A tsundere delinquent voiced by Rock Howard is the best idea ever.
After My Home Hero, now The Fable. What a let down for still using Osamu Tezuka name.
I through the video, he didn’t mention Reincarnated as the Seventh Prince? That’s one of the gems of spring! It’s getting some haters because the character design is admittedly weird. But the show is good! It’s got amazing animation for what is basically a new studio (they only did one other thing which was a short thing)
Is it just me, or has Truck-Kun gotten lazy lately?

This kind of video is why I love following the same reviewers over a long period of time. I know the differences between Geoff's tastes and mine. He likes cute girls doing cute things more than I do, and he's infinitely more receptive to sports anime, but conversely, we often share the same opinions on action shows or outright ecchi ones. You can't get that kind of familiarity by reading random review articles from people you've never heard of on sites where columnists are laid off and replaced every other month.
Honestly, same. Reviews of media really mean nothing as an aggregated blob, you end up getting the most out of finding a few reviewers who are good at explaining the strengths and weaknesses of the things they review over anything else (except maybe personality). Find a few cool people who have similar tastes to yours (or who have opposite tastes but are amenable) and use their explanations as a way to gauge for yourself. Geoff likes a lot more Harem and Slice of Life than I do, as well as having a higher tolerance for Anime Bullshit™, but overall he's good at explaining why he does or doesn't like the things he does, and that makes it easy to figure out how much I'll like something even when it doesn't line up with his tastes. On top of that, where our tastes *do* line up, he's introduced me to some of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen, that I might've missed out on otherwise.
That’s why I valued old school movie reviewers.
you're describing the same reason I religiously watch Yahtzee game reviews
Not me IMMEDIATELY directing my mouse cursor over the timeline to skip the baseball anime only for Geoff to read me for filth for it.
sports anime don’t do it for me. only one i like is birdie wing - thanks Geoff…

As an Omegaverse fan, the fact that it not only escaped the containment zone of AO3 but now has full-blown anime productions does make my soul leave my body a little bit.
Containment breach really is the only thing you can call this
And it's not even good Omegaverse! It's Omegaverse written by someone who only has a vague idea of what Omegaverse is. But it's a super cute domestic slice of life
@@Siseja if it's a good anime leaning on omegaverse that counts as good omegaverse to me tbh. It's not exactly hammered in stone rules there. Just whatever people agreed on

when I was in high school, my school had a rule that any club had to have cultural or academic merit in order to justify being school sanctioned, as did other schools in the area. my school and our rival school both justified the existence of anime club by showing episodes of spice and wolf to prove to our respective committees that anime had academic merit- SO excited for another generation to do the same BUT BETTER

@zebrother oh no, that anime sucks? I was really enjoying the light novels and looking forward to watching it...
The first episode of Jellyfish Can't Swim in The Night actually made me cry. It just cuts so deep for me as an artist.
Go Go Loser Ranger (or Ranger Reject as us pesky manga readers prefer to call it) is definitely going to be one of the highlights of the season. I highly recommend it to anyone wondering what to pick up from the season. I hope it gets some traction for sure.
I see, you're one of us. (Still prefer the fantranslated title of the series over go go loser ranger) Hisui best girl btw.

Girls Band Cry is getting criminally overlooked because every English streaming service forgot to license it, but it's *really* good. The characters feel real and fleshed out after two episodes in a way that most anime don't succeed at with twelve, without falling back on anime-trope personality templates or just telling the audience what kind of person they are. The way the story's staying on a very small personal scale while still pulling big emotional moments without needing crazy-high anime stakes or situations is really impressive; the main plot throughline of the fairly emo second episode was the MC needing to install a light fixture for her appartment.
Yeah it definitely should be a crime to force me to make a crime watching it illegally. This show had it already hard since it's 3D and as someone on the internet said, "most anime fans prefer bad 2D rather than a good 3D" and on top of that nobody licensed it in this side of the lake, it's such a shame.
No wonder the writing is good because it's the same script writer of A Place Further Than The Universe. Both this and Jellyfish is fighting for my favorite anime of all time haha
I just watched the second episode and this is going to be a contender for best of the season easily. It is criminal that it isn't licensed, someone get on that. I watched it because I was noticing recently how good Juuki Hanada is at scripts, and this is delivering so hard
I can't believe none of the English services picked it up. I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I love the protag. She's somehow timid and absolutely feral at the same time.
I just don't watch band anime, But I'll consider
Girls Band Cry really deserves to be picked up officially, glad you touch on it - though I feel it deserves way more than just 'bargain bin' status! Both the animation and tone are top notch with some killer directing, impeccable comedic timing, and super fresh vibe throughout its first two episodes so far. It should not be missed!
I assume it's only in the bargain bin because of the fact that its not available anywhere officially.
Mission: Yozakura Family is so so so good. I highly recommend it to anyone, manga or anime, because the voice acting and soundtrack is so good and there are great animated cuts.
"Wdym you haven't watched critically acclaimed Xmen 97 on Disney + yet!" This season of anime:

Too bad Disney is so creatively bankrupt right now that the only kind of anime that the rodent company has the will to market is anime that is based off of Disney’s most popular IP!
Part of me is still hoping that Johnny Young Bosch voices someone in Go Go Loser Ranger, a full circle moment of going between sentai and voice acting
As the lead he could make it the greatest demotion ever, from Ranger to Putty Patrol.
I'd love to see him just be the lead bc you know, Black Ranger 😊. But his evil voice is so good too so 🤔
I've been waiting for years for both the Kaiju No. 8 adaptation, and to hear Geoff talk about this great series. I was completely blown away by the first episode and I seriously hope the entire season is good enough to warrant its own video. More people need to watch/read KN8!
Dude, you did Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again DIRTY!!! Very few anime have been able to make me swing between laughing my head off and crying my eyes out AT LEAST ONCE, PER EPISODE NO LESS, like that show. Basic premise is in the title, but it is wholesome, sad, and downright hilarious. The fact that it didn't even make the bargain bin is an absolute crime. I HIGHLY recommend watching this anime on Crunchyroll!!!
Agreed! I'm loving it!

@@davidyodo24 the real question is would you give holo an apple?
I've seen some people dismiss Kaiju no 8 as just an Attack on Titan clone, so it's good to see it get recommended here. While there is definitely some influence there, AoT is nihilistic, and Kaiju is optimistic. That shift in world view really changes everything, and creates a very different experience. Plus, that story has some seriously awesome kaiju designs.
Really? I've seen it more compared as "Chainsaw Man, but with kaiju instead of demons". I've read the first 80 or so chapters, and can definitely see some ways both comparisons would be made
The ending scene with the deadpan old man sold me "uh he's reporting you"
@@SympleSymon on the surface all 3 can be described as "boy becomes monster, joins monster slaying group, they slay monsters". and there's plenty of shows that can be described like that. obviously each of these 3 has more going on, but it makes sense that people who've seen only one show of this type will make the comparison to the one they know
This is the new show that interests me the most.
They are stupid then. You only have to read a single chapter of KN8 to know its quality far surpasses its seniors. On every level KN8 is firing at maximum. From putting a regular service worker in the hero slot and actually making their experience relevant even after the power up (which is crazy considering how many series threw that potential hook in the garbage) to the gorgeous and READABLE action which hasn’t been this clear since the first pages of DBZ. I don’t even feel like continuing my illustration anymore because there isn’t any need. KN8 is already peak.

@@guenevere I'm kinda hoping he'll do an analysis/praise video of it at some point though. Would make sense as he hasn't really gotten to talk even a little bit about it yet. :)
Girls band cry is clearly my fav of the season. As a professional 3D animator myself, it warms my heart to see such a wonderful and lively animation, and I'm really lucky that the anime is available on French platform ADN ! Sublime characters, gripping story and 10/10 opening and musics. The only downside I can find for the moment is that the rendering is not always on top. I wish more people could talk about it
Yeah Toei is whiffing hard by not simulcasting it…especially if they’ve put this much effort into the show. It’s tragic that something of this quality with the potential to dispel childish stigmas against CG might end up being a total sleeper in the US. Silver lining? Maybe the entire show will get a fansub over time. The most hopeful I can get is wishing Toei airs it overseas after the season concludes
Congrats on being done with the move, and I hope you can get some rest soon. I definitely look forward to this video each new season so appreciate you getting that out.

