  • Hey everyone! What's your favorite litter and why? Let us know! We've noticed a lot of passionate, informative comments about the harmful effects of declawing. This is a controversial practice with a host of negative effects and the mention of declawing in this video was not meant to condone or normalize the surgery. If anyone would like more details on declawing and how it affects cats, you may be interested in our article on the subject: www.wwwallaboutcats.com/declawing-cats

    • Hi Nala, I'm sorry that the declawing debate triggered your grief. Losing your cat the way you just did must be incredibly upsetting and I'm sorry that you're going through this. I can't fully understand your experience, but I know that especially right now, the world can look like an incredibly frustrating and confusing place. We don't intend to stop the declawing debate as it's a valid conversation, but we are working on plans to ensure that our comment sections remain a positive space for everyone. Take care. - Mallory

All lies. What I got instead was 16 years of vet bills, 16 years of daily brushing, 16 years of picking up her poop, 16 years of picking up her vomit, 16 years of vacuuming cat hair, 16 years of cat scratches, and oddly I have loved it all. An hour later, I found myself at a 24 hour superstore buying $200 worth of cat supplies. So informing people of a litter that can be helpful or easier to use for a declawed cat is a very nice thing to mention for those who have cats with sensitive paws in general also. Thank you for mentioning that. I appreciate that thoughtfulness. My cat is not declawed but I know this video isn’t even about declawing cats it’s about litter for certain types of cats. Hopefully everyone else commenting understands this also.

  • Please NEVER declaw you cat. Declawing is the process of amputating the first knuckle of the paw. It has been know to cause lots of side effects such as aggression, arthritis, peeing outside of the litter box, and can lead to death if your cat escapes and can’t catch his own food or protect himself.

    • Agreed. So many get up in arms about declaws, but don’t know the back story. I am currently hospice fostering a senior declawed cat who was surrendered to the shelter by his owner, when he was diagnosed in renal failure. He was declawed long before being surrendered to the shelter. When I take him out to the pet store, some stranger, or another, always makes a snide comment about his being declawed. He is a very social kitty, who absolutely loves all the attention he gets from the staff at the store. I’ll deal with the rude and obnoxious comments, rather than deny my poor boy something he enjoys.

  • Pine pellets hands down for me. $6 for a 40 pound bag, so definitely a great pick for anyone on a limited budget. The pellets absorb the urine, turning to sawdust and completely neutralize the odor. Using a sifting box, and stirring the pellets with a scoop, the sawdust will fall thru the sifter into the bottom tray. Then I just scoop the poop with a pellet scoop, shake the pellets loose, and flush.

    @dh2392@dh2392 Жыл бұрын
    • Flush? Like down the toilet? Absolutely no type of litter should be flushed in a toilet ever. It wreaks havoc on your plumbing most of it settles down in the elbows and turns and low points which can be extremely costly down the line. Also cat poop in particular should not be flushed into our sewer systems because the eggs of Toxoplasma gondii are able to survive the wastewater treatment process and leaves all of the water contaminated. We also use pellets and the breeze litter box. I just shake it so I decide until all the sawdust goes into the lower tray, slide it out scoop out the few poops into the same tray, and then take it outside and dump it into my compost bin. Also, I used to have a problem with rodents getting into my laundry room, so now once a month I sprinkle the peed sawdust by the wall outside that area and haven't seen a single rodent anywhere near here in over a year because of it.

  • For anyone with senior, possibly arthritic, declawed cats (it was many years ago before there was internet let alone any widespread information and we'll never do it again) - but I just wanted to say, for whatever reason our chubby (genetic) guy developed a complete litter aversion over the years. Type or box itself or location was no matter, cleaned twice a day, multiple, and there were no pressing medical issues that weren't being addressed. I just had to say puppy pads saved our home. Just the pad, no fancy box, but an unscented pad. To our best estimate it was due to the smooth, flat nature of them (jagged grains under heavier paws, ouch!). We had issues off and on with carpets for years, but it was never medical issues. So, puppy pads = disposable "carpet" compromise. We tried a pad in a box but concluded the height of the boxes themselves were becoming an issue. He was very happy and spoiled and loved the rest of the time, and puppy pads helped us help him. Occasionally he would go in the box (still left a clean one available), but a good 95% of the time he preferred those pads. They're not gonna absorb odor at all, especially poops, but in the end they saved all of us. Just in case anyone happens to be watching this because they're at their wits end with frustration, I've been where you are. I hope this can help someone

