How To OPTIMIZE Your Immune System & FIGHT VIRUSES! (Including COVID) | Roger Seheult
Subscribe to Friday Five for my popular weekly newsletter - my tips, my experience, my inspiration, what’s working for me. A high five from me to you: drchatterjee.com/fridayfive
Dr Roger Seheult is a quadruple board certified intensive care doctor and wants to empower all of us to prevent ill health. And when it comes to understanding inflammation and immunity, I can’t think of a better person to explain the science. Whether you’re worried about coronavirus, you want to avoid other winter bugs, or your goal is fending off chronic disease, he is full of actionable tips to help.
We begin by discussing the link between inflammation and immunity. We speak in depth about the link between low vitamin D levels and coronavirus, how it might be used as both preventive and treatment, and exactly how much we should all be taking. Vitamin D is produced on exposure to sunlight, which leads us to talk about the importance of light - and dark - at the right times, for our circadian rhythms. This of course impacts on sleep and what Roger has to say about its vital role in immunity might just persuade any night owls out there to turn in early tonight.
From hot and cold therapies to nutritional supplements, food to forest bathing, stress-relief to spirituality, there’s so much useful stuff here. I hope you enjoy this conversation and can use it as a toolkit for feeling your best as we head into the colder months.

My husband is an outdoor person, daily. He is a landscaper, so he get daily doses of vitamin D through natural means, the sun. Even on weekends, he stays outdoors quite a bit of the day. Since Sunday is our day of worship, he only gets a few hours on Sunday. He was recently given a healthy heart screening, and he was in the top percentile for the healthiest in his age group. In 46 years of marriage, he has had very few times of being sick. Most of those times were due to an accident....broken bones, etc. he has never had an infection of any kind, to my knowledge, nor a headache.
I question your opinion. He must spend all day naked(not well tolerated by others) & the oils raised must be left on the skin overnight for absorption to the liver/kidney, where the Vitamin D is made. If he has a methylation defect in VDR & does not supplement, you may want a life insurance policy. Vitamin D deficiency leads to medical complications. Over 50 yo we make far less Vit D.

