BOILING POINT - MARCH 2: An RNZ documentary on the violent end of the Parliament grounds occupation

On 2 March 2022, police cleared hundreds of people from a sprawling occupation and protest in the area around New Zealand’s Parliament.
The conclusion of the three-week occupation was angry and violent.
Previously unseen footage gives fresh insight into the rage that overtook some people. And eyewitness accounts take us back to the chaos, confusion and shock of it all.

    • What was different except their equipment? They were violent and attacked peaceful protesters, got a reaction n then claimed it was the protesters who were violent. I can't help thinking it would have been better n more democratic for the Gov to talk to the protesters, hear their concerns and put forward their reasons why people's civil right should be ignored or violated.

  • It was an absolutely insane decision for the police to clear the area by force. That was both unnecessary and guaranteed to end in violence. You don't get to call someone else violent when you started the fight. The police were just used as a political tool. A lot of people, both police and protesters, got hurt for nothing, and a lot of taxpayer funds were wasted. Most of the people who were arrested either had their charges dropped or got a warning. This is one of the main reasons I would never join the police. I could never take part in an operation like that and still feel like I was the good guy. It also further called into question the impartiality of media funded by the government on a selective basis in the name of "public interest journalism." A dark day for New Zealand, and something we will not forget in our lifetimes, much like the Springbok tour protests of 1981.

    • The 22 days before this were much worse. Thugs screaming insults, burning tents and even throwing bricks were ugly but the misguided and dangerous attempts to thwart epidemic control measures were potentially more serious. The US had 3,400 deaths per million. In a New Zealand sized population, that equates to 17, 000 deaths. New Zealand actually had less than 4000. The efforts of our health department saved over 12 000 lives. The protestors wanted to throw twelve thousand of their fellow citizens under the bus. And given Northern Hemisphere experience, probably another 20 000 would have gone through intensive care, many with breathing tubes stuck down their throat with permanent damage to their lungs. All because a few sooks didn't want to wear a mask or take a vaccine. Twelve thousand lives cut short and twelve thousand grieving families just don't matter to them. I find this protest contemptible. I am sure many will disagree with me but you are disagreeing because you get your information from watching Tiktok. Heads up. Those who studied medicine for years and specialize in infectious disease control know more than you do. That is why no one listened to you.

  • So very sad especially for the children that were exposed to the scenes that unfolded much later when the splinter groups protesters took over. Many believe that if the initial gathering of peaceful protesters had been addressed by the key members of parliament especially the prime minister of the time, for her to address the peaceful protesters from the steps of parliament in the very early stages of of the protest before numerous splinter protest groups arrived, the protest would not have grown so large and would dispersed as peacefully as they arrived. It appears that as the protest and diverse range of protest groups continued to grow in size, another key opportunity by NZ leadership to give a genuine sincere listening ear and a commitment by NZ leaders to find out what the key concerns were was also lost. Showing geniune interest in the protesters key concerns would have carmed the whole proest down and would have also provided a source of Intel to assist with the understanding of the more complex issues the splinter groups have that are sure to rise in NZ's future. Unfortunately Winston Peter's was illegally trespassed due to him peacefully visiting and being welcomed by the initial key peaceful group, signalling to some that perhaps democracy in NZ had temporarily stopped. NZ needs unity more than any other time in this and our leaders need to keep in touch with what is happening in grass roots NZ. Never again should issues get to the point again where our fellow citizens women, children, men and the NZ Police force ever put at extreme risk again of physical volience again because of a Mature peaceful two way communication between our government representatives an its citizens is so very important to peacefully resolve the future of any issues that are brewing behind the scenes in our amazing beautiful country of NZ. In regards to the future of NZ. when you view and listen to the footage of the fiasco at the seat of government in Wellington, anyone would need to be deaf, dumb & blind or hiding their heads in sand not to be aware of the fact that their are far more angry radical splinter groups brewing in this nation than the anti-vacination mandate protesters. Here's to a peaceful NZ!

