It's been over five years since the Z cameras arrived. Since then, Nikon has released 45 lenses for the system. What are the gaps in Nikon's Z-mount mirrorless lens lineup? Let's compare notes.

    • My guess is shit/tilt lenses should appear, the 35 that we know is coming, and after Sony did so well with it a native 300mm. If I could have my dreams materialize they would release a compelling unique lens, something that inspires people to buy Nikon for it like Canon's 24-70 f2.0. One possibility will be a 200mm f1.8 TC light or a 300mm f4.0 pf. The 24-70mm f2.0 will be a great addition. A 24-85mm f2.0 will be even better. All of that is wishful thinking, except the 35mm

  • I would also love a 70-200 f4 lens. Small and lightweight. I have the F mount version but focussing is not reliable on a Z camera. It works flawlessly on my D850. The 100-400 is appealing but it is larger and heavier. I have never missed focal lengths above 200 / 280 mm so I would prefer a 70-200 f4. Coupled with a 1.4 TC this gets me too 280mm. As for DX cameras, if I were Nikon I wouldn't invest too much into that. The Z9 Z8 and even Z7II can be switched to DX with very good resolution if required. The Z9 and Z8 are perfect for sports and wildlife in DX mode. At some point the Z50 will need an update though. I own a Z50 and love that little camera. Some call it entry level but I don't agree with that. It is a very cable little camera.

  • Thanks for the video. I am hoping for a Z 16-34mm f2.8. Nikon was granted a certificate of patent for such a lens back in February 2023, so it is a real possibility. This would be a great lens for landscape and travel. It would take smaller, and more affordable, filters than the 14-24mm f2.8, and thus make it easier to create a group of filters that work across one's lens collection. Canon and Sony both introduced a similar lens early on in their mirrorless lineup. Sony has even had time to release a version two of their 16-35 offering.

    • YESS, this is the lens we need! They still sell the 17-35mm f/2.8 since 1999!! It's my most used lens next to the 85mm.

    • I have 14-24mm f2.8, amazing glass BUT a filter/hood is ridiculously large making it very impractical to carry in a belt-pouch and a pain when you have to switch lenses. Also its a bit to short for me. If they come up with a 16-35mm f2.8 with a filter that can be attached directly to the lens (not on the hood) - I'd go for it.

  • I'd like to see a z mount Nikon branded 70-300 with IS. Although the Tamron isn't terrible the lack of IS and close focusing field curvature issue is a deal breaker for me. It would be useful for landscapes when you want a bit more reach than 200 but don't want lug around a 100-400.

  • Nice review Ray. Thanks for the walk through the Z-line lenses. I remember not too long ago where Nikon was being poked at for not having enough Z-mount glass, which being an early Z adopter, I never really felt constrained with. Those times are well past and now we've a huge field of choices to select from, not even considering all the third party lenses coming to market recently. How times have changed. The wish list - I'm holding out for the 35mm 1.2 so I can complete my 1.2 set, and I would as well, like a tilt shift option at some point but that isn't critical at all to me at this point.

  • Great topic Ray. Thanks for reminding me how much I have spent on Z lenses over the last 5 years. I agree with you on some special lenses for the ZF. For me the 40 f2 lives on my ZF most days. I love my 400 4.5 and like you have the two teleconverters. I have been recently tempted by the 600 6.3 though. Not sure how much advantage it is over the 400 with a teleconverter. But there is one lens that has converted me from the 85 F mount days. Have always been an 85 guy until I picked up the Plena. Oh my goodness that lens puts a smile on my face everytime I shoot with it and load up the files. Cheers Ray. I hope spring is in full bloom on the island.

