Deku Is An AWFUL Main Character | My Hero Academia Analysis

I love My Hero Academia, but Izuku Midoriya, the main character, kind of falls flat for me. I don't think he's pushed enough in any human way (in ways other than fighting and physical strength) and I think he's kind of bland compared to other, more complex main characters. Here I break down his character and why I think it falls kind of flat, and how he might be fixed.

  • My biggest issue with deku is that despite wanting so desperately to be a hero, he did NOTHING to make that happen before the story. No training, no conditioning, no martial arts training, nothing. It makes it seem like, despite showing that he was willing to put his life on the line for it, he just didn't give a shit.

  • When you brought up Midoriya's quirklessness, it reminded me of this fanfic called 'Deku? I think he's some pro'. It's part of the For Want of a Nail series. In it he doesn't receive One For All and actually goes on to become a hero without a quirk. I loved it because it seemed like the anime kinda brushes off his being quirkless after he received a quirk and the fanfic goes into detail about how hard it is to be quirkless in a society that practically revolves around quirks. The same series also has an entry where Izuku says fuck it and becomes a quirkless villain called 'Mastermind'. I actually find myself reading and enjoying these stories more than the anime in fact. And now I guess I understand why. Everyone was written well enough except for poor Izuku

  • Deku's biggest flaw isnt even his personality, is how the universe bends around him and ruins what he should have been, instead of the underdog hes first introduced as, he gets god like powers from the best of the best , in the first season, then he only gets more overpowered as the show goes. also, the side characters have more depth than deku, so thats a problem.

    • If you think that the superficials side characters of MHA have more depth than Deku, you have a reading comprehension problem. Deku is not a conventional MC of a shonen nekketsu, he has a not very common personality for this type of shows. It by far better than all the tropes of side characters in this show (MHA), but I understand that the corny anime fanbase underestimates this characters and said things like this. You only generalize the character, you don't analyze anything.

  • Deku was liked for being the "underdog," and we all love to root for the underdogs, but now he's not the underdog anymore. Hes just a "dog" to the system. Even having gained Allmight's quirk I would have loved to see him use his "privilege" to improve the lives of other quirkless and inspire them. Its almost like he is becoming Allmight, the same Allmight who was once quirkless himself and told a previously quirkless Deku he could never be a hero without a quirk. Like the message from Deku's characterization is "you cant be a hero without power and if one power isnt enough then you can just use another." They make it seem like theyre promoting togetherness and teamwork, "no hero can do it alone," then constantly showcase Deku surpassing/bodying everyone and how he can "do ot all on his own," people who have years of experience learning their quirks. We only really notice the other characters now because theyre more interesting, not because they're getting any spotlight, nothing focused on them anyways. And sure some of class 1A has had their own arcs and family drama, but Deku was at the center of each one, yes he's the main character but if we're focusing on the Todoroki family struggles we dont really need Deku, if youre there to support your friend then support your friend not "steal the show." The manga does a better job at not completely focusing on him during some of them but its not much better than the anime. I was literally cheering for Deku during the sports festival and now... I'm not even interested, we all know "this is the story of how i become the #1 hero" so the ending is set. Its not even Satisfying when he masters a new Quirk... Cause its not a matter of "how" its a matter of "when." We watch the show and read the manga for the other characters, and we only care about Deku to see how close he is to his dream