I was so excited when you included Bartender: Glass of God. Two episodes in and I'm already fascinated and hooked. It might be more niche, but don't sleep on this one.
I started watching Bartender: Glass of God today but then I checked out Bartender (2006) to see the difference and I'm totally blown away by the old one. The vibes are absolutely impeccable for the whole 'customer comes into a mysterious bar, bartender gives them not what they wanted but what they needed' schtick. I also adore how the old one has a recipe card and a clip of a bartender making the same drink in the outro. If you're more into Bartender for the plot then you're probably gonna prefer the new one but the old one is perfect late night before bed anime

Girls Band Cry feels like it very much has the potential to be the next Place Further than the Universe considering it's written by the same guy, yet it's getting no traction Westside because of the no English release, it's tragic
Jukki Hanada simply does not miss.
Thank you for the end of video recap!
In spring 2019, I stumbled upon Konosuba and loved it. That was how I discovered anime (again for the first time). Now Konosuba's back with a long overdue new season. When I was a young padawan weeb, I used your Ones To Watch videos to help me find the anime I wanted to watch. Now, 5 years later, I have progressed to the point where I already watched every anime on your list (except the baseball one and Yatagarasu) before your video came out to discover for myself which are the Ones To Watch. I guess what I'm trying to say is thanks for all the guidance and knowledge your channel has given me along the way to becoming a well and truly full-fledged weeb.
I agree, Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night gives me A Place Further Than the Universe vibes Also Spice and Wolf for the win!
I legit had to grab a scrap of paper and a pen for all of the good suggestions this time round. Holy cow.
"15 years" is a good enough reason to do some remaking, I'm sure a lot of new anime fans haven't seen Spice and Wolf. I feel so old 💀
This was awesome! Great list and thank you for showing the list again at the end. Good luck with your move!
Two animes I didn't expect to ever continue, but both do this season: Spice and Wolf Black Butler
Go Go Loser Ranger, Wind Breaker, Mission: Yozakura Family, and maybe Mysterious Disappearances are my favorites of the season
Anime Originals are absolutely DELIVERING this Season! I've been obsessed with *Train to the End of the World* since the very first scene of the world getting all distorted! Such a charming surreal experience this show is so far and it gets crazier each episode! Same goes for *Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night* and *Girls Band Cry!* Both first episodes made me real emotional with their inspiring struggle to strife as indie artists. (I know they're not really the same show, but they give me such similar energy and vibes so it's hard to not look at them through the same lens.) Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night is incredibly beautiful to look at. Such vibrant colours and striking neon lights! Perfect in contrast to the painfully hard hitting realistic story. And Girls Band Cry might be the best 3D animated show I've ever seen, they made it look so natural it's crazy impressive! (That one scene with the middle fingers made me laugh so hard I knew I was sold for life on this show lmao)
Mega mega mega appreciate the full list at the end! Congrats on the move!
Spice and wolf was one of the first light novels I read and I am really exited to see it in anime form, having never watched the first anime.

Love the recommendations, but once again shoujo is being overlooked. A Condition Called Love might start of weird, but having read the manga, I would definitely recommend giving it a go. It is all about the development of the characters.
For sure! For any shoujo romance fans out there, A Condition Called Love is GREAT!
I skipped so many segments because the first minute made me so excited that I wanted to go in as blind as possible. And here I thought this was going to be a drought season… thanks Jeff for your excellent recommendations as always!
I was JUST searching for a new sports anime to fill a hole in my heart and now you've listed a baseball anime that will give me exactly what i need. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Tbh Wonder Egg Priority might have forever scarred my trust in original anime. Ever since I usually wait for the show to end before even giving its first episode a watch. Too deep are the scars of getting invested in a plot that trips over itself in the last few episodes and not just fails to redeem itself through the ending, but instead doubles down with a pre-finale cliffhanger ultimately dropping straight off the cliff writing-quality wise. Not to mention a delayed finale that somehow manages to scrape below the bottom of the barrel 🤕 Adaptations at least come with some chance of there potentially being at least one good arc to be had before the show is ultimately discontinued to make way for the next light novel / manga series to promote book sales for.
yeah I can't imagine Jellyfish crapping out because of its genre, but Train to the End of the World has heavy risks of going off the rails (pun fully intended). but if it crashes, at least the wreckage will be fun to spectate. I can't see it fizzling, it's going to be either great or a fiasco.
Rare that I catch a video so early I can comment before anyone has watched the whole thing. Thanks for making these videos, you never fail to showcase something that interests me each season.
I can’t tell you how happy it made me that you confirmed my opinion that Jellyfish Can’t Swim Alone at Night gives off A Place Further than the Universe vibes!! I love that anime so much 😭😭😭
Spice & Wolf is absolutely fucking fantastic. Watched the OG recently, and finished it just as the reboot launched, which was amazing timing. Holo is forever best girl, and the fact they have the original dub cast back, too (the SUPERIOR Holo voice) legit brought tears to my eyes. One of the best stories out there, man.
Tonari no Yokai-san is INSANELY slept on for such a high quality show, glad you mentioned it.
When I finished Apothecary Diaries I went immediately searching for a Mother's Basement vid on its genius, since MB is how I found out about Bookworm and similar anime. Imagine my disappointment when there was nothing 😔 That being said, I'm super hyped for a few of these recommendations, so thank you for doing the hard work of testing the waters of the season since I don't have time to not be picky about what I'm watching

