Averaged 100 mph from a standing start, 141 mph across the finish line.
I think the Tacoma is crazier, it looks just as wild but think how much more you have to worry about with the soft suspension, turbo and 4WD
It did look as though it was going to take off and make a summersault over every cracks of the track. Impressive to watch physics and aerodynamics at work. And that sound. Gosh that sound.
Really looked like Heidfeld was wrestling that car round every inch of that track.

That V10 sound always will be the F1 sound for me. I remember my early childhood, the days of Hakkinen and Schumacher. I knew zero about technology, or downforce, or grooved tires vs. slick tires... about any of that stuff, but that scream of a pre-historic beast was like a call to TV. There is something cosmic about that sound.

Nick Hieldfeld in the McLaren MP4 gives me goose bumps every time watch it. If only F1 cars still sounded like this :-(

That run from Nick Heidfeld was stunning and I was lucky enough to be there to see it. The way he fights the car, running some epic camber is astonishing. One of the great hill runs ever anywhere. F1 has never been my favourite form of motorsport, but there is always something special about an F1 car, even more so when out of its comfort zone like this.
There is just something about an F1 car that just captivates me. The speed, the unreal levels of grip and how they just seem to change direction effortlessly and the sound of those v10s

I am Mitch I thought the same thing. He was dancing all over the place lol. It's hard trying to do a flying lap on cold tires.
The time was set in 1999, using a then year-old car. I think Formula One rules at the time only allowed demo spec tyres, and the nature of the track meant it had to be run at maximum ride height.
That was NOT a 1989 car. Looked like a 2005+ car.
It's a 1998 car, and Nick Heidfeld made the run in 1999.

The McLaren MP4/13 sounds EPIC!! Gotta love those V10s! :D Fudge me, that's one *lovely* scream it makes!! Start playing the clip at 8:23 but listen as it screams by at about 8:25 to 8:29. Oooh, it's SOOO much better than these glorified leaf blowers we have today in F1.
Yet the new F1s are faster than this beasts.
I don't care about that, its not by much anyway. F1 was always about the sport, its stars, the SOUND of F1, and the cars, not the speed of it.
Why sound is so important?
Do you go to a concert to SEE the rock stars or to LISTEN to them? Which is the priority over the other?
I go to a concert to listen to the music and see the stars i cant really say which has priority, if its clasical music of course the music in person, if its someone famous maybe to see the star. However there is the thing. Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound) i go to listen to human creativity and talent. Not a noise made by a machine that was originally designed for something else. Why so many people get a kick of loud and repetitive noises why there aren't "engine concerts" instead of races, or go to a machine shop, a generator room etc. Look at an engine sound on a spectrometer, its repetitive and predictable. then look at music, totally different you cant compare the two.

Very often I start to overlook F1, and how it became boring and samey, too many boring rules and etc... but then you come back here and you remember how insanely difficult it is to drive an F1. What a machine.

@@roku_nine just because a car is advanced and fast doesnt mean its interesting or entertaining. watching goodwood revival and its 90 year old cars be thrown around a track is much more entertaining than a lot of modern race series.

That's really amazing from loeb as he make driving a pikes peak monster look easy (its definitely not, those are predator that will kill you)
Shame that the car was running the short ratio gearbox from Pikes Peak, making it top out at 240km/h, you can hear it bang the limiter in the first cockpit view.
+rockzs74r You should check Manuel Dondi and his Fiat X1/9.Speed of Loeb's Peugeot with lower budget.And of course,driver is skilled and fearless.I bet he'd set very fast time here on Goodwood.

O. Clark looked very smooth on his run. I’ve seen a lot of jaggedy driving on these runs which seems counterintuitive on tight roads
that little electronic beast in the top spot was jolting all over the course whenever the throttle was applied, that thing is crazy powerful and crazy light

But honestly, Nick Heidfeld in the v10 McLaren was the best not because of being the fastest but because of that amazing v10 era f1 sound. That's the sound and era that got me into f1 growing up. I miss those days!
Amazing - Only attended FOS twice but have seen 3 of those runs - Olly Clark and the Millen "truck" ran in 2016, and the Jag Group Cs at the Ford 100 year anniversary event in 2003.
That Tacoma is awesome. That was one heck of a drive.

It would be amazing to see the Porsche 919 evo and the RB14 in Monaco spec duke it out this year. Even though modern F1 cars are about 130 kilos heavier, the aero and mechanical grip along with the extra power would likely knock a few more seconds off the time.

Ifan Ramadhana Unfortunately they didn’t. It’s a shame, I think it would have probably taken the win this year. And it might have even competed for the overall win. Would have been nice to see the GR59 run. It’s the evolution of the GR51 that still holds the third spot overall.

It is a VW with an 'R' badge after all...it made me go wow repeatedly...truly ferocious speed and grip. The Pikes Peak run is also really worth a look...

A legit hill climb record at Goodwood FOS can only be set on the Sunday afternoon in the "final", not in qualifying in the days leading up to it.
@@Franksey180 true, but the fact he still set a time that fast on a damp track is crazy, if that track was dry i bet we would have beaten that 39.9 he did on saturday. to be honest i would like to see VW bring it back next year and McLaren bring the MP4/13 back and set them head to head, even more get a more recent F1 car there, but i don't know the rules on how old an F1 car must be to be brought there
Afaik they have banned all open wheeled cars from Goodwood, some sort of safety thing.
The thing is, the VW is not really limited by F1 regulation as the MP4/13 was. Translation: The McLaren has the potential to go a lot quicker..
There's a couple turns in wich could be a 55 Le Mans stile massacre here..
I hope it's not going to happen, but if it does.. It's going to get very, very ugly.
