  • We all go through many of those kinds of mistakes. That's how we learn. I pretty much have done all of those and more over the years. Joining a bee club and volunteering some time with an advanced beekeeper with 10 or more colonies and several years of experience will help a lot. Shadowing him or her and asking if they can mentor you will also give you some hands on knowledge in working and inspecting your own hives. Thanks for your video.

  • It sounds like you would enjoy doing splits over double screen divider board like Bob Binnie. That way you can make a small split, but you still get the warmth from the large colony below them.

  • I suggest totally sealing hives and tilting forward a tad to let condensate drip down inside front face and out ledge.use mylar bubble wrap.

  • You are doing an awesome job especially considering how fast you have grown. I have been doing it longer but you are so far ahead of me.

    • Beekeeping is one of those fields that makes you a forever learner. There is still so much for me to learn!! My suggestion, start keeping nucleus colonies. The smaller hives make you learn sooooo much just bc it is a smaller hive so it is easier to see different aspects of the hive since it is on a quicker time line than a normal 10 frame.

    • @@beefitbeekeeping This is my first year using nucs. I'm painting a dozen or so of them now. I can't find the queen in a big hive to save my life.

  • I'm in S.C. and went thru my 5 hives at home . End result was I lost 1 hive to robbing last week. Might have had a old queen in the hive unless she was gone already. Pluss Is I got pulled foundation early in our season for splits. We have had some crazy weather which is still coming. Also did not know yellow jasmine was toxic and i have alot in my home yard

  • You can't wax foundations too much!!! The more the faster they will draw it out. But you have to use pure beeswax

    @garyRt23Bees@garyRt23Bees2 ай бұрын
    • Yes that is why I corrected myself in the video, showing that I once thought it was bc I waxed them too much but I now know it was bc of the source of beeswax I was using ☺️

  • I've had capped queen cells, and still had the original queen.

  • To be clear they won't swarm if the cell is uncapped. After the cell is capped, they swarm. You might have a day or two after the cell is capped before they swarm.

  • Check out Mel Disselkoen; Michigan beekeeper and has his own splitting technique. Been using it for a while and its amazingly successful. I have to adjust his calendar for my area, but for yours, you can use it exactly as presented. Will solve many of your 'mistakes'

  • Min 5:11 sure looks like an introduced queen is getting balled

    @SourwoodFarm@SourwoodFarm2 ай бұрын
    • Yes that was a queen that was getting balled but it was not one I introduced otherwise I would have saved her. The bees were balling this one for some other reason so I just let them continue on with their decision.

  • Cool apiary, however, the piles of old tires ruins the ambiance. Can u get rid of the old tires?

    @davidsoloninka7742@davidsoloninka77422 ай бұрын
    • Yes we are working on that. We don’t own that property, we just have permission to place our bees there, ground hogs like to live in the tires tho and lots of mosquitoes 😭

  • I an a lot of people use those lids . Are you building your own equipment??. I use the double bubble to put between the lid an the hive . What ever you do is always always always have the back of your hives higher than the front so if any water gets in it will run out the entrance. You talking about capped queen cells you said your queen had already gone are you saying the colony had already swarmed or are saying just the queen had gone with out the bees ??. When you are trying to get new foundation drown out I always feed a syrup that is thinner than 1 to 1.I use a mixture of 1-1/4 to 1 that is closer to nectar than using 1-1 mixtures an it is thinner an works better to get your frames built out an IF you are not planning to get any honey out of that colony this season you can try to feed while there is a flow on to help build frames but never feed on a hive you are going to sale honey off of . Hope this helps if you have questions let me know . Good luck on this season. Thanks