    • Nobody realised the enormity of the event at the start. I think everybody from parliament, police, protestors were all blindsided by the numbers and variety of protestors from day one. I was following the truck protest on their own Convoy 22, the truckers' channel, and also news television and on Chantelle's recommendation , her covera ge also. All the way the constant theme was the surprise at the scale and variety of protest support. Immediately on arrival at parliament the trucker organisers walked away, as far as I could decipher over the speaker system being under the control of Destiny Church. Police were also under strength, but I think correctly made a priority of arresting extremists calling for the execution of the prime minister, and a takeover by the armed forces. From the first hour a range of troublemakers were carrying out provocative and highly disruptive tactics, including swastikas and such. From the very first all formal groups were outnumbered and never had any real control. Lots of people were very well intentioned, at least in their own views but nobody took leadership and succeeded in excercising discipline over quite nasty elements. When law and order breaks down on this scale over weeks, the police takeover by force became the only choice. I understand that many protestors were well intentioned and never saw themselves as the bad guys, but at some point that situation develiped partly because there never seemed to be any wardens or recognised leadership.

    • @@TheMudwatcher People who stood had no chance from the start. Even before the events unfolded, Jacinda publicly labeled those who opposed the vaccine as "delinquents" and relieved most of their careers. Well intentioned leaders could have been a bit intimidated by this as well as agenda-pushing media who were lapping up violent highlights from the extremists whenever they could. Most people don't jump at the opportunity to get crucified in public, but I see your point and agree. I believe the important lesson learned from this is that after it's all said and done, the majority of New Zealand made its choice to conform to government medical standards, so going forward at least we will be familiar with the lockdown drills.

No country 's government permits occupation and camping on its grounds of parliament. You might hide behind a false name on youtube, but in the real world the primary responsibility of police is to keep order, using the degree of violence considered reasonable at the time. Quite how the laws might differ in another country seems of little relevance. The basic legal situation remains that behaviour in public places can be regulated at any time at the discretion of the police present. .

  • This was very upsetting to watch. brought me to tears actually. I applaud all those peaceful protestors who had the balls and determination to attend, I was not there but I should have been. When people push back instead of be like sheep and blindly follow the one sided narrative. It was becoming clearer by the day, the country was in the hands of an evil dictator, thank god she has gone, pushed more than likely. Pushing her agenda on the poplace, our loss of freedoms left right and center, freedom of speech, freedom to choose to go to work to feed our family, freedom to choose our medical interventions, just like that, because I SAY SO. Pushing through legislation without proper public consultation, like a wrecking ball destroying the fabric of the country. Like hell, who does she think she is, Our forebears went to war, they lost their lives fighting for those freedoms. Lest We Forget. Then the commemoration ceromonies for those who died and those who survived those wars, All Cancelled. funny that..... 3 weeks people stayed there, away from their homes, putting themselves out,as they did. And did she come to talk , no , stayed in her lofty tower. appeared on tv giving false narrative and telling them to go home, doubt too many watched her on tv on 6.clock news. It was not the genuine protestors that caused all the violence, that was scrappers that came for a scrap, as they do. A shame the media blamed that on the protestors, people would have been angry about the destruction of their personel property, That was the, push the go button.... for ensuing violence. that should not have happened without right and proper warning, But protestors should not have been blocking people from opening their businesses. All in All I do believe it was absolutetly a worthwhile protest, it showed us we are not alone in believing what is right and what is wrong. The leaders we elect will think twice before they act, knowing there is a far greater proportion of the population wide awake, to our polititions governance of the laws they are elected to uphold and protect. Thank you to all the genuine concerned citizens giving up their time to protest peacefully as they did, as is our right.

Its pretty clear that the police or someone undercover lit the fires to justify the violent ending. Why else would the fire department be there along side the cops with hoses at the ready at the EXACT moment the fires were lit? And why would a protestor light a fire to his own tent? It makes no sense. Clearly the NZ fire department and NZ Police planned it together. Congrats to Jacinda for ruining the trust of NZ taxpayers. She only had talk to them.