    • Declawing cats is horrific. And don't give me the whole "there was no internet information around back then so I didn't know" BS. Any time I even consider a procedure for my cats, I research and ask around a lot about that surgery. I don't just hop into it willy-nilly. No one does and neither do you. You had opportunities to double check if that was right for your pets. Instead, you chose to do that to your pets because you wanted to put forth less energy. You could have easily simply observed other already de-clawed kitties. It is easy to see the pain and suffering those cats endure after a de-claw when you watch them closely (even observing those animals just one time). And that doesnt take any kind of internet connection whatsoever. If you are "at your wits end" about the potty situation, just imagine how your cat feels about you putting them through that procedure.

While it is extremely horrible, there are still people who will do it unfortunately and cats who get adopted that have already been declawed and it is important their owners have that information. I didn’t think it ruined the reviews nor was it off putting. It was information. Peoples concern is understandable but some of these comments are a little too much. Voicing an opinion is important though so it’s their right. I appreciate all your research and your video! I love feline pine but I think I’m going to try another one soon so this helped a lot.

    • But I have a question if we don’t declaw cats or kittens then if they scratch us it’s going to hurt

      @starwar1028@starwar10283 жыл бұрын
    • starwarstarwar74 There are many things you can do to minimize your cat hurting you or your belongings that don’t involve declawing. You can try several ways to train your cat to not scratch you or your items and can instead offer them plenty of acceptable items to scratch, you can keep their nails trimmed so minimal damage is done if they happen to still scratch occasionally, and if you still have problems there are things called soft paws which you periodically apply on your cats claws that don’t harm them and still allow them to still extend their claws as needed and scratch but will stop any damage from being done when they do. Declawing should never be an option. A cat’s nails are actually an extension of their paws. It is extremely painful and inhumane to declaw them and has been likened to someone cutting off a human’s fingers at the knuckle. In addition should they go outside they have lost their means of defending themselves or escaping predators. People are correct that in many areas it’s actually illegal to declaw a cat for these reasons. Please research how damaging it is to them and the alternatives available before deciding to declaw a cat.

    • I as well agree with the original poster and can understand why this was included in the review. It may would have helped if the reviewer stuck in a comment during the video that she doesn’t endorse declawing but we also should understand that her helping to meet the needs of the cats that have already been declawed doesn’t mean she condones declawing.

    • Crystal litter worked well for me with my very elderly cat. He had trouble walking and regular litter shifted under his feet. Crystal litter was an instant hit for him because it was a stable surface that gave him security when eliminating. My problem with crystal litter was that the wet messes couldn’t be scooped out, and the younger cats also liked using it, so it gave really poor odor control after about 5 days. I also had issues with crystal pieces tracked outside the box which were really sharp and painful when I stepped on them. I vacuumed and swept diligently, but there were always pieces the cats succeeded in scattering outside the box.

I recently rescued a cat that was declawed pretty early in life and although he doesn't act any different from our other cats I know that it does affect him. Declawing should never be done if not medically necessary. Putting that aside, I'm a bit confused as to why people are going off in the comments, is she supposed to act as If there aren't cats that are declawed? This video wasn't about declawing, it was about litter. At no point in the video did she condone it so there shouldn't be a problem. Thank you for the video. I appreciate the time and effort it took to make it.

The clumping and other powder types will stick to newborn kittens. This can block their airway and even suffocate them. She was a stray who adopted us. She had 8 beautiful babies. We spayed and neutered everyone with the help of a local cat rescue before they were rehomed. :)

One of them was fixated on eating it and several times I found him trying to choke himself, so the clumping litter would have been fatal. Now he's well over 15 months old, I've started incorporating clumping litter which more closely resembles grainy sand with the usual litter. He seemed to like it and didn't start trying to sample it, taste wise. We kept Mother Cat and one of her kids. Then I got four more cats practically live on my front patio. 2 from next door, and 2 abandoned or stray cats. Next door's have moved on now, but the strays still visit everyday, and one of them hardly ever leaves from under my house or garden. Looks like I've got another cat.

