flow cats so not fumes.
Do it … this Katech built LS3 with Trick Flow heads make 500 to the tire and yet basic bolt-on Gen 3 5.0 makes the same without cracking a cam cover with a wider rev range
Dont think it would fit with out some cutting.
Currently the plan for my GT86 as I am in Australia and am not allowed a engine over 6L for NA ans 3.6L for boosted. However I want a manual and have a goal of 600 rwhp.
that opening was top gear tier
The excitement and feedback is why this is worth it
I have this same shift knob in my MK7 GTI 6spd manual, and it’s amazing! Except I have it in the 100mm version and not the 150mm version like this one. Raceseng Circuit Sphere is what it’s called. Best shifter I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot!
Holy shit, the sound that the shifter makes is solid
Very cool build, I wish I had the money and skill to do something like this.
"It's not that overpowered" 2 seconds later "OMG!!! HAHAHAA!"
Then he realized the car was trying to kill him!! lol
This looks fun. Sounds great
Please review more custom built cars like this . I have built some project cars and the final set up and tune to get the bugs out and make it a daily driver is the hard part .
The BRZ/86/FRS steering wheel actually can be pulled out a bit just using the steering adjusting lever, you can push it in or pull it out, I accidentally found this out while in my car.
That chassis with that engine. My god.
My good friend Brandon completed his over the summer. It's a beast LS3 FR3
Why get this over a Camaro 1LE? You can see out of this car. I won't be trying to purchase it (I am broke) but it'd be an amazing ride. I'd have to fix that gasoline smell in the cabin though. That'd drive me nuts REAL fast.
No doubt. I test drove a 1le prior to my 997 purchase and the 1le visibility is horrendous. I can't believe gm designed that car that way. I'm 6'4" and the 997 fit me perfectly and the visibility is superb.
Read the top comment. The seller talked about remedying the smell.
@@mikehertz6507 Haha same dude.. I went from a 6th gen ZL1 to a 997.. I got in the 997 and was like holy shit, I can see everything.
@@2fast2nick 997 Turbo?
@@mikehertz6507 yeah 997.2 Turbo. you?
We’ve wanted to do the same after owning several V8 RX-7s!
Hoping my K24 turbo swap will be a step up, but I did think my Harrop SC was pretty fun before the FA20 blew, so I bet a LS would be fun in this chassis.
Wow, what a beautiful beast!
Without even seeing the video yet, I’m gonna say the answer to your title is....YES. 💪🏻
Jeez the first 9 seconds were so funny to watch, i haven't even been able to watch the rest without commenting
Y'all could do a series of videos where Zack responds to negative/mean comments. Call it the Klapback
Awesome Zach. I want one too. Just an LS…(416 Katech!)
Make sure you guys thumbs up this video to let Matt and Zack know how much we like these modified one takes.
Holy crap, that looks nuts.
Beautiful Build. Reminds me of my friends putting small blocks in 260 and 280z's back in the 80's. Is there a Build Sheet out there?
In the description is most of the build and a link to a lap at Laguna.
As this conversion is a possible project for me, info on turn in would have been useful. I assume that it's not a lead tipped arrow from what you didn't say but some description of how the front end behaves would have been useful.
Great job Zach
Man.. I wish I could make an ls3 brz! would be such an awesome daily
This is a hot rod and all hot rods are awesome!
this is great but need to see it back to back track tested and get some data on the pros and cons
This car really shows how good you are as a driver, I think he noticed that lol
i love builds like this
So he reinvented the Holden Monaro with an LS3...Nice job! For real, I wish they still sold them here or Subaru would collab with GM and start building these!!!
Looks awesome, but $70k seems quite rich for a project car. I'm sure many will disagree and I wish him the best of luck.
Yeah, for 70k I want something with a warranty and resale value - super cool car though.
spent about the same on the brakes as he did on the engine? What can you spend on brakes that is the price of a built engine?! they don't look carbon ceramic. or do you mean price of the mods only, not including price of the engine itself? Does the airbag still work? I've been looking for a steering wheel extender that retains all OEM functions.
not many cars where the performance translate so well through a video.
That is a great build!
I bought a BMW 135i. 300hp twin turbo 6 in-line. This car is very fast and fun to drive.
Amazing car and review
If I wanted to build something similar to this, where would I go and how would I get in touch with the company? This was an amazing video to watch I was waiting for you to touch the button on the car to make it louder
MCS Dampers means this dude is serious
