After another blowout in game 2 between the Carolina Hurricanes & New Jersey Devils. We break down how the Hurricanes have been able make the fastest team in hockey, look like they're in quick sand. With players like Jack Hughes & Jesper Bratt, the Hurricanes have found a way to completely neutralize them through games 1 and 2.

  • As a Canes fan, I am extremely happy with the first two games, but all they did was hold serve. I expect a totally different Devils team to come out for game 3, the Canes better be ready. I also hope the canes aren't drinking the kool-aid with all the articles, videos, and stories talking about how dominant they've been. It's hard work, focus, and discipline that has been helping, just as much as skill. If they slack off, they will be the ones looking awful. Hopefully Brind'amour has them them focused and ready to go into a hostile environment and a game in which the devils are likely getting 5 power plays.

  • I'm a Devils fan, hats off to the Canes, they've played fantastic. I still don't think the series is over though, this Devils team has had a knack for coming back this year. My issue is that NJ tends to look for the pass instead of taking shots. I just want then to put pucks on net and see what happens.

    • Very far from over. They have to find a way to solve that breakout & Neutral zone problem. New Jersey can’t be themselves & get Ozone time because when they finally get possession, they want to make good on it. Hence the hesitancy to just fire the puck. Different mentality when you have possession for a large chunk of the game. When you don’t, you want to hang onto it lol

With the Devils being a young inexperienced team against a team like the canes that make it so hard to generate anything coming out of your own end they had no chance of winning those two games.

    • I think the Canes fans are the friendliest crowd towards fans of most opposing teams. I usually chat up opposition fans: complimenting them on the new team jerseys, asking them about their hometowns, and wishing them a safe trip back home. I moved to Carolina from New York about 30 years ago and absolutely love it here. There are a zillion things to love about New York, but friendly sports fans aren’t high on that list. I also lived in New Jersey for a few years back in the 1980’s, an was a bit of a Devils fan for those years-and Jersey people are a bit friendlier. But nothing beats the atmosphere here in Raleigh. From the tailgating, to the thunderous fan outbursts-it’s now sweet Carolina to me.

  • The Devils (according to national broadcast) had the puck 53% of the time in game 2. Unfortunately for them most of that time it was in their own zone. Same broadcast said "its like there are 5 Brind'Amours on the ice" Tenacious fore check, sped through the neutral zone and active Defense in the O. Simple... on paper

Lastly many teams have had failures and have had to learn lessons before winning a championship. New Jersey will be fine. They weren't even expected to be a playoff team and they have made to the second round.

  • Jersey is a super young team that really overachieved this season and that's a good thing because this will be a great teaching lesson for them if nothing else. All great championship teams and star players have had to go through the tough times to learn what the playoffs are all about and its a different monster in a 7 game series. Jersey is definitely a skilled and fast team but they will need to add some size and grit to the roster down the road, you just have to have that in some form for the post season. Plus time will also allow those younger guys to grow and mature physically and mentally. Going through this experience will pay off in the end

  • As a Canes fan, it comes down to 2 factors imo: 1. Stick-checking from EVERY Canes player in the lineup - Where NJ had space against the Rangers to operate & get up to speed with the puck, Carolina is invested in bothering the Devils sticks for 200 feet of ice. NJ can't get up to speed if they can't get the space to handle the puck. 2. The Forecheck - On most of the Canes' truly potent possessions, they're getting the puck deep into the Devils' zone & grinding the game to a halt against the boards with good help at the point to prevent breakaways on turnovers. NJ has to operate in a grindy, tiring game at the boards that Carolina is specifically conditioned to thrive at. After 60 minutes of that effort from the Canes, Jersey has been gassed at the end of games.

  • All boils down to Roddy running a tight system. Despite the injuries, this team isn't really about one player, a couple players, or even a specific group, it's about the system. This system happens to work really well against the Devils. I knew when I watched game 7 Rangers/Devils that the Devils were not going to get breakouts like they constantly did against the Canes, the tight defense shuts down the whole offense that the Devils are built around. Whether or not that will translate to continuing to dominate at Prudential or not is yet to be seen, the Devils have a ton of skill and there were some seriously dangerous moments in the first period of game 2 for the Canes that could have changed the tempo for the rest of the game, that being said, I have serious doubts that the Devils will advance past this round, like you said, this is a very different team than the Rangers and it's one that simply matches up better against them. I'm a Canes fan, so obviously I'm pretty biased here, but this has been my take since before the series started, had Rangers won game 7 and we were playing them right now, we'd be seeing a very different series play out.