  • I would have liked to know what the environmental impact of a litter is; I use pine pellets for my 10 cats. It is $8 for 40 pounds and lasts several weeks per bag. It is not a problem returning the used litter to a landfill. My cats do not appear to find the large size of the pellets unpleasant; that surprised me. I had heard that some pine pellets are treated with a material that is harmful, so be sure what you try are safe. I figure I save $900/year over clumping litter. The main problem is that compressed pine "bits" are easily tracked away from the litter box because moisture causes the pellets to dissolve. I use mats designed to trap this particulate matter around the littler box, but it is not totally effective. Why do I have 10 cats? Because I rescue them and there are not enough people to provide all the homes. Neuter and spay, please, and encourage others to do it.

Within a week the soiled corn pieces started decaying and the fruit flies moved in. I now use Arm & Hammer Slide. • How to keep your clumping litter a little cleaner... Most important...Don't shake the scoop! Use a scoop that has slots large enough to let the unclumped litter flow smoothly back into the litter box. Shaking the scoop to get the litter through the scoop dislodges used and smelly bits of litter to fall back into the box. I use a metal scoop with large slots and I tilt my scoop a little bit to get the loose litter out of my scoop. I have been wanting to try a wire scoop but have not gotten one yet. Also try to keep the litter deep enough that the liquid does not reach the bottom of the box for easier removal.

  • I invented something similar to the Breeze system - I had gotten the 3-layer litter box (top layer has a grid) then I put a puppy pad under the grid, place in the grid and fill with the crystal litter. The pee goes down to the pad and the litter holds the solids. I replace the pad about 1 time per week and most of the litter remains still usable and I add to it. This way, the litter lasts twice as long as a clay litter would last.

  • For those wondering about the other natural brands. I've experimented with most of them and found pine pellets to be the best so far if your cat tolerates it. Great odor control, less mess, fairly easy to clean, low dust. And you don't have to worry about the intestinal clumping issues the clumping litters have been known to cause. Wheat litter would get moldy on me and hold moisture. Odor control was average. The newspaper one had such a strong inky odor it made me feel sick when I poured or cleaned it. I can't imagine how the cat felt everytime she went inside. The walnut litter though great odor control would stain everything in the cats path after getting out of the box and tracked everywhere. I would find dark paw prints on my bed sheets...ewww. The corn ones like Worlds Best would just track everywhere and make such a mess. For the pine pellets, if you used a good pellet designed box or just scoop it out its not that difficult. I find if you leave the pine dust in there it can track more so I clean every day or 2 at most. It does not smell unless the cat didn't bury the poop all the way which is fine as I know it needs to be cleaned anyway. The pellets that get out are pretty easy to pick back up and toss in or sweep into a dust pan and throw back in. Having a good litter mat that has holes and texture to hold the dusty bits that escape keeps in controlled more and cleans your cats paws off more to track less. Save your money and get them from the tractor supply instead of the feline pine version. It also lasts a really long time. And its easy to just top off. Nothing will stick to the bottom as long as you keep the litter deep and when you want to do a deep clean it all just slides right out. It dries quickly as long as you don't let it sit for too long between cleanings. And to make it easier for you use a sifting box system you can put a puppy pad inside to catch the litter on the bottom so its super easy to just wrap up and throw out without having to clean the dust off or sanitize it and I only have to do this about once a month. Just get a deep bottome piece. Hope this helps. And thanks for such a detailed review I really enjoyed the video!

    • This was super helpful!! I’m getting a kitten tomorrow do you think the pine pellets would be ok for kittens? She is 12 wks, I believe she was using the walnut kind but I didn’t see it at the store and after reading your review I would prefer to change it. Anything you would suggest regarding transition? Can I completely change the litter?