Gotta admit, I am more excited for our Hottest Trash of this season. Some of the ones I have been watching will DEFINITELY make that list. Good recs here though as well, so might be adding 1 or 2 more to my already large watchlist!
I agree with most of what you said. This season is very great, whether in terms of anime with a new season or new anime. But for me personally, the anime I'm most excited about this season is still the Crossover Movie between: ' Baki Hanma vs Kengan Ashura '.
I have to take this opportunity to once again state... As Geoff mentioned, if you haven't seen it.. Watch A Place Further Than the Universe! There is a reason that a high point for Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night is, "It causes the same feelings that A Place Further Than the Universe did". But yes. I've only seen the first episode of Jellyfish, but it 100% gave me that same stupid excited smile that Yorimoi gave me. Just looking forward to the journey that the girls would go on.
A Place Further Than the Universe is basically cute girls doing cute things slice of life? Looked really well animated but boring.
Equating anything to A Place Farther Then The Universe is literally the highest possible praise you can get from this channel!

I'm so glad you mentioned A Place Further Than the Universe with Jellyfish because that was EXACTLY my thought (combined with K-On) and it's why I was IMMEDIATELY hooked.
Spice and Wolf came back with both main pairs you say? I hadn't noticed since yesterday. But to be fair, J Michael Tatum and Brina Palencia had been narrating the Light novels' audiobook forms for the last few years. At the time of writing, the audiobook version is on volume 8, with 9 to escape next month and 10 in July. and like last time, I do hope this season gets the two short stories from Side Colors 1 again, as they do actually take place during it.

The naming of sections is seriously impressive, Brotherhood and CawCaw laughed the shit out of me.
I appreciate girls band cry, yozakura family and whisper me a love song getting mentioned. So far girls band cry has been a lot better than I was expecting, yozakura is actually a pretty good adaptation especially episode 2 which improved the original chapter a lot and whisper me a love song had a perfect first episode nailing the style of the manga which isn't easy because the art from the manga is really good.
I'm SO glad windbreaker made the list; it's full hype. You had your work cut out with the bargain bin this time, though. Yozakura and Bartender def deserved their spots, and the fantasy romances grabbed me, too. I had really high hopes for Re:Monster until it showed how hard it was speedrunning wish-fulfillment power fantasy, including Stockholm syndrome by e2.
As someone who just read the entirety of kaiju no. 8 I must say it is absolutely peak and you all should read it.
You could do a top ten list for Mondays alone. First day of the week and we are dropped with an avalanche of terrific anime.
You had me at A Place Further Than the Universe - the very *SECOND* you said that, you had me sold! EDIT: *goes off and watches it* MORE! GIVE ME MORE! EDIT 2: Thank you for putting this in my life!
Watch Girls Band Cry as well. Same writer as A Place Further Than the Universe
@@RoanoraZoro123 WHERE’S CRUNCHYROLL?!
Nobody in the comments is mentioning Go Go Loser Ranger. DONT SLEEP ON THIs SERIES! The manga is absolutely peak and the anime is amazing so far
As a massive Sentai fan I didn't even know the show existed until I got sent a trailer last month by a friend, nevermind the manga. I'm now five chapters away from being up to date and holy balls it's amazing. I've got Disney+ from a family member so watching it isn't a problem, but if Disney buries this amazing story I'll be so mad.
I’ve said the same thing!! Everyone is sleeping on Go Go Loser Ranger! Most people I talk to say they won’t watch cuz it’s on Disney+. Sigh… They don’t know what they’re missing.
A Natsume Yuujinchou mention!!!!! Literally my favorite anime ever and yet not NEARLY enough people know about it. Bless you for bringing it up.
A Condition Called Love is the only anime I think you missed in this list. You did great highlighting some other hidden gems though!
God dang it you ALMOST had me with that Dragon Pow game, but the second my gacha alarm sounded it was blacklisted. To be clear, that's because I'm already eyeballs-deep in Genshin Impact
Me with hsr and genshin
yeah man I think a gacha game called dragon prisoners of war might not be a great omen 🤧
