We Almost Got a Battlefield Game Set In 1920s Chicago

Battlefield Hardline developers Visceral Games actually pitched a Battlefield-esque game set in 1920s Chicago during the Prohibition. Chicago, as it was called, would have pit gangsters against each other for control of the streets in infantry-only combat and limited vehicles. Would you play it?

  • Now that you mention it A Chicago DLC would have been pretty cool in BF1 considering how it takes place right after WW1, moreover a DLC for other post WW1 conflicts like the Mexican & Irish Civil Wars in BF1 would also be pretty cool. Honestly even in 2022 I would still prefer more content added to BF1 over the new titles.

    • It would've fit too because we got the Russian Civil War DLC which is set in 1919-1920's right after WWI so a Chicago DLC wouldn't have been too far out there. Hell maybe they could have thrown in other civil wars/revolutions that happened after or during WWI like the Mexican Revolution and such. There's so much they could have done with Battlefield 1 still, it honestly deserved more content and DLC's. It was one of the last if not the last truly good Battlefield game in the franchise.

Bfv historically wasn’t the best, nor did I enjoy the heavy micro transaction phase EA was going through, but aside from that it generally was a fun game especially with the pacific dlc that sadly left the game with people wanting more after it released. Bf 2042 was just generally bad, lack of content and bugs, the game also felt like it was way more optimized to be on next gen in order to have fun; the game graphically somehow looks worse than bf3 half the time, almost looking like a bad company game.

    • @@mikeberry5016 Honestly I enjoyed the small campaign of bf1, little glimpses of some of the countries that took part of Ww1 was kinda cool, and that they all let you test out the weapons and vehicles that you’ll see when you play multiplayer is nice touch too. Though mixed opinions on the destruction, while it isn’t anything in comparison to bf4 I still thought it was pretty good, but yeah they do digress the more you play each battlefield title. I agree with what you say though, sucks that companies just let the consumers play an unfinished game that’s pretty much a beta; and with time they try and patch in the game that’s already in a dead state.

  • I always wanted a Battlefield Interwar game, that takes place in all the major conflicts. For example: Polish-Soviet War, Rif War, Chaco War, Second Italo-Ethiopian War, Spanish Civil War, Second Sino-Japanese War and so on. Having a Mafia DLC that takes place in the 1920's would have been an awesome addition.

    • I always get the vibe that BF1 was originally conceptualized as an alternate history Polish-Soviet war, where it draws in the League of Nations and the US. Like a WW1 NATO. I think they wanted to make a scenario parallel to our current events, but reskinned in the 1920s. For that matter, I also believe BFV started pre-production as a Cold War/Operation Unthinkable 1950s/1960s game. In the end, EA didn't give them the creative freedom to play around with alternate scenarios.

    • Given you weren't around at the time, I'll let you know that when it launched, it was vehemently hated specifically because it abandoned the military setting in exchange for the "cops vs robbers" crap - there's no way to fit like 60% of the combined arms combat that makes BF "Battlefield" in a "civilians vs cops" setting because there's no way for the police or cartels to use MBTs, attack choppers, or fighter jets without massively suspending disbelief.

It should have definitely been called "Hardline" by itself. The other half of the issue Hardline had was it's CoD-like mindset to map design and DLC weapon distribution; it didn't feel like it deserved the BF title and isn't the kind of thing the older BF community is interested in.

Considering how much the Art Deco style is loved by gamers, that's yet another factor that could gin up interest. Considering the last game DICE made that was a true success from start to finish was BF1 and it continues to be one of their best games to date, as well as people reflecting on how underrated the gameplay of hardline is all these years later, I think it would find quite the success. A campaign would do them some good too, have you seen LA Noir? Imagine that but with more gunplay and throw in an alt history fight on the Hindenburg that echo's the ending to friends in high places and you've got yourself quite the game

  • Maybe the concept was that _"Chicago: Prohibition"_ would be BF1's Hardline. Thus BF4 > Hardline > BF1 > Chicago You know, some part of me thinks the 2042 universe could evolve into a modern version of this theme. Perhaps the civilization collapse + devastating invasions by RU/CN could make a sort of _Homefront: The Revolution_ type scenario. Instead of cops versus robbers, you'd have occupation forces vs rebel militias. Draws a lot of inspiration from real life.

  • I could imagine a conquest style game mode where the objectives are not flags, but breweries and stills hidden throughout the city or even a few countryside maps. The objective is to capture and run the stills for as long as possible, while holding back the rival gangsters. This will earn your team money (in place of tickets). Team with the most cash wins. Or perhaps the stills generate a barrel of whiskey or beer worth a large amount of points at regular intervals once captured and operating. These barrels must be transported back to the hideout to earn points. I could even imagine a small scale squad VIP mode where a certain member of the squad is designated as the target. His team must protect him for the match against the enemy team, acting as a hit squad. Essentially it would function like the Escort game mode from Onward VR.