    • (TL;DR at the bottom)He's in his first year of UA. What privilege does he have? He's not swaying crowds or anything, he's just a hero student. Second, i don't know where people get this idea that the quirkless are discriminated against. You can assume sure but it's all headcannon. I say this because every time someone makes fun of Deku it's because he wants to be a hero. One like All Might especially. It's never stated it's like a disability that people make fun of but that Izuku with his quirklessness still wants to be a hero. We have no idea how the rest of the world views quirklessness. Third, about the theme. Izuku wants to be a hero like All Might not just a "hero". All Might is right in saying Izuku cannot be the Symbol of Peace without a quirk because have you seen the power of a flick of One For All? All Might doesn't say "Quirkless can become heroes like me!" he says "You can become and here's my quirk to do so." Is it a bit more bleak to say quirkless people can't be heroes like All Might? Yeah, but it's realistic. See my earlier statement of a flick of OFA. Horikoshi would either have to make it that Izuku somehow becomes the Symbol of Peace while quirkless or have him change his dream. One is straight unrealistic and the other is way worse for your theme. Imagine Naruto is like I can't actually be a Hokage, I should be an advisor or something. Not motivating at all. I think it's better that we have something like "Use your chances to the best of your abilities" that MHA gives. TL;DR. What privilege does he have? Second, Give me proof the quirkless are discriminated against and it's isn't jut because Izuku wants to be a hero. I'll wait. Third, Izuku cannot be the type of hero he wants to be without a quirk. Fourth, That's better than having the theme to be to change your dreams for something realistic.

Horikoshi is someone who can build up a massively flawed hero world but he didn't flesh out these plot points. Even though Deku has stated that all men aren't born equal he follows regulation that don't help everyone. His desire to become the Nr 1 hero is a responsibility that Deku would still need to comprehend. Ever since Deku received a quirk that made him lose his uniqueness. Deku also doesn't seems to be open to reforming his villains. The spinoff manga vigilantes is actually what Deku's story should have been.

Nezu, aizawa, all might, and his mom never do more than say "nuuu stahp" a MILLION times. Theres no consequences, suspension, expulsion, therapy--nothing And then when we get the setup of Deku having a quirk thats going to destroy him, a setup that, at sone point, is going to FORCE him to change or be forever disabled...and he gets 7 other powers that fix it all, AND that he masters in like two months. • I hate takes like these because they're so ignorant. Like, yea fanfics can surpass the original story but that's props to the guys that made it. It's not why something is bad. They over 300,000 fanfics of mha, makes sense that some of them are written by some talented people. Second, Upload schedules for fanfics just don't exist or are not nearly as harsh as Shounen jump ones. Fanfic authors sometimes post every other month or not at all for years. If we were forced into those hours, I doubt our work would be as good as Horikoshi's. Third, and the biggest one. It's so easy to modify and change stuff as supposed to making your own. When starting out a fanfic you already have a rich, diverse set of characters that you don't have to build up for the audience to care about. If All Might was to die at the start of a fanfic, I would be upset but if that was the stat of MHA, I wouldn't give to shits. See why OC's are usually notoriously bad in fanfics now?

  • In defense of Deku’s character: I believe his motivations does come from a human place, idealism or childhood fantasy, as children most us would see something on TV or in the real world and be like, I wanna be that when I grow, (most likely cause it looked cool) Deku was denied and insulted for his dream for most of his life and then is suddenly given the chance to achieve it through all might. Problem is he learns that his dream job isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, he sees many of flaws within this hero society: selfish Heroes only caring about popularity and status, the failed trainees that slip through the cracks of the system, and most of all how society creates its own villains. Through these experiences he gains a wider perspective on his dream of “being a hero to everyone.” He realizes that it’s not just the citizens and even other heroes that need saving but the villains too. Most of them people that got screwed over by society similar to him, it doesn’t excuse their actions by any means, but by learning the stories of the victims he can help make changes to society to slow of stop the creation of more monsters, that’s how he’ll surpass allmight, whose presence dissuaded monsters, Deku reforms them and stops them before they show up. And briefly on the topic of class 1A, the series has been clear in showing that society can’t stand on the back of one pillar else the entire thing crumbles when that pillar is gone, thus the importance of other rising heroes that Deku has trained with and inspired. Thanks for reading if bothered to.😂

