n this video, we going over the pros, cons, and damage report of my Tacoma after off-roading in Moab Utah. Overall, the new Tacoma did great, the low end power, longer wheel base, and the tires I chose all made for a great rig on the trail.
I feel the truck lacked though a little in the suspension department along with storage (it's a midsize so this is a stretch). Also, the vehicle made out pretty damage free aside from the exhaust pipe that hags WAY too low, and also my tow hitch that scrapped a bit.
Utah was absolutely stunning, so much so that I failed to record a bunch of video for you all. Next time!

I always appreciate the transparency and honesty. Glad you're having fun on your trips!
I appreciate that!
Awesome real world information Jon. Glad you had fun and safe. ✌🏻
Thanks 👍 it was a lot of fun!
Great video, Jon. You are always very informative and objective. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that!
Great honest review. Keep it up. That’s why I subscribe to your channel
I appreciate that!
You bought this rig for its purpose, well done! It looks amazing
Yes I did! Thank you!
It was given to him. He’s such a phony.
The con is how overpriced the new tacos are, the pro is also overpriced. 😂
Yea they definitely increased in price.
The Tacoma starts at $31k. How is it over priced?
Cuz everyone just focuses on the $65K trd pro lol
@@TRDJonno, cause every dealer is doing a markup on even the lower trims for a truck that is not rare. Toyota isn’t doing anything about that either which isn’t helping the cause
I like the transparency of the fourth GEN content
Thanks dude!
Nice Sunset! Nice Truck
Thanks man! Great times out west
Dude...bolt walking out of the passenger slider. Check it Jon.
Already on it. Thanks brotha!
💯
I came here to say that bolt 😂
Enjoying this Tacoma series…..Thanks for all your content
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you so much for your support man
excellent review dude !!!
Thanks dude!
Your videos make me happy 😊
Glad you like them!
You should look into getting a Body Armor Backbone Hitch Skid, it'll help protect the bumper.
Very informative! For the suspension, did you mean it tops out too easily? Basically too little down travel?
Correct. I didn’t know how to articulate that
@@TRDJon thanks for confirming. but hmmm that is a little disappointing.
Ghosted TRD was saying maybe the front sway bar could be removed too.
@@TRDJon pun intended 😂 articulate
Hi Jon, here George from Miami, Great video, most important is the best therapy for your OCD......Cheers buddy
Thanks man!!!!!
Informative video - very interesting on the spare tire. I wonder if the 6ft bed has more room for a spare. For the storage situation, are you planning to put on a tonneau cover or a topper of some kind?
I have since this video yes :)
Awesome Ride Man!!!! The collar lift is what I am concerned about, the Pre Mature - bottoming out on suspension droop is my main concern with adding an extra inch or two for lift as I want to take my Tundra SR light roading, but do not want to compromise ride quality, I might just stuff larger tires on it and call it a day! I would have loved to see a equally modded out Tundra ride with you guys and see truck for truck the difference. The midsize trucks have their advantages, but if you carry a large amount of goods, the Twin Turbo V6 in a full size might be the way to go! lots of good options in any case!
Yea there were no full sized trucks with us at all. Bit tight of a trail for sure! The kit is good for light off road and road use but anything really more than that it will be ok but you definitely would need to consider a full suspension setup.
We’re twins when it comes to the tail pipes lol. Def get some skids I gotta do the same! Safe travels back to FL!
Thank you man! See you in a few weeks when I'm back in AZ
Sounds good I should have the 4 runner back by then lol
Good test.
Thank you! Sorry for the lack of content, Moab was just so stunning I failed to record.
In building one on the website I see they (Toyota) offers an off road tail pipe that doesn’t hang down like that one. Good to know it may be needed. Definitely with you on the non-hybrid seat storage being a great benefit
Good to know!!!
Makes you wonder what toyota was thinking when they give high clearance rear but then stick the exhaust pipe so low
Yea honestly didn’t make sense to me at all
I wonder if it was for regulatory reasons? Same reason for the air dam.. has to leave the factory with it, even though they know people are going to change it.
