  • AMAZING! I love how you included _why_ Burr was angry: it shows he was just human. He went through so much, yet history hates him. In the beginning , whenever he handed off Theodosia to her husband, it kind of broke me for unknown reasons. Whenever he passed the graveyard , that was another thing for me. Although the true spotlight is showing Burr's envy, because Hamilton got everything while Burr was still waiting. I think Burr deserved a lot of respect. His gravestone is just a plaque, whilst Hamilton has a memorial. Please recognize Burr. He was just human.

    • The reason why Burr is hated in national history is because he’s seen as the post revolutionary Benedict Arnold; he was involved in two secession coups. One to break off the Louisiana territory and form its own country out of it, and the other was to have New England secede. The latter one was the IRL reason why Hamilton was challenged to a duel, as Hamilton called him out on the conspiracy. Also Hamilton most likely raised his pistol into the sky before Burr was about to shoot so the death of Hamilton was likely much less of an accident. Burr may be a human but the musical represents him in a much better light than IRL history. He’s left with just a plaque while Hamilton gets a memorial because Hamilton never was involved in any attempts to directly betray his country and actually contributed a lot to the nation, unlike Burr who’s only major change in his lifetime was causing the 12th amendment to be passed.

  • This animation perfectly captures Burr's emotions. It shows his envy, yes, but it also portrays his anger, both towards Hamilton and the universe. He is misunderstood and misunderstands how things work, how Hamilton's life is. He thinks that Hamilton is an entity, like Death, like Life, like Love. In his mind, those are destructive, if they aren't used with limitations. To him, HAMILTON is destructive. "He takes and he takes and he takes". Burr believes that Hamilton never gives, never faces any judgement, and he is right, at least for the first act. He gets a woman that Burr liked as a wife. He takes the position of right hand man of Washington, while Burr has been working on achieving it for weeks. He makes mistakes, sure, but they don't come back to bite him. Even in the 2nd Act, Hamilton continues his "uphill climb". He becomes Secretary of Treasury, and although he has to leave his wife and kid alone, Elisa does a great job as a mother and raises his son excellently. He cheats on her, and it's only until the 3rd Act that consequences arrive. He starts to disagree with Burr, and loses his first friend, his first idol in New York. Hamilton is the lawful evil character, he tries to gain everything to further himself. He never helps others, and if he does, it's to serve his own cause. Burr is a neutral good character. He doesn't participate that much, but through his emotions, his experiences and some of his actions, we understand he wants to do good. Burr might be viewed as the villain in this story, but he is only one misguided soul, angry at the universe

  • I don't think people seem to realize that Burr is damaged. People don't seem to realize that Burr, a child who lost both his parents just like Alexander had a tough life. People don't seem to think back on that "When they died they left no instruction, just a legacy to protect." People don't seem to think that *history had its eyes on him* when he was simply a child. People don't seem to realize that Hamilton, someone who was simply an immigrant, someone who had no rank was doing better than him *ruined* him. People don't seem to realize that he lost everything. People don't seem to realize how horrible it is to watch someone with just pure talent overtake your hard work. He lost everything. He lost his parents. He lost Theodosia, the one love. He lost his child at sea. He watched as everyone went and lived their life and he was left in the dusk. People don't seem to realize that Burr was waiting. People don't seem to realize that Burr was calculating. People don't seem to realize that *this was Burr's breaking point.* People don't seem to realize that the only mistake he's made in this, the only goddamn mistake he's made in this whole musical is shooting Alexander. Alexander. The one man he was positive would shoot. Don't you dare call him a murderer. Don't you dare. Don't you dare not realize what he's been through. Don't you dare not think about this and just throw it in the back of your mind. He killed Hamilton. Hamilton died with Eliza's love and his story got told. Hamilton killed him. He killed *every reputation Burr had.* He ruined and devastated his hard work. To add salt to the wound, Hamilton was his friend. Hamilton was his rival, but his friend. The drinks. The laughs. Everything led up to that gunshot. Burr made a mistake. Hamilton made a choice.

I mean, Hamilton had his hard times, but he had the better part of life later on, then started taking more and more, and his line came true; he became unsatisfied *all* the time. Aaron's position became harsher, even as he tried to support Lafayette, Hamilton, Mulligan and Laurens. (Ugh now I'm getting really sentimental)

  • I think the sad thing about this song is that once Burr decided to start taking like he sees Hamilton doing (going around and spreading the word to people to vote for him), he loses, Hamilton makes Jefferson president. Once Burr starts playing the game of life, that’s when everything started to go downhill for him. It’s sad to see this, Burr is my favorite one and then seeing Burr’s face when Jefferson doesn’t make him Vice President is really heartbreaking. Idk maybe I’m overthinking this lmao

    @cringesicle7827@cringesicle78273 жыл бұрын
    • Technically Burr did become vice president, it's more like because of this, they made it so that, in the future, the vice president is elected along with the president, rather than the position going to whoever had the second most votes. One could say that he was the Vice President in name only, and was not in a position of any significance.