    @JDWalker495@JDWalker4958 ай бұрын
    • Except whatever you said is either never expanded upon, more than maybe a chapter or is left too shallow. You can argue his motivations come from childhood fantasy, but the issue is after seeing the good and the bad side of the hero society he never questions it. The most we know about his motivation is that he is inspired by that one video of allmight, we never get to know why that video is something that he holds in such a high regard other than he saved people...okay? And what made him think unconditional heroism is cool considering his ass was bullied. Hell kirishima has more well developed reason to believe in unconditional heroism than deku, bakugou's reason for loving allmight was fleshed out better than deku. The problem is even after getting allmight's power and seeing the darker sides of hero society, his motivations are never questioned and his ideals are never once challanges The story tries to sell the fact that hero society can't be supported by one piller, and then proceeds to have the entire freaking war arc centred around super deku and hyper shiggy. Sure there are fights going on here and there by its beyond freaking obvious that they simply don't matter in the grand scheme of things as whoever between deku and shiggy wins can and will single-handedly turn the tide of battle.

Friends making fun of him being quirkless 3. Bakugo bullying him in childhood All he wanna do is to save people like the no.1 hero But the society broke his heart like this When he got chance to become hero he took it And about why he didn't questioned about bad side is because whom will he tell this , to public. But how Let's take an example: even if a politician want to ban alcohol he can't if his citizens don't want him to. Like he would be dead if All Might wasn’t thete to save him when he suicide missioned to save Bakugo. Again when he tried to save bakugo with his friends, they were all fucked if the heroes didn’t show up. And don’t try to bring the “oh but he trained hard to deserve it” that’s not what I’m talking about. Deku never would have even trained to get stronger physically if he didn’t meet all might. Witnessing a growth in power isn't as compelling as watching an MC grow in character and Deku doesn't grow much in that aspect. This is what I've noticed: the more compelling MCs work on their character --> they unlock their potential --> and are rewarded with strength. Deku is the opposite. He grows in strength so unbelievably quickly (it's almost silly) to compensate for his character flaws rather than just work on those flaws in the first place which unlocks his potential. Instead, he gets what he wants with almost no repercussions and even when he loses a battle, he still gets what he wants in the end (so not even a proper loss). Abusing his body to get physically strong quickly seems all show and doesn't actually have meaningful long-term consequences. With that kind of abuse, he shouldn't be able to walk. This makes him an uninteresting and sometimes obnoxious character to a lot of people. I've never once thought of him as the underdog even though that's what the show keeps implying.@@reem6087

  • Ironically, the "Anime Batman" was the original goal. Shonen Jump, the compony, basically said no. Which is how we get the "Chosen one" aspect as a second hand option. Oddly, the lack of "human element" isn't really an issue to be honest. Some irl individuals are mentally lacking with particular drives which could very well have helped them, but doesn't cross their minds. I just find it nice to see a good one track mind character in a similar vein to Goku. Though as someone has pointed out, it could very well be the fact of idealism or childhood fantasy. But again, all the issues that you can point to where it all started was with Shonen Jump. We could have had the Anime Batman, but didn't because they said that it wouldn't be as cool. We could have had a decent story line where we learn about the world and see where things could have gone, have him use his mental ability to win fights instead of punch/kick to win. But with how Shonen Jump forces the artist to basically suffer under the wight of deadlines, it's hard for Horikoshi to actually put enough effort without making things feel like there hand-me-down's. And that's where I think we will need to focus more on.

Deku isn't really that charismatic compared to other shonen protagonists. Those characters personalities and backstories made them more magnetic. Deku's personality in season 1 is understandably weak and meek, it's somewhat annoying, but after that, he's kinda uninteresting as a person. Iruma-kun from Mairimashita Iruma-kun is a lot more likable despite having similar personality traits like being a pushover. however when Iruma acts weak are less out of fear but more out of kindness. A good writer would make a world & work to insure if their are as few plot holes as possible or if their are, they are either fixed or at least retconned so the story can still make sense and not break in on itself. My hero is facing this right now. For instance the mirio reveal in the arc just before vigilante was rushed and not set up well. Sure they had some of the steps in place but it just fell flat upon rereading the scene. He shows up does nothing then leaves the story like nothing happened next chapter. You'd think the writer would take more care and maybe save that moment for another arc or at least have mirio have a important role going foward, or atleast have something in between showing the progress was already very close and now a flashback just after he returns does not count its just lazy. Of course he just adds it in to generate hype then forgets about mirio ever existed after he got his powers back.

