  • Hi! How do you isolate the ROM chip from the rest of the circuit? I always assumed that as soon as you connect the clip-on probe and power the flash chip from the programmer, the MCU gets powered up too and takes over the SPI bus, rendering the programmer helpless. I've read that desoldering or cutting traces on the PCB is the only way to make it work - what approach did you go with? Thanks in advance!

    • For some devices you will need to take the steps you mentioned to isolate the chip, however for lots of cheap IoT devices I find this isn't the case. Either the power to the ROM from the programmer is not sufficient to also power the device properly or the programmer is either able to start reads via SPI before the primary program loader kicks in or after the bus is not in use. I always suggest only hardware hacking on devices you are okay with bricking or damaging, there is always the risk especially when interacting with device ROM you can damage or brick the device. - Andrew

    • I have a few cheap cams i would like to disassemble for parts/uses therein- either to modify or use its AP for other devices. I will happily recompense either with getting you more likes/subs/views etc or even monetarily. Ill list my email if or when you respond. Thanks your help will be much appreciated.

  • I really love your shorts, they are so educational. If I may ask, how did you learn all this?

    • A combination of my learning is from my background in engineering and working with embedded systems, the rest is mostly self-taught from my interest in taking things apart and seeing how they work. - Andrew. (And if you want to learn more, you might want to look into our IoT/hardware hacking course he teaches.)

  • Seeing that the flash memory uses spi, could you potentially just rewire it to another micro and dump it's contents that way?