    • alemfi Ahhh, I see. Still kind of sad that he was technically Vice President but had no power or anything. Imagine being Vice President but not having any power over anything.

  • "I am the one thing in life I can control" - This tells you *so* much about Burr. He's lost so much, felt so powerless and he will *never* let himself feel that way again.

    @because_the_internet@because_the_internet3 жыл бұрын
    • That line was good, but to me the lines that most embody Burr, especially in contrast to Hamilton, are "My mother was a genius / My father commanded respect / When they died they left no instructions / just a legacy to protect" Unlike Hamilton, who came from nothing, has nothing to lose, and thus feels empowered to seize every opportunity that comes his way, Burr feels like he must always live life cautiously. He does have something to lose, he already has a "legacy to protect", so he will act with caution, waiting for absolute knowledge that he's making the right decision before he takes action. Except for the one time he acts impulsively...and thus securing him a legacy that he never wanted.

      @Christopher_TG@Christopher_TG3 жыл бұрын
    • @@Christopher_TG That's a great insight. I guess that's also what leads Hamilton to the low point of the Reynolds Pamphlet. If he'd followed Burr's philosophy and talked less he may have had the opportunity to deal with the issue privately, within his own family.

  • Watching these animatics and picking apart the scenes and lyrics really makes me relate to Burr and appreciate him even more. Here is a man who, in his own mind, has gone through hell. He sees the world as a cruel and uncontrollable place. The only way to get what he wants is through careful planning, patience, and self-control. Then along comes Hamilton, who has been through even worse hell than Burr, but has no sense of patience or self-control. He does the exact opposite of what Burr believes a rational man should do and somehow manages to steal everything Burr wants out from under him. And the worst part is that Hamilton doesn't even realize he's doing it, and that pisses Burr off more than anything. This animatic made me realize that more than even the original work did, and for that reason I consider it a masterpiece.

  • Just watched Hamilton the first time (of many) the other day, and broke down sobbing through this song as Lin-Manuel's writing and Leslie Odom Jr's singing reopened and perfectly articulated a twenty year old hurt. Lost both of my best friends from school young. The first was a beautiful soul and genuine candidate for sainthood, who's fight with leukemia ended during Christmas break our senior year. The other, who's greatest 'sin' was who she chose to love, killed scant weeks after she turned nineteen by a drunk driver. I'm left wondering why. Why didn't I join them in 2004, when by rights I should have? Why do I continue to survive, and I'm not even worthy of their memory, some of the mistakes I've made. If there's a reason I haven't seen it yet. To the owner of this channel, a beautifully done animatic. Keep up the good work. To you reading this, if you're still here to this point, may God, by whatever name you assign him (or her), bless and keep you.

  • Love doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes- Burr walked past rich people strolling by and a homeless guy stretching out against a wall in an alleyway. Two people so close, yet in such different situations. I don’t know if this was just for the background, or maybe it was intentional, keeping up with the lyrics, but if it is good job at incorporating it. I didn’t even notice it at first, and it’s a subtle detail, not as dramatic as like a gravestone or something.

    @juliusroman8616@juliusroman86164 жыл бұрын
    • Or perhaps the other meaning when the two rich people walk past Burr, they are heading towards the graveyard, and that’s the two people we see kneeling by the gravestone. Death doesn’t discriminate, it takes the rich and the poor. Another moral could be taken out of this, don’t judge someone by their looks. After all, Hamilton grew up to be rich, even though when he started out he had nothing.

