    • One thing I noticed was his timbre was very airy. Tom would have been the best pick if he had turned because the amount of the soul he gave. At the same time he dropped the key cause he can’t get that high. I think he hit like an A4 at the pinnacle and it’s an A5 or A6. He has soul behind his voice so ballads are his friend, but one ballad does not a singer make.

    • None of them did it justice. The distinctive voice of the original artist that perfectly fits the grittiness and despair of the lyrics is everything in this song. There are only a handful of people on the planet that could possibly do this song justice because that's a voice that can't be imitated, and it's not a song that's conducive to restyling or re-imagining.

  • Thanks for this video. I did this song, at 17, at a spring concert in high school, fortunately with two guitarists (lead & bass) and two organists, one of whom could just rip it. They both could, but Mark was the lead. I was so nervous, when I stepped forward and adjusted the mike to be 'higher', it almost fell into the orchestra pit. And one of the most popular girls in school, who did not think much of me at all, started to point and snicker as I almost dropped it. I then focussed on her. I'm not bragging here, I could sing, and I wanted to shake her up - which I did. My pals played beautifully. I was later requested to sing this at a supper club, and dinner for the governor. It did change things for me in school, but not so much. I loved singing anywhere I could do it. I can't sing at all today, but we get old. Glad I found this. Good memories, albeit late in the evening and with wine.

    • @@Crossword131 The song strikes me as the regret of a son who turns out like the father he despised. That doesn't lend itself well to being sung by a woman unless the house of the rising sun is a brothel instead of a gambling den. The lady from Holland did a much better job. When she sang "it's been the ruin of many a poor boy, and god I'm know I'm one", she sang of herself being the ruin of many a poor boy as she is part of the establishment. That's a new variation. But I still think Matt Eaves was the best. That last lady was just shouting.

  • In 1979 in Clearwater Florida I was at a club on Cleveland St. that isn't there any more. It was a small venue, not more than maybe 60 or so people in the audience. The M.C. introduces the next performer by only saying it was his first time on stage. In walks this old guy, looked about 80 going on a hundred. he was around six foot six inches tall and lanky. He wore a white dress shirt and a loose skinny grey tie like was popular in the 1950's. His skin was like old leather that had been left out in the rain too many times and in the sun way too long and he had tattoos he got when he was in the navy, in what was originally called The Great War. He took the stage and handed the mike to the sound guy and said he didn't need it. He sat down on the stool, the house lights dimmed and he took out his harmonica. He was right. He didn't need the mike. He belted out this song in a thundering New Orleans French accent like nothing I have heard before or since. He sang every note pitch perfect. He sang it with a thousand year old soul. The hair on my arms stood on end. Then he sang it in French. Every place where the Animals had an instrumental interlude, he accompanied himself on that harmonica deep and bluesy. He finished in English again. For about ten almost awkward seconds there was absolute silence before we all burst into applause and a standing ovation. Then, almost as though he'd been caught intruding on a private party, he quietly walked off the stage. I'd heard later that evening that he'd just gotten out of the Florida State Prison the week before and had been there since 1920. Seemed he'd stolen a pig from the wrong person. His was the absolute most authentic performance of any song I had ever heard sung by anyone. About a month later I read his obituary in the Clearwater Sun.

    • Amy Blessing I’d argue he’s the most soulful of this group of singers, if he was in America he probably would have been picked up by Blake Shelton, or Cee lo(when he was still on the show), or even pherell would be a good coach for him due to his soulful style. However his voice type is severely limiting, he’d likely only be able to sing songs similar to this one(which while there are a lot of them, it’s still limiting to be a one trick pony in terms of musical stylings), which that alone makes him a harder singer to work with, he’s got a killer voice of course, great soul and sound, but he’s hard to work with based on his voice type, that’s likely the reason he wasn’t picked up by a coach in the UK

But there is a handful of songs - literally a handful - that were written and sang by the right person with the right voice and the right feeling and the right band at the right time, and any cover can only make it less.