Only issue was the battle rifle+shield meta that sweats would constantly use. Moving onto Chicago, I would've definitely been enthused to see it follow after BF1, which makes sense in following a timeline. Having watched Boardwalk Empire, I would like to see how the battles in the game would play out with weapons of that era. It feels like we kinda missed a spot to hit there especially since games set in the 20's are few and far between.

  • I was a big fan of Dice when Mirrors Edge came out. When Battlefield 3 came out, I couldn't stop playing the beta. I bought Battlefield 4 Premium over 4 times. When Battlefield Hardline came out, I hated it until they added way more guns and the gun customization in 2017. Which was the most advanced customization I've seen until Escape from Tarkov. But even then it's still more advanced because of the color customization. And it has gun features still absent in Call of Duty. Like adjusting the range of the reticle on red dots and all scopes, as seen in Escape From Tarkov. Allot of people missed it, but Battlefield Hardline in 2017 was ahead of every single fps game short of a few pc exclusives. Even when COD Warzone came out, it didnt provide anywhere near the same amount of features Hardline had. I remember allot of people complained about Battlefield 4 release, but came around when it got corrected and expanded. Hardline didnt get the same attention, despite it did the same. But no matter how much I like Hardline, it was a no brainer; Hardline was a harbinger of things to come. Battlefield 4 brought what almost no other fps brought, destructibility and levolution. You would think that with those two major concepts in their pocket (and the plethora of armament that is surpassed by no other game to this day), Battlefield would leave everyone in the dust for decades. Because to this day, neither Escape From Tarkov, Arma or Call of Duty has been able to pass that benchmark. Arma and Escape From Tarkov has way more patient consumers than Call of Duty and they can't pump out as much content Battlefield 4 and Hardline with all the time in the world. Arma's only saving grace being open to fanbased modding. Which can make any game immortal. I would like to see some serious investigative journalism into what went wrong there. Because Dice had it in the bag, it was on auto-touchdown. And Vicereal had the same magic because they ran the same playbook. Yeah, they fumbled at first, but they took a very important part of Battlefield to the next level.

  • 1920s Battlefield would have tickled me entirely. I love historical shooters, and the prohibition era was ripe with legends and myths surrounding the gangs, moonshiners, mob, and police themselves. I believe they could have made something magical with the idea. Especially with a gamemode surrounding the destruction of casks and barrels of liquor. Or even a "Hot pursuit" game mode where the objective is to have moonshine runners being attacked by police while trying to deliver their cargo to a set location on the opposite end of the map. obviously you would have to make maps specific to this gameplay, being in heavily under developed roads, and backwoods where the cars wouldn't drive as fast as possible to keep themselves from wrecking destroying their car and cargo. Even maybe a game mode specifically in a "Kill the King" type mode where a team of mobsters have to stay alive and defend their Mob boss for a set timeframe where the round will end if he is killed or survives. The whole idea of it running on the Hardline engine is an interesting concept given you can sit in the windows and shoot from your car, much like the real mob counterparts in the 20s. All in all I think Battlefield made a big mistake not furthering or developing the idea beyond the initial pitch.

  • Hardline was a good concept with execution issues particularly in the story department. Having them work on their own IP would have been the way to go giving the team more creative slack. I agree that the lack of a story would be a huge missed opportunity.

  • That would actually be kind of sick, a hardline esque game with a story set in modern Mexico would be kind of cool as well. Fighting the cartels with the Mexican military and DEA would lead to some absolute madness. The troubles would be another interesting one albeit a very touchy subject for many, it would have to be handled in collaboration with historians and people very knowledgeable on the subject. That whole period of history is basically untouched by the gaming industry. But carrying out raids on the IRA and UVF in rural Ireland would be one hell of a unique experience.

  • Mane Battlefield Hardline was majorly misunderstood, sure if abandoned the Military Vehicles, Weapons, and even Aircraft...... however because of this I felt like everything that was included was super polished. I hardly had issues running this game, never had any problems with the weapons, hit markers, destruction and gameplay. Although the vehicles where a bit dingy at times, especially driving the swat cars or the fast sport cars, that was it though! The helicopters seemed very polished and so did the armored vehicles. I still say Hardline was fantastic and was an amazing demonstration of Dice's potential on polishing their gameplay and content. I still stand by Battlefield Hardline. BF4 is cool.

  • I would definitely be interested in this, regardless of if it had the Battlefield name attached. Hardline was a good spinoff of BF, spin-offs (from both a business and creative perspective) exist for the purpose of experimentation & risk management, after all bad company was a spin-off and it is pushed BF into a more arcade shooter direction. people dislike hard-line for being a spin-off that does exactly what a spin-off should do, not really much of a surprise, the greater surprise should (emphasis on should) be EA's incompetence (at not realising the point of a spin-off), but it really isn't.