      @milenashubas6306@milenashubas63062 жыл бұрын
    • @@milenashubas6306 pine pellets should be ok. Thier paws are smaller so it might be a little tricky for them to move around but it isn't necessary as the pee will just go to the bottom anyway and you can scoop out the poo when they make one. I haven't used with kittens before so I'm not sure but its worth a try. My cat would be fine with just straight transitioning but most prefer a slow change. Ideally you would start off what the kitten is used to especially since she is going to be in a new environment it takes a lot to get used to and cats get stressed with any change. Slowly add in the new litter over a week or two until it is completely transitioned. If the cat starts using outside of the box they are not ready to transition so put more of the old litter back. You may need to transition back and forth until you get to complete pine. Depends on the cat. Also I recommend having no less than 2 litter boxes for your cat. Mine would have accidents randomly and I couldn't figure out why even though I cleaned her box daily. Once I got a second box it never happened again. Most cats like to go poo or pee in separate boxes for some reason I've learned. Most specialty litters like walnut can be found at the big chain pet stores like petco or pet smart. If you can't find it try Amazon. You can try to just straight transition and see how it goes but be prepared for accidents and plan the space accordingly for easy clean up just in case. Be sure to praise the kitten with lots of love and treats if they are food motivated when ever they use the litter box to encourage use. This works well with scratchers too so they don't feel as inclined to use your furniture. With these methods you should be able to do a complete transition. If you use two or more boxes depending on how many cats you have be sure they all are on the same transition and don't let kitty outside as they will prefer to use the dirt or other material over the pine. Just a side note in case you were thinking about it, though I would recommend NEVER to declaw your cat due to the short and long term pain it causes I do not recommend this litter for declawed cats since thier paws are highly sensitive. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps! And congrats on your new kitten!

Any advice on how the first night should go? Should I limit the kitten to 1 floor? • @@milenashubas6306 I know the litter, I personally haven't tried it as it is quite expensive and with my own experience with all the powdered litters I figured it will be quite messy. It could be a good transition to get kitty used to the smell and color though. Im sure it would work just as well with odor control but I would imagine it will track everywhere as even the dissolved pellets can track if you are not keeping up with cleaning. For starting out I would keep the kitten on one floor with both boxes. Choose a space that will be most quiet. You can move the boxes just make sure to show them the new location. If it has a hard time with the new location you can start in the original and move it gradually over time to the new location so it won't be as stressful.

      @shannonr4360@shannonr43602 жыл бұрын
    • @@milenashubas6306 she will be lonely and scared the first week but should transition quickly. Be sure to give her lots of attention and even though it may be hard try not to baby her, meaning if you don't want to be woken up the rest of your life in the middle of the night from her crying ignore it. Same with feeding. Make it a schedule and don't give it to her until she is quiet. They learn quickly what behavior will get them what they want. You can leave the tv on with bird sounds from KZhead or just a show that has talking so she doesn't feel as alone. Dont leave it too loud so she can sleep or get away from the sound if she needs quiet time. Leave some of her favorite toys to play with even something that is interactive might be nice if she isn't afraid of it. Feed her before you leave and don't make a big deal out of it when you do leave. Give her some attention and play in the morning so she is satisfied and won't be full of as much energy to wreck the place but have some space before you go. When you come back don't make a big deal out of it. Just say hi if she comes up, ignore giving her too much attention the first 30 minutes then you can spend time with her playing and petting. This will help with separation anxiety.

And when i am asked to review those litters, I ask those questions and never get answers - specifically from Pretty Litter. So I cannot and will not support them. it's the same reason i cannot support scented - artificially scented litters.

I have a few big boxes next to eachother and find that the pellets are less messy than clay litter. Getting out of the shower and having litter stuck to my feet used to drive me crazy. There is zero dust and zero waste. At $6 for 40lbs it lasts 4 cats almost 2 months. I call that a win.

It's great for my asthma with ZERO dust, and even though some pellets get kicked out of the box, they are large enough to easily be swept up, even on a carpeted area, instead of granules working all the way into your carpet and pad. All their products are great. I went through a great deal of litter earlier on and I could never find anything that worked as well or tracked less. Even the earlier versions of litter before they developed Clump and Seal worked better that other cat litters on the market. Price was also a factor as A&M was more reasonable priced based on its performance than other litters that were expensive and didn’t work as well or at all. Glad to see A&M was in your top picks.