  • Makes alot more sense now when you break it down like that. When it went 4 on 4 in Game 2 i was wondering why the Canes were nursing the puck and playing so conservatively to prevent a turnover. I guess the main reason is because they knew theyd get smoked by the Devs speed in 4 on 4. The other reason may just be to frustrate NJ and prevent them from being able to play the game they want to play it and dictate the speed they desired. Wound up working for them because Jordan Staal scored on that half breakwlaway because of it.

  • Canes and Devils both do the 1-2-2 but the Canes are just better at it. I have a lot of respect for the Canes and their fans. I don't expect a long series with the way they've been playing vs NJ. With the Rangers you could tell the Devils had them beat 5v5 but this Carolina team is an entirely different beast. They watched those Rangers Devils games with the time off, they studied for this test and so far they're acing it. I'm going to stay hopeful but can't really see that Round 1 magic happening again here -- they might pick up one or two games if they can adjust but this is a deep hole vs Carolina.

We don’t have the all star offensive weapons like other teams especially with all the players we have out, but then again we never really have since he’s taken over as HC and yet we make the playoffs every year. But when they lose holllllyyyy do they lose. Every game they’ve lost they looked so out of sync. Carless passes, shaky goaltending, turning over the puck in the O-zone or just straight up missing the puck. It’s crazy that they won the series against the rangers with 2 4-0 shutouts and still ended the series with same amount of goals as the rangers. We’ll see how they react to this deficit, but the canes notably have a much better and consistent defensive system than the rangers, so I think they might be in some trouble now.

  • As a Devils fan, I still have confidence in the guys to come back in the series. They already did it once in these playoffs alone AND game 3 and 4 we're on the road. This time, they are going to NJ. I think they are still learning how to exploit this team and a new system all together from what the Rangers showed in Round 1. The top guys in particular need to get going and I think they'll make some really good adjustments that will get the offense going and get the Devils back in the series. To me, this series is far from over

  • If you only looked at the first 3 games of the Ranger series, you would think the Devils didn't belong in the Playoffs. Maybe we stop judging the Devils or any team on 3 games?

  • Of course, going up 2-0 against the Devils (or any other team for that matter) doesn't guarantee anything. In playoff hockey, there are never any guarantees until you get that fourth win of the series. Still, as someone who is rooting for Carolina in this series, I would rather see them leading 2-0, than see any other series score that could be possible after just two games.

  • Found this on 5/12. Spoiler alert. It was easily over. Great break down. The Devils are young and have a lot of skill. Once they put how to beat this into their arsenal, they’ll be a great team, unfortunately. Let’s go Rangers.

  • I just think they are inexperienced at playoff hockey is the issue lets see what happens at home when the crowd is on there side they also are too small the devils need to get a few checking players like a foward and defenseman . Which isnt hard to come up with they size is getting them manhandled. This is all gravy this season they went from a last place team to the 3rd best team in hockey its all up from here

  • I like both teams style of play & like most of there players & coaches. Even at 2-0 it hasn't been a bad watch. That said the Devils can come back. They're going home, they did this before, they're a good team, but the Hurricanes are not going to make the same mistake the Rangers did & try to run with the Devils. The Canes are going to play there way until the bitter end. It's uo to these upstart kids from Jersey to play the way they like to play. If this series isn't tied 2-2 after game four it's probably over in 5. If the Devils lose the series this season is still a success with valuable experience. If the Hurricanes lose this series the season is a letdown. The only successful season for the Canes is a Cup run after the previous 2-3 seasons playoff runs.

  • What can you say about the youth and inexperience of the second year Kraken? WTF! Please explain to me hockey aficionados, how can two back to back expansion teams, Golden Knights and Kraken advance so deep in the playoffs after only being a team in existence for 1 or 2 seasons. Never happens in the NFL, MLB, or NBA. I found out that the 1971 Milwaukee Bucks with Lew Alcindor, Oscar Robertson, Bobby Dandridge, Jon McGlocklin, and Lucius Allen were the quickest ever to win a professional championship. They did it in only 3 seasons. However, this is still extremely infuriating for sports betters like myself who keep anticipating an expansion team collapse. Two expansion franchises in the span of 6 years have made it this deep into the playoffs. What’s up with hockey? Lol
