The 9-A-7660 (or Kh-47M2, NATO reporting name Killjoy) better known under the name "Kinzhal", is a Russian hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile system.
The system includes the modified supersonic MiG-31K carrier aircraft and the 9-C-7760 missile, created on the basis of the Iskander (NATO: Stone) mobile short-range ballistic missile system.
According to various sources, the missile after launch is capable of accelerating to speeds of more than M10 (10 speeds of sound). This allows it to be classified as hypersonic, automatically making the Kinzhal the world's first mass-produced hypersonic weapon.
In this video, we will study the origins of this system, get acquainted with its features and try to figure out whether it is really hypersonic.

  • It's not a "true" hypersonic in the sense that it incorporrates evasive maneuvers and scramjet technology, but being a very fast missile traveling 3500 m/s makes it extremely difficult to intercept with most Air Defense systems. • I'm sure the definition of what properties a missile must have to be a hypersonic missile will change over time, but the most important features are: Does it work ? Can it defeat air deference systems ? Can it destroy the target ? I suspect that these missile attacks will have to be coordinated with other types of missiles and dummy missiles in order to overwhelm an air defense system. Given how high value these AD systems are, the cost of launching 30 missiles to destroy the system is still probably worth it. ( especially if the AD area remains unprotected for several days )

  • If the Kinzhal is not Hypersonic because it can't maneuver at hypersonic, then the F-35 is not 5th gen because it can't supercruise. There are over 100 MiG-31in storage, Russia operated 100ish upgraded (BM model) interceptors, the K modification is executed on stored cells, not withdrawn from active duty interceptor fleet. The Hypersonic speeds achieve 2 goals: - Indetectable to current Radar tech. - Reduces reaction time: let's say it has a range of 1000km in quasi ballistic trajectory so most of the flight the missile is guided by Inertial guidance (which we know can already be very accurate, for most area targets). in terminal phase (50km) it slows down to high supersonic speeds on a high altitude flight (25-30km) to get optical terrain matching and Sat guidance (at mach 4 that's 20-30 seconds for trajectory correction), and then still dive down on the target at a Mach 5+ speed. it greatly reduces Air Defence reaction time, Radar lock will be lost once again and the maneuvers will be able to avoid any missile launched in the 20-30 seconds "slow" flight phase.

The evidence that it hit and destroyed the patriot system in Kiev suggests that so far there is no defense against it. The Mig31 is the aircraft being used in pairs to destroy Ukraine aircraft without even entering Ukraine airspace with the first firing the missiles from high altitude and the second guiding it to the target since Mig-31s can share targeting data and control of missiles though they can also be controlled by the Dome radar system.

Regardless, the MIG-31 fired a rocket or not, or it has a training flight. From the moment of takeoff to the arrival of the rocket, it takes 1-2 hours, depending on which part of Ukraine he fired at (these planes are on distant airfields so that nothing accidentally arrives at them - and they are constantly monitored from Ukraine) When the MiG-31 takes off, a set of measures takes place from air forces and air defense forces, for example, the transfer of aircraft to alternate airfields, including "airfields on the roads," I will not tell everything to the detriment of my country. So you can be calm. Actually, the name "Kinzhal " means "Dagger", i.e. this weapon was created namely for special military operations. The Kinzhal will probably never be used as a part of multiple rocket launcher or as a doomsday rocket (the Russians have another weapons for that). Allegedly the Kinzhal was applyed at the Kyiv airport to destroy a Patriot battery ~ a month ago. • It was fired at a Patriot battery but no Patriot systems were lost and sattellite images show that it simply missed by several hundred meters. Kinzhal simply isn't an effective long range weapon in the Russian arsenal because of the lack of intelligence as well as its poor accuracy and the need to launch it at extreme ranges to preserve the precious few launch platforms Russia has, which negates the advantage of speed by giving an enemy plenty of warning time. The fact that it can only be launched by Mig-31s basically means that whenever a Mig-31 is spotted you can just safely assume it's about to launch one since the plane is essentially obsolete in all other roles. This is why Russia has mainly been relying on Shahed-131 drones in order to try to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses, though the issue of intelligence still persists.

Strikes by Russian long- and short-range drones, cruise and ballistic missiles of the Kinzhal type, MLRS and glide bombs have long become part of the life of Ukrainians from Kharkov to Lvov. Moreover, the citizens of Ukraine themselves are not to blame for this; - Soviet systems were sold out before the war or lost during the last 2 years of open conflict with Russia, and foreign supplies are completely insufficient and do not include truly modern types of weapons. Patriot, by the way, is not one of them. This system discredited itself in 2019 and then in 2022 during missile attacks on Saudi Aramco. Yet, recently it showed himself well when a transport plane carrying Ukrainian soldiers returning from captivity was shot down in the sky over Belgorod. Here, the Patriot worked flawlessly. ((

  • I don’t know what to think about this rocket, because I don’t know anything about it. I can only judge by the video from Ukraine. The Ukrainians filmed the flight of the Kinzhal. I had a question, how do they know that this missile is a Kinzhal? Watching the video removed all the questions. The rocket flew at a foreseeable height, appeared from behind the right horizon and disappeared behind the left horizon in a matter of seconds. It was impressive speed. The rocket itself looked like an oblong ball of light. It became curious what speed it is, at least approximately. I watched various videos with other Russian missiles flying over Ukraine. The speed of the Kinzhal surpassed dozens of times. After the video of the Kinzhal flying, other missiles seemed to fly at the speed of a moving car. They also say that the Patriot in Kyiv was destroyed by the Kinzhal. I don’t know if it was Kinzhal, but I think that any other Patriot missile would have been shot down. Here, the Patriot fired 32 missiles towards the Kinzhal flying towards them, and as a result, Kyiv lost one Patriot system. Be that as it may, the Kinzhal is an effective weapon and, as far as I understand, it is very variable.