As an old Malaysian Chinese person nearly 80 years old and living in Melbourne, Australia, I do go to bed and sleep by 10 am but get up at 3.30 AM. Dr Matt Walker whom you interviewed was brilliant on the topic of sleep. I love to hear what Dr Walker and Dr Seheult have to say about sleep for older people. I heard Dr Walker mentioned perhaps older people should take melatonin. Dr Walker was kind hesitant. There is about 12-14 percent of older people in the Australian population and globally there are heaps of us. Most of us may well be the group that watches youtube on topics to do with health and ageing. I love you to focus on some topics that pay special emphasis on the aged. Thanks for reading thus far.
Good discussion. I’ve been following Roger for a long while. As healthcare professionals - we do shift work - my circadian rhythm has been ruined after 4+ decades! That’s our downfall. It took me 3 years to get my vitamin D level up to normal after I saw an endocrinologist. Now my vitamin D level is at optimal level for chronic diseases. Deficiency is a silent disease. Stay well folks!
Can you elaborate your story ? How much vitamin D did you use in these years ? Of course I will check my levels, I am doing it for 5 yeats now ,but I am still just over 35 ng ,I want to go to higher level. Thanks
@@Lolipop59 About this time last year I doubled my Vit D intake to 2 x 2,000 IU per day. Then in December I alternated 4,000 with 5,000 IU every other day. In mid March I had my levels checked. I was at 99 nG/ml ( I think she said per ml) which the nurse said was still in the normal range. Wonder how much you have to take to get it to high ?
Arm writeing this comment in 2023 millions were taken vitamin D...Two years ago for Prevention of COVID 19 millions still caught the virus after taken vitamin D maybe you need to take much more of different medications to Prevent COVID 19.
@@professorparrot3141I thought 10000IU was the daily requirement.
The first time I got Covid… literally what finally what made me feel better was laying down out in the sun … it’s like I instinctively just pulled my skirt as high as possible & pulled my shirt up exposing my tummy and on my face .. luckily it was still decently cool and I felt 90% better after that sun bath!!! When my 80 year old dad got it almost 2 years later I told him to go out on his porch and get some sun along with his supplements… he felt better also :)
When I initially looked at this video to watch, I saw that it was almost 2 hours In length and I thought they can’t say this in 10 minutes? So, I almost didn’t watch it but I put an earpiece and did some house work listening to see if it was worth the two hours and it was. I definitely pray with my patients and students. I haven't ever had a patient or student decline the need for prayer. I believe that people feel a stronger connection because of prayer, and that is a beautiful feeling. I believe that love needs to be implemented into medical care. ♥️ Dr. B. ♥️ 7/26/22 Clarification Edit: No patient or student is forced to pray. The prayer takes place at THEIR prompting, not mine. I privately pray for all of my patients and students.
Maybe they decline because you are in a position of power and they feel they might either be disadvantaged or embarrass you if they say no. This in my opinion is not good professional practice; you could alienate patients who don't share your beliefs or discredit your treatment ..also there are many people who have suffered at the hands of the church..I really don't need to spell that out for you do I?. Surely , if this is your belief ..you could pray for your patients without involving them and it would be just as effective .
Thank you for your caring. I wish there were more professionals around Ike you. Praying is definitely a calming and beautiful feeling.
@@ziggyzugg They can always say no if they do not want to pray. No one is forcing them to pray. Physicians have the freedom to practice what they believe just like everyone else and offering to pray with a patient is a beautiful, loving, caring gesture. In the USA, 9 out of 10 people believe in God or some sort of higher power (as they should, since it's scientifically proven that matter is not self-creating). Because the vast majority of people DO believe that there is a God, most of them will be receptive to prayer. You do not have to be a part of a specific church to pray. It sounds like you are making this a personal issue based on your own beliefs (or issues with beliefs) instead of acknowledging it as the loving gesture that it is.
@@ErBeary ok.. a Muslim doctor sats he wants to pray over you? You know that the prayer is to Allah... surely you wouldn't want to reject that loving gesture...also imagine a Muslim doctor actually doing that ?? Can you? Think about it for a few seconds. .

Nothing is being forced.

Fantastic and informative discussion. When I had my first child I had a room with a huge window with lovely trees right outside and green lawns. It was September ..sunny and blue skies. I was in 7 days after c-section. I felt great..quick recovery. My 2nd was in a different hospital...fluorescent lights, no window. In 5 days this time after a second c-section.. I felt dreadful. Had no idea whether it was night or day...slow recovery. It was that window and the natural light that was the difference!
That hospital is very lgnorance on health view Help then to know through your experience

Get good sleep. Eat a whole foods diet eliminating inflammatory grains, fruits and veggies. Move your body as much as possible. Manage stress. Get outside in the sunshine.
I’m glad you are not my doctors. I’m on keto and I have reversed my T2D and no longer need my BP medication’s. I recently nursed my great grandson who lives with me through Covid and of course I didn’t catch it. No vaccines but plenty of D3 and K2. Supplemental vitamin D is probably THE most pivotal substance you can take for protection from viruses in general. Take Vitamin C and zinc and other supplements as well.
They had this sunlight wisdom In the first half of the last century. The hospitals had big doors opening onto verandahs and the nurses would wheel the patients out onto the verandahs for half an hour or so during the day. So they had some knowledge or observation that sun!ight helped people recover

Great presentation. Thanks doc for the immune boosters. I love the swiss cheese analogy . It's a wholistic approach. The 7th day IS the sabbath. It's right there in the bible. We all need to take a breather and give thanks and connect to a higher power. God knew that. That's why he left us the example. He himself rested from all His work . That's why He gave us the sabbath. Great lecture. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Listened twice, and have shared it. Kudos.
That’s exactly what I thought when he talked about 7 day cycles. All we need is in the Bible. God is great!

