Ali vs Quarry # 1st meeting #
* Oct. 26, 1970.
Following his successful defense of the heavyweight championship against Zora Folley in March of 1967, Muhammad Ali’s career soon came to a grinding halt. The following month he refused induction into the United States army to assist the war effort in Vietnam and was immediately arrested. The New York State Athletic Commission suspended his license and stripped him of his title and all other state athletic commissions quickly fell in line with the NYSAC.
It would be three-and-a-half-years before Muhammad Ali could compete in a boxing ring again.With the help of Georgia State Senator Leroy Johnson, Ali was able to get a boxing license in Georgia. On September 2, 1970, he boxed an eight-round exhibition at Morehouse College in Atlanta. It was the first time Ali had boxed in public since a six-round exhibition in Detroit, Michigan, on June 13, 1967.A fight between Ali and Quarry was arranged for October 26 at City Auditorium in Atalanta. Contracts were signed in New York City on September 10. The bout was promoted by House of Sports, Inc., headed by Senator Johnson, and by Sports Action Inc., headed by Harold Conrad. "People think now that the Supreme Court decision is what allowed Ali to fight, but that didn't come until later," Conrad told author Thomas Hauser for his book "Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times." "All it took was politics and money and three years of trying until we worked things out in Georgia."Quarry entered the fight as The Ring magazine's No. 1-rated heavyweight contender and the WBA's No. 3-rated heavyweight contender.Ali was guaranteed $200,000 against 42½ percent of the net income, and Quarry was guaranteed $150,000 against 22½ percent.The fight was shown on closed circuit TV in 206 locations in the United States and Canada. It was also beamed live to Asia, Australia, Europe and South America.There was a sellout crowd of 5,100 at City Auditorium.

  • We all know that Ali had a wonderful jab, but I never saw him use it more accurately or firmer than in this fight. He also looks wonderfully fit and fast, which is a great achiemenent after such a long ring absence, and as usual he shows no signs of fear or self-doubt.

    • I think if he was in this condition when he fought Frazier for the first time he would have beaten Joe the same as he did with Quarry here. This is one of Ali’s greatest ever performances.

If you're in that top position you have managers that gets paid to do that. Ain't nothing wrong with that. That's what they do. That's what they've always done and probably always will. But back to the main comment... Quarry was a top contender, probably one of many and he had to fight one of them and why not quarry?

  • I remember how utterly mesmerized I was, at age 13, by Ali and his comeback, but I was simply not familiar enough with his previous skills to realize how plain it would be to any knowledgeable observer that he is about 50% as fast as he had been when he fought in '66 or '67. Really, there is no comparison. It's like he's fighting in slow motion. It's amazing how well he did at this level of competition after 3 1/2 years off when he simply was not in shape yet; he didn't have the gas in the tank yet and his reflexes were not at all as sharp; his ring generalship was rusty. Within a year, though, he was on the road to amazing again when he found a whole new approach that worked for him.

    • What about Cleveland Williams who came from a 2 year layoff from being shot by a .357 magnum at point blank range. No one seems to mention that, to make note he lost 3/4 small intestines, a kidney & 60 lbs body weight. He came back after all those physical set backs to fight for World Heavyweight Title against Muhammad Ali on Nov. 4 1966. Then in addition they call his bout with Ali. Ali greatest bout. I cannot believe people still believe the lies and rubbish of Ali performance.

  • You have to say the comeback of Cleveland Williams who was shot with .357 magnum at point blank range was far a better comeback than Ali 3.5 year in wilderness. He lost 3/4 small intestines and 60 lbs body weight and a kidney and bullet lodging itself in his hip bone. Then 2 years later got himself back into condition and fought Muhammad Ali for world title.

    • And got soundly thrashed. Williams didn't fight Ali on his first fight back. Ali actually came back and went on to take the title again, from an invincible monster named George Foreman.

    • That’s how cinemas made money in broadcasting those major sporting events, whether it was boxing, motor racing or whatever. It was Television networks that took it over for argument of convenience & now it’s on a KZhead, argument yet again convenience. All about lower costs to zero & maximise profits.