    • Sinking a carrier would require first finding it and that is difficult when Russia lacks any real reconnisance and intelligence assets. The most up to date information Russia would have is by spy satellite but they only have enough spy satellites to get images of an area every two days on average and carriers can obviously move very far in two days and are some of the fastest ships out there. This is further complicated by the fact that the US has several options for shooting down LEO satellites, so in all likelyhood in a war scenario the US would just shoot down any satellite before it passed over a carrier group. Then there's also the issue of launching the missile, the downside of it being air launched is that the platform can easily be shot down and these Mig-31s would effectively be blind sitting ducks since they have no radar, of course they'd have escorts but there are no Russian aircraft that stand a chance in an engagement with F-35s.

In the West, old stuff is actively destroyed or sold off to third world countries, just to get rid off it and buy new toys, a proven strategy of the MIC in Washington.

      @maninhat77@maninhat77 Жыл бұрын
    • No they can't. Physics is not magical. Hypersonic missiles have to resist enormous pressures, friction and heat that would melt steel. So a laser would be meaningless for them, the atmospheric friction is hotter than what a laser could make and the material on the missile outer surface just shrugs it off. Lasers need time to focus their beam enough to heat the target. Which this type of missiles deny as you have a few seconds to react. Worse, lasers need a complex and precise targeting system, both in software and mechanization. They have to be millimetric to aim the beam right in same spot. Which is extremely difficult when the target just appears out of nowhere and moves so fast. Lasers are are useless in cloudy or foggy days. The water vapor absorbs and scatters the beam energy. Lasers do work for mortars artillery, rockets and slower missiles because they are made of mild or pour steel, aluminum, and plastics. They are small and have thin not heat resistant surfaces. So powerful enough laser can detonate in flight ammunition (which is subsonic) in microseconds or burn a steady flying cruise missile by having enough time to sim at it and keep the last beam in the same spot for several seconds. You can't do this with Mach 5 or higher projectiles. And lasers are very limited in sustainable fire. They needs absurd amounts of energy so most power lases need s giant bank of quick dense capacitors that have to be previously charged or use chemical charges to create it. So they are limited to a few shots before you have to reload the charges or charge the capacitors. The more hard and fastest the target, the more power the laser needs, the least firing time you have. Smaller lases to burn thin slower targets can be sustained by very powerful turbine electric generators or nuclear reactors, hence why you will see them in big ships in the near future or for land defense sound cities. But they won't be powerful enough to stop rail guns tungsten projectiles nor ablative heat resistant hypersonic missiles materials. The only way for s laser to do that, is to be a nuclear detonation laser gun. Cool 1980s concepts in which a small nuclear bomb powers a laser cannon in which the energy of the blast is directed in one direction, concentration gamma, UV, X-ray and infrared radiation into a beam. That can instantly destroy anything that isn't several meters thick, but is a one shot gun. Otherwise you are left with kinetic interceptors. The only realistic way to stop hypersonic missilesz you need a very fast detection track and fire solution, automation, flawless software and an hypersonic rocket engine capable of taking the missile st mach 5 in 3 seconds. But you only get one chance to do it, if you miss, the target instantly hits whatever it aimed. And they complicate things because not only you have a very short window engagement, they also can maneuver. So if you launch and they slightly move in a minor way, they already ruined your interception solution. There is no mid course correction, it happens so fast that you are literally shooting a bullet with another bullet, you fire at were it will be and you have to physically hit it with a kinetic solid payload. If they move the least, at such speeds the target deviates dozens or hundreds of meters away in milliseconds and your interceptor just flies past away.

  • Ok, but according to what you said there will never be a "real" hypersonic missile as you intend by the term that the missile flies at >Mach 8-9 until the target... because of the plasma cloud rendering it "blind" I don't understand your reasoning, if Kh-47M2 flies hypersonic (>Mach 10) and slows down to turn on aiming devices in the final stage towards the target it's simply the only way a hypersonic missile can work based on what you said yourself

  • IMHO the Kinzhal is a modern advance version of Iskander missile, but as some says its not a true hypersonic in its nature is still in hypersonic in a sense that it's difficult to intercept because at a high speed of beyond mach 6 in its atmospheric trajectory path long range radar can't locate it.... The tip of the missile is being envelope by plasma field, when its nearing to its target it'll slow abit down but still near to mach 5 when descending and the enemy radars will be still having hard time to calculate its trajectory of target.... The radar or enemy cant only know it if it hits it's target and see the destruction.... US already admitted its hard to intercept and the Kinzhal hypersonic ghost of Kyiv by Klitschko is just a propaganda so the Ukrainian force would not loose hope to holding up themselves fighting for Ukraine (≧▽≦)

  • ic, skyships took a look at the rocket, recognized the iskanker shape, and lazily concluded it must be same old plus mig31-launching, i.e., an iskanker with correspondingly altered+extended trajectory. Lazy as skyships is, he did not even do the little google research needed to find the published research on how to i/o to the interior of plasma-shrouded hypersonic bodies and arrogantly concluded that such i/o is not possible, missing out on the most likely scenario which sees kinzhal being blind but with trajectory randomly altered and then brought back on target by external guidance that geolocates the rocket in real time based on its radio and IR emissions, a scenario which would allow kinzhal to hit with full 12-mach kinetic energy and only requires a materials-science breakthrough to give it protracted resistance to friction heat.

Of course this is making the wrong assumption that this missile impacts at mach 5, which it would only be capable of in the ballistic flight mode when performing no maneuvers. In reality it'll probably impact at most at super sonic speeds.
