Today I'm picking my full 23 man England squad. Discussion includes: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Kobbie Mainoo, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice, Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka & 40+ others.
Let me know my biggest stinker here... I'll guess Grealish.
What do people think Grealish offers the England squad? Not a goal scorer and doesn't provide impact off the bench. What can he do vs France/Portugal in the big games? Realistically Rashford is the direct game breaker of the squad (with Bellingham) and needs to start on the wing so Kane has runners. Defenders are scared of the threat he can bring and just being on the field drops their defensive line. Foden in the midfield if Mainoo isn't considered to start.

Most sensible England squad I've seen so far. Probably just Konsa over White in reality

First time I’ve ever agreed with every pick at this moment in time. I think grealish, jones, shaw, mainoo and rashford are all context dependent on how they finish the season in terms of minutes / performance. Great job

@@joethomlinson_got those multifaceted CBs in White and Gomez but still don’t think it’s a problem. Personally I’d take Jones over Gallagher but this is the best list ive seen. Might be worth leaving a defender to take someone like Grealish or Bowen but those last few decisions are the hardest for sure

Thanks so much for the upload Joe. This is the best crop of English players I have ever seen and only comes second in terms of talent to France. Southgate needs to win to keep his job IMO.

Great squad Joe! I’d want to get Jones in there personally but apart from that it’s spot on. Starting line up would be: Pickford Walker Stones Maguire Shaw Rice Trent Bellingham Saka Kane Foden Thats what should be the lineup, massively experienced back line, insane quality in midfield with the right balance and that attack is frightening. If we don’t win the euros with that team and the options we have in the squad, then it will be down to Southgate somehow mucking it up.

No no mate Gallagher ? You’ve got to be killing me but JWP been underperforming for the hammers that’s a ridiculous shout JWP is so underrated should 1000% be going it’s criminal if he doesn’t. A midfield 3 of, Rice JWP Bellingham Really brings the perfect balance and reminds me to how Arteta / Arsenal set their midfield up JWP because in that ‘regista’ like feel similar to Jorginho. Rice as the engine with the ability and legs to perform for a 90 & break up play + Jude in the free roam allowed to really venture where he wants similar to Ødegaard but also the brilliant ability to press and defend also despite I’m a Utd fan so I hate to admit how good their midfield has been but really should be the mold for us it just makes perfect sense and a perfect comparison imo.

Gallagher's work rate is insane, has a great pair of legs on him, and is great for pressing football. I feel like he's a great choice to add some diversity into the squad

Was about to kick off about Gomez beacuse for whatever reason, I couldn't see his picture at the bottom🤦♂️😆. Maybe I just didn't recognise him in a England kit because it's been years since that last happened

Maguire plays well in a deeper line.. but I think that hampers both united and England But he's physically and strength in the air is a plus
Tino Livramento should go hes can player both sides of the field maybe not a first-team but not a bad player to can come onto the pitch
Especially with how shit chillwell was today, livramento linking up with Gordon would of made England better

Think your squad is good, but i would have jones in that squad. He played as a 6 for the U21’s last summer and he is probably englands best option as a box to box after jude

I would say of the ball Harvey is one of our most important players, he’s vital in leading the press whenever he plays
In defensive transition he’s still not physically that kind of player. I can’t see a world in which he’s in a double pivot.

Pretty solid squad but not even a mention for MGW (I’d have him just missing out too), won the Euros u-21 and is far and away Forest’s best player
Yeah fabulous player, but the talent level in that role of his is ridiculous… he’s competing with Palmer, Saka, Foden, Bellingham etc

@@matthias2756 His form is picking up and he is the kind of player that when he is in form, he becomes unstoppable. Not taking him would be idiotic. There isn't a better right footed winger in England squad than him. Not to mention his excellent big game record and his England record.
@@matthias2756 I think he is a solid option off the bench if your down or agaisnt a posession dominant side. He is so fast so direct and offers something other players don't have. There is also sterling but I'd argue he's been way worse than rashford
@@jhaych he offers nothing to the team other than his pace and streaky form in front of goal. He’s fine if all you’re looking to do is park the bus and hit on the occasional counter but his lack of versatility is exactly why United can’t play any other style. He’s mediocre at best at progressing the ball (both passes and carries), he struggles with ball retention, offers next to nothing defensively (for a team that is constantly defending too), has basically half the creative output of Englands other forward options, and to top it all off his per 90 G+A-PK and npxG+xAG are horrific this season. People are out here complaining that Grealish is having a terrible season but at least he puts up over 0.5 G+A-PK and npxG+xAG per 90; Rashfords at 0.32 and 0.35 respectively

Would be very close to the same team I think should go, 2 changes though, Gomez and Tomori changed for Trippier and Grealish, you had 9 defenders in the squad, can remove one for Grealish Would also start with Pickford Walker White Stones Rice Trent Foden Bellingham Saka Kane Grealish 4 City, 3 Arsenal, Trent, Bellingham, Kane. This is the team Pep, Arteta or Klopp would play, doubt Southgate will be brave enough

Pretty decent list TBF, although Curtis Jones is way better than Gallagher in terms of what's needed for England in my opinion. Gallagher great going forward but jones ball retention will help England maintain the tempo they want to put on the game.