  • Ray, as ever, a great thought provoking video! One lens that I would love to have, for those times when I’ve really got to pack light, is a Z mount version of the great NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4. I used to own one as an interim lens before the Z mount f/2.8 version appeared and the quality was outstanding. My only concern about buying an f/4 version would be the inevitable indecision over which version to pack! Tossing up the pros and cons of a lightweight f/4 over a (relatively) heavyweight f/2.8 and the merits of having both in my arsenal for those infrequent times might prove to be too expensive to bother with! Oh, the indecision 😖

    • @@MrSimonj1970 hi, only only used the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4 on my Nikon Z6 bodies with the FTZ before I bought the Z9 and the new NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8S and found that both the quality of the images and the focussing speed were brilliant! In many ways I regret selling it to fund my 2.8 Z version as it’s certainly much lighter and easier to carry. With the quality of the FX sensors on the Z bodies losing a stop of light is not such a big deal as it might have been with the D3/D4/D5 bodies and I’m kind of tempted to buy another one, so impressed was I by it.

  • Thanks Ray, always appreciate your humble style of presenting such topics. I would love to see Nikon doing more for the travellers. The 100-400mm is great but too heavy for my taste. I would love to see a Z mount version of the 70-300mm from Nikon. I know Tamron makes one but I am a Nikon only guy :) The 28-400mm in a optically slightly better 120-400mm version would be a perfect compagnon to the 24-120mm. Maybe with 6.3 at the long end...

I sort of regret not simply going with the 400 4.5 because of the sharpness but the 100-400 is rather good. Next purchase would be a z6iii if it ever comes along with an 85 1.2 unless a 200 1.8 with something like the plena would come out. I do like the quality of the 85 1.2.

  • I love my Z collection so far with the 14-30mm f4 S, 105mm f2.8 S Macro, 40mm f2 Classic and my most used 24-120mm f4 S with the Nikon ZF. To focus on portraiture, I'm so tempted to get the 85mm f1.8 as I loved my AF-S 85mm F1.8 I owned back in the 1990's. However, I'm new to digital photography. So glad I've entered digital photography with a mirrorless camera like the ZF. Reminds me of my beloved FE and F3HP days :)

On my Z wish list: I want a proper Z mount F5.6 or F4 500 to replace my aging F4G 500. I already had it when the 500PF came out. I would love a 500 telephoto with the advantages that IBIS plus internal image stabilisation in the lens. I enjoy the way the 180-600 works but want a prime option at 500. Re the Plena. If they’re smart, an equivalent of the excellent lightweight Panasonic 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 would go down a storm. Also yeah the 40mm f/2 is really rather good - I ended up selling my 35mm f/1.8 S because it wasn’t so much better that it warranted keeping both 😅

  • So, my passion was for the 200mm f/2 F-Mount lens, which I was fortunate enough to get a copy back in 2018, thus I've always wanted to see a Z-Mount version of this lens. However, I did purchase a copy of the Plena a few weeks ago and notice I can achieve similar or better than the 200mm f/2 by switching to DX which converts the Plena to 202mm with arguably similar aperture to f/2. Bit of a Win Win if you ask me.

  • As always, the subject of photography is one to philosophize about. And as with other products, there is the lower class, the middle class and the high-end range. I use the mirror less Z system from Nikon, also for my Zeiss lenses. The Zeiss Otus in particular exudes the charm of medium format. Nikon's great efforts to bring many Z lenses onto the market is no coincidence. The third-party manufacturer Sigma now also builds many high-quality lenses, but they are generally not intended for the Z mount. In this respect, Nikon always has to keep up. Basically, there are no bad lenses at all anymore. The differences are sometimes very small. It is always very individual which lenses the photographer should buy and which not. Everyone can only answer that for themselves. In order to gain cinematic impressions, you generally cannot work with the 35mm format. Zeiss put a lot of work into releasing the Zeiss Otus series in 2013. The aim here was to bring the cinematic medium format character to life, especially for filming, which is otherwise not possible with small image format. Since I own such a lens, I can only confirm this. Then the Nikon 85 mm 1.2 lenses are of no use.

I appreciate the wedding photographers need a 35/1.2 so they can blow out the plantation behind the bride's mom and I respect that that needs to happen, but there is no compact 35 at all which sucks. I don't think these lenses need to be S lenses, but tbh if Nikon wanted to start offering some very short and relatively light lenses that pack some real punch and weather sealing, they can charge me close to whatever they want. 35mm f2.0 S that is small but can survive a hurricane and has the IQ to match? @spiritofumai@spiritofumaiАй бұрын
  • In my opinion they need good, smaller and affordable 35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4 lenses. Or they should open their Z mount and let Tamron and Sigma do it for them.