Just coming through to support!
Thanks brotha!!
Check out the sumo springs bump stops. Put them on my second gen and like em. You can get variable density options
Will do!!!
I’m really looking forward to seeing a 2 door 4th gen in person.
Hopefully we start seeing them soon
Good job with this video. Did you try to fit the spare tire by first deflating it? Obviously, you would need an air compressor with you but you would need that anyway.
I did not no. But it was hitting the track bar and hitch pretty badly.
Would replacing the bump stops with Sumo Springs help with the rear suspension? I would guess they already have them for the gen 4 Tacoma.
It would. And maybe for me with the weight in the back, a stiffer spring
Nice truck! What is the height of your truck from ground to the top of your fin?
Mmmm I’d say maybe 6.5’
Hope you tighten that bolt that was hanging on your side step on the passenger side Jon I noticed it when you were showing the plastic skid plates
I have. Completely busted the standoff lol.
Can you start engine? let's hear how it's sounds. better than Vespa scooter?
Hell yeah! Putting it to use like a truck should be used. Glad it's not just sitting in a garage looking mint hahaha
Too expensive to just sit in the garage lol
Hi Jon would you upgrade this truck to the TRD Off Road IForce Max?
In time, but I really don’t like losing the under seat storage
Nice truck! Not sure if I would beat my taco up as much as you, but thats what truck was designed for good for you!
Thanks 👍
honest question, if it wasn't for your need/want to provide the newest content on the newest Toyota vehicles, what would be your go to Toyota that you would daily? I'm honestly stumped between a 2nd gen Tundra or a 4th gen Tacoma.
So driving them both, I’d say Tacoma. This truck stock was great for sure. Still is, but the MPG and what I’d use the truck for, I’d pick this. Keep in mind, I don’t have kids so I don’t need a full size cabin.
Is the hitch removable? Bummer about the spare tire situation. Great review though! Putting it through its paces.
Thanks! I’m not sure how integrated it is into the frame.
Should have been called Trailscraper. Raised the price $20k for worse angles. Thnx Toyota 👍
I guess you didn’t listen to the video lol
285/75r17? No lift? Or do you have leveling kit? I can't remember. And a big rack and tent on the back? I think the truck did a pretty bad ass job considering! How did the trans temps do with all the extra weight?
They were solid. Below half bars. It has a 2/1” kit on it from Westcott Designs.
@TRDJon do you like you 285 tires ? Would you have gone bigger like 295 or even 35 tires?
I do for sure. I wouldn’t go bigger at all personally.
what kind of mpg are you seeing with the 285/75/17 wheels and tires?
Around 17
Dude! Im in N PHX working & I kept seeing badass Tacomas. Little did I know, Westcott Designs is 1 block away from me 😂
Bro! Hahahah there you go!
Can you fit the tire when you deflate it? You have a compressor so it doesn’t need to be inflated.
Could try that for sure
Jon, I believe you should have waited and got the trd pro,I believe it's done set up ready for what you like doing off-road!
I do like the pro but the price is up there man.
How much do the wheels and tires weight over stock? Are the tires Load E or C?
They are C load rating. I need to weigh them. The scale wasn’t working when we installed them unfortunately
I am already have problems with my turbo.... The engine/turbo cant keep up with the weight I have added. The engine is overheating. Toyota told me that there is pretty much nothing I can do.... Never had this problem with my 3rd gen
What weight? Did you block the coolers upfront? With this weight going through the mountains my temps stayed low personally
Overworked 4 cylinder turbo on a truck. Everybody called it months ago.
Wonder what the Trailhunter would do for your reviews( Moab)
I feel it would be the same as this. Minus the tailpipe.
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if the Trailhunter would have done a little better.
Maybe when you remove the tent you wont feel the bump stops so quickly. Also, did you try installing the spare without air in it?
I didn’t. And yes that would help for sure
Can rwd 4 runner do most of the moab trials without the 4x4?
