    • He actually did work for KGB just in office, so he wasnt anything like russian James Bond. He worked in German, so he didnt need to use English in his daily life. Also I think that for russian spy from times of communism in Europe it was more useful for soviet spies to learn German, Polish, Hungarish, Czech, Slovakish or Bulgarian...because soviets were a lot interested in others communists states (e.g. when Czechoslovakian people wanted to change in regim in 1968 soviets occupied Prague with soviet's and communbist's alies army)... So I think that he can speaks English has nothing to do with his KGB career.

And even those struggling with it will valiantly try to speak English all the same . As for Spanish, while we did get colonized for more than 3 centuries and it got passed on to people, the Spanish language is an actual elective language course offered in universities and colleges here.

With workers all over the world they also pick up other languages and skills, everything from culinary to construction as well as languages. My experience is that the PI has the highest percentage of multi-language speakers and highest percentage of those who can play musical instruments.

Learning a few words of spanish in highschool doesn't count.

  • Here in the Motherland, Africa we speak many languages fluently. For example, English is my third language and first European language. I have since studied Romance Languages, other Germanic languages and currently learning an Eastern Slavic language. My first two languages are my native languages so I'm a polyglot. Learning new languages are for me a way of acquiring different kinds of brain in one head. The heart of the process is not just acquiring and fine-tuning the brain to adopt a new register of words and word orders but to be able to think in that language. At that very moment you become the version of you that could have existed had you been a native speaker of that language. So there are lots of us here on the continent with similar feats of strength. It is very common here.

    • If they're europeans, from any country, I would say 3 plus more than one of their local dialects. It's average here. But people from outside EU must not take it like a bragging (even if we're proud of it, obviously, because we like to use many languages to be more precise or just friendly) and it's not a sign of superior intelligence per se... or it would be like saying that because someone eats a more varied diet then he's a chef!

    • @@Anna-fw7lm I never take ANYTHING as bragging or arrogant or offensive in the first impression. What I do is QUESTION things that we 'hear all the time' and that 'people from X place normally speak 3 languages or more' is something that I question and doubt, I do not believe that thing is a real thing, I do not believe it is statistically substantial in a way that we could say 'normally', if it was 'some people' I would easily believe, but I don't. I speak 2 languages well, and I worked in a hotel and could handle spanish sufficiently to cater to spanish people, but I do NOT say I speak spanish. Thanks for collaborating.

    • @@maraxussrafhael I assume you're not from Europe so you don't have a direct experience. I'm italian, I traveled Europe and mine is just an estimate. I took the average between young people, adults and elderly people (in some regions elderly are isolated, they may know one language and a couple of dialects, in other regions or near the borders it may happen that elderly know more languages than the students due to various factors) Italy doesn't have the best school programs regarding languages, northen european countries do, but even as that our kids are often bilingual from birth due to the vicinity from other countries with which we mix all activities (italian+ french, or german, or slovenian, mostly) in EU we have no borders for the citizens of every EU country. Then you have to consider that our kids start learning english in kindergarden (for bilinguals it's already a third language) and when they start elementary school the program almost always push to teach 2 foreign languages (english+ french is more common thanks to our proximity and past colonizations that we don't refuse but embrace) so at that point almost all kids speak italian and are learning 2 other languages, plus every kid learn local dialects (multiple, even if not perfectly, because here every town jas its own, you can go 3 km in one direction and have no idea what they're talking about... that's why we use hands) I'm going to give you an example: Chair. In italian is Sedia, in my native dialect is Scarana, in milan they say Cadrega. (my native dialect sounds more like french, even in grammar, than italian). Dialects are fun and used within the extended family to love-bullying one another and laugh at everyone's expense (the firs thing we learn from them is how to curse). Sometimes in middle school, but more often in high school, the programs will add extra courses (like spanish, that's so similar to italian that, even if we're not able to speak it, we can speak our respective languages at a slow pace and understand almost everything) in classic high school they also have latin and greek, in scientific just latin (plus the 2 main foreign languages, plus extra courses if you want to score points for your final degree) Then we have high school that specifically focus on teaching languages where you can face a total of 5, with more difficult ones like arab, chinese, russian, always german etc. Now, it's realistic to say that not all students are good, and that we usually don't keep up with every language we faced as students (and will not become fluent in every one) but we're encouraged to travel, to use the Erasmus program to take 1 or more years of high school, or the whole university program, in a different country (equivalent school) for wealthy families this practice is older than the roman empire, now it's accessible for everyone 'cause to study you pay almost nothing and with Erasmus signed up families host (for free) random kids (yes it's safe, everything is monitored and people likes it, no one want to fu*k it up). All that to say that, on average, we europeans know at least 2 or 3 languages (fluently enough. and I mean at least a B1 level) plus our dialects, plus whatever we can understand in the most basic forms that's not considered 'fluent' (fluent= B2 or C1... for example I'm between B2 and C1 in english because I still make grammar mistakes sometimes, but as you can see I'm fluent 'enough' to say I am)

    • @@maraxussrafhael Your kind of job requires you to speak professionally, that's different than colloquial, man ☺️ you cannot take your time to think by chitchatting or gesticulate your way out if you're stuck 'cause you cannot find the right word. In high school I had to learn 'corporate/administration english' with a plethora of specific terms I don't use day to day. It's a different league to speak a language within a professional environment, you have to be much careful, precise, and on top of your game with the accent. I understand why you're annoyed at people who claim to speak a language and barely use a 'tourist vocabulary' where the pronunciation is all messed up, almost impossible to understand and when you obviously don't keep up with the blabbering they start repeating it louder as that could solve the problem (and then they blame you) I saw it happens... it's rude and frustrating