I've taken my health into my own hands and it's been a struggle. These videos help a lot. This week (starting April 16), I made it my goal to reset my circadian rhythm. All week I've been waking up early and sitting outside in the sun first thing, then I go for a hike up the hill and into the woods. My sleep was so backwards as I'm dealing with chronic illnesses and autoimmune diseases and I'm dirt poor, so it's a real struggle. I'm focusing with tunnel vision this week, and I'm actually sleeping at a decent hour. By 7pm I start to dim the lights, by 8ish they're off and by 9 I'm asleep, if not before. The day after I began this, my body started getting signs of a virus. So far, it's fairly mild, but with my autoimmune and chronic illnesses, I'm very aware this could end badly. I'm really hoping this is just my body fighting back against all the good I'm doing for it, and not the plague. Having autoimmune, my body is attacking itself. I tested negative 2 days ago and will test again today. I don't have the energy today to get up the hill, but I've sat in the sun, pumped extra vitamins, drank 2 healing teas, and now I'm going to rest while I listen to more of these videos and play a video game. Hopefully I have the energy later for a walk, but I've been doing great all week so I don't feel so bad taking a day to rest. Thank you for arming me with knowledge they aren't teaching us in school.. the circadian rhythm/light exposure issue alone ought to be taught to everyone! It wasn't addressed as much in this video, but it's available in several others. Makes me wonder what else we don't know about. It's like hunting for treasure, which can be fun (i really enjoy listening to these while sitting in the sun), but I so wish they taught this to us when we were younger. Thank you for teaching us now!
I totally hear you. I have autoimmune too. I wish I had known about these things a long time ago as well. I hope you are doing well.

This is more important than ever at a time like this
A lot of plants contain extremely inflammatory substances such as oxalates and lectins. Spinach, Almonds, Raspberries and blueberries are high in oxalates, black and green teas are high too. Also the doctors involved in the study were on a high protein low carbohydrate diet. The keto diet is high in good fats (not necessarily very high in protein)which also happen to contain fat soluble vitamins like A D and E.
Wish all doctors were like you guys. Thank you for a wonderful discussion.
I agree if all doctors had the same training to see holistically and consider how to optimise health of the organism that would be revolutionary! Let’s bring naturopathic medicine to the forefront . Brilliant talk
The circadian rhythm points were so informative.. get outside in the morning! Fresh air, birds, green improves health. Sip your morning beverage outside! Stop looking at screens late… enjoy the dark and be in bed at 10pm !! 🔅🔆🤩😎
Circadian rhythm is driven by healthy microbial composition. Healthy diet, getting rid of processed foods, is key. Studies have shown that taking larger amount of Vitamin D, 5 000 iu is recommended by our doctor, is more efficient than daily amounts.
A doctor on TV said before that we NEED MINIMUM 6, 000 IU IN OUR BODY TO USE DAILY .
An early pioneer in the study of diet and health, DDS, Dr Kelly, put his family on a meat free diet at the time. As time went by, his wife became very unwell. After resisting for many months, Kelly changed her diet to include meat. She recovered quickly. Kelly wrote articles about this and his conclusion that there is no one diet that suits all people. This is important information for today's researchers. One size can not fit us all.