    @stefan_becker@stefan_beckerАй бұрын
    • I think the excellent f1.8 S series does that job - you loose 2/3 of a stop but get lower cost. Still, a 35/58/85mm f1.4 with an aperture ring could do well, about US$1500 a piece. There are lots of 3rd party options, Meike has an AF 85mm 1.4. Certainly there will be even more options, doesn't seem that the Z mount is 'closed' as claimed by some. There's even the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 in direct competition with the Nikon version.

      @marcusbraun8889@marcusbraun8889Ай бұрын
    • @@marcusbraun8889 The issue is that the f1.8S series is mediocre and overpriced at best. Slower aperture and/or much higher prices than for example the Sony 35mm f1.8. I'd love to see a great Nikon 35mm and 50mm f1.4 at a price of no more than $1000. Many lenses of that kind are available for Sony. So it can be done.

  • Nikon has no cheap mid-telezoom like a 70-300. Though I'd rather have a slightly cheaper/lighter 100-400 (or 80-400). Probably not going to happen though. Maybe Tamron will release their 50-400 in Z-mount though. Not sure if we'll see a 70-200 f/4. Don't see much of a point considering the 70-180.

    • @@robert_may- maybe those 70-200 f4 don't sell all that well? I wouldn't get one, prefer more reach and wait for a successor of the AF-P 70-300E (A Z 70-350mm f4.5-6.3 VR just under US$1000 would be fantastic). If I limit myself to around 200mm I would rather get the 70-180mm f2.8 over a 70-200 f4...

      @robert_may@robert_mayАй бұрын
    • @@marcusbraun8889 I'm not sure really. I've always really liked the f/4 70-200 lenses - they tend to be sharper than the f/2.8s, as well as being lighter and cheaper. They're usually optically better than the 70-300 lenses too. The Canon EF 70-200 f/4L and the IS variant were super popular and well-regarded lenses. Really good optics for not a lot of money.

  • I would love Nikon to make a ultra long Z mount zoom lens with a range of say 400mm - 1.200mm f4-5.6 zoom lens so that when used in conjunction with a apc camera body eg, the new z30, it would become a 600mm-1,800mm f4-5.6 zoom lens. Do you think such a lens would one day become a reality?

    @brianchu-a-kong1414@brianchu-a-kong141414 күн бұрын
    • I can only speculate. Personally, I doubt such a lens would be feasible. Not so much from a technical standpoint but would it have a big enough "audience?"

      @RaymondParkerPhoto@RaymondParkerPhoto14 күн бұрын
  • It is pretty simple what Nikon should release...First 105mm f1.4 that is the quintessential Nikon lens, I can't believe they went for 135 over 105....and then 35,50 and 85mm f1.4 lenses. I don't want focus breathing corrections or anything fancy just make it bit smaller and lighter like Sony. These are the professional photographer lenses, Nikon for some reason have put pros to the back of the queue. This is why lot of them going to Canon.. Canon 28-70 f2 is elite tier, if Nikon can come up with something similar that would be great. And after those lenses. Go to their warehouse, wipe the dust off of their old Ai, Ai-s, D lenses, remove the glass put them in an old Nikkor looking lens barrel and put an AF motor in it, don't worry about sharpness, Coma, nothing... name them classic line and people who would love ZF will buy it...They would enjoy some character lenses over clinical lenses. And once they do all of that Pickup the phone call Kodak and ask them to make some Kodak film simulations for ZF camera...give us an accurate Kodachrome simiulations. Finally Nikon execs can swim in a bathtub full of money!

  • Because I'm a manual shooter mainly, there is just no lenses for the ZF.. a retro camera with no manual or "hybrid" lenses, such as the Fuji 23, 16 and 14mm with there clutches, or the aperture and focus controls, is not relevant for me... So, in my opinion they made only half of the job unfortunately.
