Dean Smith & Grace Saddle Cross Slide re-scrape

A rather battered saddle and cross slide was brought in for a rescrape - re-establishing the geometry of the dovetails and making the cross slide a pleasure rather than fight to use. All hand scraping with basic tools.

  • Nice job Mat. The freshly scraped surface looks so good compared to the worn out parts. I have the same problem on my Broadbent Schofield lathe. The cross slide and saddle dovetails are very worn out and every attempt to adjust the gib is an exercise in compromise between being locked up at the ends of travel and too loose in the middle. It is so far gone I think it would have to be machined before being scraped (the dovetails on the saddle are 38" long, requiring a lot of scraping even if they were close to good). Was it normal practice to make the dovetails parallel to the ends of the saddle when the lathes were manufactured? On my Chin Hung lathe every male dovetail is hardened and ground (cross slide and compound rest) and the female dovetails are soft and scraped to fit the male. In their sales brochure they show the saddle cross slide dovetail being ground. There is a fixture mounted on the grinder that looks like a short piece of lathe bed and the saddle sits on this while the cross slide is ground. I guess this ensures proper alignment between the bed ways and the cross slide dovetail. Using this set up the bed ways and the cross slide dovetail wouldn't necessarily have to be aligned with end of the saddle wings. Maybe the technique is different when you're grinding versus when you're scraping? Thanks, Ken

    @hmw-ms3tx@hmw-ms3tx3 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Ken, I would think that each manufacturer had there own jigs for setting up parts for final grinding to ensure alignment - as you can guess its more long winded measuring and adjusting. Broadbent Schofield made some quality lathes and if Im not mistaken made lathes to be re badged for a number of other high profile lathe 'makers' beds at least. 38" long cross slide - yes that would take some scraping - but its not out of the question. Its like a 6ft SE . The first thing would be to determine the degree of wear - from that you can determine if its heavy roughing scrape or machining job. If it were mine it would be scraped - as its too long for any of my machines. besides the wear is unlikley to be more than 0.020" and that is soon bashed off 'as Chris would say. Youd want a few beers afterward mind :-)

  • All of the mag bases like your red one shown here have a common weakness. Down the center line is aluminium and the post can never be truly tightened. A good fix is to make a plate to cover the entire area of the base top face. Level off the top face and screw the plate down in each corner with a new center hole for the post. You will be amazed at how much more rigid the upright post is after the mod. The only catch for young players is the plate must be non magnetic (don't ask how I know) so stainless or brass/bronze is the best choice.

    @robbvk6es@robbvk6es3 жыл бұрын
    • thanks Rob, I shall have a look into that - I have been wondering about making a base making use of the fancy neo' magnets. Still in the thought stage of projects that one !

      @lookcreations@lookcreations3 жыл бұрын
    • @@lookcreations You can make the eclipse/mercer style push-push bases work with washer shaped neo magnets, i've done it, but the rotary switch bases require the magnetic poles to be diametrically opposed rather than the usual axial polarisation. Every neo cylindrical magnet I have investigated is axially polarised, so not useful and then there is the problem of getting a close fit into the iron base.

      @robbvk6es@robbvk6es3 жыл бұрын
    • @@robbvk6es I was thinking of starting from scratch and designing the mag' to pull up internally to release - cam & lever type arrangement. Held in a non magnetic housing so it doesnt get the chips sticking to it. As I say, its not had much thought yet. Might be a nice project down the line.

    • I was asked by a chap if I would sort out his DSG cross slide out (instagram contact) - I said I was happy to take a lok and do what I could. It worked out well for both of us. Its going to be a far more useful machine tool now it has cross slide travel ! When I look back at the very first scraping I did on the Shaper - it still looks good compared to my what I am dooing today, different but its doing its job and very little sign of wear. Mind It gets oiled each time its used.

  • Nice work as always. What is your method of honing the scraper blade, and how often do you do it? I found I was honing mine every couple passes on tiny ways. Do you rehoning during passes on those big surfaces?

    @RotarySMP@RotarySMP3 жыл бұрын
    • Good question. Well I use a diamond lapping plate on a slow grinder - after watching Robin Renzetti use one I made a very cheep copy - there is a video of it on my channel if you take a look back through. It is fitted with a #600 grit wheel and as such takes very little off of the carbide each time. Little and often is the key. I like a sharp edge so less force is required to take a cut and therefore I can retain more control over the edge direction etc. When I re-scraped the lathe bed (see the video in the Holbrook playlist), the roughing passes were deep and quick - sharpenning maybe every three passes over the 6ft length. As the face developed and more cuts were taken (smaller) I eventually got to put a fresh edge on each pass. Another thing to think about, 20mm wide scraper has less cutting edge than a 30mm wide scraper for a reason. So a larger / wider blade should enable you to find a sharp edge on the curve for longer. Straight push scraping is hard on the edges, so you have to learn to work around the scraper edge. I get more control with the curl cut I use and so its less force and the edge holds up longer. The last thing to concider - Cast Iron comes in many mixes, the gib cut from the old wood lathe bed was like butter, the saddle casting was much harder. My Holbrook lathe bed harder again. Sharpen the edge when you feel its losing its edge. I am filming a scraping video today for a small SE - I will try and cover this in the filming. All the best Mat

  • While I admire your work and think it's of excellent quality the idea that using any original surface as a true reference is not wise. As a drafter designer I can assure you that the machining tolerances on that machine were never tighter than +- .002. It would have been cost prohibitive to call for anything tighter than that and would never ever been called out. Good luck with your efforts and for your own piece of mind it will be far better than it ever was when produced! Your lathe will be super accurate compared to original!

    @matthewmoilanen787@matthewmoilanen7872 ай бұрын
    • The original machined surface is a starting point. Not having the bed and spindle to use required I use something original to get things going. If you take a look through the Holbrook rebuild, you can see a far better approach when the complete lathe is available to work from. This cross slide was badly worn to the point it wasn’t effective to use.