  • I think Deku is a great character, but his beliefs are never challenged giving him a chance to display character or growth. Then Horikoshi is inconsistent when it comes to the consequences with his actions. Him being good is not an issue. He’s very similar to Spider-Man and Captain America I think Deku is interesting because his heroic attributes are a result of trauma and being bullied. He has NO self worth so in his eyes the most valuable thing about him is the quirk he was given, hence why he will always destroy himself to save others.

    @francjameso@francjameso4 ай бұрын
    • Agree that he is similar to Captain America, though the difference is their struggle. Steve Rogers (and I’m talking about MCU version) struggle with his environment, being in a different world than he's used to and having to move on only to discover that the people he worked with are either evil or want to do things that goes against being a hero, and he still keeps being a good person and still help people even if it means becoming a criminal. Midoriya is like the video said, the struggle of his own powers, which is not a bad thing, but there isn’t really much to reflect on society or the hero system. The closest thing we gotten is his fight with Gentle and that’s it, and sure, he did gone rogue and became a vigilante, but that’s gotten reversed pretty quickly to the point where there is no point or reason for that to happen, just checking the mark of ‘protagonist goes on a depression arc before the third act’ on their Hero's journey. I am not saying Midoriya isn’t a bad character, not good either, just poorly executed due to worldbuilding being thrown out the window.

This is also why Stain is so important as he points out the need for fame, money and popularity in most heroes. Deku doesnt realise it but his own initial quirklessness is what makes him unique and gives him the necessary perspective to be such a great hero (same with all might being quirkless). Deku can see everyone else for how amazing they and their powers are, but always sees himself as inferior, (something that would benefit his character a heap if he himself addressed it, hopefully horikoshi decides to explore it)

No. He chose Deku because Deku was lucky enough to have an encounter with him beforehand and Deku was there at the right time, just running out to try and save someone and being quirkless, shouldn't be the way to pick someone for the most powerful quirk ever? For me it felt pretty unfair that Deku had only a summer of training, picked for the most powerful quirk under lucky circumstances, and surpassed all his classmates, some who had been training all their lives and some had as pure motives as Deku, some who eventually didn't at first but eventually would be JUST as worthy. I just don't see the students in the class any less worthy than Deku. In my opinion the kid who could float through stuff, can't remember his name, was just as worthy as Deku, not saying he should have got it instead but I just did not buy how the anime was trying to tell me, only Deku was good enough and worthy for it. In my opinion there were plenty of worthy candidates and Deku is not special, yes he was quirkless but it's not like Deku had any control over that, it even feels a little annoying that a allmight would use something at birth that Deku had no choice over, to pick him for the most powerful quick, like why should any kid who had a quick be disqualified in allmights opinion? Its not their fault, they were born with a weak or powerful quirk, and Allmight tried to frame it as "I gave something to Deku to let him step in the ring" with the other people with quirks, I'm like no, Allmight you gave Deku something that would help him become a world champion IN the ring, that eventually no one could surpass, thats VERY different! Theres a difference in helping someone become equal in a skill with their peers and helping and giving them something that would make them surpass their peers and become the "strongest" ever.