Stock 4runner 5th gen
Not if it would be best. You really needed 4WD for the trail
Does the Tacoma require premium fuel? I saw a post today from a Land Cruiser FE owner that showed the premium fuel required sticker on the fuel door.
It does not require it.
Recommended but not required. Computer will just cut boost/timing when necessary.
Will you be at the Toyota Jamboree?
Yes I will 👍🏼
Question? What about the other trucks? Sane damages? Or only yours
Yea a lot of trucks were hitting their hitches
What’s your overall quality opinion of your new Taco, compared to your experience with the issues you’ve had with your Tundras? Does the 24 Tacoma have similar glaring issues?
Not even close imo
That’s good news for a first production year.
Jon, did your transmission oil get to hot? I experienced that off-road staying in 4hi. Maybe i should of been in 4lo
It did not my friend!
@@TRDJon Good to hear, maybe it was just user error.
@@TRDJon was he in 4hi?
@@TRDJon Just hope it does not become an issue with the 4th gen
I wonder if the suspension would’ve performed better without the tent and cab rails??
Possibly. It had some weight over the back for sure. The suspension is super soft back there for sure
That defeats the purpose of a Trail"hunter".
Why didn’t you remove the factory spare to save weight?
I should have actually dude.
First time I saw the new taco that tow-hitch was a red flag. After market rear bumper is unavoidable.
For sure hangs low too
Did WD leave that bolt loose during installation?
No, it busted the standoff
1:37 loose bolt
Good eye, we noticed that the next day at the shop. Thanks!
Man loose bolt when you were showing the rock sliders
1:37 Yup. Looks slightly bent forward too, or could be the camera lens effect.
Yep! Didn’t see that during the video but we caught it later at Westcott Designs. I broke stand off.
A pro would be you made it without breaking down
I mention that at the end of the video. Off roaded then drove 15hrs
You were warned about that low tail pipe. Seen a video where they take it off and put a stubby under the truck.
Thats what I will be doing to my truck as well.
Question @ 8:55, what if you deflate the tire so much that it would fit if squeezed in and simply purchase an air compressor to top it off? Would that 33.8 or even a 34 inch tire fit in there?
Man I don’t know if it would. But worth a shot. I don’t have high hopes thought
For the cost I am still absolutely amazed toyota uses plastic for their skid plates now.
When is the 25’ 4Runner TRD Offroad being released?!
October ish of this year
I have the same truck. Okay… stock version. It amazes me how that little four cylinder mimics a diesel. Your right. Low end torque. My only negative so far… no trip odometer button. I hate that. I hate going through the menus to get it.
Hey dude! When you are in the “customize gauge section” you need to press the arrow to the outside of the screen. So either left or right depending on which side you are trying to customize. When you do this you can select more items to be shown on the cluster. I did this to add the trip. Lemme know if that made sense.
I wish there was room to squeeze in a tiny muffler with that axle exhaust pipe; even the one Toyota sells doesn't have one. It's not too much louder than stock exhaust but I prefer to keep my exhaust as quiet as possible
Great video Jon! Too bad this vehicle is an absolute fail for the price. I think we all knew that when we saw the unveil last year. Toyota has really missed the mark on the Tacoma and likely the 4runner. As usual keep us posted but Tacoma is at this point over
You can probably negotiate them down since more are out and available not. The average Tacoma price is around 40K.
@@TRDJon I've given that some consideration and visited wilson toyota in Houston to test drive and check out but overall for the tacoma concept (coming from an 04) isn't quite there with the 2.4, Mexico build, overall design and price. For some this might be a great truck but for someone like myself that is constantly in deep snow in Iowa or offroading in South Dakota or Wyoming this new build just isn't going to cut it without a lot of upgrades. Regardless thanks for the great videos! Your channel is always very informative and great to watch!
For sure man! I hope you find something that fits all your needs! I appreciate you watching.
Trailer hitch skid plates..search Tacoma lifestyle the “ Torq Hitch plate .($149.00) NO 2 from Supreme Suspension ( $205.00)…Aloha
Question- If you were not TRD Jon and only bought one vehicle to build an off roader. would it be a new tacoma TRD OR or a 2025 4runner TRD OR
Tacoma. I enjoy off roading a truck more than an SUV.
