  • my grandpa served in the vietnam war and he still tells me about all the lives lost on both sides, the things he was forced to do and the things he cannot tell me about. He also told me about how he witnessed his brother get slowly torn apart by the tiger pit spikes, he lost so many things in that war and when he came back he discovered that his then wife was unfaithful. He told me that at that point he was questioning to himself "whats one more murder?" and that he had a small bit of humanity left in him that made him move to a different city instead of getting revenge. He met his now wife and began drinking heavily when he couldn't find a job. He felt as though he had been forgotten and that all the things he had lost had been for nothing at all. At that point he would get into frequent fights and come home with the skin on his knuckles peeled back and bloodied. He then began stealing things to earn a living and was caught and sentenced to prison for 3 years. When he got out he was surprised to find out that even after all that had happened his wife had stuck by his side, and that's when he realized he needed to be better. He got the most awful and difficult job he could find, made a very small amount of money at first but as the years went on he grew and grew, until eventually he could afford a house in a good neighborhood. He still has sleepless nights and remembers the hell he went through, but he says that if all the pain and suffering brought him to where he is now, it was worth it. And that his history was a series of broken and cracked stairs that finally brought him to the most well polished and beautiful stair of all.