It's because he had a friend from 4 years old as a bully who said to Izuku to kill himself so he can born into something more useful 10 years later, with the idea of his IDOL and MANY OTHERS told him that he can't to suddenly his idol told him that he CAN be a hero was like a point where he needs to prove All Might that he can do it which had shaped Izuku's personality into what you said. • When they relaunched the DCEU on animated movie, when Green Lantern thinks Batman is some vampire/metahuman like him he is shocked to learn that Batman is just a guy in a cape wearing a bat costume. This has always been peak character building of Batman since the 1930s because he is the normal man fighting against God Like threats alongside God Like colleagues. Deku was supposed to be the first quirkless hero since in MHA universe there was no such category and it would have been awesome. There are so many characters who's abilities do not give them a physical boost yet they found ways to give themselves a leg up. Nezu is the principal and he beats the students in his exam just by toppling some buildings like dominos. Night Eye trained his body like mad to supplement his quirk. He also learned martial arts and much more wielding 5kg paperweights and stamps as weapons with just his finger strength. Aizawa is pretty much fighting as a quirkless person especially if he is up against a mutant he has to take them down without so much as a knife. The potential was there yes that there are already pro heroes who fight in a quirkless style in function but no we got a whiny nerd who does nothing and everything wrong. I can forgive all that! Once he gets One For All he botches it up so badly. He wrecks his arm for what? He doesn't even train himself properly to use it without breaking his bones. He has to go to Gran Torino to learn to use only 5 % but he never really has tech or anything to support him. Basically he is trying to be an All Might clone and is wrecking his body needlessly.

  • While I agree that batman deku would have been fun, he got the power in like the first 2 episodes. Its a minor annoyance built on preconceptions. There were a lot of ways that the story could have been more cohesive. For example, Deku attempts to train but hes denied because of lack of quirk. Or perhaps his bullies find out and torment him into giving up.. He tells his mom/teachers and they do nothing + the bullying gets worse. It explains his weakness and reluctance to do anything about his situation while tying in the quirk discrimination in a believable way. Hell, you could have had a scene where he overhears his dad leave specifically because of him being quirkless, adding to his issues. Then after he gets his powers society treats him better. His bullying could have led to an antisocial and distrustful attitude about him, leading to misunderstanding and drama with class A mistaking him for being a more polite Bakugo. Or he maintains his original attitude either through a mask or his improving situation. You could have had him witnessing a child being quirkless and either ignoring it and leading to self-loathing (even better if it happends around the eri arc) or getting involved, leading to different kinds of issues like for example one of his classmates trying to let the kid down gently and he just blows up at them, the situation hitting too close to home. Bonus points if theres a suicide of a quirkless kid leadong to the reveal that most quirkless are actuallu old people since quirkless kids rarely reach adulthood. Even more bonis points if this increase coincides with Allmights rise and his unintentional deification of power based heroism based on a superpower arms race. That could lead to a cobtrast between Allmights time and dekus, where batmanesque heroes existed but allmight made them irrelevent or something. All for one could further complicate things by having exquirkless minions with the quirks of their bullies, willing to die for him. I could go on.

  • I think you could have given Deku One for All at the start of the series. However, Izuku himself needs to be different. At the start of the series, he has given up on being a hero. He is more jaded because of his realistic approach to life. I do this because it'll be easier for Izuku to change his viewpoints on villains and hero society as a whole. For example, during his encounter with Stain. I would have it a pure 1v1. This forces Izuku to fight such an overwhelming force on his own. However, his intelligence comes into play during the fight. He doesn't know how Stain's quirks fully function. However, he knows that he can't let Stain lick the blood off of the blade. It shows he is paying attention, on the fly thinker, and given enough time to grow. He would be a genius on the battlefield. Eventually, Stain asks Izuku why he is desperately trying to protect a person like Iida. Izuku replies that if he left now. He would be abandoning him to the fate that Izuku had been abandoned. Whenever he got beaten by other quirk users. He was left alone to lick his wounds. He doesn't want other people to feel what he has to experience. This tells us that Izuku is here to save people, not just stop people. Stain recognized this to be just like All Might's ideals but different enough. However, it's something Stain can get behind, and ultimately, this spares Deku a death sentence. Izuku learns a lot from Stain, and as the story goes forward, Izuku's perceptions continue to change. Even to the point of realizing what La Brava and Gentle are to each other. The two saved the other. This forces an inner conflict within Izuku. Does he let the two mere pranksters go so that they could continue saving the other from their own demons, or does he take them in and condemn them. As both will be separated. Remember, he wants to save, not stop. He could save them, but only if he let's them go. Yet, he would have to keep this a secret, and he isn't able to tell everyone why he missed the dance concert. This forces Izuku to grow, and we can see more of the grays of society and how they would have an impact on Izuku as a whole. That even with One For All, it's not easy being a hero.