What about Vitamin D3 - My understanding is that Vit D is actually a hormone.and Vitamin D2 is easy for the body to manufacture from Vit D3 but not vice versa. I had a Vit D deficiency which surprised me because I love being outside and I love being in the sun as much as possible. I am currently living in Switzerland - so Northern Hemisphere but I’m British born and bred, so I’m further South and I spend more time outside than when I was in Britain, although not so often in direct sunlight as I did when in the UK. When my Vit D levels returned to “normal”, my Swiss doctor recommended that I continue to supplement with Vit D3 (it comes in a form that is already in oil - presumably that counts as fat and is a better form than another brand which came preserved in alcohol. What about Vit B complex, Vit C and Zinc and Echinacea? We can’t rely on our food to contain everything it used to contain which would perhaps have been sufficient in the past, but now even organic fresh vegetables seem to be less nutrient dense. We eat more processed foods than ever and they’re full of all sorts of additives. Then there’s the pesticides, antibiotics fed to fatten up animals bred for human consumption and other chemicals from industry and the domestic cleaning products which we use have found their way into our groundwater, rivers, seawater, soil, vegetable produce, animal feed and eventually into our human food. I don’t see how we can rely on modern food to provide sufficient nutrients……..? !
Oh they got to processed foods
Sun elevation need to be greater than 45 degrees to produce enough D3.
Suet fat , no rickets , good bone health , good marrow , , Good marrow good immunity fighters. . Great source of vit D , Cook with suet , They improved England's health during ww2 ,because everyone ate suet , in most foods , baking pastry , dumplings puddings , Less sugar then too .
Hi Saskia, to answer your questions: The D3 level in your depends on several factors.. As answered before, the sunlight needs to be strong enough. You don't go for a full burned skin, but turned to light pinkish is great for Kaukasians. In optimal conditions you will then have received 10,000-15,000 IU Vit D3 (this is 250-375 mcg.) Your total available D3 reserve build up over time depends on total dose of sunlight, your skin colour (pigments in dark skins are there to catch UV light before it damages skin), weight (D3 dissolves in fat), your age, genetic factors and presence of disease (e.g. heart problems). Have you vit D3 measured a few times with intervals of several months, if you can arrange it. Vitamin C: most mammals produce their own vitamin C! Primates, humans, some bats don't. If we could, we would probably produce some 5-15 grams per day (do your own research, it is interesting to see how much e.g. a goat produces per day :D). I think the RDA of 60 mg per day is crazy... in the past sailors died of scurvy because they lacked vit C, these days we die of atherosclerosis, which has as a root cause low grade vit C deficiency (see Linus Pauling and Dr Rath). For zinc and vit B: eat some nuts, hemp seeds, and the like
What's the best vitamin d supplement easily absorbed and should it be D3 or d2

I am 68 year old, 200 pounds and take 10,000 iu daily with a 94 ng D25 blood test. I use to be deficient but now I feel great and don't have skin problems. I used to take less daily but my levels were in the 30 ng and now I find I feel better when I am in the 60-100 ng D25 level. My wife, similar age and 115 pounds, takes 2,000 iu daily, gets a lot of sunshine and recently tested at 58 ng D25. So age, weight, sunshine, genetics and diet will affect the dosage.
Yours is the level that I would want.. I have had my level up to 110

52:30 says a "high protein, low carb diet had almost 4 times risk for moderate to severe Covid19." That doesn't sense. I don't think it's that simple because I'm on the ketogenic diet and I no longer need blood pressure pills (after 30 years), I am no longer pre-diabetic, my AIC is normal, I now eat very healthily and I lost a lot of weight. There's something else going on here. Whatever it is, it's Big.
Most of the studies that have been done abot low carb diets have NOT REALLY been low carb. They usually involve more than 150 grams of carbs (!!!). That's definitely NOT LOW CARB. Plus we don't know what other junk the subjects were consuming.
Your are correct! It’s probably also because of foods that are not KETOGENIC! And the amounts consumed not keto friendly ⚠️
You forgot to mention the fact that vitamin D isn't able to get into the cells without people using magnesium on a regular basis as they are synergistic. I use ancient magnesium oil or lotion as a daily regime along with my vitamin D. Now I have just found out that I am very low in vitamin B1 which also needs magnesium for it to work correctly. It also helps you sleep better & I suffer from lack of sleep so I am hoping for an improvement as I address this issue.
Yup. Magnesium, D & K2!