@@TRDJon thanks. We want to travel more to the Redrock and debating on what one to get. The 4runner would probably be better for road trips.
Depends on how you build the truck out ya, but the 4R is comfy for sure.
@@TRDJon I actually sat in a Tacoma yesterday.. I feel i like the set up more than my 22 Tundra. Felt comfy. The only thing is. it is hard to justify paying close for a Taco TRD OR as my Tundra Sr5 TRD OR. lol
I can’t believe the price of a trd pro 65g no way it’s worth it! Now I’m waiting for the 4 runner 2025 trd off road premium for my first new car and first Toyota I’m afraid of that price now. Such a shame what Toyota is pricing these.
So many people forget the 3rd gen TRD Pro was just $41k when it first came out. Disgusting price gouging.
And then 9 years later that same pro was 53K for an automatic. So that one gen of truck went up 12K…
Yea it’s wild. I’d just build a trd or now for sure.
check your slider bolts!
Thanks!
which is your go to truck? Tundra or Tacoma?
Tacoma over the new Tundra for me man
Yeah with the power and the GPM, it would be mine too.
I’ll take the 6th Gen 4Runner with the MPG’s and passenger hauling as I have my ‘23 Tacoma ACLB to go Overlanding
What size of tires are those?
285/75/17
Trade it in for the 2024 Tacoma Trd pro!
I’m good honestly. I’m enjoying this one a bit too much at the moment
don't get the appeal of sending your vehicles over rocks. But glad you like it.
Thanks man!
A longer wheel base is not a good thing?
No? Sorry if that was confusing.
A PICKUP TRUCK WITH REAR COIL SPRING IS LIKE A SUV OR HONDA RIDGELINE. I LOADED UP 8 TIRES 32 INCH A/T AND 8 WHEELS MADE THE REAR OF MY 3RD GEN TACO WITH LEAF SPRINGS TO SAG BUT NOT TO THE BUMP STOP. CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITH COIL SPRINGS. TOYOTA WENT BACK TO PROPER LEAF SHACKES IN THE 4TH GEN AS A HILUX. SAFE TRIP BACK HOME JON!
THANKS!!!
Not sure how you had a bolt back out of your rock slider at 1:37
Already one it brotha
the low end torque of the 4-cyl is going to make it a classic and highly sought engine for many years. Low end torque is why people love those old 4runner V8 and that was totally lost with the weak V6. Now you can have the best of both worlds: light engine with low end torque. A true masterpiece of modern engineering. ...now shame the truck itself is so overpriced however. The USD to YEN is very favorable for toyota to consider lowering prices....but no! greed must rule.
Yea the prices are high for sure. I see them selling under MSRP soon
Theres nothing sought after for this 2.4 4 cylinder. its an EPA compliant disposable motor that Toyota had no choice but to put into all of their vehicles for parts cross compatibility. if you want sought after its gonna be 4.0s, 4.6s & 5.7s
If you drive one you will think differently. Time will tell. But Toyota has made solid 4 bangers for decades. Several have been turbo too
@@upperleftnorthwest4278 best low end torque in decades using science and math to achieve a better balanced vehicle free from the dreaded oversized and heavy front end. While it is still a pickup so 50/50 weight balance is impossible unladen, the heavy v8 and underpowered v6 were not doing handling any favors. A classic is born.
@@cmdrls212that low end torque is great but whats the point when the rear end is converted to coil spring, essentially reducing payload & defeating the purpose of buying a truck in the first place. People want these things to ride like cars, they need to go buy a ford maverick if that want both
Props to actually taking it off road!
Thanks man. I have other videos too with it off road. Thanks for watching!