I found both worlds very similar, on one side a city made up of heroes with hero schools etc, on the other a city made up of Esper children who also go to school etc. But I realized that Boku no Hero sends the message that if you don't have powers, you are automatically weak and useless, while in Index they show that power is not the only thing that matters. 60% of Espers in Index were not lucky enough to awaken their powers, but this does not stop them from seeking their own strength through alternative sources: knowledge, artillery and military training, martial arts, street freestyle and even ultra-resistant robots and suits provided by the city where they live. And yet the struggles are determined by a combination of power, knowledge and strategy and not just power.

You don't need a license to do hero work you do need it to get credit. Which to me is what it always seemed like Deku was about he was the glory of being like all might. He wants the public's affection that they never gave him. He wants to be a symbol a icon like all might. If he really wanted to be a hero he'd and to just help people he'd be like koichi. The original heroes were vigilantes and now because of house society works they treat them like a relic of the past when in reality they are no different then a licensed hero.

  • I remember back when I first realised Deku's failure as a protagonist, I asked myself "what went wrong?" I think this video sums it up pretty well. It's also extremely upsetting to see what he could've been. Not in the fan concepts or interpretations, but the actual beta concepts for his character; specifically Yamikumo (I think that's his name). I genuinely want to see a video talking about Yamikumo because he's so interesting. He's (from my interpretation at least) a quirkless child that learnt that being cruel is the only way to garner some dignity for himself. Looking at the real art of him, I get the vibe that he's either batshit crazy, or some manipulator that's willing to lie his way to the top. An arc of Yamikumo learning how to earn respect honestly, but also coming to grips with the fact that he's becoming exactly like the system that hurt him and then striving to change that for other quirkless people is so much more interesting than what we have now. I also think Shinso would make a good deuteragonist in a story with Yamikumo. Villain personality + villain quirk.

Without a backstory, we do not understand completely for his wish to atone for what he did, and honestly, it would have been far more selfish of him to ask for forgiveness, at least as of now, because he hasn't atoned for what he did. And that is made perfectly within the series itself, as Shoto tells him that he will wait and see where it goes, as he at least will give a chance to see if such sudden change of Endeavor's will lead to something, but ultimately, Shoto has stated explicitly that he will not forgive him. I remember a very good one that, for some reason that I won't bother explaining, because you already know it, Deku commits suicide, only he was found by some villains who took him in and dehumanized him. The fanfic focused on the fact that no one knew who the new Deku was, and while everyone was investigating about it, they realized the weaknesses that existed in the school, in a poor classification system, attention, environment, and how everyone perceived them, even some villains end up feeling sympathy for the boy, who is now more of a walking sack of meat and has so many problems in his head that he can barely carry on a conversation without exploding or breaking down. He ended up becoming a kind of analogy and I loved him. Here's the kicker: I read this when I hadn't seen the series, and when I finally saw it (and read the manga) I was extremely disappointed that what I was seeing was simply a modern Dragon Ball, excellent for new members of the anime community , but I'm already past that time.