Little did I know I was torquing my innate immune system. Really great podcast.
So good! Right from the start! Amazing interview! Great job And thank you!
Such a great video and so useful ! Some great tips - thank you both
Thank you so much for this fantastic interview
It’s wonderful. Rangan that you care about everyone getting equal advantages. Equal access to healthy food. Etc. Here in Florida berries are so expensive. Not affordable for most of population.
Try Aldi's
Buy frozen berries if they are too pricey.
A very interesting conversation. I got a lot out of it. Thank you.
This broadcast was absolutely great. Thank you. Much appreciation.
Excellent interview, full of useful information. Thank you.
It is so good to hear folks talk about personal responsibility regarding health.
This is a fantastic educational discussion for all of us. Worth listening this conversation .
This is one of the best interviews on health I've ever listened to...as someone who also works in ICU I'm fascinated by how high tech critical care was integrated with cultural wisdom/ spirituality and astronomical cycles...love, love it!!
Me too. So thankful for all their hard work my dr. tells me NOTHING!
Thank You these topics are life saving
I'm dark skinned, over 50 and live in the Northern States. I started taking 50,000 in of vitamin D3 along with K2 last year after listening to a podcast with Dr. Grundy. Never felt better! Leveled off to 20,000 after getting both Pfizer vaccines. Will be getting the booster soon since I work in healthcare and going back to 30,000 ius for the winter. Thanks for all of the info!
🐑
From your writing it is not clear when you take these amounts... Is it per day, per week or per month? If you can afford, have your D3 level tested by a lab. Max advisable level is 100-120 ng/ml, I myself prefer 50-70. (For nmol/L multiply values by 2.5). These values were measured in hunter/gatherer tribes walking minimally clothed in tropic areas.
@@rredding How much are you taking to maintain this level ? Thank you
@@Lolipop59 Dita4911, I noticed that my answer didn't get through, so I must have made an error. I place it again.. I take 8,000 - 10,000 IU D3 per day, with Magnesium and Vit K2. Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble, as you probably know, so pls take it with (fat containing) food. D3 promotes absorption of Calcium. Especially when you take these "large" amounts of vitamin D3, there's the risk that Calcium is deposited in the kidneys, bladder and blood vessels where it wreaks havoc. K2 helps you to get this Calcium in your bones and teeth. Now about the advised amount of vitamin D3 per day... It actually depends on your metabolism and genetics, on your body weight and your current D3 reserve in your body. This reserve also depends on where you live (a lot of sunshine?), skin colour and body weight. Also, if you have e.g. a heart disease, your D3 reserve may be depleted! If possible, have your levels in the blood tested! You may want some 40-70 ng/ml. This may be of help: www.grassrootshealth.net/project/dcalculator/ You can calculate here for yourself.
What do you support on Dr Grundy?
This is so lengthy, but well worth listening to. Great information 🙏🏾
Another traditional early treatment to respiratory virus infection is breathing steam through the nose, often with tea tree oil drops in the water. The logic being that such viruses do not thrive in warm humid air (such as is present during summer months) and steam is about as warm and humid as we can get.
Tea tree and oregano together are antibiotic.
Will try that also fryers balsam over steam
So are you saying to breathe it in through steam but not to be taken in hot tea with a drop of the oil added or can you ingest the tea tree oil from young living in your hot drink?
@@believer2734 the whole point is to get the steam into the nasal passages and upper airways as that is where the virus reproduces. Drinking won't do this. Also, according to the pack I have, Tea Tree Oil should not be ingested at all.
THANK YOU both SO much!!!
This interview was helpful. I watch medcram and have learned so much. I really learned a lot from their last video about the spectrum of the sun and how it affects our sleep-wake cycle and more. Thank you for having him on!
This is one of the Best Videos Ever!!!!!!!!Great information that we can all apply to stay healthy!!!Thamk You Both so much for such an incredible video!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖🦋🦋🦋🌸
As long as you take enough vitamin K-2 ( 320 mcg )to use the calcium released by the vitamin D , you are correct, but if not you could end up with over calcification of your entire system.
320 ? Are sure that much lve been told 100 at least
Thank you very much for sharing this information!
Wonderful interview and so much info.
You are both so friendly and likable. Brilliant scientific educated experienced Men and Humanistic Thankyou Hopeful And exciting
This information will blow your mind! So crucial!
Your mention of the number 7 is promenant there are a few of those , for instance, 7 years bad luck, weather cycles, financial cycles, I new someone who used to have fits, it's started at 21 and ended abruptly at 27.
