Doctor Zhivago (1965) - Yuri and Lara (HD Tribute)

The movie takes place mostly against a backdrop of the pre-World War I years, World War I itself, the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the Russian Civil War. A narrative framing device, set in the late 1940s or early 1950s, involves KGB Lieutenant General Yevgraf Andreyevich Zhivago (Alec Guinness) searching for the daughter of his half brother, Doctor Yuri Andreyevich Zhivago (Omar Sharif), and Larissa ("Lara") (Julie Christie). Yevgraf believes a young woman, Tanya Komarova (Rita Tushingham), may be his niece and tells her the story of her father's life. Yuri Zhivago is a young doctor, but a poet at heart, who has been raised by his aunt and uncle following his mother's death. Yuri falls in love with beautiful "Lara", who has been having an affair with her mother's lover, Victor Komarovsky, an unscrupulous businessman. Yuri, however, ends up marrying his cousin, Tonya. But when he and Lara meet again years later, the spark of love reignites.

  • I'm just finishing the book now. Of course I saw the movie when it first came out and several times since then. The recent book on how the CIA came to get the book published and into the Soviet Union sounds interesting too, very much a part of the Dr Zhivago story line.

    • I never got to read the book, but I knew that the novel could not be published in the then Soviet Union, due to the criticisms made to the communist regime in the work. The originals of the book were smuggled out of the Iron Curtain and edited in Italy, quickly becoming a bestseller, making Pasternak the Nobel Prize winner for Literature. However, because it was a book banned by the Moscow government, Pasternak was barred from receiving the Nobel Prize and was forced to return the honor. The ban on the publication of Doctor Jivago within the Soviet Union lasted until 1989, when the opening policy of Mikhail Gorbachev, then leader of the USSR, released the publication of the work. Only this year, the Russians were able to see the saga of Jivago. As for the movie, it's simply wonderful. A movie that I never tire of reviewing again and again. :)

  • O filme e lindo ,mas e tambem muito triste . Yuri foi infeliz , porque trocou o amor da familia e da esposa que sempre amou ele por uma paixao por uma mulher que naquela epoca era considerada uma mulher leviana .

    • A revolução russa de 1917 serve de cenário para este amor, irracional e impulsivo, tal como a personalidade do poeta. Talvez seja o simbolismo daquilo que desejamos viver, mas que nem seremos felizes no final. É este um dos dilemas da vida no geral... uma vida mundana e feliz, ou arriscar e correr o risco de perder tudo? Yuri sempre foi um homem ligado às mulheres, desde a perda da mãe, e mostra-se tal como ele é, e como todos nós no fundo o somos. Frágil, incompleto, e sobretudo... humano. É isto e muito mais coisas que torna este filme tão maravilhoso e épico. 🙂🙏🏼