Batman would beat Deku up for such recklessness. He's only smart when he needs to give exposition, explain how an action scene worked, but never to move the plot. Shit just happens to him and he doesn't use the world's movement to benefit. Like, if he dreamt of becoming a hero, why didn't he do anything for it? No training, no learning how to make stuff, no studying of strategies or anything (fanboying doesn't count, weebs aren't exactly geniuses), hell, he doesn't even understand how a human body works, he keeps on breaking his own limbs despite what the nurse says and his go-to battle strategy is "punch hard". The thing that bugs me the most is that they took this really cool concept of a kid with no superpowers trying to become a hero when that’s systemically impossible. And like- I’m a superhero fan. It’s the reason this anime draws me in, is because it’s introduced as: “Superhero tropes! The show!” In regular superhero media, superheroes without powers isn’t…unheard of. But it’s not unheard of because in most superhero media, it’s the powers that are abnormal. MHA takes that trope and switches it. This time, it’s people without powers that are the minority. Batman can square up against the AVERAGE villain because most average villains are like…common thugs. No superpowers, just people wanting money or whatever. But in this world the average thug might be able to…idk…manipulate air, and make it super hard for you to breathe! Someone without any powers is a lot less likely to be able to top that. It would be interesting watching someone at the the biggest disadvantage in comparison to his classmates, strive to be the best and work twice as hard just to get to their level. But Horikoshi took that really REALLY cool concept and just…threw it out the window.

  • 12:44 it also happens in the joint training arc when blackwhip emerges and Deku can’t trust OFA entirely. He verbatim says he needs to finish his fight with Monoma and Shinso quirkless. In the recent manga chapters it’s the same thing But amplified.

  • Deku's not the only thing that's trash. The war arc didn't have enough casualties of characters, Gran Torino and students from both classes should have ended. Horikoshi did a good job building up the mutant issue but in the end the problem was fixed by a c list character monologuing.

  • I mean to go with the Xy thing, he has theoretically the strongest quirk and still feels that he needs to be more than that. I agree about him gaining a quirk but even when he got it he was more or less going through season 1-2 quirkless. I also feel like his goal is valid too, it kinda goes without saying I feel that he wants to be the number one hero so he can make people smile like all might, he wants to be the next symbol of peace yk? And I don’t agree about the case of doing what all might can, he has his powers but none of the one for all users that we know of haven’t had the same powers not potential and the quirk grows and evolves differently like deku having full cowling and not all might. I get where you’re coming from and I see what you’re trying to say but this is just my thoughts, he could be a better character but I don’t think it’s that bad

  • Deku is my favorite character in the show however some story I created did something similar where he still has OFA and never loses it at all but he also has PS4 Spider-Man intellect and technological prowess and Batman’s tools, analytical skills, and his master strategist abilities. On top of that he has a ninja sword that Stain gave them when the two just talked out their problems and a pistol designed specifically for killing Nomu.

  • Uh, Takewimpy never wanted to be the number one delinquent to save Hina. That was a delusion he had crushed by the reality of Kiyomisa and his gang kicking the stuffing out of him and his and making them their lackeys. That was the whole point of that dream. It was never a long-term goal the story built around like Naruto's wanting to be Hokage.

  • 7:04 Omfg the anime community has to stop hating on Tanjiro, just because he’s a bland protagonist doesn’t make him bad cuz blandness can have meaning (for example Denji from CSM). His character arc is interesting because he has a good reason to want to save demons because they were once human. He also just wants to heal his sister which is refreshing to see in Shonen. End of rant (but you add on to my comment by analyzing his character in a positive light)

  • I could only watch until season four before i had enough with the story just pulling plot out of their ass. Literally give jim a single negative traight that IS his fault, make him take accountability. I love ururaka and she gets hard sidelined for the sake of love plot with her, which is also just as neglected. Literally every single side character is more interesting than the main protagonist. Even the guy whos quirk is a tail, hes weak, he knows it, but thats a flaw and id rather see him try and improve rather than deku. HECK EVEN THE INVISIBLE GIRL, SHES MORE INTERESTING THAN DEKU