  • I always forget how damn petty and jealous Burr was until I see these animatics. Honestly, it's just pathetic when you see somebody get angry at someone else because that person has the drive to just fight tooth and nail for the things they want, rather than sit around and wait for their life to improve without doing anything to further themselves. Like, I LOVE this animatic but you can see Burr get more and more upset the further he goes into the song, first at Hamilton being welcomed/liked by Lafayette, Hercules and John, then later getting promoted to aid de camp/lieutenant colonel by Washington, and then getting married to a woman he loves without having to hide their relationship. None of these things are bad, and Alexander didn't do anything /wrong/ in these moments, but Burr is still pissed off because, in his eyes, Alexander is being rewarded for being reckless, unrestrained, passionate and headstrong. Burr thinks he should be able to have these - friends and Washington's respect and a proper marriage to the woman he loves... but he doesn't take the initiative and so he gets no reward, and this only festers and turns into resentment for Alexander. And yes, I know that Burr went to Washington wanting to help, but if you look at his lines during "Right-Hand Man", it makes sense why he wasn't chosen. Burr tries to go for flattery, and inadvertently ends up insulting George's leadership skills ("I admire how you keep firing on the British from a distance", which could be seen as desperate and cowardly, and "how to fight instead of fleeing West" while also telling George he looks forward to seeing his strategy play out), meanwhile Hamilton is honest about what he wants from the beginning, tells Washington he doesn't particularly want to be a secretary, he wants to fight, he wants to earn his happy ending and get glory or die trying, but the moment Washington manages to convince him to take the job, he has a TON of ideas to offer; the services of his three friends, using the art of war (planting spies/turning people against the king) and readily agreeing to write Congress and get them the resources they need. Washington didn't want a "Yes man" who would stand by his side and praise him, he wanted the opposite; a guy who would tell him what he was doing wrong, how to improve and offer ideas on bettering their odds. Meanwhile, Burr didn't really offer any solutions up front, he was just there to kiss the General's ass. I'd also like to point out that Burr continuously labels Hamilton a bastard, immigrant, son of a whore, etc. and all sorts of other unflattering titles. Burr came from a very religious family, so I have to wonder whether or not it's not just meant to be a running joke but Mr. Miranda pointing out that for as nice as Burr seems at a glance, he has some ingrained bigotry and deep seeded anger in him (see, Washington On Your Side - "This /immigrant/ isn't someone we chose.") as if Alexander's illegitimate/foreigner status means he shouldn't have these opportunities to be happy and successful. It just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not saying Burr hates Alexander for these traits, just that it is quite telling how with every intro throughout the play he starts getting angrier and more insulting (starts out stating facts, Hamilton is a bastard after all, and Rachel Faucette WAS incorrectly labelled a whore for having children outside of marriage, the second time he calls him an obnoxious, loud mouth bother but still acts somewhat humorous about it, and by the near end of the play he's spitting the words like they're venom, clearly meant to insult rather than just inform). Burr just seems like he thinks that it's an insult to him personally that Hamilton, who grew up poor, underprivileged, without a father and raised by a "whore" from some forgotten island, is doing so much better in life than him, a proper gentleman who's parents were married and pious, religious, and from good blood. Hamilton's difficult childhood left him with a drive to not just succeed, but SURVIVE; Alexander is loud, fiercely intelligent, and extremely passionate and unapologetic about who he is. He's in the spotlight because of his demanding presence, and I think Burr resents him for having the guts to chase what he wants, since Hamilton has no family legacy and thus doesn't need to worry about ruining his reputation to follow his dream, whereas Burr hesitates in case he fucks up, he doesn't want to ruin the legacy his family left behind. It makes me sad because Burr and Hamilton are a lot alike; they both think of their legacy, were both deprived of their parents at a young age, both are not exactly the best socially (Alex is a rambling awkward mess at 19 and Burr doesn't seem to have any friends - even Jefferson and Madison seem to openly dislike and taunt him despite working together), yet they're so different they had almost no chance of ever really being close because of personality conflicts. Edit: Fixed spacing, elaborated with more detail on my thoughts and observations about the dynamic between the two characters.

Everything Burr wanted or had Alex took by taking action and Burr couldn't. Burr couldn't woo a Schuyler but Alex did, Burr couldn't get the role as right hand man but Alex did. Alex pretty much took what Burr obviously was wanting with ease. I might be rambling on but your animatic just portrayed that so well to me I love it. He was jealous of Hamilton's ability to speak whenever he wanted and about everything he was thinking. His mistake was shooting him. But we have to remember in what time the story is set. And then he regrets his actions. Straight away. And the only thing he thought was not leaving his family. That's why he didn't want to die. Hamilton loved his country first, Burr loved his family.

    • +Luna Bellsley I’ll have to disagree with him not being a bad person. In history he actually bragged about killing Hamilton and made jokes about it. Not only that, but he was almost charged with treason for planning to steal some Louisiana Territory along with someone else (forgot his name) but that failed. He was released and fled to England and tried to persuade Napoleon to invade America. And the last couple years of his life he remarried a wealthy women and was lynching off her wealth causing them to get divorced. (Funny enough the divorce lawyer was none other than Alexander Hamilton Jr.) He died bitter and only then did he realize that “the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me”. In the musical in may have seemed that he was good and regretted his actions immediately, but he actually didn’t feel bad until decades after.

What really kills me the most is that while Hamilton prioritized his reputation & career more than his family-and essentially got his son killed by not forcing him to back out of that (dumb and immature) duel-Burr cared about his Theodosias more than anything else in the world…and lost them both, along with everything else in his life (because of Hamilton).

That moment when Burr looks to the sky that so perfectly juxtaposes his usual looking forward or downwards on "When everyone who loves me has died". Whereas someone else could have gone the easy route and just show his family again, you instead take this opportunity to give us this beautiful moment. Thank you. 3. The blackout right after "Wait for it" is perfect. Lin has said himself that the best way to demonstrate Burr's waiting is to literally make the audience wait for the chorus. In the transition to animation, especially animatics where a single picture has to tell the story for seconds at a time, the lack of picture perfectly preserves the spirit of this song from its original medium. 4. Burr screaming "I am an original" at the cast and your execution of that moment was really flippin fantastic in my opinion. 5. Making us watch Alexander's achievments through Aaron's eyes, especially when Burr raises his glass on "raises the stakes" was clever in making us understand Burr's frustrations, and also adding to the song with your work. 6. Last thing, I know I've already mentioned it, but your background work is incredible. The small things like Burr noticing the people mourning, or how more people are gathered around Hamilton instead of Burr when the spotlights are on them. Just amazing. Oh my god. This was fucking incredible.