I do similiar hot and cold using a bath tub and outside of the tub pans with ice water for cooling the feet, wrist and forehead and ice water to drink. I also soak a towel in the hot bath tub and cover the trunk to chest helping keep the warmpth in the body.
colloidal silver is an undervalued health supp too. as it is antibacterial.
I have been supplementing 5000-10000 IU of vit D / day and just had my levels checked. Still low! Would love a vit D talk to talk more in Depth about this as it is a passion of mine as well... love the work you doing and really appreciating your podcasts at the moment. I am actively working on cooking food from scratch with as little to no preservatives, no gluten, dairy, sugar or added sugar. Still so much more to learn!
Are you taking it with Vitamin K, are you insulin resistant the list goes on plus vitam d takes a very long time to go up talking possibly many many months
Thank so much. I am not taking k2. Been taking this dose for a long time now but probably also need k2.
@@solids1451 thanks so much! I'm not taking k2 but good idea. I've been taking high vit d since Feb.
@@RebeccaBourhill01 No problem good luck to all of us because unfortunately for most people they only change after sickness health is wealth no matter what age.
@@solids1451 absolutely. I have fibromyalgia so constantly trying different non medication methods.
in 1964, my husband and our 26 month old son were living in Bayside, NY. I would take the time to read all sorts of books while my son took his afternoon nap. The book I read was called " The Cracker Factory" written by a very accomplished writer and later a movie producer. Her book was actually an auto biography. She wrote about her activities as an alcoholic housewife with 2 or 3 young children. She described what happened when she was driving under the influence of Alcohol with her children in the back seat. She was pulled over by a police officer, and as a result of her arrest she decided to check herself into an Asylum for rehabilitation. After a while she was allowed to go home to spend time with her children. There were more visits all coensiding with good behavior. On the first stay her youngest son got sick and started running a very high fever. She took her son into the bathroom undressed him , put him in the shower. She turned on the cold shower, plugged up the tub and immersed him while he sat in the tub. Overhead, she kept the extremely cold water over his head, the cold water shower continually drenching his body for approximately 15-20 minutes. His fever broke. I remembered this when I was faced with the same problem with my own son. He was sick with a temp.of 106 degrees. I undressed him, took him to the bathroom, placed him in the bathtub, plugged the tub and turned the cold shower on him allowing the cold water to accumulate around his body. He was crying, I knew it was painful for him, but that was my only choice. When I took him out, I wrapped him up in many towels and took his temperature. It had gone down to 103 1/2. I gave him some Children's Tylenol and dressed him in his PJ's. I put him in bed and called his doctor. He complemented me on acting so quickly. If I hadn't read that book I probably wouldn't have known what to other than giving him Tylenol and going to the hospital The credit goes to Joyce Rebetta Burdit, the author of The Cracker Factory.
So much good information in this conversation. Thank you
I’ve been taking vitamin D (10,000IU)per day for 4 years and as I watch this video, have tested positive for the C0v!d. 🤷♀️! I also take c,b, zinc, mk7-k2. Double vax Right now trying to get rid of a massive sore throat
When I was young my mother used to pile on the blankets, then when we started to sweat, temperatures dropped to normal, then she would wash us down, have done that to my own children, until meds crept into our lives. I also heard a nurse friend said she would put her children into the pool.
Wonderful informative video. Hopefully these doctors can be Advocates of health treatment changes. It's got to be more than just giving you a pill.
Also the elderly even if out in the sun, sometimes cannot process it and absorb it well, the body just doesnt work as well as we age, everything wears out. So supplementation is even more necessary for them. More nature and sun makes us feel better, wards off depression, and boosts immunity. Sleep quality is harder to establish for the elderly also. But there are nice youtube music videos that offer deep sleep delta wave sleep music, works well getting into deeper sleep cycles before bed. Nutrition absorption is also compromised as we get older. Liquid multivitamins and minerals are better absorbed by older persons. Exercise: there is a great DVD by Leslie Sansone that offers a 1, 2, 3 mile walk with upper body workout, and strength training right in front of your TV and it is a sweaty workout! Easy to do and no excuse about weather preventing exercise.
WOW!! I'm Going to bed NOW will save and watch the rest TOMOROW !! Many Thanks
Thank you. Very interesting and informative.