  • My biggest issue with Deku is the direction in which he is taken. Deku is different than other children. Deku is constantly discriminated against, considered less by society, considered incapable. Sounds familiar? It's because this could be taken as a strong symbolism for minorities in our own society. I see myself in Izuku, because I'm neurodivergent, I live this struggle every day. So I was expecting an overcome. I was expecting Midoriya to rise as a hero and show this society that, with or without a quirk, he is capable. But no, what I got was a typical "chosen one" plot with Deku miraculously receiving his powers from the number one hero. C'mon! It's seems like this story is telling me that Deku can only be a hero if he has a quirk. Doesn't that mean that my quirkless ass can simply not be one too? See how problematic that message is? It's like it's telling us that we can't win unless we are different the who we are, and that's really fucked up.

  • If only there was a quirk therapy institution for those that are shunned for their quirks, or a special institute for the quirkless...thats how it would've been in thr real world if quirks were real. You don't shun people with disabilities. You care for them, show them that it doesn't diminish their qualities as a person...

  • You're wrong. Deku WAS good, up to a certain point. The most interesting thing about him is his suicidal selflessness and the fact that this is portrayed as a bad thing. At first, I kind of felt as you did about him technically being op at the start instead of going a Batman esque underdog route, but actually, him getting OFA is cool because he has to rip himself apart to use it, which is especially worrisome given his personality. Where it started going down hill is when he panicked and went back to going 100% with his arms, and this had no real consequence, even though the scene made it feel like it was gonna. When, after Black Whip, he was mastering the new quirks too easily. How he finally snapped, went vigilante to protect the school at the price of his mental and physical health, and it seems to me like we're just gonna move on from that without anyone really talking about it.

    • And he kinda gave up way too easily when encountered with his classmates. I get he was tired and all but Horikoshi could've just made Deku escape and continue the vigilante arc where we get to see how his mental state has been from the previous events and maybe even see some of his trauma from bullying while seeing how terrible the hero society was changing Deku's view of things. It honestly could've been like the best shit we could've ever gotten from the series honestly.

  • The Story of Anti-Villain Deku: After being bullied by Kacchan, saving him, getting yelled by Pro Heroes, All Might turned his hopes down and Society criticized him, he's not going to let that corrupt him. He knows that there's another way to become a hero. After he saw and heard a quirkless, former, Pro Hero's speech about how he's a skilled fighter on the internet, Deku started to train like hell. After that, he decided to be a vigilante and did a great job at saving people and defeating villains. Some Pro Heroes are jealous that Deku, a quirkless vigilante is doing a better job than them, so they decided to brutally humiliate him to Society who actually enjoyed it. After that, AFO "saved" him. Anti-Villain Deku's new goal is to kill the ones who deserves it and change the world's ugliness.

  • Deku's bland goals and aspirations as a progression in the show is that his blind heroism is less of a goal but a hinderance, one we see negatively effect All Might first. I don't think anyone who doesn't like Deku is necessarily wrong but more doesn't look at him for the narratively important character that he is. This is a hero society, not one built on the pillar of one symbol like All Might was, that breeds complacency and greed that Stain and The League of Villains seek to irradicate. deku's desire to be all might and his resources to do so are in themselves the flaw. He's the last person to hold this power and Quirklessness slowly becomes a thing of the past and OFA becomes more powerful, if he wants to be the hero he claims to be he cannot be a symbol or a pillar, he must stand amongst his friends and fight his foil in Shigaraki. Deku lacks in moral objectivity and that is a flaw that is level to Bakugo's anger and Todoroki's dismissal of his fire.

  • 11:20 Gentle is a perfect narrative foil for Deku and encapsulates a lot about what you’re saying in this section. Further down the line he faces Aoyama, where it’s revealed that he was also quirkless and that builds a whole different atmosphere. Lady Nagant was a hero who went mad due to the corrupted hero system set in stone and she teaches Deku about the imbalances of society. Read up.