@@joethomlinson_yes but I would feel more comfortable starting Trent at right back. He’s only ever played as a conventional midfielder a handful of times. Mainoos obviously got less experience overall but he’s a more experienced midfielder
@@joethomlinson_ All the attackers will target Trent but his attacking is really good but defending he is just moderate. He needs good Winger that can track back otherwise he is done for.

@@cobrakai83 No because he was a cm growing through the academy, he’s played there for Liverpool in an inverted role and actually been moved into that role in game, with either Bradley or Gomez going to rb. He’s one of the best passers of the ball that we’ve ever seen. I’m with Joe he has to start. Rice, Trent and Bellingham is an insane midfield.

Question about this is, are you using the same system as Southgate? Because it’s all well and good saying Maguire works in Southgate’s England setup, but if you play a different more expansive style, would he still work?
I don't think it would be much different tbh, maybe a bit more ball retention. But we proved at the WC we could smack teams about.

Honestly, with our options at left back I’m surprised no one is mentioning Tyrick Mitchell for Crystal Palace. Quality player and has played 35 games this season for palace. IMO they have to be looking at him at left back over Chillwell and Shaw.
Has olise decided which country he's gonna play for ik under 21 he's playin for France but I think if we get him that's a real game changer for our rw which will allow Cole Palmer to be a 10

Pretty on the money for me. Only consideration is that with both Ben White and Joe Gomez as FB's who can cover CB, you could arguably take one less CB and add another attacker. Bowen would be my pick as he adds a utility front three goal threat in the event of chasing a game

I think you have to bring Henderson. If rice gets inured then there’s really no one else who can come in and form a double pivot, England are blessed with lots of great 8s and 10s but in my mind henderson is the only possible cover for rice. Also his experience and leadership is extremely important, it’s easy to forget just how young this England squad is, it’s vital that you keep some of the more experienced guys around like henderson and sterling imo.

@@joethomlinson_ I know, I know. I'm a huge United fan and absolutely adore Mainoo, he's incredible. But it's out of love for him that I don't want to rush his development- I'd take him if it was a 26 man squad but there's just not enough space and Henderson is a more reliable, experienced backup. Mainoo just isn't physically developed enough yet to play as a 6 at international level imo (he'll defo become a world class 8 tho)

I'd rather be courageous and take a prospect like Mainoo, than with someone who we're more aware of but know of their lower talent ceiling (Phillips, Hendo, Prowse). It could be a real coming-of-age moment for Mainoo, and his skillset would be unique to our squad. We already have Stones that can be asked to fill in the middle if a situation requires it (for ease-of-mind)
Good selection, I'm still stuck on Gordon and Rashi.
Maybe I'm biased but for me it has to be Rashford, I really like Gordon and love how committed he is to playing for England. but with Rashford, he's got that tournament experience, and like Joe said, if we're losing to France I'd much rather see Rashford come on over Gordon

@@RandomXxX13 Galagher, Curtis Jones, Lewis Miley - all capable. (Just to add, Rice has one of the cleanest injury records of anyone in the squad). I'd probably also switch to a back 5 without Rice.
@@jamespanter8761 you'd definitely need a back 5 because none of those players could play in the 6 role at international level haha. Not saying Mainoo is some saviour or the best player ever, but he is the only real natural 6 that England have, other than Rice.

My picks (4-3-3): GK: Pickford | Butland | Trafford RB: Walker | White(Alexander-Arnold) RCB: Stones | Konsa LCB: Branthwaite | Dunk LB: Trippier | Gomez CDM: Rice(Mainoo) | Mainoo(Henderson) RCM: Alexander-Arnold(Rice) | Jones LCM: Bellingham | Maddison RW: Saka | Bowen LW: Foden | Gordon FW: Kane | Toney In the absence of White, I'd have Alexander-Arnold as an inverting fullback and start both Mainoo (as CDM) and Rice (as RCM). This is the only scenario which Henderson makes it on my team, where he comes on to wrap up the game and save energy on either Mainoo or Rice. Otherwise, the one wildcard I would have is Luke Shaw for Lewis Dunk Not only is he still England's best Left Back, he has also been played (and reasonably well) at LCB under Erik Ten Hag

I like it, I think you can afford to get rid of a cb tho as all three of white, Walker and Gomez can in some way play there. Gordon and rashford both get in for me or even grealish instead of one of them. Maybe tripps over Gomez/white too. As much as I hate southgate picking his favourites, experience of being a key feature at tournaments has to come into play, this is emphasised even more if players like henderson and Sterling aren’t gonna be there.

This is by far the best list I've seen so far, only change I'd make is Curtis Jones in for Gallagher who's been playing as a 10 for most the season ahead of caicedo and Enzo Maybe, if you really wanted to, can afford to leave Fikayo at home for one of Bowen/Gordon/Grealish

The guaranteed starting players for England: Kane, Saka, Rice, Bellingham, Maguire and Pickford. If it's a very big match and not a test match or friendly where the gaffer is just trying things, these are the players that will 100% start, plus maybe Walker.
How do you take Rashford and not take Bowen?