Um. Why were you hauling the factory spare around? Extra weight, no use at all if you are carrying your matching spare. If it were me, I'd keep the spare mounted upright on a locking mount against the cab or parralell with the wheel well. And you could us some sort of bed storage system for your mis things? This is the confusing point to me on the TRD Pro/Trail Hunter trims. The cab is not large enough to use for much storage, the bed is too short for real truck use (hauling loads, bikes won't fit, etc). The target audience for these trucks is off roaders (supposedly). It seems to me that a 4Runner or Land Cruiser would be the better choice for that duty. More interior space, better suspension (5th gen 4 vs 3rd gen taco at least), waaaay cheaper, and overall, built for purpose. Anyway, great vid with some good pros/cons.
Yea I plan to do that for sure. Cuz the tire carrier I have too lowers the suspension too much due to the soft coils. I took the tire out for my recent trip. I keep it for the longer trip in case i got a couple tires punctured in MOAB
The exhaust tip on the Trailhunter dumps exhaust before the rear axle. !So no trail dragging likely
For sure
That Wescott pre-collar kit negatively affects your ride. I had those installed on my 2022 Tundra and they turned the truck into a stiff and jarring ride. Wouldn’t waste my money on that again.
Did you get it aligned properly?
Yes
That exhaust placement was a real miss by Toyota.
Yea dude, not sure why it was so low
The whole truck was a miss
lol that tail pipe
Cooked
Damaged 4th gen truck. Just like that. Did you snap a front axle! lol
Nope. It was pretty solid actually. Definitely needs an alignment lol
Great truck but toyota needs to chill with the pricing
Should be under MSRP soon. If not already.
If no tents for you, what’s the next plan?
Bed topper
Get trd off road and upgrade it or trailhunter
TRD OR. For sure.
@@TRDJondo you have the electronic stabilizer disconnect on this truck?
That exhaust pipe placement was the first thing I wanted to see you remove.
I will be on Tuesday on Wednesday.
Larger heavy tires will kill suspension
In a way yes. But this isn’t much heavier than stock.
Wrap it in lunar rock
Would be curious to see how that looks!
@@TRDJon just a thought. I love that color and it would be unique to see the 24’s in it. Love your vids!
Thanks!
Toyota dropped the ball with this
They cut so many corners nowadays it's unbelievable with these new vehicles! If I'm not mistaken plastic oil pan plastic skid plates Jesus Christ help these manufacturers 🤦
Yea it’s like a hard plastic. Bit less than the last gen. Which still had plastic.
@@TRDJon my 3rd gen Tacoma 2022 off-road has a metal oil pan & a metal skid plate... I'm not sure what model your referring to being plastic on the last gen? 🤔 Also the back of the rear seats is now carpeted rather than the hard plastic which is definitely a benefit to me because of the work I do, it just seems like things that were standard on the previous Gen & made it badass n' rugged they skimped out on that shit the small stuff mattered to me, I guess it's fine for other people 🤷
The seats fold differently on this truck, maybe that’s why unfortunately. I think there is a metal on this ones oil pan. But the front and gas are a composite
Love you’re able to list the dislikes 👌🏻
More coming soon.
Yea gotta be careful. Toyota blacklists tubers and journalists that hit too hard with the truth.
I’ve made plenty of dislike videos in the past and have documented my whole tundra issues journey. I guess it is all how you go about it. Mindless rant vs trying to be productive in finding a solution. But I free to share what I like and dislike. Some Toyota reps have even talked to me about the dislikes I’ve had along with others on vehicles that will be fixed (or even have been fixed) in the future. Nice to see them listening
The hooks on the hitch look very thin and cheap
They aren’t
Collar lifts are lame. Get some Dobinsons and be done with it.
Got something coming soon. Just talked with an amazing company with products coming 😉
Dudes got killer calves lol
lol
This is why I don’t buy off roaders. Seeing scratches on my car will bother me.
Not on the vehicle, only on aftermarket parts that can be taken off and back to OEM.
So if you had a lift on it you wouldve cleared everything
I do have one
If you're off-roading, the spare tire should be removed from under the truck.
It is now
Why would u buy a brand new truck and take it offroad it lol. I would keep mine in the garage
Why even buy it then?
@@TRDJon money to burn??
