  • Fun fact: ChapStick is a brand. Lip balm is the product. This is one of the best examples of brands that become generic trademarks. A person might say "I used some Chapstick today" but the brand of lip balm they used is actually Burt's Bees or something else. Kleenex, Vaseline, and Xerox are other examples of brands that get used as generic trademarks! OK, back to the dermatology lesson..

  • The double moisturising is such a great advice. I’ve suffered from dry lips pretty much all my life till the last month. I would constantly apply lip balm day in day out, and still my lips would get so damn dry. I though it is the toothpaste or the lip balm or other stuff, tried so many different brands of lip balms and still the Same result. I would finish a whole lip balm tube in less than a month, my dad joked if I eat it lol. But recently I started applying burt’s bees honey lip balm and then applying a layer of Vaseline on top every night and just like that my dry lips problem was solved! There are still such misconceptions about Vaseline being harmful since it’s derived from crude oil and blah blah that we fail to see how it is actually such a useful ingredient. Also the point about the lips having no barrier was really cool to know, wasn’t aware of that. Anyway sorry for such a long comment!

I have BARELY made a dent in it and my lips have been soft and supple since! 10/10 recommended. Also if you like diy chapstick/lip balm. It's a little soft for that but it's good for it!!! • I just started watching videos about skin care and yours are awesome, funny, informative, and well thought out. I really appreciate the time both of you take to make them. Right now it has even fixed a problem I have been having which is my irritation and dryness around the mouth even though I am always wearing my favorite lip balm. I have to constantly use a lip balm as I'm a lip licker and using a lip balm makes me stop the habit. I have been using this lip balm for several years so I didn't understand why I have been getting irritation around my mouth, even though I was using it more often which I guess made the problem even worse. When I saw the video I right away used another lip balm as I have different ones in my drawer as other people have gifted them to me and don't use, but instead I always reach for my favorite one. Within 30 minutes of using a different lip balm the irritation calmed down as well as the dryness around my mouth. I never thought my body would have issues with something that I have been fine with for several years but this video taught me differently. Thank you and sorry for the long comment. 😅

  • I use nipple cream (lansinoh lanolin) on my lips after discovering how versatile it is after breast feeding my eldest. I used to always have dry chapped lips and years of chronic sinus infections meaning I breathe out my mouth which is really drying left my lips suffering! One day reading the back of the type I bunged some on and never looked back! When my aunt was in hospice care she was left with really sore lips and I would apply some for her even when she couldn’t talk any more she made relieved noises when I would apply it and all the nurses asked what I used too. It’s obvs an issue with certain allergies like everything (my friend with severe nut allergies can only;use lanolin too) but if you’re not allergic it’s amazing! Would love you to do a skincare video for those with nut and nut oil allergies!

  • I love their editor! Makes their videos not just informative, but fun! On lip care... Vaseline has an actual [pink] lip vaseline, tiny little tub that works fantastic. I've used it for a few years now. Not perfrect but the most complete I've found to date. I don't need to be constantly reapplying, and leaves the lips super soft and soothed when cracked. I've also used the Laneige mask for a few years, few times a week. When I'm using the vaseline lip care, I don't use this much, but when I don't have it, I def need to rely on the lip mask to not have my lips cracking completely. It does feel sticky if too much is added. Will definitely need to try double moisturizing.

  • I remember last winter I really struggled with this, because I just wanted to be outside in the snow all day, I don't regret that. But afterwards I struggled with dry lips for half a year. I tried a lot of different balms, but in the end the thing that worked for me was aloe Vera. not a balm with aloe Vera, but just the raw gel. You don't have that instant feeling like your lips are better like with Chapstick, but it did really help and I could see some difference after a week.

  • Dr. Dray also makes an excellent point about lip care. She uses lotion on her lips before applying any 'sealant' like chapstick-esque products. I started doing that, too, and I definitely prefer the results from it. I like to apply a small layer of lotion (CeraVe) to my lips, let it sit for about 1 minute to absorb, and then apply the chapstick once the lotion has stopped being slick (so the chapstick can actually be applied instead of just smearing lotion around.) My lips almost never peel and when they do it's usually my fault for licking my lips, dry mouth, not reapplying chapstick, etc.

  • Every winter, I used to struggle with cracks at the side of my lips. Dr. Dray said in one video that it could be due to beeswax. I've since eliminated beeswax balms and, voila, no problems. I wish Vaseline sold the small squeeze lip tubes here in Canada like they do in the USA (we get little pots, which require application with fingers, ewww).

    • You might not be missing out as much as you think. I’m in the us, and I find the “plain” squeezy-tube vaseline to taste a bit bitter and not as effective for lip care, unlike the “plain” kind that comes in the little pot. It seems like maybe they’re processed differently or something. It’s a bummer.

    • Yeah, I realized a few years ago that when my lips were starting to get dry, and I was unconsciously licking my lips, if I licked them then immediately put on lip balm it would be a lot more comfortable. • @@metropolotankreyole I was a chronic lip licker as a kid, I don't know that I'd recommend forcing this treatment on a child, but I can say outside of the traumatic circumstances, it did work, both to heal my extremely damaged face (I looked like a clown) and break the habit. For context, I was traumatically abused as a child, and my lip-licking was a behaviour I developed as a result of that, so it was intensely chronic. I was taken to a Doctor because it was so bad and my face was red raw a good centimetre around the entire perimeter of my lips and most of the way down my chin (I have a charming school photo depicting this sorry mess) and my skin was cracked and peeling all around my mouth. In the UK we have this cream called germoline, which is like antiseptic for wound healing but also mildly analgesic(numbing). It tastes vile and it smells faintly of dettol (in a manner I personally find comforting, but my partner hates). Anyways, I had this cream applied to my poor lips and lower face at least three times a day for what felt like months, but I imagine was maybe a month, maybe two. Whilst it worked it's magic healing my face and actually providing numbing relief so I was feeling less compelled to lick or touch it, it also tasted fucking terrible and anytime I licked I was sharply rewarded with the nasty bitter taste, which helped to eventually break the habit. Another brand we have is savlon, which is almost the same product, but with no numbing agents and a little less thick than germoline, but it does also not taste very nice and should yield similar if slightly less effective results. If you can't get either wherever you are from, I am fairly confident your local pharmacy will have a cream that has the same properties under a different brand. I will also add, that because the root of my problematic behaviour wasn't addressed, while I did stop lip licking, I suspect this is around the time I started to grind my teeth - a habit I still do when stressed to this day and have ruined my molars doing (before liplicking, I had been biting myself, circa aged 5, something I have no memory of, but is documented in my children's services file. Each time, only the behaviour was addressed, so I simply adapted and found a new outlet/coping mechanism). All this to say: If lip licking is a serious compulsion, treat that, but also consider seeking some therapy to address the root cause, so you don't just subconsciously find a new maladaptive coping mechanism (and also you deserve to have the tools to develop healthy coping mechanisms and outlets and to work through and/or let go of whatever it is that's living in your brain without paying you rent). :)

I am sensitive to many lip moisturizers. I recently had lip blush tattooing and was given a special ointment to use while healing. I didn't realize at first, but I was reacting to the product. It contained pitchouli oil, which seems like an odd addition for a product meant to be used following lip tattoing. Definitely need to watch the ingredients!
